Hey cool, I did not read that about Gnosis! : )

I bought a little ANC today to express my support.

I hope the Webmaster will be doing a multilingual site so I'd be useful to this Community by translating into German. But well : )
Thanks for the offer to translate. I'm looking in to how to add multilingual support to the site, but this might take some time. In my opinion, the priorities are Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and French. We will probably put up a small bounty for whoever does this.

Why do you think that Zerocoin is some sort of short-term fad with no value?

As you are certainly aware, having all of your transactions on a public ledger, open for all to see, is just inviting someone to connect addresses with real names: This is exactly what people in the government, international corporations, and law enforcement want to do!

Zerocoin offers a way to make transactions anonymously (in the sense that they can't link the origin and destination of a transaction). Isn't this a good thing? No other coin offers this kind of anonymity. This seems to fit in with your political philosophy...

https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Zerocoin

You midunderstand the point.

In the 1980s maybe there was a digital currency that was state of the art for 5 years.

In the 1990s the best deverlopment might have lasted 3 years.

When bitcoin was released it was the most advanced coin for roughly a year or two.

So if zerocoin is released today will all of the new developers flooding into coins just say "well, zerocoin has been released, there is no further development necessary, party's over, everyone go back to their regular job"?

Probably it will be a week or two until the first major improvement another developer adds to it.

Within 5 weeks the zerocoin protocol will be antiquated. Its a step not a destination.
Ok, agreed. Nevertheless, anonymity is a political statement in itself. Bitcoin turned down the opportunity to implement zerocoin...
163  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Official Anoncoin chat thread (including history) on: July 29, 2014, 08:45:48 PM
I mean, the ZeroCoin implementation is a very big goal.
I believe the programmer/s are capable of doing so.

What I ask myself however if the ZC implementation brings this coin forward in a big way.

Will Anoncoin/Zerocoin not be obsolete once ZeroCash launches end of 2014?

In theory the Anonymity level is like that (from low to high)

Cloakcoin/Darkcoin - Anoncoin(with ZC) - Zerocash

That statement does not make the Development redundant, however I ask myself if the people holding the Coin will be able to profit from this : ) I hope it will go off like a bomb and gets the Coin to Coindesk and other famous news sites, but from my experience ... I'm not sure.

How do you guys feel about it?

Keep in mind

When bitcoin was released it was state of the art. Quickly others improved it. Now its algorhytm is considered primitive. People still value bitcoin because it was the first major attempt to take a credible poke at the corrupt financial system. It never needed hype yet it will always have value.

Looking at trends in crypto, it makes no sense whatsoever to imagine any coin will have long term value because of its algorhythm, sha or script or zerocoin or whatever. More and more devs are getting interested in coins. Soon govt wankers who make $200k a year writing Orwellian stuff for the nsa or gchq will realize they can make far more with coins. There will be coins with a 1 megabyte blockchain, etc etc. All completely meaningless because soon after that will be the 100 kilobyte blockchain etc. Maybe just one simple number that sums up all past transactions plus the current block.

Anoncoin and every other coin will either attract people for 'political' (using the term broadly) reasons, or it will sink.

Anoncoin has a huge headstart over almost every other coin but it seems people are backing away from its real value in favor of short term things like zerocoin. Important short term things but still short term.
I agree with almost everything you say, but....

Here is the anoncoin wiki article describing the difference between zerocoin and zerocash

https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Zerocash

Zerocash has two major problems: The setup requires trusted third parties, and the total money supply can not be monitored.
165  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]ZeroCoin[ZERO] - first sha256/scrypt/x11 PoW/PoS coin with zerocoin support on: July 29, 2014, 08:11:37 PM
As someone who has been closely following the anoncoin implementation of Zerocoin (see https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Anoncoin_Wiki), it appears that this project is not legit.

1. The developers here do not seem to understand the difference between Zerocash and Zerocoin.
2. The developers have not described if their implementation will depend on trusted third parties or not.
3. If the implementation is trustless, how did they generate the RSA UFO? What is the bit length? Did they attempt to factor it?
4. What exactly is the proof-of-work algorithm?
5. If you are using proof of work, then why do you also say that you are using proof of stake?

