From my perspective  - potentially flawed - overall miners do not tend to be very whimpy unless they are completely selling all of their coins on a regular basis.. and maybe even failing to study into bitcoin.. .. and since I was a bit presumptive in not even recalling that you had a mining background, that means several of my premises for my framing of "what is whimpy" may well have been off in the first place..

I used to sell all my coins at the beginning (to cover power and equipment costs). In hindsight it would have been much better to accrue debt instead of selling at $300. Lesson was learned at some point in 2016, just in time for the bull run of 2017, and that's how I ended up with some coins to hodl and was able to get my mining "farm" to a no-pressure-to-make-money hobby type of thing.

So it depends on how you look at it. I did not invest $50 or $100 per week on an exchange. My investment was through equipment and electric bills and was kinda undisciplined at first. I didn't even have the goal of accumulating bitcoins, was mining mostly shitcoins initially, so that I could get bitcoins so that I could buy proper bitcoin ASICs, etc.

Not only that, but also - if I had put all that money into Bitcoin directly in theory I'd have a lot more bitcoins now (some of those ASICs were woefully unprofitable), but in practice I think I would have dumped them early anyway. All the lessons learned along the way had to to be learned. Spending 8 BTC to make 5 BTC is a good lesson, trust me Grin

I think almost every single one of us has a kind of tendency to want to overdo it (and want to gamble and wants to expedite our process of becoming more richie faster).. and nearly every single one of us has to fight back those kinds of urges.. because there are also folks attempting to tempt us into spinning the wheel.

For sure, none of us should necessarily act as too much of a prude on these kinds of balances, because each person does need to find his/her balance and to feel some freedom in rolling the dice if they want to roll the dice...  point.. and frequently I believe that there still can be ways that regular folks can still gamble with part of their funds in order to scratch aspects of their itch and to have a little fun.. maybe less than 10% of their value or some prudent amount.. should be fine..  but again and again and again.. the inclination to gamble tempts many folks to go too far without having adequate principle preservations (building) mechanisms in place.. and sometimes we do hear about those guys who had nothing and went all in.. and maybe some of that is spin. . but some of the real success rags to riches do involve outrageous kinds of doubling, tripling down.

To me DCA is already enough of a gamble (will it go down? OR UP? WILL IT?#!??), beyond that I'd just go to a casino if I wanted more excitement. So I don't really have much of an itch to catch a bigger dip or dump at some specific point (my occasional dumpenings are dictated by bills and tax implications more than anything else).

Got some more cornage at 19, set up a new buy at 17.

Edit: grammar.
983  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 18, 2022, 03:45:38 AM

I'm least excited about Wall Street buying into Bitcoin (also ETFs and other BS), it's money for the people, not money for money bags, but the technology is such that anyone can own bitcoins so obviously money bags will have the most of it.

I look at it as kind-of a trap. They can own more of it, sure. They just can't print more of it.

Doesn't stop them from trying with all sorts of derivatives and shit. But I do hope it all bites them in the ass, so "trap" sounds about right.
984  Economy / Reputation / Re: DT1 and DT2 members who have negative feedback (or are banned) on: June 18, 2022, 03:40:38 AM
I have been either DT1 or DT2 for many months/years now - continuously.  Where the climate DT deniers find it hard to grasp is there is no actual difference as to whether a person has ten people on DT1 who trust them and twenty people on DT1 distrust them OR twenty people on DT1 trust them and ten people on DT1 who distrust them, they are STILL on DT either 1 or 2.

Whatever lies you need to tell yourself to help you cope is perhaps fine, but lying publicly is not cool. There is a substantial difference between the two scenarios you described.

"a person has ten people on DT1 who trust them and twenty people on DT1 distrust them" - this person loses almost all of their DT privileges. Their inclusions/exclusions don't affect DT2. Their trust ratings are not visible by default. The only thing they have is the ability to "downvote" or "upvote" other DT1 members.

"twenty people on DT1 trust them and ten people on DT1 who distrust them" - this person has all DT privileges.

