I've been mining for about a month with a 6770 using LinuxCoin and it's worked very well. I just bought a second 6770 and installed it, but when I started back up, the second GPU wasn't recognized. Is there something I need to do in LinuxCoin to get the second GPU to show up?

Please forgive my noobness, but I just signed up with the pool and am having trouble connecting. I'm running Phoenix via LinuxCoin, and it says "Failed to connect, retrying..." I assume it has something to do with using port 3000 because I've been able to connect to other pools via ports 8332 and 8337, but I could be totally wrong on that.

Anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? The command I'm entering is (with personal info redacted):

./phoenix.py -u http://[worker name]:[password]@mineco.in:3000 -k phatk DEVICE=0 BFI_INT WORKSIZE=128 AGGRESSION=9

Any help in getting this working would be greatly appreciated! TIA

I'm an amateur stock/option trader, and I check Yahoo Finance every morning. There was a story on Bitcoin in the top headlines section, must have been in early June because it was right before the bubble.

That story really struck me, and I spent the next week reading all about it. Because I wasn't ready to jump all the way in, I missed the bubble run up to $30/BTC and subsequent crash. My cost basis is currently between $14 and $15/BTC.

I've become a little obsessed with mining, but really it's just an excuse for me to learn about building computers and how to use Linux.

What seems obvious now to me is that the mining and trading communities for Bitcoin have seen a lot of development and maturing. Now it's time for the Bitcoin economy and commerce community to really start developing. Hard to see Bitcoin being successful without that. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I'm doing something very similar. I have LinuxCoin 0.2.1b plus about 3GB of persistence storage on a PNY 4GB flash drive, and have had absolutely zero problems with it.

That being said, before I found that setup, I was trying to configure Ubuntu 11.04 for mining on a Dane-Elec 4GB flash drive and had all kinds of stability problems. So I would suggest using a quality flash drive, not some cheapo that won't work properly.

For both LinuxCoin and Ubuntu, I used Unetbootin to "burn" the Linux image to USB and to set up persistence. And I was a total Linux noob a few weeks ago before I finally got my first mining rig set up. LinuxCoin has been great.

Hey, I'm a bitcoin user in Seattle, as well. Just got my first mining rig set up and running (after a week of frustration  ). I'd be interested in some kind of meetup, but the one referenced above wouldn't work for me. Would have to be outside of normal working hours. Cheers!

Interesting. I probably do have a cheapie USB stick (can't remember how much I paid for it). And I've definitely noticed the slow boot times because I have had to reboot a lot, which is where all of these problems came in. I'm going to wait a few days for the hard drive to arrive and give it another shot. Thanks for the tips 

Has anybody else had problems running Ubuntu 11.04 from a USB stick? I'm fairly new to Linux, but I figured I'd familiarize myself with it, learn more about building computers, and mine some bitcoins by setting up a cheap mining rig. I was trying to avoid buying an HDD by using Linux from a USB stick instead, but I've had all kinds of problems trying to get the rig set up software-wise.

I've tried both the 32bit and 64bit desktop versions (on an AMD Athon II X2). And I've used persistence, installed via Unetbootin. It just hasn't been stable at all. Many times, it has started in desktop mode, and then when I reboot, it goes into netbook mode on its own. A few times, the desktop has failed to load at startup and it went straight to the command line. One time, after reboot, the desktop image and color scheme had completely changed to a neon green all on its own. Another time, it starting telling me there was zero disk space when there should have been over 2GB available. And this last time, it started giving me a bus error and input/output errors.

I finally gave up and ordered a hard drive from Newegg. Has anyone else had problems like this running Linux from USB, or do I just fail at Linux?  And any tips on what I'm doing wrong would be appreciated.

I made the same mistake of buying an Nvidia card when I first started experimenting with a rig (which was like two weeks ago). I just bought a 6770 and will be installing it soon.

I'm currently trying to set up my first mining rig, and I have all the hardware set up. I'm running LinuxCoin from a USB stick, but I can't figure out how to actually mine. I tried running both phoenix and poclbm from the start_mining command, but couldn't get it to work.

For example, with phoenix, I would enter the device number (tried 0 and 1, not sure which is correct), the URL (pit.deeptbit.net), username (XXXXXXXX@XXXXX.XXX_XXXX as email_workerlabel), and password. For flags, I entered VECTORS BFI_INT WORKSIZE=128 AGGRESSION=11 and that seemed to work. But then it asked for a kernel number, and I didn't know what to do. I tried just hitting Enter, but that didn't seem to work.

I also tried to load SmartCoin, but couldn't get that to work either.

Basically, I'm pretty much a Linux newb, and I haven't been able to find any instructions clear enough that I could get any of these miners to work. Anyone have any pointers? Also, I'm using an Nvidia card if that helps. Thanks!

I really hope OP is not serious. If so, welcome to the art of speculation. You can get taken to the cleaners if you don't know what you're doing. CAVEAT EMPTOR
