Not the guy I want to be facing in the cup, but I suppose it will be a worthy battle if I pass -- bad luck to you, Hhampuz! I'm going to answer tomorrow, or much later this evening. Not in the best of health and feeling like I need a bit of focus to make myself useful.

Also pertinent is that I'm in relegation zone with the two below me having a game in hand. Not a great place to be with only 5 games to go...

Damn buwaytress, I didn't notice you dropped so much. But you know, maybe I just lost sight of you over time, need my glasses I guess! Cheesy But I noticed that you are really in a bad spot as the three guys above you also have a game in hand (in case you missed that...man, I see you striking back once it hits me) Tongue

Jokes aside, the game in hand looks nice, but things are still close. The top of the table is crazy close from 1. - 9. Anything can happen I guess. But that's how it should be, having a great thriller until the end.

5  Economy / Economics / Re: The collapse of central banks...Inevitable? on: May 12, 2024, 10:24:01 PM

The world often behaves in strange and mysterious ways. Even though the global economy is collapsing, central banks aren't showing signs of fragility. They will remain in power as long as governments support them. And people can't do anything about it.

Bitcoin was once thought to be Fiat's replacement. But so far, it has failed. Especially when many consider it to be a store of value than a currency. Using BTC on top of Fiat is only a pipe dream. At least, we have a choice. As long as BTC remains decentralized, there should be nothing to worry about. Who knows what measures central banks will take to protect the economy in the future?  Undecided

Was it? I did a quick check and couldn't find the word "replace" in the Nakamoto white paper. I bring this up because I think this is one of these catchphrases that some people (or many) quickly fell for and propagated it themselves. If you asked some people what they know about Bitcoin, this is probably one of the most provided answers while they couldn't explain the technology in any further detail let alone provide the core principles that Bitcoin is based on.

If anything, Bitcoin drove the price up for the legacy system to remain shitty. Remember how long it took for fiat transactions to be settled between banks? No need to discuss intercontinental transfers... Only after Bitcoin emerged, they began introducing 24h guaranteed settlements, then upgraded to instant settlements within the same currency unions.

Now they are embracing Bitcoin because the risk is high to not do it. One bank did the first step, others followed. First they didn't want to be the fool who has been the first, now they don't want to be the fool who missed the boat completely.

A lot of things are happening and this idea that Bitcoin will replace all cash in the world is nonsense to begin with. Bitcoin can become a decentralized geopolitical financial tool in a very complex world and countries might be competing for domination of this geopolitical financial tool. But they also want a tool where they can plan or with some certainty anticipate the effects of their financial political actions. Giving up national fiat currency means that the player either probably has sufficient power over Bitcoin, but that would imply other countries wouldn't be well advised to give up theirs.

It is hard to imagine that Bitcoin will be so uncontestedly powerful as a financial system that countries start rushing one after another into it, abandoning their currencies and make Bitcoin the one and only currency.

But it's an interesting idea to think about and it is not like I would say no per se because I don't know. But saying that "Bitcoin was once thought to be Fiat's replacement" is something that some people might have thought without understanding Bitcoin, and I doubt that it was the opinion of the majority of Bitcoiners, and I doubt that Satoshi thought he is about to kill Fiat once and forever. But he saw the need for an alternative system that can exist outside of the Fiat realm.
6  Economy / Speculation / Re: When is next significant correction coming? on: May 12, 2024, 10:05:04 PM
Whatever the goal of OP is with opening this thread, but if we take it seriously for a second, everyone can guess what a significant correction is for a "newcomer" and what a significant correction means for the guys here who have been around for a decade. Going down from 73k USD to 58k USD isn't frightening those who are from the old days. Back then I was shocked when Bitcoin went 20% down and I thought this could be the end when there were crashes of 70% or so. If OP doesn't say what proportions are being referred to as "significant correction", then nobody can even give an idea really.
7  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Season on: May 12, 2024, 09:10:40 PM
I saw a very interesting statistic in the newspaper today. They have played 51 official matches this season and have only suffered 2 defeats. Borussia Dortmund have achieved a very important success so far. But I don't think they will have a chance against Real Madrid in the final. I agree with you. Because Real Madrid have players who can change the score at any moment. On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund have looked like a team that tries to score from corners or free-kicks with set-pieces. I think Real Madrid are the clear favorites in this match.