"they are STILL on DT either 1 or 2" false in the first case.
985  Economy / Reputation / Re: Reputation: nullius is a cunt ✔ on: June 18, 2022, 03:17:30 AM
Cuntius is having a spectacular meltdown. Some names below have been replaced because I don't want to spread the nonsensical accusations but you can click the links if you're interested. Basically Bob posted something along the lines of "Alice needs money", and that triggered our "suicidally [sic] desperate" clowntroll:

I am not accusing Alice of lying about whatever situation he claims to be in.  You are inserting that here as your strawman, Bob.

Some people repeatedly get themselves into desperate situations.  (I know this, all too personally.)  Maybe he was telling the truth before—maybe not.  Maybe he is telling the truth now—maybe not.  It is irrelevant to anything that I said.

I said that Alice has PM-begged before—and now, you are publicly begging on his behalf.  Right in front of someone who is clearly at least as desperate as Alice, but who is taking the high road.  You’re the jackass.  Don’t you care about my desperate situation?

Incidentally, this is why begging is against forum rules.  Lots of people are genuinely in need.

So, are you a betting man, Bob?

Edited to add:  Smooth move.  Begging for money—begging, not only shameless, but with audaciously sanctimonious airs!—right in front of someone who is suicidally desperate for money (name checks out), “unwanted BTC” (lol) or otherwise, but who is taking the high road, not being a shameless beggar, not violating forum rules, etc.

You are essentially calling me a liar, when I tell the truth.  You are libelling me.  (Libel, not slander:  Libel is written; slander is spoken.)

You speak without evidence.  You even say some wild nonsense as if you will invoke the law on me (LOL).

I will not let that pass.  You owe me a retraction with an apology, at the very least.

Now, since you are so sure:  Will you put your money where your mouth is?  How much are you willing to pay me in compensation for smearing my reputation here, not to mention being inexcusably rude to me, if at least one proved past PM beg from Alice turns up?

Stop evading.  Stop accusing the accuser.  And stop lying about me.

Tick, tock.  Appropriate actions have been commenced to obtain public proof of Alice's past PM begging.

Alice has a very limited time to confess publicly, right here, that he has a past history of PMing out of the blue (not even to anyone with whom he had prior correspondence!) with explicit asking for money due to alleged difficult circumstances, i.e. begging.  I had no prior grudge against him, personally; to the contrary, I kinda liked the chap.  But if he leaves me hanging here due to his own behaviour—if he doesn’t come clean, then I have no qualms about how much worse this will soon go for his reputation.

Bob is a coward, a thoughtless fool, and a stupid n00b.  He rudely insults his betters, and he jumps to conclusions when he has no evidence either way.  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!  He owes me an apology and a retraction—and he had damn well better put his money where his mouth is.

In abstract justice, he owes me compensation outright for what he said about me above.  But I am willing to make it a wager.  10x odds, since he is so sure—and 10x seems objectively fair; how likely is it that a new account knows something about Alice's past PMs?  Not to mention, I really, really want to gain back a whole bitcoin!

At current prices, if I catastrophically drain my resources to buy BTC that I cannot properly afford, then I can escrow 0.1 BTC on a wager against Bob’s 1.0 BTC in the same escrow.  I know of reputable deep-green escrows who would be disinterested parties here, who should certainly be acceptable to everyone here if they are willing to take the deal.  I require PGP-signed contracts or equivalent on all sides, with precisely stated terms—well, no good escrow will handle a deal without that, anyway.

Deal?  You seem so sure!

I put my money where my mouth is.  I put my money where my mouth is—even when I just lost most of my assets, I am almost broke, and I recently admitted to some significant worries about “food security”.

Does Bob put his money where his mouth is?
986  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 18, 2022, 02:57:39 AM
Incidentally, I had noticed some of you historical posts that have a tendency to have a tone that happens to be a wee bit less excited about our lil precious than what I feel about myself - in my own self-assessment.

I'm very excited about the technology. I'm not as excited about the red-green-dildo thingies, they're kinda incidental to why I registered on the forum (mining).

