Technically you are not the owner of coins which are kept in exchanges because the addtess doesn't belong to you. So, it's never safe to put your coin on exchange. Also, sometimes exchange may get hacked too.

You didn't mention any criteria, I mean in terms of investment or usages? I would definitely choose Monero in term of usages while BTC and XRP is my choice as an investment. BTC because less risky than other coins, XRP because of its centralization which will push the price for a while.

The market is being manipulated every day only without the BTC which is a little bit more difficult although miners can manipulate  Altcoins are usually manipulated by the whale. That's why it's risky to invest in altcoin.

It will be profitable only if you can find a good one. Most of the ICOs are scam, for your info. You need to have a huge study on each project before investing your money. Only then you will be able to make a profit. Otherwise, you have to end up losing all.

To be honedt, XRP is the only pump and dump coin in top 10, lol. It is a centralized cryptocurrency while the purpose behind cryptocurrency was decentralization. However, I think XRP will be profited for next 2-3 years. Later it will not be even existed because of centralization.

If you are thinking of investing in altcoin, don't go without the top 10. I think investing in other is really risky. Those may end up in very short period of time. In can invest in lower market cap, if it has real usage/adoption only.