No one can deny the fact that Real Madrid are the favourites to win the champions league competition and Dortmund can only try but cannot prevail over them in this match. But it is what football holds for us and what we have witnessed in the past before that is making one to have some doubts in this match. The reality of it is that, Real Madrid will win the finals and if Dortmund gets to win the match, it’ll only be by luck and not by their physical strength and ability as a team. Dortmund can play all they can in that match but Real Madrid will still remain the favourite for the champions league title.

No one can deny the fact that PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle were the favorites in the group stage. Nobody can deny the fact that Atletico Madrid was the favorite in the quarterfinal. Nobody can deny the fact that PSG was the favorite in the semifinal. Nobody can deny the fact that Real Madrid is the favorite in the final Wink Hm  Cool

Although I doubt it is gonna happen, a win for Austria against Switzerland would save me the draw I think. When I first checked the odds a few hours ago, I thought what an idiot I was to not do some more research as Austria was at 9.0 I think. But they are still above 3.0 despite the lead they have now. But let's see, wonders may happen! Wink

Quelle: Google, Dortmund, Mainz 05

Cheesy

He won the DFB Pokal twice and he now has a chance to win the Champions League. It doesn't sound as if he had won nothing plus the huge chance to win the maximum a club player can win. So a little bit too early for your feelings I guess. But I doubt that Reus will play a big role in the final as he hasn't been delivering that much for a long time now. He still has ok stats, but others took over. He could indeed have more titles to his name if he played for another club.

Actually Reus does not have many brilliant achievements with Dortmund so far, throughout his career that has been spent with Dortmund and only getting 2 DFB Pokal is not an achievement to be proud of in my opinion, but Reus loyalty to Dortmund is certainly an extraordinary thing, when a player continues to choose to stay at a club even though the club is not able to compete in the championship of course we cannot ask how much loyalty In his possession, Reus continues to stay with Dortmund even though many big teams continue to want to sign him and this season will be Reus' last season at Dortmund so maybe the Champions League trophy will be a beautiful farewell gift later.

I know that many of you here might disagree with me, but there is more to a career than titles. As a club player, well ok you got a point there. But if a player decides to be loyal and play for a club almost the whole career and was a brilliant player, how is that not a great achievement? He scored 118 goals in 291 games, I think that is something to be proud of.

It's similar when people talk about Harland and how he will not win a World Cup or Euro. Of course not, but is he to blame that he is Norwegian? Was it bad that Reus was loyal to Dortmund? That alone could be something a player can be proud of. Putting on top the fact that Bayern was such a dominant team for over a decade, it is still an achievement to win the DFB Pokal. Winning the Bundesliga was obviously close to impossible.
11  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Germany League - Bundesliga Prediction Thread on: May 12, 2024, 06:07:15 PM
The three quick goals pulled the plug pretty quickly though. There was no coming back for Dortmund and Mainz knew that if they concentrate on their defense, they got the 3 points they need. This game was worth a bet in my eyes, but I didn't place one. Wink
Mainz were determined to win after realizing how lose Dortmund was in the game, they gave no room for exploit for Dortmund attackers and the got the result they wanted. I like how Mainz took advantage in the early minutes of the game that got them 3 goals and they stood their ground not to throw the lead away till the end of the match now they have moved passed the relegation zone.

Mainz played a great game, had an unusual conversion rate of their chances and scored all those goals so early on that Dortmund gave it up. Everyone knows what it takes to come back into a game when a team is 3 goals down and I think that was the moment when the players decided that it is not the day to prove to the world how strong they mentally are. They would have had to give everything they had, but knowing that a Champions League final is waiting, I doubt that a player would be willing to go 110%. But that's what's needed to get back into the game.

