221  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SolidCoin assisting the drop in BTC value this week? on: August 26, 2011, 06:26:03 PM
In a rough estimation after viewing some graphs it sure is interesting to note that in the last 5 days BTC has dropped about 20% in value vs USD and that SolidCoin (now 6 days old), is pushing almost 900Gh/s in hashing power and it's price in BTC has been gaining serious ground all week.

I would certainly think that an influx of BTC used to purchase SC could be assisting in the price drop of BTC relative to the USD (and other fiats)...especially if you consider the possibility that the SC might be bought up with BTC that has otherwise been sitting around in wallets doing nothing.

What are your thoughts?

CoinMan

I was about to answer that it's totally unrelated, when some logical explanation dawned on me:

The marginal miners who were making < 1 BTC per day, jumped into Solidcoins, and with a bit of luck possibly made 5 or more BTC per day. Since they started this mining thing so as to get rich quick, they become happy, and immediately sell their BTCs for some cash, patting themselves on the back for making this work. BTC price falls as a result. There must have been more than 20K BTC changing hands on the SC exchange.
222  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I finally understand... on: August 26, 2011, 03:07:36 PM
Iso a pool that mines stupid forks when profitable and converts to btc

Coinotron does this (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=26727.0), but they are not really stable today and they don't convert to BTC automatically, you can do the conversion yourself through bitparking.
223  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is it still feasible to solo mine at 10gh/s? on: August 26, 2011, 02:59:46 PM
Go mine another chain that is far less difficult. SolidCoins are far more profitable right now than Bitcoins, and the difficulty is low enough (9,578) that it is still feasible for a solo miner. But if you insist on sticking to straight Bitcoins, I would advise a pool. I have 6.5 Ghash and I wouldn't even attempt to mine solo on Bitcoins anymore.

Just to add, low difficulty and high degree of interest (Solidcoin case right now) means blocks found every 50-100 seconds. Solo mining in such an environment can be really frustrating, because again the pools will eat (invalidate) your blocks for lunch, even if you find some. Unless you have a very good connectivity to the main nodes of the P2P network, you will be better off again to go with a pool. They are much faster to announce a block and claim it.

That's what I got with the verbose flag.

try --gpu-threads 1 (or -g 1) as an extra argument.

Looks like your card cannot start a second thread
225  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 26, 2011, 11:35:15 AM
New #solidcoin pool up at http://pool.squidnet.org ... automated payouts, only 1% fee, api access to account for stats, bring your G/hash!  I know you've seen the price going up.. Time to get some SC! Smiley

If you don't even care to give credits on the frontpage to the source of your pool's front-end, what does that suggest you will probably do with the mined coins?

You didn't even change the favicon, which is the icon of an established Bitcoin Pool.

I put that up in a hurry, function over beauty.  That is their stock template, which I did not pull any sort of "branding" off of.  Its how it came minus the minor changes in the php files to adjust for 32 coins per block, etc..   The entire front-end is being reworked to look good, and yes. Credit will be given in the decent template..  Hope that helps clear things up.  Huh

Appreciated. I have no affiliation with the origin, apart from mining there, just thought to promote some good practices, since we're all on open source. Good luck with your efforts!
226  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need some help with CGminer, please... on: August 26, 2011, 07:59:58 AM
Try adding the --verbose flag at the end of the command line and see what you get...
227  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Phoenix 1.6 hangs randomly on: August 26, 2011, 07:46:32 AM
Try CGminer (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0),

I found it to be much more stable with most pools.

If it displays the same behavior as you describe above, then it's a pool problem. Change your pool !!!

229  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 5870 1gb vs 2gb hash rate on: August 25, 2011, 04:05:51 PM
And you should get at least 430 MH/s from a 5870 !!!!

Clock: 925 MHz
Memory:319 MHz
VDD: 1.07 Volts

I put them at 970 MHz when I have the air-condition on, and they reach 447 MH/s
230  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Whats the best miner to choose? on: August 25, 2011, 03:59:53 PM
Currently CGminer gives equal performance in MH/s to Phoenix (latest versions for both), but a lot of extras:

  • One thread for multiple GPUs with a very nice overview and configuration interface
  • Automatic restarting of GPU threads
  • Better LongPoll/NewBlock detection (tried it recently with one of the new *Coins, with blocks coming in every few seconds)
  • Less than 0.1% stales, compared to 0.5% for Phoenix (at least with my miner/pool combination)

As for overclocking, atitweak is by far the simplest and most effective tool (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25750.0).

