..for me, that's just another brainwallet :-)
You take some human-compatible input and create a 254bit string from it. Most will use a simple sha256() for this, but a somewhat advanced harvesting-bot would also try several sha256(), reversing the string, doubling the dtring and hashing again, etc.
Regular brute-force alteration.

The lesson should be: "you only have as many bits in your final result as the complexity of the input and the algorithm". Just because the final string is 256bit long, doesn't mean much.

502  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: July 13, 2014, 08:06:33 PM
Where would Armory expect to find the blockchain files on OS X (and by "where" I mean the path where I would mount that directory via /etc/fstab)?

Situation is I want to run bitcoind on a separate linux machine and share the appropriate directory via NFS.

Figuring out how to mount NFS shares in OS X is the easy part, but I don't know where OS X puts things in its directory structure.

I don't know what exactly you plan, but I know that Armory talks to bitcoind directly as well. It doesn't just use its blockchain files, but does all network-related things via bitcoind. So I am somewhat sure you can't run Armory on a machine with no local bitcoind.
Sorry if I understood your plan wrong. And maybe there's a way to connect to bitcoind non-locally as well, at least I remember it used to not be possible earlier.

Ente

Theoretically this should work, as Armory uses the bitcoin rpc calls for the part of the communication that is not related to the blockchain-files. The bitcoind by default does not accept external rpc connections, but can be configured this way: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin#Bitcoin.conf_Configuration_File. However, I don't know if there is a setting in Armory, that lets you point the rpc calls to another host. So either it would be necessary to setup a local port redirection (with SSH for example) or to change Armory's source.

Nevertheless, I would like to know about your (or from others) experiences with this setup.

I am very much interested in this as well.
I would like to move bitcoind to a (local) server, running 24/7. My plan was to have a second, local bitcoind on my client pc, which syncs with the server from time to time. But Armory directly using the server' bitcoind via nfs and network would be much nicer!

503  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Bitmessage - P2P Messaging system based partially on Bitcoin on: July 13, 2014, 07:34:31 PM
Awesome!
I felt the next step for Bitmessage would be a broader userbase, via "popular chat client addon". I didn't think much about mobile integration, as it seemed too impossible to me.

Two thoughts on this:

- did you check out bitcoinj? That's what "Bitcoin Wallet" on Android is using, and it has an efficient "lite" modus.

- whatever the way to go, I would really prefer that all BM messages are all the same. As soon as some of them have a tag and some not, plausible deniability is gone, more information is added via that distinction, people need a different backchannel to say "hey, please tag messages sent to me", which again leaks info, and finally there will be many people not receiving messages because of this and dropping it all together in frustration.

Sorry for that long sentence.
Please make all BM messages the same :-)

You are doing wonderful work, this will be a big step forward!

let multiple escrow handlers plug into the system and get ratings.  that way is more decentralized anyway.

That's the proper way to do this, yes!

Yes it is my addresses. Just for rating/advertising system Smiley . For place your offer you can pay 0.0001btc+bitcoin fee. If you pay more your goods upper, and categories sorting depend on sum of paymens all items in this category. Payment actual 10 days. It is symple spam protection. Most decentralized spam protection, without moderators.

I see no problem with that.
I would suggest you to be transparent about this, so noone shouts "hidden scam!!1!" there.

I am very happy to see so many constructive, smart ideas being thrown around here!

There's a weird bug happening right now (browser independent):
"close"/"claim" displaced

My tradable balance also shows an insane negative amount right now.
Devs, clear this up!!!

If you change stuff on your platform why don't you test it out first..

Edit: That weird displacement is gone now. My balance is still negative. If someone had to use his "tradable balance" right now, this could potentially cost real money!

Edit2: Just saw the announcement.. I don't quite get why that would change my tradable balance at all, but if it has something to do with it it would have been great to know beforehand

My position is all in the red as well!!!1!

