1  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / The “Auditability” of QR Code Signature Outputs on: December 16, 2019, 05:47:49 AM
People purchase hardware wallets because they know the most secure way to store their private keys is to take them offline into cold storage. All hardware wallet services need a means of communicating between offline storage and online terminals. While the cold end (offline storage) is responsible for storing private keys and signing transactions, a hot end (online terminals) is needed to obtain data from the blockchain, construct transactions for the cold storage end to sign, and broadcast signed transactions to the blockchain.

In transmitting signature outputs, the majority of cold storage hardware uses data cables, Bluetooth, or even NFC. Because of the opacity of their data transmission, these methods make signature outputs extremely difficult to audit. An overlooked means of cold storage hardware communication is the QR code, a “what you see is what you get” solution. The QR code is the ideal means of data transmission between cold ends and hot ends because data output by QR codes is transparent. This enables users to easily ensure each unsigned transaction that is transmitted to the cold storage device is valid, as well as ensure signature outputs from the cold end do not reveal private keys or sensitive information in any way.

How many hardware wallets use QR codes to make transactions?
2  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Should hardware wallets use secure elements for max security? on: December 12, 2019, 02:43:02 AM
I don't understand what is the op so worried about.
If you lose your device and for some reason a hacker finds it, he will not be able to steal your funds, unless if it is a zero day exploit (which nobody knows any for now).
If someone try your pin 3 times  device will reset.

The maximum security for now for your bitcoins is a ledger nano or a trezor.
Without a secure element, the hardware wallet cab be easily hacked with side channel attack. Check this: https://thenextweb.com/hardfork/2019/12/10/cryptocurrency-shapeshift-keepkey-wallet-cold-hacker-voltage-attack/
3  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Dust Attack, what it is, why it is dangerous and how to prevent falling to it on: December 11, 2019, 06:05:43 AM
this bold part is misleading because nobody can "trace your identity" this way, specially not by using blockchain analysis alone. all they can do is linking the different addresses if they weren't linked before only when the user consolidates the inputs in one transaction. and an address is not revealing the identity of the user on its own.

Bitcoin it is not an anonymous protocol, but a pseudonymous. If an exchange gives you a few satoshi and you consolidate those with your bitcoin stash, they are perfectly able to link your KYC'd addresses to the pseudonymous one. Same thing if they send dust to an empty address and if you send to a KYC'd address (or an address "touched" with a KYC'd one). This is what the sentence ion bold meant.

exactly my point.
they can not identify you by only using "dust attack" technique that you explained here. for example someone can have 2 addresses both not-linked to his identity. first one that is empty receives dust then he links it to the second one, there still is no way of linking these two to his identity. similarly the another person may have 2 addresses both linked to his identity, the empty one receives dust and he links it to the other one. no additional privacy was lost here.
If someone wanted to identify you, I doubt if they would send dust to an empty address. Since everything is on the blockchain, they would send dust to addresses that have a fairly decent amount of crypto. If that address gets linked to another address that is linked to a person's identity, then they now know the person behind it. But then again, if you're really not bothered about privacy as such, a dust attack wouldn't affect you.
4  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ever Wondered What Your Hardware Wallet Inputs and Outputs? on: December 11, 2019, 04:06:20 AM
I'm a fan of Cobo products, very focused on security. Picked up the Cobo Tablet during their Black Friday sale and am impressed! So affordable at 39 bucks, and solid build quality.
5  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Cobo Tablet_Finally a recovery seed backup solution that's worth the $$$ on: December 11, 2019, 03:56:01 AM
It is the first time that I like something from Cobo. The design looks modern but the level of safety is physical hazards, right? For example, there is no private key to open the Cobo Tablet. only screw Driver.

If some colors are added, some tricks in the opening "You can open the wallet by clicking on several sides/points that are modified manually or even just a small key with the impossibility of breaking.
If you add the above features, I think $ 39 will be fair.
This is a metal tablet to store recovery seeds, so there's no need for a private key. And it's fire-proof, can handle temperatures wayyy above house fires.

Nice  Grin
I always wanted to buy trezor's cryptosteel (which is basically the same as this sollution), but the €130 pricetag always helt me back (i mean, 130 euro's for a piece of steel)... Seriously considering this one now
You should check it out. I would recommend it any day over the others.

If you make multiple copies, it just increases the chances of others finding your recovery seed.

If you can't store a paper or this steel in a place where no one will find, then this will not give you any security.