There are so many questions, and no answers.

Beware

SCAM.

Where is YOUR white paper. That pdf is just the Miers et al. 2013 paper.
167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Official Anoncoin chat thread (including history) on: July 28, 2014, 07:51:29 AM
For those of you who are interested, here are a couple new articles that have been added to the wiki:

Cryptographic accumulator: https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Cryptographic_accumulator
Commitment scheme: https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Commitment_scheme
Zero-knowledge proofs: https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Zero-Knowledge_Proofs
Zerocash: https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Zerocash

I still need to add a few technical details regarding the exact zero-knowledge proofs that zerocoin uses, and I'll get to that after reading the paper.

If you want access to edit these or any other article on the wiki, please PM me, and I will set up an account for you.
168  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Official Anoncoin chat thread (including history) on: July 26, 2014, 06:15:05 PM
I just created the page

Places that accept Anoncoin

on the Anoncoin wiki

https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Places_that_accept_Anoncoin

If you know of any places, please let me know and I will add them. If you want an account to edit the wiki directly, just ask myself or Geekz, and we will set you up with one.

[...]
Would it be possible to give a conservative, realistic estimate for when the Zerocoin testnet will be up an running? I think that most of us realize that software projects take longer than anticipated, and some of the discontent in this thread is based on the fact that previous estimates were, in retrospect, overly optimistic. If you could make a conservative estimate, and then multiply the time by two, that will shut many people up for awhile...
[...]

September 20th.

Thanks for all your hard work Gnosis!

Is this still a realistic goal? I don't mean to rush you, in fact I mean to see you rewarded!

We know that the zerocoin implementation project is very complex.  Is there some amount of ANC or BTC we can provide (along with lots of caffeine and snacks) along the way to help motivate you reach certain checkpoints?

I think there are others in the community who would be willing to help fund a bounty of some sort for your work, so long as you keep providing us with updates.

We think you and the entire development team are great!
We've set up a general donation address (see here https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Donate), but unless Gnosis makes a specific request, this will mostly be used for web and pr related things. As soon as we reach 100 ANC, some of the first bounties we might start thinking about will be a new web design, translations for other languages, and the writing of an article that compares the various bitcoin-related privacy solutions that are currently available.

FWIW, here's my entrant into the moto milieu:

"Anoncoin - because your business is none of my business."
my is too specific, our is better i'd say
I just updated the byline

https://anoncoin.net/

For info, I've modified a lot of the text on the web site over the past couple of weeks. If you have any comments, even for typos, send me a PM. The "services" page still needs work. Also, don't bother me about graphic design issues: This will be fixed by someone else...

171  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Official Anoncoin chat thread (including history) on: July 18, 2014, 12:08:42 PM
Is the Zerocoin implementation going to be trustless? As I understand it, there's a key that needs to be destroyed. If that can't be overcome, this coin has no future.
Yes, it will be trustless. You can read more on the wiki:

Anoncoin is now accepting donations:

Acoin7tkEib9d8BfomQYUK66z5fhwN3DgV

Most of your donations will be used for the setting up of bounties for public relations work, but some may also be used for specific code development tasks as well. Specific bounties that we envision for the immediate future include

  • Creation of press releases
  • Writing of Blog entries
  • Writing of popular articles about Anoncoin
  • Writing of in-depth articles on the wiki and
  • Web design and support.

As soon as enough ANC has been donated, we will set up a dedicated page describing the conditions attached to these bounties.

For your info, the above public address is owned by the lead developer, Meeh.

I would not send anything before it is confirmed that Meeh control that adress.

I will donate when is is confirmed.  Smiley
Right, you should be skeptical. It is posted here

https://wiki.anoncoin.net/Anoncoin_Wiki

(but I made the edit) and it was discussed in the #anoncoin IRC channel about an hour ago. I'll make sure to get him, or one of the other developers to confirm this here.

The web site is extremely slow, and sometimes it hangs up. Try again in a few minutes...

