281  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: July 08, 2011, 10:28:04 PM

But no in fact I see mine stabilize when sleeping.

http://94.197.185.117/monitor/bitcoinminer-1/bitcoinminer-1/phoenix_stats.html

Check out the hour I was away not working on the machine. A steady line on both GPU's as soon as I wake you see the wobbly lines at the end lol

That's some fancy graphs! I look forward to using them in 0.2 final. But if you disable the sleeping of the monitor, and leave the computer alone, do you get the same rates and stability? Or was the instability caused by your use of the computer? Maybe waking up the screen by moving the mouse causes a temporary drop in hashes causing the rate to be displayed lower than normal, but if the screen didnt wake up maybe it was going along at the fast rate?

Also is there something I can use to analyze and generate some fancy graphs like this before using 0.2? Thanks.

How can I disable the screen from turning off when Im not at the miner? Im perfectly happy using the power button on the monitor, and I feel like the rates go down while the screen is sleeping, has anyone else noticed this or maybe a rise in hash rates? Thanks.
283  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Total Lack of Linux Software on: July 08, 2011, 08:42:45 PM
Thanks, yes the problem was that I had older drivers, not 11.6. I tried to upgrade following the instructions in the Unofficial ATI Wiki ( http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian ), copy and pasted each command, but it didn't work out for me, so I just downloaded the latest version of linuxcoin and re-installed it from scratch, it has the 11.6 Catalyst drivers and then I used aticonfig to set the clock to speeds similar to what was stable under windows, but couldn't get it as high as in windows without freezing. I'm pretty happy with this still (I get 401Mhashes on one of my 5850s, 389 on the other), thanks for the info swivel.

Aticonfig says you have to stay in the limits that it suggests, but using 11.6 it lets you send commands to set the clock outside those limits, no flashing. Enjoy!

Also use aticonfig --od-commitclocks to write the new values to the card and they will boot with the faster clock speed, make sure that the new numbers are stable or you may run into problems.

...

To those saying Linux users don't want GUIs, you're wrong. While the stereotypical Linux user is too much of a macho power user to use a GUI, the average technically challenged user definitely does and I get requests for it all the time.

...

Sorry to burst your bubble but those who request GUI's for linux are either people who are honest and can't afford windows or simply use linux for the wrong reasons...

I see a lot of noobs, to say the least, try to use linux and fail misserable... why? because they think of it as windows and for some reason are incapable of searching for knowledge without resorting to asking on an online forum.
Remebering a few commandline args isn't that hard... hell i was a complete linux retard 1 week ago and now i got SSH, apache, mysql, php, mining and over(down)clocking @ 1000 core 300 mem and 1,18 Vcore running stable on my reference ASUS 5850 and all i did was search on google and try out stuff on my own...

Bottomline is that technically challenged users shouldn't attempt to run linux and then whine about it being difficult.

/rendrant

Also the whole point in running mining on linux is that you can avoid having a GUI and thus make the overclocking more stable, for example my card couldn't get over 350 mhash/s on windows without being unstable and now i'm rocking 388 mhash/s because the linux box have no GUI

Thanks for that, but more useful would have been HOW you got over 900 Mhz on linux. Everyone on these boards is using aticonfig or for the noobs that like a GUI AMDOcerdriveCtrl, neither of which go over 900. For fun I stuck my 5850 into windows and used Guiminer, and Sapphire Trixx. Turns out my card can clock way over 900, in fact Im running at 1015 @408Mhashes/s .  So obviously us noobs are missing something and it may be obvious to others, we went through the searching, couldnt find an answear so:  How can I properly overclock my 5850 on linux over 900Mhz?
This is why people come to these forums, to learn from others.
285  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Multipool - the pool mining pool (with source code) on: July 07, 2011, 05:35:25 PM
nick5429, can you update us on when pending shares for some of the pools that are having issues will be updated? Also how often will you be sending out payments? Thanks!
286  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Internet Connection Problems / Offline Mining on: July 06, 2011, 01:15:30 PM
So if there is any new blocks generated during the time I lose the internet connection then it is pointless to mine for an offline client?

Basically to be any value I would have to lose the internet connection, find the right hash to generate a block and come back online all before any block on the network is generated?
287  Bitcoin / Mining support / Internet Connection Problems / Offline Mining on: July 06, 2011, 01:06:19 PM
I have a bad internet connection, it craps out for a couple of minutes a couple times a day. If I have two miners running on my GPU, one pointed at a pool and one pointed at my own bitcoin -server (low aggression), will my bitcoin client still be able to generate a block if on the off chance the GPU finds the right hash while the internet is down?  I dont like the feeling of my GPU sitting idle, and I dont want to be wasting electricity on pointless hashing either. Thanks

Just joined your pool, hoping to get the bounty for finding the next block!

