In some other posts, some people tell that miners could be dangerous in closed rooms (because of VOC). Tell your son to ventilate his room  Smiley

VOC? whats voc?

ok, found it:

"The real issue are the chemicals released from the heated components - they give off toxic gases when heated - known as VOCs:

http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/indoorair/voc/"

i have been in the same room and sleeping with miners on same room for 1 month or so omg... is that dangerous then?? Of course window was always opened and it was ventilated every day but... you scare me now xD

Don't have a heart attack.  I think there would be a lot out there on the subject if running a few machines put off any amount worth worrying about.  I've been looking around and I can't find much on the topic.
62  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Keeping ASIC Miner(s) from Heating the Room? on: September 08, 2014, 03:08:42 PM
large asic units may not be safe to be close to you /your family over long periods of time , something to think about

can you provide any scientific research to support this?

ASIC miners, no matter how large are simply heat producers.   They aren't throwing out microwaves or any other sort of radiation beyond their thermal output

they will warm a room but if they will shut down long before they do so to the point where it would harm a human

The radiation is a minimal issue unless you sleep next to the miner.  Remember the intensity decreases with the square of the distance.

The real issue are the chemicals released from the heated components - they give off toxic gases when heated - known as VOCs:

http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/indoorair/voc/

This came up another thread.  Is there any credible evidence that any current hardware gives off a meaningful amount of VOCs?

I'd be interested to read up on VOC concerns.  I haven't come across anything on these.  Can you post a link to one or a couple?

has anyone thought about making a cloud server here? i for one, do not have much available space for the hardware, but would like to increase hashing, would it be possible, or even thought of?

You can find lots of places where you can have you stuff hosted or you can buy hashing power from a cloud hashing outfit.

Here's a link to a place that hosts mining equipment.

Here is a link about Cloud Hosting

I know of couple folks that get friends to host their equipment either at their homes or in their places of business as well.

I have 400GH running in my son's dorm room at college. He has recruited a friend to host another 400GH for me starting next week. I send him 30% of the BTC we earn each month to help pay his beer expense  Wink

Great use of my old S1's. I can even overclock them  Grin

EPIC !!!

Indeed!  This is spectacular!!!!!  Now I'm starting to think of who I know that is currently living on a campus.....

66  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmain Tech L1?? on: September 02, 2014, 08:38:56 PM

You need to power them with a external PSU, which some people may not consider "plug-n-play."  That said, the configuration is webbased and they are as straight forward as the come.

You may need to make a slight modification to your broadband router, but many people here are more than happy to assist!

Cheers.

Let me clarify.  I cannot mine using GPU's because it's too complicated code-wise.

So do these antminers come preloaded with some simple UI and mining software like you see on other rigs from BFL or Cointerra.  I hate to even mention BFL but they do have units which are plug and play.

Cheers!

Yes, they have a web-based configuration and monitoring system built into the machines.  Look for Dogie's threads on setup for more information.

Cheers.

Yeah, the S1's and S3's a really really easy to get up and running with very little tech knowledge.  It might take you a little "fiddling" time but if you've found the forums (which you clearly have) you can find every step broken down in wonderful detail.

For everyone else, it looks like this is an upgrade kit that essentially turns a S1 into a S3.

Thanks Doc.  The new changes are great.  I've never been in the top 50 but its nice to see how close I am.  No I'm tempted to add some more hash in only to see my name on the wall of fame.

Given how slow the past couple days have been I thought that I would be seeing less over those days (but obviously averaging out over time) but due to the pool-chaser migration I ended up with a bigger piece of each pie (block) and making more than I would have made in a stretch of good luck.  I guess staying put pays in a couple different ways. Can anyone tell me why BitMinter is such a small Bitcoin mining pool?  Aside from its size, everything else seems to be on par or better than the other pools I've mined with so I can't figure out why they aren't huge?
70  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1450 TH] BitMinter.com [1% PPLNS,Pays TxFees +MergedMining,Stratum,GBT,vardiff] on: August 15, 2014, 01:38:16 PM
Back to the christhegoth bet-spreading discussion...

Everyone realizes that switching over to other pools is only going to exacerbate the variance problem, right?  Honestly, the pigeon superstition is dangerous enough to sink a pool, especially one that's <1% of the network.  Nearly a quarter of the pool's hashrate has fallen off in the past couple of days...

You're totally right that one person spouting off random ideas of "bet spreading" and switching between pools based on recent challenges can be just enough to make less informed people jump ship.  It needs to stop.

At the end of the day, you're just as likely to be equally successful in any pool.  The payment amounts and frequency change but you'll end up with a comparable amount at the end of the day where ever you mine.  When you're choosing a pool you should be looking at the fees, available services and the ease with which you can run your gear on the pool.  As far as I'm concerned, Bitminter gives me the best of all 3.
71  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [OPEN] ASICMiner Tube Group Buy #1 on: August 15, 2014, 01:13:48 PM
I'll be interested to hear how these work out for those of you buying them.  I think the assembly part is kind of fun but I could use a little more information about what needs to be wired.  The youtube video seemed to do a good job of the larger pieces but for me the intricate stuff is always the most intimidating.