There was a lot of uproar after the game. Maybe it's the right thing to do by the commentators, but everyone who said they don't understand what's going on, is a blatant lier.
12  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ Football Transfers Speculation, Odds and Predictions on: May 12, 2024, 05:56:56 PM
Seems like it is time for Reus to leave Dortmund and sign a last juicy contract in one of the leagues that are on the list for pro players who are about to just have a good time. There are rumors that Reus might join forces with Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia or he could go to the MLS.

I don't know how reliable this website is, but I read it a couple of times and they say a few things about it here.

My comment on that is that I never was of the impression that Reus is the kind of guy who'd go to Saudi Arabia, but money might make him do a 180. I remember him saying how important proximity to his family is and that is why he wants to remain a Dortmund player forever. Well, maybe he brings his entire family to Saudi Arabia and if they are still alive, grandparents included. Or maybe he was talking the same stuff like almost every other player out there until someone passes by with a big bag loaded with money. Wink
It feels gutted for Reus to end his career without winning a big trophy in his career while being a very impressive talented player. His love for Dortmund as his boyhood club has prevented him to move to a big club for his career achievements. His injuries record is also so bad that has hindered him to develop his peak potentials to be one of great players in football.

I have doubt that he will move to Saudi remembering he is not a type of player that put money as consideration when he has to make a decision. in the past, many big club tried to sign him, but he remained loyal to Dortmund as a club where he started his football journey. Being a family man could also be a reason for him to not go to unfamiliar place like Saudi. He is very loved at Dortmund by the fans and young players, that's why I don't see any chance of him moving to Saudi.

13  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Germany League - Bundesliga Prediction Thread on: May 11, 2024, 11:45:21 PM
I confess that I am very surprised by Mainz's victory, they managed to score 3 goals, it seemed like Dortmund because they know that Mainz is in a poor position in the table and as Dortmund no longer have a chance of winning the Bundesliga but they have already secured a place for European Champions League and are in the final of the European Champions League, so they preferred not to try too hard in this game and with that they allowed Mainz to win the game and with this victory Mainz has a chance of getting out of the relegation zone since who manage to win in the next game, which will be the last game of the Bundesliga

Mainz's next opponent will be Wolfsburg, who have won in the last 3 games and are in a position that guarantees them to be in the Bundesliga next season, which is why I don't see many reasons for Wolfsburg to make an effort in the game against Mainz. Will Mainz be lucky to win in the next game and not be relegated?

But was it that much of a surprise when you give it a second thought? Terzic kept some of his best players on the bench and none of the other players would risk an injury, while Mainz played one of the most important games this season. That doesn't mean when a season is literally over that top teams should start losing or play subpar, but it is quite understandable when you look at the specific situations both teams are in.

The three quick goals pulled the plug pretty quickly though. There was no coming back for Dortmund and Mainz knew that if they concentrate on their defense, they got the 3 points they need. This game was worth a bet in my eyes, but I didn't place one. Wink
14  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2023/24 on: May 11, 2024, 10:55:13 PM
It's like practice but it seems that Madrid was too strong for Granada in this match.
There were only Modric, Rudiger and Camavinga who sometimes started in today's match while the rest were the substitutes and young players like Fran Garcia and Arda Guller who were given more matches to make them mentally trained but the results were really very good in this match.

The 4 goals without reply gave them more confidence in the game and that's because Madrid are very comfortable and Ancelotti is a genius in that he knows what to do and what formation to adopt when the players on the pitch are not in their core line-up.
I'd also like to commend Fran Garcia and Arda on today's game where they didn't waste the opportunities Ancelotti gave them.
TBH i didn't expect such a big result in this match because I still believe Madrid will win but I don't think they will win by this much in a match where their players are playing.

However, Madrid's performance was really good and I'm very happy to see their performance like today because I think this is something worthy of a big club like Madrid.
They're still serious even though they've already secured the trophy.

In addition i agree with what you said where in today match Ancelotti knows what he has to do and giving opportunities to some young players is a worthy thing. Now with the 3 points they managed to get Madrid does not seem to want to be close to the runner-up in terms of points and it is certain for now Granada and Almeria can not get out of the relegation zone. It's just a matter of waiting for Cadiz now because even though the difference with Rayo is already visible, Cadiz still can't be confirmed as a relegated club this season.

