What did we do?

We recently classified the entire cryptocurrency market into fine grained sectors e.g. Gaming, Gambling, Social Media, Smart Contract Platforms etc. We wanted to see how each sector performed historically. Did a particular sector greatly outperform others? Did a promising sector actually underperform?

What did we find?

The largest cryptoassets (Bitcoin and Ethereum) both underperformed in terms of market cap growth in the observation period (+84% and +76% respectively), while smaller cap projects grew stronger (+167%). On the second level of our cryptoasset classification, top performers are: Non-Ethereum General Smart Contract Platforms (+602%) and Enterprise Smart Contract Platforms (+285%). Privacy-focused cryptoassets significantly underperformed with only +30% market cap growth. On the third classification level, Gambling & Gaming subcategory is the leader of growth (+423%), while Tokenized Assets (+7%) are the clear loser.