A couple of suggestions: Please put another column in the worker stats that shows how long its been since the last share was submitted, this is really useful so one knows how long ago the worker crashed for troubleshooting purposes.  Also please try to redesign the workers names section, the blue box around the name is confusing. The whole name with the email should be the same colour so people know that the whole thing is the name.

Other than that, great pool, nice site, appreciate the notifications when a miner goes down!
289  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How long does MyBitcoin take for deposits? on: July 03, 2011, 11:15:26 AM
Did you ever get your coins? Seems like mybitcoin is down now. Is this site a scam? Has it been hacked? If anyone knows anything about it please let us know.
290  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: is mybitcoin.com broken or hacked (July 3rd 2011) on: July 03, 2011, 11:10:22 AM
I have an account with mybitcoin but cannot login. Dont know if its been hacked, but Im luck I only had 0.01BTC in there.

I would really like to accept payments in BTC for my hosting services, but mybitcoin seems sketchy, anyone have a good alternative?
291  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 3% faster mining with phoenix+phatk for everyone on: June 28, 2011, 06:03:00 AM
How does one get an accurate reading of their rates? My rates seem to jump randomly between 363 to 367 on one of my 5850 and 361 to 364 on my other 5850. Should they both be the same? Should they be jumping this much?
292  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has the ship sailed on mining profitability? on: June 28, 2011, 05:44:03 AM
The problem with starting now is that if the exchange rate stays around where it is now, and even if the difficulty slows its rise, you will still not pay off your rigs. You will get less and less BTC each difficulty increase, which means less $ to pay for your hardware.
If starting today, its possible you will never pay off your hardware. There is always a chance that BTC value will rise, but don't expect difficulty to ever go down, too many people doing this on paid off rigs and as a hobby to make that happen.
293  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: good psu suggestions? on: June 28, 2011, 05:29:03 AM
I use a Corsair builder series 600W 80+ psu and its more then plent to run two 5850s. Its cool to the touch even though its on 24/7. It was relatively cheap too. At the wall this draws about 430W so in theory a 500W psu may be enough, but since all the load is on the 12V rail, check the specs on the box of the psu to ensure that you have enough WATTS on the +12V rail. I would bet that 200W per card is pretty good, its more than plenty for the Saphire 5850s I run.

296  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Once the Exchange opens...What are you going to do? on: June 23, 2011, 01:29:32 AM
Your forgetting SR buyers who have been unable to buy anything in a week due to SR outages followed by this mess. Their funds are all tied up in Mt Gox.

SR buyers provide a strong demand because they don't care what the exchange rate is.. they aren't using it as a commodity to day trade like a lot of people on this forum..
Most sellers on SR put up by USD amount, and the BTC amount changes in accordance with the exchange rate.

uh yeah.. that was exactly my point. They don't care if a BTC is $.01 or $100. The prices are locked to USD and they are going to exchange and spend 20 minutes later.

Who are these SR buyers? And what are they spending BTC on?
297  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another experience with phoenix and "Server gave new work..." problem on: June 22, 2011, 04:04:37 PM
The reason your second machine is showing the Server gave new work message is because you have the -v flag in the command line. If you take it out you wont see the message. Also this really isnt an issue because the other card is doing the exact same thing just not outputting this info because it does NOT have the -v flag.

Worry about the last line, if that number drops to 0 Mhash/sec then you should worry, otherwise things are running well.
298  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lots of noob questions on: June 20, 2011, 07:38:25 AM
I've been mining for a couple of weeks now and one question I haven't been able to answer is does having cards hooked up with the crossfire connectors connected help with hash rates?
299  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CIA conspiracy on: June 20, 2011, 07:29:59 AM
It turns out that one of the computers owned by the people that were doing the security audit was compromised and thats how the hackers got a hold of a database dump. Mtgox was not actually hacked itself.
300  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Did the bad guys sell to themselves at a 1¢, so that $1k withdrawal = 100kBTC? on: June 20, 2011, 07:21:16 AM
They got a list of accounts, but not access to ALL the accounts. The passwords were encrypted, but not strongly, so if you had a weak password it is possible for someone to decrypt it. The crazy part is that they got access to the database through a compromised computer that is owned bu the someone who was doing a security audit on the back end of the exchange!