If you decide to give up the nice graphic environment, there are truly much better options.

Good luck!
231  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help trying to get 2 or more videos cards to work on: August 25, 2011, 03:48:35 PM
If you have a spare USB stick, you may try with Linuxcoin, if it doesn't work with that, then there certainly some problem with your hardware.

I've also tested mining on Windows, Ubuntu, CentOS and Linuxcoin was the best I found.

Very good fool-proof guide at http://www.linuxcoin.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Headless_Linuxcoin.
232  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Something does not seem right (mining) on: August 25, 2011, 03:42:42 PM
A good rule of thumb I've found is:

Divide your KH/s (NOT the MH/s) rate by the current difficulty and you will get roughly the amount of BTC you should be making per 24h at best, assuming that:

  • You are running the miners non-stop
  • You mine at one of the big 3 pools (Deepbit, Slush, or BTCGuild) where the variance is small. If you mine at a smaller pool, you might get lucky days and unlucky days.
  • Your pool is not pool-hopper-friendly. Else you may lose a 10-30% of your possible earnings. See the relevant discussion in the Mining category

So with your 1085 MH/s you should be making around 1,085,000/1,805,000~=0.6 BTC per day at best.

I don't know about you but I'm kinda glad when I buy food from a shop I don't need insider knowledge of the company and the stores policies to know it's safe to eat because of government health and safety regulations.

Well, if you had insider knowledge of the ways and means with which regulations are instituted and enforced, you would probably decide to grow your own...

And I am not talking moral-based decision, I'm talking safety-first decision.

And yes, I know, trusting the regulations and the authorities takes a lot less work and the probabilities look good. I am tempted and often give in myself. I am not pretending to be a self-sufficient wacko.

But, do we have something to do more valuable and more important than taking good care of our human complex? What could this thing be? Because if we do not do this first, how can we claim to care about anything else? How will we be able to help others? How can we offer something of value to humanity?

Hi, AnnihilaT

Switched over to your pool for testing yesterday, and am impressed by the stability and the low percent of rejections.

The Promo makes me feel much better as well  Smiley.

I decided to give up the stable PPS of Eligius, or the regular payouts of Slush/Deepbit for your more adventurous approach! By adventurous I mean getting knowledgeably lucky, even with 1 block per day average. It seems like you know very well what you are doing.

I am here to stay.

Thank you for your work.

And on the topic of suggestions, in my view, Eligius has some of the best statistics and graphs around (open source by Artefact2). You might want to consider it. Having said that, I feel that your current setup is good enough to keep me mining here.
235  Economy / Economics / Re: Monetary economics of merged mining, aux blockchains. (inflation by proxy?) on: August 19, 2011, 06:04:05 PM
I appreciate your answer and Yes, I can see it clearer now. Thanks for the links.

Also appreciate the metaphor from Virgil, which goes to show that people do not really change much of their nature through the ages.

I was wondering about the end results of this "merged mining" approach and came to the conclusion that it will probably kill the value of Namecoins, since there will be so much more supply relative to demand.

Namecoins got f***ed because of a simple price discrepancy for a few days. Some people made a few extra BTC (including myself) but very few seem to be really interested in having them for some real use (90% drop in mining capacity after last difficulty increase). Now the next difficulty adjustment will be in December. This incident shows that they don't really stand a chance as they are now, even if they start merged mining sometime soon.

I did consider that a Namecoin-based system might be very useful as a replacement for land and real estate registry in the distant future, but this is a far-fetched idea.
236  Other / Off-topic / Re: Eligius miners aware of prayers in block headers? on: August 19, 2011, 03:05:41 PM
Well, I've been mining on Eligius for the best PPS price around and never bothered about the founder's religious beliefs.

What Luke-Jr or anybody believes about other religions does not change my religious views, or others' for that sake. I'm free to think as I wish, he's free too. Anybody claiming that I am a heretic because I don't believe in [fill in your God's version] does not make me one.

<joking>

BTW, now I realize why I have a higher number of stales on Eligius with my Christian Orthodox GPU's. It's the "Filioque" addition to the Creed  that's making me waste a few more KH/s instead of calculating solutions. Maybe mining software developers should take this into account.