Ofc steel is better than paper, however a paper can easily last 20 years, as I have seen already
True that, you have to store it in a place nobody can find it. Even better to split the seed and store it. Good for you that paper lasts that long. To each his own, it's steel for me. Cool
6  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: ASICVAULT: The Most Secure Cryptocurrency Hardware Wallet on: December 09, 2019, 07:11:48 AM
There is a new very secure hardware wallet launching   -  surpassing Trezor and Leger, as producers claim.  They say it provides 1000 times(!) better security than any other hardware wallet/

For me it look very nice, especially in aluminium-titanium case, and I would like to buy it (though it is rather expensive - around 200 Euro) :

Short description from the website:        AsicVault is a next generation storage device specifically designed for cryptocurrencies. Developed by a company in Estonia, it provides the best security features. Aside from providing cutting edge cryptocurrency software wallet security, this device is fabricated to provide the best physical security as well.

AsicVault’s custom chip equipped with “crypto accelerators” provides 1000 times better security than any other hardware wallet. Its custom chip is composed of two physically isolated RISC-V processors. The device uses all round “anti-tampering technologies” to make it physically secure. This feature essentially makes this device more of a vault than a hardware wallet.

With no batteries, this device uses Supercapacitor technology for energy. Moreover, a number of embedded self-destruct modes enhance its security reliability. AsicVault also provides complete encryption for your computer hard drives. All the encryption algorithms are run on the device thus never exposing keys to your computers. The device controls can easily be accessed through a user friendly interface. A touch screen display on top of the device provides a smooth user experience.

Web-site:   https://asicvault.io/

Here is video from exhibition:  https://video.buffer.com/v/5a2576f7936392fc145eaaab

------------------------------

For me is unclear why there is not really much information about this device in independent media.   If this device is 1000 times more secure than other devices, why media does not cover it?    There are some articles on the net which seems to be promoted, though.

Can it happen that producer will be able to maybe steal money from it, remotely ?

What do you think about it?

This one apparently is a scam! Sad because it looks so good. Please read this article that points out a lot of flaws in this hardware wallet: https://medium.com/@caffeine93/asicvault-asicfuel-ico-new-upgrade-to-an-old-scam-46e47478177b
7  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Cobo Tablet_Finally a recovery seed backup solution that's worth the $$$ on: December 09, 2019, 06:05:02 AM

This backup solution is only $39! https://shop.cobo.com/products/cobo-tablet

Excellent quality, easy assembly. It can be used with any software or hardware wallet that supports BIP39. If you're using paper to store your recovery seeds, it might be a good idea to shift to this one. It's definitely worth it.

Pictures and more information here: https://medium.com/cobo-vault/the-cobo-tablet-is-now-fireproof-37f39350e045

To be fair, anyone having their seed written on paper should be using something like this (or similar) since it would be more secure. However, is it as reliable as cryptosteel or other similar products? I guess I should look around to see if anyone have tested their durability.
I have one and it's an absolute winner, so much cheaper than cryptosteel or other products. They have some really good reviews on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cobo-Tablet-Storage-Compatible-Supports/dp/B07RZW8CWY
8  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Should Hardware Wallets Be Open Source? on: December 09, 2019, 06:02:06 AM
Ledger is not completely open source. Trezor is.

You are right.
Every software should be open source, as it is much safer.
However trezor has vulnerabilities which ledger doesn't like this one

So everyone with a trezor device should use a strong passphrase to protect yourself against this vulnerability
https://cryptobit.media/en/news/other/1789/

Yea, but this is a physical attack and still need the right tools and skills to take advantage of it, so the likelihood of such an attack being taken place is close to 0, though if someone has access to the device, knowledgeable and know it would be worth it (and assuming that there isnt additional security measures in place), they could do it. I do agree that people should be using a additional passphrase with their hw wallet (or any wallet in that matter).

However, with ledger, with it being close source, we dont know of any vulnerabilities that may not be fixable (I suspect that their ledger blue has an security bug that cannot be fixed, though it could just be that they know that was really a failure product). Furthermore, with them relying on a third party security chip (secure element), that raises alot more question about how reliable such a third party may be, if there are unknown backdoors, etc.
It's not close to 0. Trezor has already been a victim of counterfeiting: https://cointelegraph.com/news/trezor-one-wallets-forgery-reveals-new-techniques-used-to-steal-crypto. I'm a strong advocate of open source, but in this case maybe it's not such a good idea to have everything out in the open, that even hackers can access.