I'm least excited about Wall Street buying into Bitcoin (also ETFs and other BS), it's money for the people, not money for money bags, but the technology is such that anyone can own bitcoins so obviously money bags will have the most of it.

But, sure of course it would not be easy to judge your seemingly less enthusiasm about dee cornz without knowing more of your various personal financial and psychological circumstances - and not even that I would want to necessarily know intricate details unless maybe we happen to be in a bar shooting the shit.. and then we might get into those kinds of discussions.. you never know?

The vast majority of my corn is mined, not purchased, if that helps you understand why this whole wall observation thing is just an amusement for me Smiley

Or to be more accurate, the vast majority of corns I had were dumped and wasted in the careless 2015s, a small fraction that I still have makes me a hodler, and now that mining isn't what it used to be I turned to buying yet smaller fractions using other sources of income because why not.

By the way, it seems to me that I only name-call my fellow forum members as being too whimpy when they provide me with some level of detail in which I can hook onto it.. hahahaha looking at you Biodom.. (I cannot help myself sometimes)

You, me and Biodom have a similar forum age, so in that regard, sometimes there are some abilities to frame these kinds of whimpy or not matters in terms of something like a quasi-middle of the road $50 per week DCA strategy, which should have gotten such person somewhere in the ballpark of 22.6 BTC, but surely we all make mistakes.. and sometimes we end up having to start over.. like my own ability to ONLY get above 0.63 BTC.. but still I am not talking about me.. Instead, I have been attempting to talk about ways to attempt to measure whether even some relatively modest BTC accumulation strategies may well have ended up bringing some comfortable results.. even when mistakes happen to have been made along the way..

Well, that makes me very not whimpy, if I understand your criteria correctly LOL

Historically, it was pretty damned common for me to suggest that guys and gal just get started with DCA investing into BTC with $10 per week, and since March 2020, I have been more inclined to suggest $100 per week.. even though I understand that some folks are in economies in which they are really struggling even to come up with $10 per week extra cashflow... but we try to do what we can, and generally speaking quite a few normies with cashflow in western societies should be able to reasonably come up with $100 per week or more to invest into bitcoin.

If someone's poor economy allows them only $10, then even if the absolute result is smaller than it would be in a better economy, it's still likely to be a relatively good result for their poor (presumably lower cost of living) economy. However it has to be a truly disposable can-afford-to-lose no-risk-of-mindrusting amount of money. If someone puts $11 in but then have to dump their coins on a dip because they overextended themselves... it's no good. And if $0 is all they can afford, it should be $0.

Other than that, DCA is what 99% (being generous here assuming that at least 1% know how markets work) of people should do instead of chasing dildos. Unfortunately - not specific to Bitcoin but also quite typical to other savings types - many people fuck it up and end up poor when they could have easily afforded comfortable retirement.

goldkingcoiner is a coward, a thoughtless fool, and a stupid n00b.  He rudely insults his betters

I'm still amazed at how much more of a clown you become with each post.
987  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Deep dive intro culture of russia-Ukraine war on: June 17, 2022, 11:27:03 PM
This is the main problem of westerners. They're not a bad people and they don't want to imagine that they faced the problem the same as their granda in the past (Third Reich). It's easier to imagine that it's not about imperialism and fascism.

I meant the Russian "nation", population, or whatever it should be called (not the government or its propagandists). Is the population as a whole hopelessly totalitarian/imperialist, or just transiently brainwashed? They seemingly had the same chance to reach for freedom like everyone else in the former Soviet block in the 1990s and they managed to squander it. On the other hand, they haven't had much (or any really) non-imperialist/non-totalitarian history in the last few hundred years. Can this be fixed in a generation? Two? Three? Will it take a revolution and/or civil war to get there?
988  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russian Invasion of Ukraine[In Progress] on: June 17, 2022, 10:44:05 PM
Despite your objection, some experts are of the opinion about the "War of the West to the last Ukrainian" not only in Russia, but also in the United States and China, so this statement is not correct to call a "Russian propaganda take".

