901  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: February 14, 2012, 05:34:13 AM
I'm having essentially the same issue as enigma; my miners keep disconnecting and reconnecting, and effective mining time ends up being drastically reduced.

BinaryMage:

Means that they have found something interesting for gpugrid AND they used it to make the side project donate@home

aka: they discovered bitcoin and said "wow, what if we make a side project and ask ppl to mine there to help fund us?"

Posters have no idea cause like no one of them, normal partecipants, know what bitcoin is. GDF is the project administrators and he know what it is of course.

How can this be fishy? GDF is the administrator of GPUGRID, and opened a thread on the GPUGRID forum.

As for how it work, the screenshot of slaveindebt clearly show how the application specify "internet connection required"

I still think this: you say that WU doesn't connect, but why not? WU just start a .exe application that crunch them. What the .exe do is not related to boinc or the wu. If the application happens to be a miner with the info to mine for a pool, it will just mine. Once wu reach 100% boinc shut it down and send it back for credits

Fair point. I didn't look that screenshot over carefully enough; my own research on their website didn't pull up anything indicating that a constant net connection was required, but if it is, I can see how this would work. I stand corrected, thanks for illuminating me. Grin

I don't think it will have large adoption, though. I crunched for BOINC before I discovered Bitcoin, and the general attitude is quite anti-Bitcoin. Some believe it a scam, many don't know much about it - but most importantly, a vast majority consider it "unethical" compared to computing for science, which they do. On the GPUGRID thread, many responders were criticizing GPUGRID for associating with Bitcoin. I think likely that the majority of crunchers would rather just donate directly than run this project.

903  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Donate@Home, Bitcoin and shared computing merge on: February 13, 2012, 03:01:51 PM
Do you think BOINC will accept my application for donatetocacoins.org?
It's for a good cause, I think.
BOINC accept nothing. It's just a software. If you set up a project and give us a link and a site to create accounts, tadah, you can do it.

A different thing is of course to have your project listed on the official BOINC website. But there are a lot of projects not listed there that are happily crunched by  alot of ppl

And about the "scam" and wu and stale, wake up  Cheesy
You just put a miner in the WU, BOINC receive the WU and start it, it don't know WHAT the wu do. The miner start and guess what? Automatically connect to a pool (their pool i suppose) and mine. When WU reach 100% (maybe at X shares) WU is "completed" and you receive BOINC credits.

@littleshop: http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=2839
This thread is opened in the GPUGRID website by the:
Volunteer moderator
Project administrator
Project developer
Project scientist

And link to donate@home

So yes donate@home is related to GPUGRID.

Can it be a scam? Well, there is a chance they use your GPU for something else but... GPUGRID is a nvidia only project cause they had fail results with ati client. Now they have a project where ATI runs and runs much better than nvidia. What if not bitcoin mining can it be?

Sure, weird thing is that they don't have a donation address anywhere... you make ppl mine bitcoins but don't even place a simple address?

Strangely enough, I actually do know what I'm talking about. BOINC workunits do not connect to the internet during execution, a different client would be required for that. Workunits are certain collections of number crunching that are downloaded, processed - often without a constant internet connection - and re-uploaded when some number are complete.

The thread you linked to seems legitimate, but none of the posters seem to have a clear idea of exactly what bitcoin mining is. (and one thinks Bitcoins are used mainly for online gambling) The OP seems like he didn't actually create the website, he just discovered it. Still smells very, very fishy to me.
904  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Kepler hashing performance (Numbers) on: February 13, 2012, 03:16:14 AM
Definitely a possibility. Still not in the MH/$ range of 5870s or 5970s, but once the Kepler cards come down in price somewhat, they could become popular.

I think we may be on the verge of the GPU compute wars. Quite exciting, in a way, and disturbing, in another...
905  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Donate@Home, Bitcoin and shared computing merge on: February 13, 2012, 03:06:44 AM
That page looks scammy - if you want to give away to a 100% fee pool, that looks like it.

I tend to agree. Who knows if the work done is even for Bitcoins? With the BOINC workunit system, WUs are often not submitted for hours or even days after they're dispensed. Unless I'm missing something, that would seem to make mining impossible due to all of the shares being stale by the time they were submitted.
906  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Is it worth it? -- mining with a Radeon 4550 on: February 13, 2012, 02:30:01 AM
not cost effective, however it is educational.  I say try it for the experience. and then Invest in proper equipment if you like it.

If education is what you seek, set your CPU to mine, it will probably make more anyway and not hurt your power bill as much.
907  Economy / Services / Re: Cheap VPS Hosting - From 0.2 BTC to 1.1 BTC on: February 12, 2012, 10:56:55 PM
I'm liking "VPS Squared - Virtual, Powerful, Supported VPSs" a lot.  I might change the thread to that name soon  Roll Eyes

Glad I could be of service. It was the least I could do for all the assistance you provided.
908  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Is it possible? on: February 12, 2012, 10:04:44 PM
Is it possible when Proportion mining to find the block on the first share and get all 50 BTC minus fees?

Possible, yes. Astronomically unlikely, also yes.
909  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT - Easy persistent USB key based linux for dedicated miners/mining farms on: February 12, 2012, 09:12:01 PM
As a way of expressing my gratitude for lodcrappo's excellent software and contributing in a way that did not require me to spend what little Bitcoins I have, I set up an anonymous FTP mirror of BAMT on an unmetered server. It can be accessed at ftp://50.53.21.166:3141/bamt/bamt_v0.4b.zip. I will add 0.5 when it is released to the public, and I'd be glad to keep the older versions on there in case anyone needs them.
910  Economy / Services / Re: Cheap VPS Hosting - From 0.2 BTC to 1.1 BTC on: February 12, 2012, 08:50:37 PM
Nice pun....So used to my name, kinda forgot about puns with it.

