1  Economy / Economics / Re: The Bitcoin anti-crash on: June 24, 2011, 07:23:11 PM
It's not that people don't trust in BTC (mostly). It's MtGox that had problems. Maybe they'll be a shock when MtGox opens, but I don't expect a big change for too long. I'll just wait it out, since every time they'res been a big shock the market has stabilized pretty fast.
2  Economy / Economics / Re: Namecoin prices plummeting - opinions? on: June 24, 2011, 07:21:19 PM
Namecoin serves a niche that doesn't appeal as widely as Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a currency/commodity that you can directly exchange for goods or cash. Namecoin at its heart is based on making a decentralized DNS.

It's not surprising that a BTC/NMC exchange popped up relatively early, though.

What you'll notice is that the exchange rate depends on the difficulty ratio between BTC/NMC. the NMC -> BTC rate SHOULD be around the difficulty ratio for NMC vs. BTC.

People expect that you'd get similar profits from mining NMC vs. BTC, but the fact is that people can currently use BTC for much more, while NMC only really has 1 role, so you see most of the trades going for the majority of miners going from NMC -> BTC.

Also, BTC difficulty is skyrocketing, while NMC difficulty is actually falling.

This means, that if you're mining NMC to convert to BTC to sell, sell it now. The difficulty ratio will plummet and so will the exchange rate.

I forgot the site that shows this, but the difficulty ratio is going to go for a massive drop really quickly. Soon your NMC will be trading at 0.010 BTC each.

Should've sold mine when the difficulty ratio / exchange rate was ~0.063.

Also, look at the instantaneous difficulty. That can hint at where the exchange rate is going.

Let's say the room is a pantry about 6 x 8 ft in size. My cards are at a constant 90 80 70 C. The room gets pretty hot.

Is this a fire hazard?
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Slots matter? on: June 21, 2011, 01:41:51 AM
I have 3 5830's mining away on an MSI FX890-UD70 mobo on the first 3 slots closest to the cpu.

Can I take the middle one out without any problems, or does there need to be an order in which you put in the gpus?

Thanks

I have 3x 5830s mining away, but since my roommates think the rig is too loud, it's been moved to a small room with terrible ventilation.

The temps on the cards are 90.5C 85.5C 75C with a 900/325 clock.

Is this a big concern?
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm Kevin, here's my side. on: June 20, 2011, 09:27:23 PM
Honestly, I think you should just keep the coins. I personally was sleeping when the crash happened, but as a matter of principle I don't think actual BTC transactions should be reversed once finalized in the chain. Reversing the trades on MtGox's servers, though, is up to the owners, as there aren't actual BTC transactions being added to the chain.

MtGox screwed up though, and they should take the loss.
7  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: anyone remember four loko (original, caffeinated) ? on: June 20, 2011, 06:02:41 AM
Yep, they stopped making the caffeinated kind, as far as I can tell.

Still tastes like shit, IMO.
8  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Is mining hardware still profitable? on: June 19, 2011, 09:17:35 AM
Also, it's more "worth it" if you have another use for the hardware, such as gaming.

Do you burn the string by itself just like that? Like a really long candle?

How fast does it burn?
10  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Are all these Ponzi schemes and other cons legal? on: June 19, 2011, 07:03:56 AM
In these cases I guess it's good that BTC isn't a "currency" Tongue
11  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: [Sell] NEW and USED Sapphire 5830 on: June 19, 2011, 12:14:02 AM
I got them for 120, including tax.

On top of that, adding in my additional shipping costs to the buyer (USPS Priority) would be the least I would go for.
12  Other / Obsolete (selling) / [Sell] NEW and USED Sapphire 5830 on: June 18, 2011, 10:52:41 PM
I have one brand new sealed Sapphire Radeon HD 5830 Xtreme 100297L ATI/AMD GPU that I want to sell.

I bought 4 of them about a week or two ago but then realized only 3 would fit with my current case and PSU. Sucks.

If you're interested just post below. I was going to sell it on eBay but wanted to post here first.

Will accept Paypal or BTC (I'd like a bit more due to market volatility)

I will only ship to continental US with USPS.

The other 3 I'm leaning toward keeping, but I'll take offers too.

14  Other / Beginners & Help / Setting clocks for Sapphire 5830s in Ubuntu on: June 14, 2011, 06:58:53 AM
How do I set my 5830's to 900+ shaders ~300 memory in Ubuntu?

aticonfig can set the clocks high but not the memory low

amdoverdrivectrl can set the memory low but not the clocks high

Is there anyway to set the settings without flashing the cards?

Wow that's a good one.
16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 4x 5830s power supply on: June 14, 2011, 01:14:37 AM
Yes, but I need a total of 8x 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.

The PSU has 4 native 6+2 connectors, and 3 molex. I'm using 2 of the molex ones with converters, but I seem to need one more 6 pin for the 4th gpu.
17  Other / Beginners & Help / 4x 5830s power supply on: June 14, 2011, 01:09:29 AM
Hello,

I currently have 3 Sapphire 5830's running on a MSI 890FXA-GD70 mobo with a Cooler Master GX 750w PSU.

I have another 5830 that I haven't figured out how to add on to the rig.

There are 4x PCI-E 6 + 2 pin power connectors and 3 4-pin peripheral power connectors on the PSU, and I'm currently using 6 of them for the 3 GPUs.

If I add another GPU I don't have enough power connectors, but I remember recommendations for this specific PSU and MOBO combo for the quad 5830 rig.

Any help?
