Any or all of those trying the same could succeed or simply be a step towards some else getting it right. Right now what is important is giving the devs the support and the opportunity they need, ensuring the community exists that each good idea gets a fair shot at reaching its potential.
Contrary to Mrrr above, I don't think it's a competition among those listed and we shouldn't be looking to put down any competition. It's these against the norm of traditional offerings. There's room for all these and more to go large.

hm...I guess in this case, they cannot enable 2fa, right?
You can duplicate instances of Google authenticator but I don't know whether Blockchain uses that as an option. Their mobile phone text would obviously be a problem too.

WRONG.
Writing in capitals doesn't make you more right! Your point is an obvious one; I was talking relative to what most people interested in Bitcoin want to see, which is the overall action and function of exchanges moving fiat into Bitcoin. We should want to see MtGox and any other thrive. That then in the spirit of wanting to see Bitcoin market cap expand to its full potential - an inwards flow. Naturally having an option for move back into fiat, is necessarily evil for new merchants and those of a nervous disposition.

How can you buy NEM at this point?
Not yet that I've seen, though there appear to be scamming sites who will take your money for alsorts.. ETH Ethereum on one today. There was a thread for registrations and a token donation that is a list then of those who will get a fraction when it is avaliable. = https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=440185.msg4835906#msg4835906I'm on p89 and will be more enthusiastic when I see my name in the sponsors google-doc.. I notice that registration 1st post has been updated to cross through detail but now suggests a typo and a different fee for p81-90 than it did when I paid (0.075 BTC where now suggests 0.75BTC) page 61-70 :fee=0.065 or 650 nxt page 71-80 :fee=0.07 or 700 nxt page 81-90 : fee=0.75btc or 750 nxtHopefully that will be fixed; I've pm'd utopianfuture but read also he doesn't reply to pm's.

I suspect we'll see fits and bursts of progress in this area. Certainly it'll be a while before the law has its head around the implications but industry could push the issue; especially in a tough economic environment, any edge will be impt - and the first to create a new edge will cut deeper too. All the law needs to do, is understand and acknowledge the idea that ownership is represented in a certain way and set a precedent. So, one use of smart property linked to big industry for example would be cars; if a car knows who its owner is, then the lock can acknowledge the owner; that needed be BTC obviously, that could be GM-Coin..

Wouldn't trust it, if it did exist. Which flavour of linux you using? I've not had problems on Mint, so expect all flavours Debian are stable. Can you not just download bitcoin-0.8.6-linux.tar.gz from https://bitcoin.org/bin/0.8.6/ extract from tar.gz and run the //bitcoin-0.8.6-linux/bin/32/bitcoin-qt ? Potentially it's drawing on certain installs that you might be missing. Install all these for everything that should be needed to compile from source on github: sudo apt-get -y install checkinstall subversion git git-core build-essential libssl-dev libdb++-dev libminiupnpc-dev libboost-dev libboost-system-dev libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-thread-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev libfreetype6-dev libfontconfig-dev libxrender-dev libsm-dev libglib2.0-dev libxext-dev libxext6-dbg x11proto-xext-dev

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: newbie-questions regarding blockchain, wallet and fees
|
on: February 17, 2014, 04:51:41 PM

The wallet will be at ~/.bitcoin/wallet.dat - copy that to back it up.. and copy it each time you make transactions as that wallet can spawn ~100 new addresses at random times invalidating previous wallets.
You can see a list of existing addresses and balance with bitcoind listallreceivedaddress 0 true
Try bitcoind getinfo if it shows connections and the blocks are not increasing then you're likely up to date.. or search online for the total current blocks in BTC.
Transaction fees go to miners for their including your payments in the new blocks they create. Currently a lot of miners will not insist on fees being paid but might well prefer people who do pay something nominal.

Look beyond currency.. that's just Bitcoin1.0.
Bitcoin2.0 is protocols that allow trade. Look at the whitepapers behind Master (MSC); Next (NXT); ProtoShares (PTS); Counterparty (XCP) and more recently New Economy Movement (NEM).
Then take a peek beyond those even to Ethereum, which offer Turing complete options and real complexity of action.
Any or all these could have real impact on the world's economy.

I expect in time there will become a clear and understood distinction between Bitcoin1.0[+Alternate cryptocurrencies] and Bitcoin2.0[Protocols]
Perhaps getting a Bitcoin2.0 or [Protocols] forum here under [Other], instead of having to shout amongst the clutter of copycoins, would be a good step forward. That would be then avaliable for the likes of Master (MSC); Next (NXT); ProtoShares (PTS); Counterparty (XCP) and of course NEM.
Having an official thread for development postings and pointers to other resources and core discussion threads here, would be a useful point of reference.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The implications of bitcoin price from laundering

Bitcoin is much more seizure-resistant than cash, so I can see the point of view where it might be attractive to drug lords. As soon as their younger minions brief them on this innovation. I guess they will need some time to get their heads around it but will eventually.
I'm not sure about that.. Bitcoin is not fully anonymous in the way cash is. Perhaps they might look to an alt that does offer that. Potentially they could launder through other coins but I expect dollars will be used by all flavours of criminals for a long while yet. Ban the dollar, I say!

Some people have no imagination for anything different than what they are already familiar with. Some people are scared of change of course too. Some old style activity should fear Bitcoin.
Also, a lot of people only consider Bitcoin as some form of currency or electronic gold but I suspect its real depth, will be in its ability to enable trade. Bitcoin2.0 MSC; PTS; XCP; NXT; NEM all very exciting.
Progress is Good.

Money laundering is serious crime in almost all countries. If criminals start using BTC for money laundering ia not a a good sign for common users. Countries will ban Bitcoin.
In the same way that they banned the US dollar?.. Bitcoin has far to much legal utility for Governments to ban it; especially in a time of economic downturn, they need every avenue to innovation they can find. Bitcoin is not simply currency, it's a new way to trade and as such will encourage economy. Those stupid enough to stiffle it will suffer relative to those who embrace it.

When GOX's prices and services are reasonably close in value to other exchanges why would you stay with them when peace of mind has been so lacking in the past?
Because getting validation is a pain and those who have it might hesitate going through that with another exchange when MtGox is sat there ready to action.