Has any talked overclocking capability?
72  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1450 TH] BitMinter.com [1% PPLNS,Pays TxFees +MergedMining,Stratum,GBT,vardiff] on: August 14, 2014, 08:01:02 PM
Its nice to see the Hero and Legendary members jumping back in to the conversation.  We really need to make sure everyone gets this whole luck and randomness thing (i.e. nothing that has happened in the past has any relevance to the future).

Its been really disappointing to see the hash rate dropping during this tough time.  I understand that some people really can't keep the lights on with these low moments but if your bankroll is stable enough there's no reason to jump around.
73  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmaintech Antminer S1 Upgrade Kit on: August 14, 2014, 07:22:31 PM
I have a couple S1's and I'd be interested to hear from anyone who does this upgrade.  Interesting for sure.

Yeah, Hear, Hear for the faithful.  I'm adding on another 1.5 TH/s as soon as they arrive.

At least our really heavy hitters are hanging with us.  Thanks guys!

I think christhegoth needs to stop posting.  Not only are most of your posts ridiculous and lacking in both common sense and general knowledge but you post like you're a fountain of knowledge.  Which you are not.  You are posting with enough confidence that you are confusing the less experienced.  Please stop.  Bottom line...  Feel free to ask questions -  you should, but stop trying to provide answers - you shouldn't.

To Everyone Else,
The Bitminter forum is a great place to learn a thing or two and the Doc, along with a lot of the folks on the forum, are an unbelievable resource. For your own sake, don't listen to christhegoth.  He probably knows less than you.

Every time that I check the Live Stats and this block is still going I cry a little inside.  Fingers crossed that we crack it soon and see some green numbers in the latest blocks column immediately after!!!!!!

Separate topic.... can anyone provide some advice for setting up a mining business in the US?  Since I'm paying all of this money in electricity and equipment it would make sense to form a business and claim the power costs and hardware purchases as business expenses.  My setup isn't huge - only 1.5 TH/s once my new S3's arrive - so we're not talking a ton of money.  Any advice of thoughts would be much appreciated.

We really need to grow.   What is your plan to spur pool growth?

Do we really need to grow outside of keeping up with the percentage increase in difficulty?  I don't mind fewer blocks with larger payouts.  As long as we see a block every day or two, the smaller pool is fine with me.  I'm sure Doc would like to see if grow though since the bigger the pool, the more fees he collects.

2% of network would be fine.   But 1% is kind of tight.  Generally, it is where you stop solo mining.

very difficult to encourage growth in this pool.

Doc is pretty honest pool op but the game has change a lot.

in house 4 or 5th is a home miner top end.  maybe 10th. for some of us.

In the winter I could run 20 s-3's  but that means A little more then I want in house.

So I have gear hosted. I can't handle variance too much stress.  So I use bigger pools

It is easy to use a 5% pool  say 10 blocks a day.  but a 1 percent pool 2 blocks a day .  is a bit harder to do. 3 bad days in a row can mean a lot for some of us.

Are paying hosting fees, etc... daily?  Taken over a month or even a couple weeks your payout works our to about the same as any other pool.  The whole process is a little less fun when we have to wait a day or more for good news.  I miss the days of seeing multiple blocks per day but such is life.  If you need the money out of your mining Daily I guess a smaller pool could pose some problems.  Otherwise, I don't see the drawback.  Is there some other drawback that I'm not seeing?

so what do you all do with your old usb miners, (the obsolete ones)?
or dont they become obsolete>?

Most people sell them on Ebay or elsewhere just before they become completely obsolete.  I have also hear of a couple guys using them to solo mine.  In general, your odds of every hitting a block solo mining with old or older hardware is really really slim but maybe, just maybe, you might find a block that doesn't take a huge amount of work.  For guys that do this, its kind of like playing the lottery and hoping to hit it big, but knowing that they likely never will.

hi all, just started this week, currently running no extra mining gear, just cpu/gpu, currently at 0.1 gh, ive purchased some mining usb, so hope to increase very soon

W3rd. USB is fun but is VERY low earning unless you can bring in about 100 GH/s in my opinion. What toys have you bought?

I ask as I'll never break even on my first USB venture, so you do need to be careful here.

2 Drillbit Thumb (Avalon Gen 2) USB Bitcoin miners AU$40 in total

Osober,
Welcome to the game. You're lucky to have found Bitminter, the DOC is a superb resource for any questions that you have as are the other members of this forum.  I got into mining a couple months back with some USB ASICS and they were a great place to start.   They won't make you a lot of money but they will let you get your feet wet and see how everything works.  If you eventually decide to move upstream into more advanced hardware be sure to see what people are saying about them on the forums.  Some equipment seems like it will be awesome but doesn't pan out in the end.  The folks on these forums can provide a lot of good advice when it comes to purchases.

I was really worried that I wouldn't but I received my S3 from this website yesterday and got it up and mining last night.  So I guess it wasn't a scam.  Note:  If you paid via Paypal and you have a different experience watch their 45 day limit on disputes.
