1  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do I need a Coinbase Wallet, as well as the Coinbase account? on: December 02, 2021, 12:21:21 AM
Right, Hoss, cannot use Electrum, because I need ETH.
OK, I'll Trust that...  wherever I get a wallet from, They won't save the seed-phrase.
My paranoia is probably overkill.

Do not yet want to spend $ for the Hardware wallet.
Hopefully, I'll soon get Big$, and Then I'll get one of those.

I just read about the open-source Exodus wallet.
ONLY on a desktop (not mobile), but Desktop is what I want anyway.
Any reason to Not go with Exodus?
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do I need a Coinbase Wallet, as well as the Coinbase account? on: December 01, 2021, 11:19:12 PM
Crap.  I looked at Electrum, and it deals only with BTC.
I need ETH, 'cause I plan to sell NFTs on Opensea, earning ETH.
Crap.

Regardless, this is quite Interesting and Educational.  I'm in.
Re: Electrum, I'd download the Installer to my Online machine, copy it to my Offline machine, then run it offline.
That Installer includes the 2048 words to choose from.

May I instead create my own seed-phrase, like
ThisIsMySecretPhraseThatNobodyButMeKnowsBecauseIMadeItUpAllByMyself
Are there Any ETH wallets that would allow me to do that?
3  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do I need a Coinbase Wallet, as well as the Coinbase account? on: December 01, 2021, 09:21:38 PM
NeuroticFish, thanks for that link.
That explains the process almost as clearly as You just did, but still...
When ORIGINATING / CREATING a non-custodial wallet (for the intended Offline machine),
that machine MUST go momentarily online for that creation process.  Correct?
Or am I still missing something?

Aahhh...  I just read the reply from Jerome...
With Electrum, I can create my own 12-word-seed-phrase (or any other text?).
Now, THERE's the answer for paranoids like me.
Nobody except ME will initially see that source seed-phrase.

Am I clear, now?    Roll Eyes
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do I need a Coinbase Wallet, as well as the Coinbase account? on: December 01, 2021, 08:42:15 PM
Apologies if I'm beating this subject to death, but...  many years ago,
I was programming Assembler language on IBM mainframes...  I'm detail-oriented.

I've read and understood all of the replies.

When originating a non-custodial wallet (that will be forever offline / cold / air-gapped),
I MUST go online to Receive the seed-phrase in the first place,
and that seed-phrase is sent to me along with the wallet number.  Correct?

Thus, THEY (the wallet vendor) have (or had) all relevant details.  Correct?

So, to be Really Safe, we must get only open-source wallets.  Correct?

Hosseinimr93 and Findingnemo, how is Electrum different from that scenario?

Smartvirus, you're assuming that I did delete that photo.
Similarly, I'm assuming and Trusting that the wallet creator / vendor Did Delete (or never saved) the seed phrase.
Hey,...  if the vendor (i.e. Coinomi) is stupid or crooked, crap could happen.

Cool.  I don't understand Why (I'm only Asking questions, not Answering), but some people gave Me merits.
Thanks.  I gave one to Jerome, but his count remained the same.  ?  Ah, well.

Thanks very much for your expertise, people.
5  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do I need a Coinbase Wallet, as well as the Coinbase account? on: November 29, 2021, 08:26:35 PM
Sheenshane, I think I do understand the difference.
The Coinbase.com wallet that I now have is Custodial, wherein THEY host it
and have control of it, and there is no seed-phrase for it.

When I create a Non-custodial wallet (from Coinbase, or from anywhere else),
I'll get a seed-phrase, and I'll control that.

The question remains...
Regardless of where the non-custodial wallet comes from (Coinbase, or anywhere else),
THEY create that seed-phrase and send it to me,
so therefore They have (or had at one time) knowledge of that seed-phrase.
I hafta' Trust that they didn't Save that seed-phrase somewhere.  Correct?

Hosseinimr93, THAT's where the Open-or-closed-source attribute comes in.
A programmer can see the Open-source code,
to hopefully determine if they are saving that seed-phrase.  Correct?