I am having a wierd problem with the Anoncoin client that I hope someone can help me with. In short, about a week ago, the client stopped synching with the network. In looking at the debug.log file, there a lots of errors like the following:

Does anyone know how to fix this?
176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Official Anoncoin chat thread (including history) on: July 07, 2014, 09:44:14 AM
So it has been over a week since my ANC withdrawals "processed" yet I still have no coins. I have submitted multiple tickets to support, but they couldn't be more useless. This is a lot of money for me and I see that this is a problem a lot of people are having. Has anyone actually gotten their coins yet?

my first issue is as of 6/26, yesterday I tried to withdraw again... same problem
nothing has been resolved. all withdrawals still stuck, damn cryptsy
we should open a specific thread on this issue, and insult those assholes.. apparently it works.

I think that we, as a community, should switch en masse to Bluetrade: https://bleutrade.com/

The volume there is very low, so what if we all do the following?

For each bid or sell order that you place with Cryptsy, consider placing the same order at Bluetrade for about 1/4 of the amount.

As soon as there is a critical volume, people will naturally switch.

This is just to let you all know that I have finished my work on the new, official, Anoncoin Wiki

http://wiki.anoncoin.net/Main_Page

Thanks to Geekz for getting this set up, and getting the ball rolling.

Among the entries are the following:

  • Anoncoin (cryptocurrency)
  • Anoncoin address
  • Articles about Anoncoin and Zerocoin
  • Block chain explorers
  • Exchanges
  • FAQ
  • How to guides
  • I2P
  • Internet resources
  • Mining pools
  • RSA UFO
  • Zerocoin

Most of these articles are in good shape, but some are incomplete (such as block chain explorers, exexchanges, mining pools, and I2P).

Please feel free to modify any of these entries, to add new content, or to add questions to the FAQ. You do not even need an account to make modifications, so: Don't complain to me, get involved!
178  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Official Anoncoin chat thread (including history) on: July 05, 2014, 10:36:56 PM
So we would need a simple explanation ina TL;DR style. How about something like this?

Okay, something complex is better than nothing. It was just my opinion.

Is the wiki only specifically about the coin or is it meant to educate people about 'anonymous' and other issues that might be of interest?

Wiki will be all about Anoncoin only. But we need to add articles about i2p , zerocoin , etc as they are also very related to anoncoin.

Sorry if I am rude, but what is more related to anoncoin than anonymous and fairplay politics? Most of the people who will be drawn to this coin in the next upwave will be drawn to the political association of the name.

At the very least maybe a link page with a broad choice of libertarian and pro free speech sites, maybe even activist sites like http://photographyisnotacrime.com/

Again, anonymity is only a feature, in a few weeks or so it will be easily pasted into the code of any coin. The core of anoncoin should be something not so easily copied by the hordes of new flybynight coins. Its anonymity appeal will pass quickly but if it helps people network with likeminded folk, and inspires a bit...

If you or k1773r create a resources link page on the wiki I will try to populate it with fair links and any that seem inappropriate you can delete.
Could you find about three links that provide a good introduction to the anonymous movement? I don't think that the purpose of the wiki is to provide a definitive resource for this, but at the same time I also think that we could add a few links so that people who don't know anything about this can learn more.

I would propose adding three links to this page, along with a one sentence summary of web site/resource:

http://wiki.anoncoin.net/Internet_resources

I've made a bunch of modifications to the anoncoin wiki

http://wiki.anoncoin.net/Main_Page

In particular, the main page, anoncoin, and zerocoin. Please correct any mistakes I might have made.

I've also added a FAQ and internet resource page. Could someone help with answering the questions I identified?

Here's an interesting article about CoinJoin/SharedCoin:

Weak Privacy Guarantees for SharedCoin Mixing Service
http://www.coinjoinsudoku.com/advisory/

to note:

Quote
SharedCoin will be suitable for protection against unskilled examiners of the Bitcoin blockchain until user-friendly analysis tools are released to the public.

Quote
A tool for analyzing SharedCoin and other CoinJoin-based mixing protocols will be released approximately two weeks following this advisory to allow SharedCoin users adequate time to protect their privacy.