You still don't get the whole "freedom of speech" thing. People in the West are allowed to peddle Putin's propaganda. That doesn't make it any more credible.

Code:
"You’re making it possible for the Ukrainian people to defend themselves, without us having to risk
getting into a third world war by sending in American soldiers fighting Russian soldiers".

Not quite the same thing, is it though?

According to Bloomberg

Opinion piece. It's disingenuous to say "according to Bloomberg". Not that it would matter - see above - but it's a typical Kremlin propaganda trick ("XYZ newspaper stated" -> newspaper published an opinion piece; "it was said in US Congress" -> one congressperson said something, etc). It may impress Russian population conditioned with one party, no opposition, no free press, where everything that's allowed to be published must be official government position, but it's meaningless on this site. Just give it up already.

And multiple times I saw comments from people that ORDLO heads are looking for fools when shelling happens from occupied territory and they blame Ukraine for it.

Yeah there are even videos of launch-impact within seconds, obviously from Russian/DNR side into Donetsk for some inexplicable reason. TBH it doesn't make sense just like Russian accusations of Ukrainians bombing their own hospitals/theaters/etc didn't make sense, so I don't even know what to make of it. Maybe some forcibly-drafted no-military-experience DNRians are clueless at what they're doing and just shelling in random directions.
989  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Deep dive intro culture of russia-Ukraine war on: June 17, 2022, 10:16:05 PM
I haven't closely followed Russian politics for the last 20-25 years but being somewhat familiar with the late-Soviet period I find that (oversimplified of course):

1) Russians are stuck in Brezhnev's lying-and-thieving totalitarian mindset of a failed state that pretends to be a "superpower", while most of the rest of the USSR, including Ukraine, has moved on.
2) The West has completely forgotten (or never even understood it properly) how irrational and erratic Russian dictators are, and expect some sort of predictable response to sanctions etc. Never going to happen.

Of course there are many more moving parts here, like the massive Russian troll farms that got Western conspiratards hooked on a tasty diet of clickbait and now use them to spread Putin's agenda. Even on this forum you can see the same people peddling e.g. US election conspiracies and anti-Ukraine propaganda.

I'd like to believe that Russia as a country can fix itself like most post-Soviet shitholes did, and it isn't really all about imperialism and totalitarianism, but the more the war goes on the more I think that I'm probably wrong about that.
990  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 17, 2022, 02:08:24 PM
It seems that the longer that any of us have been in BTC, then we figure out some systems that kind of work for us to attempt to be able to take advantage of the BIGGER BTC price swings...   buy more frequently or even more quantity when the BTC price is going down.. and don't buy as much when it is going up or maybe even selling some BTC when the price is going up.. but then perhaps at some point, there might be situations in which there is a feeling of having too much BTC, too.. if that is possible...?   perhaps?  perhaps?

Maybe. But I'm nowhere near "too much" and I think I'm sufficiently non-aggressive at buying to ever get to "too-much"
(again, except for catastrophes). Everyone should do their own math and figure out the balance of comfort and excitement. I'm not trying to take advantage of some specific swing or trend. Questionable risk/reward aside, for me it's just too time-consuming and/or stressful to attempt that.

I have sold small-ish amounts three times in the last 2 years: at ~12, ~37, and ~51 (or 52 or whatever) so not particularly well "timed".  But thanks to the recent dippening, only one of those sales hasn't been bought back yet, and even if it dips below 12 I still won't have "too much" but I will have a lot more BTC than I started with, so my stress-free low-maintenance get-rich-or-bankrupt-slowly "strategy" seems to be working fine.
991  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 17, 2022, 02:59:17 AM
Easier said that done, suchmoon.. especially if wanting to carry out something like that in a somewhat seemingly perpetual way.. such as all the way down to zero. (in theory). .

I recall some guys saying that they were "all in" (or they ran out of money) when we dipped below $50k... and we are way into Down price territory that even the staunchest of DOWNity preparers (who are bullish.. so also wanting to prepare for UP) have decent odds of running out of money...

