46  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo mining... how to do? on: July 21, 2011, 08:39:30 PM
You are correct. Transaction fees get paid out to you when you find the block.

Solo mining is a good way to go, or if you're into pools then join small ones or start ones with friends. There's too many people mining in large pools these days. Too many pool operators getting paid for doing nothing but a little server maintenance -_-.

Anyone know what the average transaction fee premium is on top of the 50btc for finding a block.
Do the pools just keep this to make their profit or take a little cream off the top so to speak?
47  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Help GUIMiner Not finding Cards on: July 21, 2011, 12:37:55 PM
If you don't crossfire them you have to make / buy dummy plug.

And before install the lastest driver and the lastest version of GUIMiner

I only have one monitor and I just swap the cable from one card to another and it still makes them all light up fine so I don't think this is strictly necessary.
48  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Using linuxcoin and cant get any of the miners working on: July 21, 2011, 12:34:19 PM
The linuxcoin page states that:
Quote
AMD SDK License

You need to accept the AMD SDK license before you start mining. Just click AMD License located in system on the menu.

Have you done this? If you have, what card(s) are you running?

That's great, Just tried linuxcoin there again and it worked ok now.
Pity I went ahead and installed xp with guiminer but good to know I can use linux now as well
49  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo mining... how to do? on: July 21, 2011, 12:28:01 PM
I may be wrong here but do you not get some share of transaction fees as well by solo mining or is this just further down the line
50  Bitcoin / Mining support / Using linuxcoin and cant get any of the miners working on: July 13, 2011, 03:47:27 AM
I'm sorta new to linux but I've just had to give up after 4 hours of thinking I would get there in the end

I've been trying to run poclbm to connect to my btcguild pool account with the example commands they give and I keep getting errors (I assume that linuxcoin is sutup and ready to run however)
cd /opt/miners/poclbm
./poclbm.py -d1 --host=us.btcguild.com --port=8332 --user=myemail@gmail.com_Miner1   --pass=mypass

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "./poclbm.py", line 31, in <module>
    platforms = cl.get_platforms()
pyopencl.LogicError: clGetPlatformIDs failed: platform not found khr
user@linuxcoin:/opt/miners/poclbm$

It's driven me so crazy at this point that I have to ask for help

52  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone else get busted by the cops for "suspicious" energy consumption! on: June 28, 2011, 09:35:23 PM
The DEA has no jurisdiction inside Canada, which Vancouver is a part of.

Sigh...http://thetyee.ca/News/2004/10/27/WhyUSDrugCopVan/

That's the first result on google bty. An I while I said DEA I'm not sure who the equivalent in Canada is as I'm in Portland WA
Look If I have to spend this thread trying to prove I'm not BS'ing you guys then I'm sorry I bothered to give you some sort of warning that this could happen.

I'm sorry I even bothered as this now seems more like a witch hunt than people thinking this could ever happen to them as well.

If you want to consider this as a possibility and talk about it then do otherwise don't bother as I'm finished defending myself.

53  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone else get busted by the cops for "suspicious" energy consumption! on: June 28, 2011, 01:37:26 PM
this is the only forum i've ever been on where i see story after story of crazy things that happened to who?...... your friend of course...... transparency at it's best

Fair enough I guess but I not everyone talks and I'm sure there are many lurkers on these forums
Tell you what he has some images of the mess they made and his broken door that he took to send them when he gets bills for repairs and such.
If he doesn't mind I'll send him a mail and post one or two as they knocked over two of his rigs which were on a shelf looking to see if there was anything stashed behind them
54  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone else get busted by the cops for "suspicious" energy consumption! on: June 28, 2011, 01:23:55 PM
Kinda suspicious. I'm not saying it's fake, I don't know. But this story has the telltale signs of an urban legend.

Happened to an anonomyus "friend" in an unknown location.
It was the DEA, not the local cops. As though the DEA has time to check out possible grow-up houses.

As mentioned, search warrants are public records. Let's see it.

As I said this was in Vancouver, Check it out if you like.