I think essentially most countries that are currently against crypto will go that route.
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin addresses hits an all time high! on: December 09, 2019, 05:25:45 AM
In was recently reported that the number of unique Bitcoin addresses holding an excess of 0 bitcoins i.e more than zero bitcoin in them just got to an all time high
Quote
Bitcoin recently hit a new milestone and an all-time high for its addresses. It currently has more addresses with BTC in it than at any other time in its history...
Quote
...Bitcoin now boasts some 28.39M addresses with more than 0 BTC in them. This tops the previous all-time high seen in January 2018 when the network hit 28.384M active addresses. The story was first reported by analyst Alex Thorn (@intangiblecoins)...
Full article: https://beincrypto.com/bitcoin-addresses-hit-a-new-all-time-high/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

This shows an evident increase in the adoption of Bitcoin all over the world, although unique addresses does not necessarily translate to unique users of the network, it shows the growth of the network.
Is this evidence of Bitcoin going mainstream?
Would an ATH in addresses lead to a new ATH in the price?
This is probably because people are using a different address for every transaction, which is a smart thing to do.
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi should be in Time's influnetial person of the decade list on: December 09, 2019, 05:05:32 AM
As we know this new year, a decade would have passed. And this time the Time magazine will be taking out most influential person of this decade list. I was thinking, we should start a petition and as Time include Satoashi's name. He was the one who started the financial revolution.

Thoughts on how we can make it happen?
Through mainstream adoption of Bitcoin. If that can happen, Satoshi might very well be the most influential person of the millennium, maybe.
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: People are underutilizing Bitcoin on: December 09, 2019, 05:02:45 AM
Full article: https://www.forrestvisions.com/blog/people-are-underutilizing-bitcoin

People need to start accepting Bitcoin and keeping it, not converting it.

If you think of Bitcoin as just a virtual placeholder for fiat currency, stable coins will be the future and Bitcoin will slowly fade away.

Thoughts?
I'm all for HODLing Bitcoin because I don't think that it's going to fade away. And I don't believe it will replace fiat or is a virtual placeholder for fiat, instead I think sometime down the line it will be another form of accepted payment along with fiat.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin mixers be considered illegal by worldwide governments? on: December 09, 2019, 04:45:59 AM
I can see centralized mixers being subjected to some kind of KYC regulations. There have been instances of mixers being used to obfuscate the trail of stolen coins, but such instances are very few, Chainalysis has some data on that: https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/chainalysis-most-mixed-bitcoin-not-used-for-illicit-purposes.

Regarding decentralized mixers, Wasabi and Samurai wallets have something along those lines - this article might help shed some light on it - https://medium.com/cobo-vault/bitcoin-mixing-a-brief-research-into-centralized-vs-decentralized-390ea83fa6ad
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the fate of Scammers if bitcoin later becomes a traceable Currency. on: December 09, 2019, 04:26:05 AM
Bitcoin is not anonymous, in fact every transaction that you make can be traced on the blockchain, so it's already traceable. The only thing here is, while they can trace the transaction to the address, tracing the address to the individual might require some sort of authority. Exchanges now have KYC in place, so if government entities want to trace a suspicious address to the individual, they can actually do so.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The importance of bitcoins :) on: December 08, 2019, 11:52:28 AM
Time and again I hear people saying how it would be okay if they have the access to only*traditional money* but one should understand that time has changed and so have we , according to me Bitcoins now a days is indespensible, it's a part of society now , it's a new culture.

Speaking from my personal opinion I just wanted to hear what you guys think about it , why do you think it is so important ?

How have it shaped the society for you .

As for me it is an amazing source of Income , it may not be 100% what you could want , but it helps you get those late night pizzas I might say .
If you are a student it becomes even more necessary because as a student you are not allowed to work , all you could do is rely on it as an independent source of income apart from all the society ( don't know about other sources but in medical you are not allowed to work ).

Let's hear it from you .

Everybody knows, uses and is comfortable with fiat, but Bitcoin is relatively new. While it has a lot more obvious advantages, it's still got a long way to go before it gets to mass adoption. Right now, most people are not aware of its advantages as such.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In the next decade, BTC and digital currencies will “fully” replace fiat? on: December 08, 2019, 11:40:13 AM
I doubt if that will happen. What's more likely is fiat and crypto existing alongside each other in complete harmony.
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto Currencies VS local law policies on: December 08, 2019, 11:37:44 AM
Crypto Currencies is facing local law policies many where: Local law can be a barrier for many countries to accelerate the blockchain industry. I read the sentiment of many people where the bitcoin or concurrency is not legally authorized but they are very much excited to use this technology. I think, a global revelation only can bring those countries to be inspired.
Eventually, all crypto will be regulated, and it looks like that's where most countries are headed.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: my story: why bitcoin has failed (and keeps failing to this day) on: December 08, 2019, 11:31:20 AM
I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say, but I'm sure bitcoin hasn't failed.....and I don't think it will. Any investment must be held for a long time if you expect to see some success.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sale my old bike and buy bitcoin, what do you think? on: December 08, 2019, 11:27:10 AM

20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Bitcoin gifts for Christmas? on: December 08, 2019, 11:23:18 AM
I would gift a Cobo Tablet. Secure backup for recovery seeds, can be used with any software or hardware wallet that supports BIP39 - https://shop.cobo.com/products/cobo-tablet