What happens if we run out of money?  Is that possible?  then have to go into HODL status, no?  Surely if you have a cashflow then largely that would be "technically" characterized as DCA at the point of running out of money and buying as the money comes in.

As long as fiat exists in some substantial form, I think I will always have some sort of fiat revenue (job/business/real estate/retirement/etc), so barring catastrophic health failure or other life-altering events - yes, I can ride it pretty much to zero. Not that I'm planning that. Right now for example I'm just setting up an order for 10% of my free cash ~10% below spot, I don't give two shits about TA or some other woodoo, when the orders hits or price moves in the other direction I redo the order, etc. So even if it drops precipitously and quickly, I won't really run out of cash albeit the buys can get smaller.

All-in, or margin, or any of that tarding nonsense - nah. I'm happy to leave that to shitcoiners, Reddit gamestoppers, and other noobs itching to get fucked by Wall Street.

01. We have 10 players, do we want to pursue 12?

I'd prefer 10, not particularly opposed to 12 either. I have no experience with larger leagues obviously, but I'm a bit concerned if everyone will have the motivation for the whole season with more people and weaker teams.

If we go with 12 let's pay top 3.

02. Consensus for the platform seems to be Yahoo, or "I don't care," which is the same thing.

ok

03. ChiBitCTy volunteered for comish, no one else wants the job.

I hear Hue's concerns but if the commissioner is just managing the league and not making decisions (e.g. PPR vs no PPR) then I don't see a problem.

Someone wanting to do it is better than someone who may not always have time etc.

04. I held the funds last year, happy to serve the roll once again.

ok

05. I suggest we keep it between 0.0015 and 0.0025BTC before suchmoon has his say.

I'm fine with 0.025 of course Grin

No, seriously, Bitcoin is worthless right now, let's make it at least the equivalent of $500.

06. PPR votes so far are 2 in favor, 4 opposed, see below

Count me as opposed.

i have since diverted some cash to more btc buys. did 25% spot at 21k, have 25% at 19.6k (prev ath), 25% at 18.2k and 25% at 17k

I'm finding that setting up such buys is making me enjoy the dips in ways that I otherwise wouldn't. I'm happy when I wake up and bitcoin is down 10%.

This should be mandatory therapy for every WOer. Noobs should do it on margin. JJG should do it twice a day.
995  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russian Invasion of Ukraine[In Progress] on: June 16, 2022, 10:54:24 PM
This is interesting (i mean anthropological interest) russian propaganda take: west will fight against russia till last ukrainian.
Why it's interesting? Mostly because it shows ukrainians as some kind of brainless animals - 1

Projection.

Similar to their obsession with Zelensky (accusations of drug use etc), as if he's some sort of Putin-like dictator and personally responsible for the war.

Propaganda works best when it's based on familiar concepts.

Over the past two days, I have received very hateful PMs from this user (which I have subsequently reported)

As I said in the other thread, I don't understand why this user hasn't been banned. Between public threats against MiLkz and these types of PMs there's isn't really any plausible reason for their continued existence on the forum.
997  Other / Meta / Re: Bump locked topic, should this be allowed? on: June 15, 2022, 04:30:04 AM
Yeah, it's pretty annoying but with time when people no longer care about the troll, he will just give up once he finally gets to figure out that it's a waste of time.

It's a bit more than that. The (now deleted) threads that examplens mentioned had an offer to pay for MiLkz dox, with thinly veiled threats. I thought that used to a bannable offence but for some reason the user is still not banned.

I hope Saylor knows what he is doing and can survive this bearish trend not only in crypto but also in the stock market. Undecided

I might have said this once or twice or a few dozen times, but "investors" using OPM and leverage and other fiat banking/investment nonsense is not good for Bitcoin. Same goes for Bukele's "investment".

On the bright side, Bitcoin will survive this as it always does. Couldn't care less if Saylor or Bukele survive it.

Working on this huge giant company is indeed very scary if you are a regular employee that just want to have a happy job on crypto.

A layoff - particularly in an "at-will" technology job - is not something to fear, it's something to expect and be ready for.

On the bright side, there's a new paragraph in the resume for the next job.
