1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dwolla E-mails on: July 18, 2011, 07:38:24 PM
I received this email too. I've only ever used Dwolla for Mt. Gox and exchangebitcoins.com.
2  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitoption.org -- ESCROWED LIVE Bitcoin Options Trading on: June 20, 2011, 06:23:58 AM
I've been following this thread for a while. Nice work @bitoption on launching a functional options trading site! Question: why not accept DWOLLA for USD transfers instead of the MtGox->USD send process? Cheers.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINK FOR LEAKED MT. GOX ACCOUNT DATABASE (CSV FILE) on: June 20, 2011, 12:31:22 AM
My Gmail account reported suspicious activity and I had to reset my password there. I'm using http://howsecureismypassword.net/ to determine the strength. >600yrs to crack on a normal PC it says. So maybe 60 yrs on a mining rig, good enough for now!
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ideas for the Perfect Bitcoin Exchange on: June 18, 2011, 08:03:12 PM
Our biggest legal problems will arise if it's treated like a currency, but if it's not, then we may be able to do this with complete anonymity. We're looking into that today as I type this.

Even without treating BTC like a currency, the U.S. could consider BTC exchanges like prediction markets, already illegal here. You should check with your legal counsel about that.

6  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin could easily survive SHA-256 being broken on: June 17, 2011, 07:32:33 AM
A break of SHA 256 would only be bad if it was kept secret, in which case it would be like someone having bought a shitload of video cards to mine with. Otherwise it would only cause a difficulty spike like the move from CPU to GPU hashing did.

7  Economy / Trading Discussion / BTC options site on: June 17, 2011, 05:48:36 AM
I'm developing an options site which only accepts BTC. I'm aware of the issues already outlined with a BTC-only futures market (http://www.bitcoinfrenzy.com/2011/05/problems-with-proposed-bitcoin-futures.html) but think I have a solution - the options pricing model just needs to be adjusted properly. Although my site won't take USD, it will occasionally need to arrange a p2p USD transaction (in the case of exercising an option). What is the best service to use for p2p cash transactions? PayPal still? Dwolla widespread enough?

Cheers

8  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / bitcoin could easily survive SHA-256 being broken on: June 17, 2011, 04:52:48 AM
I think that is one of bitcoin's best features. the difficulty is > 800k so the hardware infrastructure is solidly in place. all that is required is an online vote with > 50% agreeing to the new client. would result in 2 (or more) alternative currencies, but no worries, the new miners and conversion exchanges would be up in days with personal API bots doing most of the trading/converting. it would all be over before any widespread exploit of SHA-256 could disrupt it significantly.
9  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Maybe it's time for some real entrepreneurs to raise some venture capital on: June 17, 2011, 04:04:52 AM
I mean start a business providing infrastructure services, a far more sophisticated services than what we already have. For example, Clearcoin.com is one of the most important services I think the bitcoin economy needs. However, it's still a one-man start-up, running on some app. engine, and down from now and then…… Hi, dude, it's business about money, wealth of the people, don't you think you're not serious enough? why not just raise some venture capital, and hire more people and persuade more smart programmers, product managers, marketing experts into the great adventure.

I agree with this sentiment completely. bitcoin needs more entrepreneurs. I also think there are several great one-man start-ups out there like ClearCoin still to be launched. To start a larger venture, the traditional VC approach is a bit top-down. bitcoin is more amenable to p2p micro-finance solutions of the prosper/zopa/kiva variety. Lot's could be done through that type of channel to scale up the economy right now.

I created a small necklace for my USB drive. They'll have to rip it from my cold, dead hands....
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Why store Bitcoins remotely? on: June 12, 2011, 07:40:03 PM
Very happy to see so many people trying to create new services out there. This is what will establish the Bitcoin economy. I was wondering about Instawallet type services. What benefit is there to storing Bitcoins on someone else's server that could potentially be hacked. The benefit of accessing your wallet from anywhere seems negated by the fact that the security is based on a unique URL which would be potentially saved in any computer you use.

Exerting central control over a forum promoting a decentralized currency. Human psychology is endlessly fascinating.

Dear admins, I'll pay you 0.001 BTC if you whitelist me.

Ok ok... 0.002 but no more. Address?

argh. I still can't post in the non-n00b forums. Dammit I've got a site to build. Ok ok I'll pay you 0.004. Look, I can keep this binary exponential bribe equation running for as long as it takes.

Do I hear 0.008?

Alright, let's skip past 0.016 and 0.032. I offer you 0.05 BTC - FINAL OFFER - so I can continue my options trading project and be allowed to communicate with like-minded individuals to bootstrap this economy.

Perhaps the best way to deal with this situation is to grandfather in all existing users by whitelisting everyone, and then only applying the newbie rule to new accounts.

AYE!

I understand the reaction to the trolls, but adding the restrictions was an over-reaction. Think about it, the trolls actually help Bitcoin, wasting their time propagating the meme. The dark news about Silk Road was the best thing to happen - any Bitcoin meme propagation is good for the system. This is a bottom-up phenomenon, let it go - this troll bullshit will go away soon anyway. I am building an options site - is anyone interested in helping out?

Can you please whitelist me? I don't have many good posts because I just joined - bad timing with the troll problem, but I am obsessed with BitCoin and have a lot of thoughts about it. I'm trying to build an options trading system and want to stay in touch with the community.