But they did play much better than Granada and it was a duel between two teams that have achieved their goals or couldn't achieve anything anymore. I don't think you can still play your best when you know that you are going down a league. And when you see the line-up of Real Madrid, of course there are players who don't play that often, but it is still a team full of great names. Granada had a single shot target and if a team understands to play some nice football against inferior teams, then it is Real Madrid. If anything was still at stake, then Granada would have been more passionate about their last encounter with Real Madrid until they may get promoted again in the future.

Bye bye Dominic Thiem: he announced that this ATP tour 2024 will be the last of his career. He is 30 years old now and well, he earned around $30 million in prize money and he feels it is the right decision.

He has played some amazing games I think, but his trend was pretty much only negative in the last few years. Unbelievable that his last win on the ATP tour was this amazing match against Zverev in the US Open final. Best ranking ever was 3rd and he can say he won a Grand Slam. Sounds like a successful career to me. Can't compare everyone to Djokovic, Nadal and Federer.

I think its the right decision for Dominic. The game has moved on, the younger players
sre hard to beat and older players find it difficult to get far in tournaments after coming
back from injuries. Its best I think to retire on a positive vibe i.e whole still playing, similar
to what Rafa is doing, last week he bade the Madrid tournament farewell as it was his last.

I fully agree and he was talking about a wrist injury as far as I remember and that he has plans already for the future. There is no point in wrecking your body and then throw the towel when it is too late. I wanted to say that I didn't understand Murray but I do understand him, because if you are a professional sports man and dedicated your whole life to it because you loved it, it's to stay "I am going to stop here". But Murray, a successful player and multimillionaire who has many years to go in life, gets all these surgeries and still wants to go. He has a hip implant and I think no matter how hard you try, but tennis such a taxing sport. How in the world would he compete with the Sinner and Alcaraz guys?

That's why I think Thiem got the timing right. Still fresh, rich and has plans.

Murray is an anomaly, he like Thiem is rich, has his own clothing business, he doesnt
need to be playing and wont be beating any top 10 players.

Gasquet is another player in the same scenario, he should also retire after this season
and Fils also is approaching that time although his performances are still decent.

Yes but this is purely talking about age. If we talk about age, Federer should have stopped earlier, Nadal should have stopped earlier. I think there are special circumstances that require individual approaches. Federer was competing for more GS titles and won titles at the age of 37 and 38. He also had a certain responsibility towards the sport as a whole and he understood that. Nadal is the same.

Murray has a different story. He has done a lot for the sport and he is a GS winner, there are no unfulfilled dreams. And he is rich of course. Running around with a hip implant, I am not sure that is the right decision when in fact he reached his last semifinal in a GS in 2017. Look at Wikipedia what this guy is doing. He keeps going and could not get past the 3rd round in a GS for 7 years now. I find that weird. I can't imagine he is playing without pain.

Djokovic might be getting back in shape. Nadal got destroyed, but he is going there and at least doing it for the fans. He wants to win, but I think he is realizing that it is ok his time has come, but he didn't want to say goodbye in an Instagram post. Good decision.

Oh shit! Mainz really ruined me in this round. I never thought that they can win against Dortmund, but mitchr4 did and now he equalized our score. I hope that Oklahoma and Boston can win 4 games because currently I have worse score in the ice hockey question. Maybe I should have listen to Trofo and not check the score until the end. But I can't... It's too exciting for me to just let it go Grin

Yes and in the German Bundesliga pool I was the only one who went with Mainz and in the English version it was a hand full of guys who went with Mainz. But guess what I was a coward in BSFL and picked Dortmund and in retrospect that decision does at least surprise me because it was so obvious that there was tons on the line for Mainz and nothing at all for Dortmund. No Dortmund fan cares now that they lost this game. There is nothing to play as everyone is looking forward to the CL final anyway. What a stupid choice I made...

@Strongkored, you are very close to giving me the second loss of the season. Only the hockey question can help me to tie it, but you have to be very unlucky now in order for that to happen.

So.