</joking>

<not joking>

WHOAAAH, my miners were just disconnected from Eligius as I was writing this !!!! Holy shit, this thing is giving me the creeps !!!

Connected again after 1 min.

</not joking>

Two words about shared mining I have for you:

"Trojan horse"

Well... and one picture:

Vladimir, since I value your opinion, can I ask you to explain what you mean? I know all about the story of the horse, and the modern use of phrase in computerspeak, but what are you saying behind that?
238  Economy / Economics / Re: It’s not illegal to use real strawberries, it’s just impossible if you don’t wan on: August 19, 2011, 02:24:50 PM

People are gullible (often *want* to be gullible) and without any regulations you'd be creating a whole field where such quacks *will* thrive.
For a good example of how gullible people are just look at the recent outbursts of creationism in the US.
These people are disputing 150 years of research, libraries full of books on the subject.
This is what people are, i'm afraid.

How about educating people to get to know at least the salient points of these admittedly extensive years of research?

Leaving out of course the "sponsored"/"results to order" research?

How about teaching our children the eagerness to want to find out what the hell is going on inside their body 24 hours a day?

Very true, we have nowadays so much available knowledge on how our system works, ready to use any time, and yet, we do not use it.

And, to be sure, I only spoke about myself, I am not speaking of others, and I am not suggesting that goat's milk is good for everyone  Wink Indicative stories and quotes about other cases, are just a quick note for me, nothing to take home, as I firstly care about what's applicable to myself.

Mobo, what you say about the majority is also true. Only if the regulations prove inadequate to protect us in the future, will the majority be FORCED to take care of themselves, each to their own, otherwise they will risk their survival.

But it's the same story all over the place. Such as, only if Greece goes bankrupt will we as a nation find a way to develop without getting in debt up to our eyeballs, because no one will lend to us then.

There is a pattern...
239  Economy / Economics / Re: It’s not illegal to use real strawberries, it’s just impossible if you don’t wan on: August 19, 2011, 06:24:04 AM
Do you think that the number of food-related regulations worldwide has actually served to decrease food-related diseases?

People get sick from regulated groceries and restaurants every day in every country of the world, whilst the number of regulations is increasing and, I think, will finally converge with the number of all people alive on earth.

I had some health troubles 10 years ago, and went through homeopathic treatment for months which solved all my problems. My takeaway was not simply the effectiveness of the treatment but a much more valuable thing which was:

Learning to monitor my health every day in relation to what I do, eat, secrete or think (yes, think!). Asking my natural detection systems to tell me what is going on with the system and if something is wrong. And let me tell you, I am getting answers.

Example: You may laugh at this, and feel free to be cynical about it, but I do watch every morning my feces in the toilet before flushing, and check that they are normal. If not, I will think of what I did eat yesterday or the day before that might have affected me. I will try changing my food habits and monitor the differences in the smell of urine or sweat.

The opening posts reaffirms for me what I already had found out: That we are becoming separated from our natural knowledge about our own health, and we tend to consider something safe by reading the label on the packaging (I still read the labels by the way, but I also know better than this).

Also, what about the fact that I have no problem drinking unprocessed milk from the goat of my neighbor (I would only boil it of course), but someone else who has never drunk anything but supermarket milk might get sick from it, because they might not have antibodies for everything contained. Should the regulation be (forcefully I would add) applied to me as well, although I don't have any problem with it? Or should there be more regulations that enforce people to do a blood analysis before they are allowed to buy and drink this milk? And then should I carry this paper with me whenever I want to drink this milk? ("Our goat milk is not served or sold to people without the necessary blood test credentials, which should be at most 6 months old, and signed by an authorized lab director")

Food regulation should be simple in a world where people actually care about their own health more than any government could ever care about them. This should solve the majority of the current problems. The rest can be left to laconic regulation.
240  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin-Central : trade EUR easily and for free ! on: August 18, 2011, 08:05:24 AM
I've seen this also on OTC market, and I think it should be fixed:

There's a user asking 75 EUR for 10 BTC currently. It is not clear if he is asking 75 for all the 10 BTC (reasonable) or 75 per BTC (unreasonable at current conditions). I would think that the user made a mistake most probably, since most orders are per BTC.

How about a field in the order book table to present the total amount of the order? This field is already there in the trade input form that you have.

In any case, congrats for opening an exchange closer to home  Smiley