I'd like to push the Price mainly, and Customer Service, but for names, I've thought of this as the first thing in my head type thought:
Null-Pocket-Burning VPS
(just now) NPB VPS ?

That's really all I got xD

I'm not sure what I think about NPB VPS. It's inventive and memorable, but it wouldn't communicate much to a potential customer.

Acronyms generally work well. Two I though of off the top of my head:
VPS Squared - Virtual, Powerful, Supported VPSs
GASP VPS - Generally Awesome Support Provided VPSs
911  Economy / Services / Re: Cheap VPS Hosting - From 0.2 BTC to 1.1 BTC on: February 12, 2012, 07:31:43 PM
Well, you could make a pun with your forum game... eg "VPS's at Prices you will GASP at!", though that's pretty cheesy.  Tongue

More seriously, the first question you need to ask yourself is what you want the name to symbolize, and that has more to do with your target market than anything. What key feature of your service do you want to push? Price? Unmetered bandwidth? Customer service? You want your name or motto to reflect to at least some degree that feature.
912  Economy / Services / Re: Cheap VPS Hosting - From 0.2 BTC to 1.1 BTC on: February 12, 2012, 06:03:45 PM
My review of Mr. Gasp's Cheap VPS Hosting:

Customer Service:
First of all, I must note the absolutely phenomenal customer service provided by Mr. Gasp. For a VPS I paid ~.15 BTC for, he set it up quickly and correctly, answered my queries within ~15 minutes generally, and reinstalled a different OS (for free) when I was for some odd and still undetermined reason unable to SSH in. He was professional, courteous, and helpful throughout the entire process.

Hardware Info (all for "That One" VPS):
HDD:

CPU:

(x3, 3 cores)
Network:

Customer service is excellent, specs are unmatched for the price, network is moderately fast and unmetered. I would definitely recommend this VPS.
913  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: February 11, 2012, 03:37:14 AM
I am getting paid by my pool. I was just saying that I'm not getting any public work.

Check your set PPS price. Set it to .00005, you should start getting some.

EDIT: I have received some complaints about listing the PPS price. Seriously, people, enough is enough. This is a public (albeit beta) pool, and attempting to keep that information secret is simply selfish. Unless pirateat40 specifically requests as such, I am not going to delete my post.
914  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT - Easy persistent USB key based linux for dedicated miners/mining farms on: February 11, 2012, 03:36:28 AM
Any ideas how to bypass amdoverdrivectrl limits on clocks and voltage? Is it a driver or card BIOS limit?
On windows I could use barelyclocked to bypass clock limits on all of my cards and trixx for voltage limits on some of them (didn't work straight away but after some trying).

Linux is limited to AMD's limits. Unless you flash the BIOS atitweak/aticonfig limits are what you get.

I can push my 5870s beyond standard Overdrive limits without an issue on BAMT, but 6xxx's may not.
915  Economy / Services / Re: Shades Minoco - A different type of mining company on: February 09, 2012, 05:34:34 AM

2 Linksys Catylist rack switches
1 dlink 16port rackable switch
3 4u server rack cases
1 4u web host server.
Tons of cat 5 and other odds and ends.

Server specs and asking price?
916  Economy / Services / Re: Will do anything for BTC. Make an offer. on: February 09, 2012, 05:31:52 AM
Convince Mitt Romney to endorse Bitcoin; I'll send you 5.
917  Economy / Services / Re: Cheap VPS Hosting - From 0.2 BTC to 1.1 BTC on: February 09, 2012, 05:30:03 AM
I have all three cores now?  Shocked proc/cpuinfo shows me three amd cores at 3.86 GHz, and minerd gives me three threads at a full >4 khash each. What's going on? Huh

I believe 1 core is your allocation under full load; cores are split based on who is using them, so when no else is using them, you will receive all three. And, unless you're mining Litecoins, 4 Khash is way too slow, do you mean 4 Mhash?
918  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Big fluctuations in total network hashing power on: February 09, 2012, 12:52:05 AM

The correct answer seems to have been missed.

There is no way to know the hashrate of the network.  We can only estimate it by looking at block completion time.

IF global network hashing rate was 9,000,000,000,000 hashes/s exactly and never varied the graph would still show variance because it is indirectly estimated hashing power based on block completion time.

ABCPool was DDOS'd a few days ago, that probably had a small effect. Mostly it's just fluctuation though - network hashrate estimates are based on the number of blocks found in a certain time period, which varies based on luck. (or pseudo-luck)

It wasn't missed.  Wink

But thanks for the good intentions anyways.
919  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: VirtualMiner.eu - Game temporarily Down on: February 08, 2012, 04:15:43 PM
ummmm... password recovery is maybe still not ok.. i changed a lot of stuff when the server was offline.. but if youre fine with it i can delete your old account.

And thanks for the donation :0)

That would be nice; username should be the same as my forum one. Thanks!
920  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: VirtualMiner.eu - Game temporarily Down on: February 08, 2012, 03:51:19 PM
Sure. Just give me the transaction ID and i will check it. Sorry fort hat though. I hoped noone did deposit any BTCs between Serverdown and the last backup.. but if its just you i am sure we can discuss this...

*edit* I just checked my balances.. yes... they are a bit too high at the moment.. so i guess i have had an incoming transaction that wasnt logged in the database.. checking my side now.

Well, it's strange, because I can seemingly reset the password (it sends me an email & I reset with no apparent issues), but when I try to login, it just takes me back to the main page with no change.

Since you're not being a jerk about it, consider the BTC I put in a donation, it's not worth the hassle for 0.1 BTC. Smiley

I guess I'll just create a new account, unless you have any other suggestions.
