21  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Overclock/underclock Radeon 5970/5870 Linux outside BIOS Limits? on: June 20, 2011, 03:11:00 AM
I have spent a considerable amount of time searching the forums and Googling for a way to set the core and memory clock on Linux (Ubuntu 11.04) outside of the bios limits. Many point to AMDOverdriveCtrl but in all of my testing it properly applies clocks if they are within the BIOS limits but do not if it's outside the BIOS limits, voltage is also spotty if outside the normal limits.

If anyone can provide any insight into how to do this without flashing BIOS (I will if I need to) I will be most grateful and will send a little BTC.

You must flash the BIOS from Windows.  Period.

You might have to edit, save and export in windows but flashing? No.

EDIT: Technically you are right, its a Microsoft program "MS-DOS"  Undecided

Honestly BIOS flashing is the way to go. But its been my experience that if clocked too low (memory) it will blue screen in windows. How it works for Ubuntu I haven't tried.

Have you ever tried BIOS flashing your graphics card? Its not as hard as it seems. All you need is a flash drive, MS-DOS, Radeon BIOS Editor and ATIFlash utility. I'll be happy to help if you need more detailed instructions.

Yeah I tried to use Radeon BIOS Editor, ATIFlash on a DOS bootable flash drive but when I run the command "ATIFlash -p 0 bios0.rom" it states the file does not exist.  Undecided

Hmmm maybe I should be typing "ATIFlash -p 0 bios0.bin"?

Nope, I needed to drop the bin to win. Should read "ATIFlash -p 0 filename". Works perfectly fine now. Afterburner opens with correct clocks! Linux here I come!

NVM, switched out mobo without issue this time lol

I suspect all drivers were there so it wasnt a shock to windows. WIN!

I cannot access bitcoin.lc pool either.

Yes, comrpessing it will decrease it by 50%+ as well. When you restore it, it wont be up to date so you will have to download additional blocks.

Are the files to backup named 'blck0001.dat' and 'blkindex.dat'? Why would I want to compress them? Thanks for your help.
27  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Can you back up the block chain? on: June 19, 2011, 12:43:36 AM
It is the most tedious of things to watch. Hours and hours of watching the block chain add up. Can you back this up? Cause every time I switch my motherboard BitCoin client won't open and the "fix" was to delete everything in the users/appdata/roaming/bitcoin folder except for wallet.dat - is there a better way to ensure this won't continue to happen on the next motherboard switch?
28  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830's back in stock Newegg on: June 17, 2011, 07:29:58 PM
Sorry maybe I was wrong, it looks like they actually had two models, one for 109 and one for 119

https://i.imgur.com/VSzta.png

I think I had mixed them up (what's the difference anyway? I got the 109 model 2 weeks ago)

I'm pretty sure those are both the exact same card and someone just typed a '-' in the model name of one and didn't in the other, so it's showing up as 2 different cards.  100297-2L and 100297L...c'mon Newegg Smiley

Actually if you look at the pictures, specifically the back PCB, you can see they are physically two different cards. It would lead me to believe the higher cost one overclocks better because of what looks like (I'm no specialist) VRM's? Or a higher concentration of them? In any case you cannot go wrong with either version.
29  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: MSI Afterburner "Unofficial Overclocking" GUIDE on: June 17, 2011, 07:23:16 PM
Yes! In the settings, there is a check box for "Synchronize settings for similar graphics processors"! Check that, then set it as you would for a single GPU! There is a monitoring screen to the right that will show: GPU1 usage, GPU2 usage, GPU3 usage etc. This monitoring window also shows temp, voltage (on some GPUs), fan speed, clock speeds, amongst others. You can also go into the settings and choose what you see in the monitoring window. The necessary info would be % usage, temp, fan speed, but you could use any combination of parameters!

For individual clocking of multiple GPUs, you would leave the "Synchronize" box un-checked, then you can go into settings, at the top there is a selection bar. Select which GPU you want to alter, click OK!

You, Sir, absolutely rock! Thank you!

Can you overclock 3 GPU's on the same board? (3x5830's) Create profiles?
31  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Drool on: June 16, 2011, 12:44:57 AM
It uses max. 525 watts of power, costs more than a 6990 and is essentially as fast as a 6990 in OC mode.

Don't really see how it's going to be useful for mining unless you get one for free. It even requires 3 power connectors.

I think its running a lucid hydra chip for communication between GPU's. Still not sure how much better if at all it will be.

From what research I've done in order to overclock multiple GPU's (different clocks, some get better than others) you will have to flash each BIOS individually with the settings desired.

Might want to read up here: http://benchmarks.gr/676/radeon-bios-editor-v127/ and http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/154

Do you guys plan on upgrading your servers to handle the load? It seems the BitCoin community is growing fast each day and problems abound from mining pools being down to Mt Gox DDOS and this forum having access problems. You guys so far have handled this massive influx of new users very well. Just thinking a server upgrade would be of some use. My .02BTC
34  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Opinions for Sapphire HD 6790 on: June 13, 2011, 06:05:42 PM
I'm wondering why people are not using Sapp 6790 for mining. It uses 150W for 220 Mhash/sec for $130. Could someone please tell me why this isn't a good mining gpu.

Its not only dollars per hash/s its also how many slots available on the motherboard and wanting to maximize your output. That being said, the 6790 isn't bad.

Google MSI Afterburner.  I used it for my two 6850's and am getting 420mh/s.

Mistype? You mean 6950's right? Would be hard to believe you are pulling 420mh/s from 6850's.

yes from the GUIMiner i clicked on Launch Bitcoin Client as a server.  I am also Mining SOLO.

Looking to fail out of the gate?

Create a miner on one of the pools and use the name of the miner as your username and then input password = profit!