Thanks for the discussion, people.

EXCELLENT, Jerome,...  you apparently understood my questions, and you answered very clearly and completely.
Thanks Very Much.
SO...  I see "Merit" under our names... I assume that's like a "reputation"?  How do I add to yours?

And another question:
If that 12-word-seed-phrase COMES FROM Coinbase, then How can they say that they don't KNOW that phrase?
THEY Created it !
I'm just playing devil's advocate here, thinking of Possibilities.
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Do I need a Coinbase Wallet, as well as the Coinbase account? on: November 27, 2021, 08:41:05 PM
I have a Coinbase.com account which needs only an Email and Password to sign in, but I haven't used it in over three years.
Back then, I bought $20 worth of ETH (which I traded for Privatix -PRIX- which went to $0),
so I do now still have the 42-character ETH wallet ID, but that's the only "secret" number that I have.
(Coinbase does show me the Value of that ETH ID number, at $0.)
I do not have any 12-word-seed-phrase for that.
Did I ever have a 12-word-seed-phrase for that (that I've now lost)?  Is That my Wallet?

OR does that 12-word-seed-phrase Only come with a Wallet, which is a different thing?

Gee, I hope that's not too confusing.

Now, to get back into crypto trading, do I need to also get a Coinbase Wallet, in addition to the Coinbase account?

Thanks very much, people.

8  Other / Beginners & Help / Coinbase uses PLAID to connect my bank account? on: November 22, 2021, 09:26:13 PM
Coinbase fees apparently aren't visible until the final stages of a transaction.
Still, research indicates that the fees are less when using a bank account,
as opposed to using Paypal or a credit card.
Trying to add / connect my bank account, so that I can buy some ETH.
Coinbase goes thru something called PLAID.
I've never heard of PLAID and I Do Not want to give to PLAID the password to my bank account.
What other inexpensive options are there?
Thanks, people.

p.s. Coinbase "contact" and "message us" are both worthless.  Unavailable.

Your car has a few digital signatures ...
HornetsNest: What "digital signatures" are you referring to?
I've studied computer fingerprints, which uniquely identify your machine, but... what does a vehicle have / transmit?
Are you also saying that VIN numbers are History?

BernyJB: I'm not referring to Internet traffic, at all.  Of course, All of that is monitored, and probably recorded.
Re: the Essay...  That's Very Interesting.
Maybe you'd mentioned it to somebody at the bar, who then decided that it needed to be deleted, in the interest of "national security".
Write it again.  It'll make a great movie, someday.

Wow.  I am Loving this Very active and Informative forum.
You people are Great !

... Kucoin is one of the biggest exchanges which allows using it without passing KYC.
Examplens: Thanks for the mention of Kucoin.  Looks good.

NFTs are a scam, they don't have any value, ...
Hapshepsut:  You're welcome to your opinion, and I politely disagree.
NFTs have "value" if somebody is willing to pay.
And I think I have a Brilliant idea that is marketable to a good-sized subset of the population.

... strike Windows off the list and replace it with a clean Linux distro instead.
PrivacyG: Thanks for the advice, but for now, I'll stay with Windose (thru a VPN).
When I get Rich, I'll probably move everything to a Unix machine and a Hardware wallet,
but the learning curve is not yet warranted for the $ amount that I plan to invest.
Forget about PRIX.  I won't be dealing in any obscure coins...
probably just ETH at Opensea, which is hopefully easy to withdraw (every time there's > $10k in there).

... there's a small QR code icon.
JackG: Maybe I still don't fully understand the use for the webcam.
A guess: take a picture of a QR code, and "show" that picture to the Airgapped laptop?
Heck, I could do that with my cell phone,...  yes?

I'm not Real comfortable with QR codes, because I suspect that they could be mis-read.
They are made of a...  what...  maybe 200 x 200 matrix of tiny dots that can be either black or white.
What is there's a speck of dirt on some screen that effectively turns that White dot into a Black dot.
I fear that could result in a completely wrong address.  It could happen?