I'm not coming here looking for some sort of notoriety or to say "FUCK SHIT I just had the cops come into my kick my kids and fuck my dog!!"
I'm just trying to give a warning to some people that this could happen to them too and maybe it's best not to have any actual drugs there.

it's not story/rocket science..It's common sense that these things happen is all
Call me a liar in every post from now on if you like, I'm just trying to have a discussion on the topic as I like to smoke a little myself and now I'm thinking twice because of my 2 rigs in the same small apartment room...simples??
55  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone else get busted by the cops for "suspicious" energy consumption! on: June 28, 2011, 01:15:39 PM
Probable urban legend. It always happens to an unidentified buddy, never to the poster.
Actually I'm just posting as he's not exactly a talker on here and only signed up recently to get out of the newbie section in case he does need to make a post.
I'll find out his name if you like

Also trust me at the moment he's not in the mood to come on here and talk about this right now.
Was just on the phone to him about it and well if I was woke from my slumber with a gun in my face I'd be a little shook up too

I'm sorry but I call BS...  It's easy enough to prove us wrong...  post the town and state he lives in...  or if it's rural, the county and state...  That search warrant is public record, so it will be easy enough for one of us to call and confirm there was a DEA raid there.

Vancouver BC, Not sure what the DEA is officially called there but find out if you like. Be interesting to find out how they cover themselves in these sort of cock up's
56  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone else get busted by the cops for "suspicious" energy consumption! on: June 28, 2011, 01:02:38 PM
The only thing that made both of us chuckle was the quote that the dea guys came out with about all the computers and fans in the room.
"are you like the google or something"  Grin
To which my friend said and maybe not so smartly "something like that"
I guess he just wanted them out and didn't want to start explaining bitcoin to a bunch of thugs.

Anyway maybe they got the impression he was up to something illegal all the same with so much equipment lying around as according to him his house is a mess now

58  Economy / Goods / Re: Selling off my mining rigs on: June 28, 2011, 12:38:50 PM
I think the OP hasn't thought this through.  He's selling his mining gear because it's not worth mining any more, on a Bitcoin mining forum  Wink

Speaking of getting rid of hardware, I too am downsizing, although listing elsewhere to sell my graphics cards and other bits.  Employing $1000 of hardware to eek out maybe $5 a day after power and tax doesn't strike me as especially effective.

This is partly a problem of mom and pop basement operations that neither are tax regiestered (paying sales tax / VAT) nor get industrial power.

Just comparing my own plans to a home guy 20km further down the road:

* I look for a room with water access for ingoing chillers (cooling air into the room, air out will be dumped to the environment) Wink Happens I live on a harbor city.
* I will pay about 25% to 20% of the power costs he pays Wink

Makes a difference between happy investment, possibly, and - well... loosing money.

People like Vladimir with his data centers will make money when small basement operations realize they pay a hefty price every month.

You should ask google for some space in their new data centre  Grin

Google has released a video showing off an interesting environmentally friendly innovation in one of their newly built data centers -- namely, a seawater cooling system for its servers. Located on the southern coast of Finland, the data center takes advantage of massive quarter-mile long tunnels installed by a paper mill previously operating on the site. The latter cooled some of its paper making machinery using the tunnels -- and apparently other industries have been known to do this as well -- but up until now using seawater for data center cooling was unheard of.

Wow!

Just got a message form the buddy of mine who got me into bitcoin saying last night he woke up to his front door being busted in by DEA and cops with a warrant to search his house on suspicion of it being a massive pot-growing operation Shocked Shocked

Apparently the first thing that triggered their suspicion was the sharp increase in electricity consumption, they then did a fly over thermal scan which picked up a higher than normal heat signature coming from his utility room.
Last time I asked he was only running 5 rigs with 3 5870's/5850's in each

Worst thing is my friend is such a quiet guy ans seems positively shocked still by all this, Even though it must have been obvious to the cops that the heat was from his rigs they still decided to search the entire place just in case they might find something for their trouble.
I'd say he was freaking out too as he looks like and is the sort of guy to smoke a little now and again so having 10 cops search every corner of your house might turn up something he didn't even know of.

Anyway I guess this is just a heads up, if your mining don't have pot or any other drugs in your house just in case.
Worst thing is he had to spend the whole night awake waiting for someone to come fix his door after the pigs fecked off and left his house in a state Roll Eyes

tl;dr:  If you mine don't keep drugs in your house