Oh, wait, that's not a bug.. oops

Still not a single answer from BFX to all of this? What is that? Is there some long-ass holiday on the British Virgin Island or is there more to their secretivity. Ignoring this won't make it go away.

why should they outline their strategy for these worst case scenarios in a public forum?

Well, because the trust of us users in the worst-case-scenario strategy of a platform is a big factor in evaluating the risk of the platform. Which directly dictates how much funds to have stored there.

edit:
This doesn't mean they have to publish passwords and secret backup locations.
A strategy shouldn't rely on being secret, ever.

Dude you forgot to register the .com name. I've grabbed it and redirected it to this topic.
Thx, my main address now it is bitxbay .ws  and I have bitxbay.bit but did not have time for website yet. In a hurry to make a really light version, now the priority use of electrum as alternatives bitcoin-qt.
Just tell me where to transfer it to. My gift to you. Do you have a Namecheap?

Enjoy your +1 reputation, sir! :-)

Why don't the two peers (Buyer & Merchant) communicate what TXIDs they're going to use to spend, then, one party (Either one) can create a transaction using the two TXIDs and destinating in the 2-2 address, sign it, then send it to the other party. This way the other party can only cash in the other person's money if they also agree to cash in their money as well, otherwise, the transaction is invalid as it's missing signatures.

Seems like such a simple feature of Bitcoin you completely skipped over making this wholle project infinitely worse, as, I think we can all agree, we want a trustless system, currently, this system is highly trustful.

Case in point:- I just lost ~ $0.07 because the seller disappeared (Or went offline) after I had sent the 5% to the initial address, if you used my above system, I'd have either of never sent it, or, the seller would have also have just lost 5%.

EDIT:- And can you explain something else for me? Imagine this:-

1. Seller puts up sale for product
2. Buyer purchases, sends 5% to address, so does the seller, then buyer deposits 100%.
3. Seller refuses to give buyer anything

What happens now? Is there anything the buyer can do? The only way I can see the buyer of getting *any* of his money back is to authorize the transaction to receive 5% of his money back, otherwise, he's out 105%, rather than 100%. This could easily be used to extort people, especially if dealing with large amounts (Say I was buying something for $1,000, I'd rather have lost $1,000 than $1,050).

That's a good idea, even better than the original proposal.

This project is very, very interesting!
I like the simple, yet sane approach of "5% insurance". The simple solutions often are the best!
I am somewhat vary of playing with it on my main hardware, but hope to eventually give it a try.
You being anonymous doesn't help with trust. But then, 'veteran' accounts were hacked or sold before, so this would be a false feeling of security anyway.

Thank you for what you do, bitXbay!

Wow, thats great... I never thought such a high amount would be donated already...

So is there a list of NPOs that might get a donation in the future so that i can see if the NPO i suggested matches the criteria?

Those are frequently posted here, mostly by Rassah.
Commenting on those is highly appreciated. BTC100 needs manpower the most, now.

519  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Sonny Vleisides (Butterfly Labs CEO) 2014 Court Transcript [The TL/DR version] on: July 08, 2014, 07:33:02 PM
Original Transcript: http://www.scribd.com/doc/217190031/2014-01-28-USA-v-Vleisides-Transcript

I'm a BFL customer. I read this entire court transcript (it took me 3 hours) and I copied the important parts below to save you some time. Best parts highlighted in blue.

I think it's funny how the Judge says that BFL has a smell and "smells really bad" and "It's a strong smell".

[..]

The TL/DR of the TL/DR is: Don't do business with BFL because their company and owners are loaded with corruption and shady business practices at the customers' losses.

Thank you a lot for the work you did!
I wouldn't have read through the original file, but this tl;dr is very much worth it.
Personally, I would have been too ashamed to even give those answers.

Could be someone having only 1 day left on their position and cycling through loans.

Well, no, then the loan would have its regular, full length displayed, and would have been closed and returned  at some point.