Thanks for the continuing discussion.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie questions: Wallets, Anonymity, and BlockExplorer... on: November 16, 2021, 10:03:22 PM
Thanks for the replies, people.

JackG, OK, now...  what is Signing?  The glossary at
https://cryptomaniaks.com/cryptocurrency-glossary
defines "Signature" as "a mathematical mechanism for combining a public address with a private address to ensure authenticity and prevent forging."
OK, that would be to sorta' Confirm or Authorize a transaction...  yes?
So, I also found
https://www.ledger.com/academy/cryptos-greatest-weakness-blind-signing-explained
which describes "blind signing".  If I'm not using Ledger's hardware wallet, do I need to be concerned about that?

I read (twice) that entire link that you mentioned.  This:
https://freedomnode.com/blog/how-to-create-and-use-an-offline-bitcoin-wallet-aka-cold-storage-with-electrum/
might explain the same? process a bit more clearly?

Why did you mention the webcam?  What would that be used for?

Upgrade00:
Did you copy down any group or words when you bought this?  (the PRIX)
I do have the 64-character "private key" that was created.
If I recall correctly (three years ago), I did use the Not-Recomnmended method of privacy,
because I was just testing, and it was a small $ amount.  I think that's all I have.

Re: blockexplorer.com, when I plugged the same ID numbers into Etherscan.io,
it Did show some 3-year-old information, but nothing shows at blockexplorer.com.
Is that normal?

Examplens:
Yes, I got the PRIX at Yobit.  And I've since read that Yobit is Bad.  Ah, well.
OK,...  Where do such no-kyc services exist?
OR maybe...  I could just use the existing accounts that were created three years ago?

Thanks very much, people.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies, people.
I'd heard years ago that satellites Could read a car license plate.
Alas, I s'pose not.

I've read about the "basics of crypto wallets" on Many websites.
I have an old laptop; I'll install a clean version of Win 10 on it,
then use it exclusively for Crypto.
I'll install a Desktop wallet (like Exodus, Jaxx Liberty, or ?...).
Question 1: How does one USE the wallet without connecting to the Internet?
Same question: What about an eventual Hardware wallet?

Three years ago, I bought about $20 worth of some crypto,
just to start my crypto education.  Haven't done anything since then.
I cannot now get into Yobit.net...  the account is "blocked".
I cannot sign into Coss.io...  "wrong password" but I DO Know the password.
Coinbase.com says my portfolio balance is $0.
MyEtherWallet.com says my balance (of ETH) is $0.
I know that I Did buy some PRIX (Privatix) crypto, but cannot find it.

I want to get back into crypto, for the purpose of making Big $ via NFTs,
but I'd rather not re-enter my personal info (name, bank, DOB, etc...).
I'd rather remain as anonymous as possible.
Question 2: How to buy some ETH, then move it to the New Desktop wallet?

Suggestions?

And another question: I read about https://blockexplorer.com/
What is that for?
I entered several old Tx ID numbers; it showed nothing.

Thanks, more-experienced people.

15  Other / Beginners & Help / Blockchain P2P network sharing of unused bandwidth on: June 23, 2018, 03:26:32 AM
Admin...  should this post be in some other board?

First, I'm a newbie here, only started studying crypto stuff less than a week ago.
Got interested in it after finding Privatix.io, which uses a blockchain platform for P2P network sharing of unused bandwidth.  Sounds like a TERRIFIC concept.

Wow.  In this week, I've also found several other websites that allegedly do about the same thing, like substratum.net and mysterium.network and orchid.com and sentinelgroup.io .

Anybody here has studied these companies/websites?  I'm not really interested in the INVESTMENT side of this; moreso in USING the service.
But I'd guess that only ONE of the companies will come out on top, as the Leader in the concept, so their coins would probably appreciate more.  That would be nice.
WHERE can I find info comparing these projects?
Do you think it is a viable / workable concept?
Pros and cons of each service?
Do you know of any other projects / websites that offer a similar thing?

Any advice?  Thanks, people.
