241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitinstant brokering extortion threats? on: September 08, 2012, 12:27:22 PM
I'm with Bitinstant on this one.
That's the spirit of Bitcoin - we are building a disruptive technology which will take over the world.
We aim at no less, so why be so shy about it?
Winners will write the history.
We can be disruptive without breaking any laws in the process....

I'm not familiar with US laws regarding that, but how is it illegal ?
I understand that blackmail and ransoming is, but I don't think paying is. Neither is facilitating payment.
Anyway the decision is on the one paying the ransom, it's not like Erik said that Romney should pay.

What about you both answer ?

+1.  Something smells rotten in Denmark...

That would be their cheese, don't worry about it.
(Sorry, I need to get to 100 posts in a hurry.  Tongue)

BTW, la bestiole, you French?

Yep I am French.
And BTW, nothing smells more than French cheese

Now back to the topic.

So much fail in this "Internet Economist" answer, it's just funny.
I more and more with Holliday here. I'm happily answering questions, but I stopped trying to convince people who use flawed logic.
In the end, they'll be proven wrong.

i should also add that when banksters get to borrow at 0% interest, they turn around and distort markets to a horrendous degree like we have today.  the entire world's economies are going into recession and yet they ramp stock and bond markets in the name of "price stability".  bullshit.  the only price stability they want is for their investments that they've gone all in with and are terrified to actually have marked to market by free markets.  nevermind the price of gold, silver, oil, foodstuffs; the things the rest of us need to survive.

(Emphasis mine)

Cypherdoc, are you getting bullish  Shocked

certainly the price action has been good but i just can't get myself to buy.  not b/c of the prices but b/c of this Bitcoin thing; it would work so much better as a reserve currency!

You know that I agree with that, but I'm afraid others will need a crazy long time to accept it, and that they will try to fight it.

1. Learn the pecking order. All opinions are not equal. Some people are to be respected. Learn who. Some people are irrelevant and easily ignored. Learn who.

The above snippet of the OP is very well said.

Talking about personal responsibility, do you have comments on that ? :

LOL  Grin
Organize an escrow with someone serious, and you have a bet Wink
247  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 07, 2012, 02:00:06 PM
<_matthew_> The fact that there were this many people willing to do a bet without escrow shows you how ignorant and greedy this community can get

Don't see why, they are not risking anything. Best case scenario, they win, worst case scenario, they make matthew look bad even worse. Sounds like a win-win  Grin

Anyway, it should be clear to everybody that Matthew won't pay. Everyone is free to qualify it as they like (good/bad trolling, scam, whatever)

Another explanation would be that this peak is only about Bitfloor, and that the peak about Romney is yet to come  Shocked

Can't wait to taste it (hope it's a good one)
250  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Entire World Just Found Out about Bitcoin! on: September 06, 2012, 10:20:21 PM

Yes but you would need big pooled account hidden as tor services or equivalent. If you do it with known pooled accounts, pretty sure SS will give them a visit quite fast.

Silk Road is pretty big and I don't think they will be visiting Silk Road because they can't find where it is physically located. Put the coins in Silk Road, pull them back out little by little. You will blend in with all the other small time drug dealers operating on there.

Agreed, that's the biggest pooled account operating as a tor service (that I know of).
Though to be correct, they theoretically could locate it, but they would need to control a big part of the tor network (please someone correct me if I'm wrong)
251  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Entire World Just Found Out about Bitcoin! on: September 06, 2012, 09:52:39 PM
"The currency is traceable, even if users go by pseudonyms, Garzik said. Every transaction is stored in a "block chain," which he compares to "a public ledger.""

I know Jeff knows better.

Why does Jeff keep saying this when Silk Road has proven that law enforcement cannot trace tumbled coins?  Huh

It would be insanely stupid to publicly say that ransoms paid in BTC could never be traced.  It's also technically untrue.  The BTC can be traced - they don't ever disappear from the blockchain.  It's tying them to real world transactions and identities which can be difficult.  Just as delivery creates a point of vulnerability in the SR system, exchanging large amounts of BTC for cash or stuff also creates a vulnerability in illicit BTC transactions.

If someone knows what they are doing, it would be near impossible to tie the coins to a person or physical location. First you tumble the coins through certain pooled accounts on Bitcoin based sites. Then, you sell the coins locally for cash, a small amount at a time. Granted, doing this with $1 million worth of coins is going to be a bit more challenging, but time would be be on the side of the 'hacker'. They could do it over weeks, months, years.

Yes but you would need big pooled account hidden as tor services or equivalent. If you do it with known pooled accounts, pretty sure SS will give them a visit quite fast.

Also on the CNN tv channel right now. They mention bitcoins a few times. They call it a digital internet currency.

It ain't over yet.  GPUMax is still running and people are still begging to be let into it.

You mean miners ? Or people buying untainted coins ?
I still don't get who would want to untaint coins at that price... (btw, someone could give me the average premium paid ? I heard around 20%)

To be honest, I'm sure all kinds of blackmail threats are made towards candidates every election year.  What's notable about this one - hoax or not - is that it became public.

From Reddit :

Quote
The reason it's a hoax, and not even an elaborate one at that, is that Page 1 makes zero sense.

First - you remember all those hedge fund income statements we saw? All that income flows to Line 17. It is essentially impossible that this is a flat $50,000. Whoever created this did it poorly. Line 12, Business Income, is for my consulting business, or my speaking engagements, or my flower store, or my interior design business.

Even more obvious is that Line 12 would almost without a doubt be subject to self-employment tax. That would be about 2.6 million dollars.

You see how line 28 has nothing on it? That should be 50% of the self-employment tax shown on page 2, which we don't see. So in short, the income is on the wrong line and even if it were right, there is no corresponding deduction for the self-employment tax.

The end.

Hoax or not, I also see this as positive.
Just think about how much people will ask themselves "WTF is bitcoin ? let's google that"

All the best to you.

Yep, this might be the biggest msm coverage outside of the financial news.
And we're already back above 11$  Grin

Kind of a weird idea to limit players to HU, even if I love HU, and understand the advantage to prevent collusion.
Where does the software comes from ? Is it an open source one ? (It looks like a copy of SealsWithClubs)

Will give it a try
