Work complexity leads to the maintenance and operational costs that we all face.
These need to be accepted since without them bitcoins would be essentially free to generate.

All your images are showing as the dreaded ImageShack 'Domain Unregistered'.
You should definitely sort that out.
4  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Store owners interested in a price comparison search engine for Bitcoin? on: July 10, 2011, 05:32:57 AM
Hi joepie91,

Yeah, the community is not always super-quick to response to announcements.
Anyways, I think a comparison search engine would be great.
If you want, we can collaborate on the marketplace websites.

For my own search engine, http://bitcoogle.com , I manually review each website before accepting it into the list of websites to be searched.
As such, I could provide you with a list of sites that would be beneficial for you to include in your comparisons.

My projects only assists with locating desired information, which is why I think your price-comparison search engine is a good idea.

I hope you find success Smiley

Awesome change payb.tc
I hope other sites will follow along and make similar changes so that site-scraping does not need to be a dark-art.
At the end of the day, we all need to try and ensure that information is easily accessible - even when retrieved in an automated fashion.

giantdragon, you can simply use the calculator:

+1 for KeePass!
You can also have it require both a key file and a password to unlock... so it's much harder (read impossible) to easily brute force.
8  Economy / Services / Re: Mining Contracts? What's good and bad about them? on: July 09, 2011, 03:46:35 PM
As mentioned, there are a number of guys selling mining contracts. (From the looks of things, I'd say Vladimir has an incredibly snazzilicious operation going on)

Other options:
(A) use the GLBSE to invest in one of the upcoming mining companies, however there has been at least one company that buckled due to the recent difficulty increases (as well as the system maintenance)

(B) find a friend who has a good graphics card, and pay him to run the miner on his PC. Since he has no need for the bitcoins (and he's your friend), he'd be fine with accepting a price (per bitcoin) that's less than current market value.

Using B, you'd end up with more bitcoins than if you bought it on one of the bitcoin markets.

p.s. Of course, these are only two options... there are tons more!
9  Economy / Services / Bitcoogle: The Bitcoin-related Website Search Engine on: July 09, 2011, 02:28:52 PM
Hi everyone!

With bitcoin popularity growing, there have been tons of new and interesting bitcoin-related websites popping up all over the intertubes.
Considering the number of different bitcoin forums/marketplaces/shops/directories, it's becoming quite a mission to easily locate what you looking for as well as the latest bitcoin-related websites.

That's why I figured I'd slap together http://bitcoogle.com to simplify the process. Using the power of Google, it'll (hopefully) find what you are looking for by searching through a list of known family-safe websites.

Please check it out and use the 'contact' section (on the bitcoogle website) to find the respective emails addresses to drop some comments, or request for a website to be included within the search list.
Bear in mind that the current website list is far from complete, and I will be adding new websites as I get them (either from you guys or from forums where the announcement is made).

Lastly, before requesting for the inclusion of a website, please consider whether it will really benefit the community. At present, I am reviewing and processing all of this manually to ensure that the community get the best out of this project.

I'll try my best to note all website acceptances via https://twitter.com/bitcoogle but a list of all accepted websites can also be retrieved from http://bitcoogle.com/websites.php.

Thanks in advance for all constructive criticism, and feel free to tip me either at the address below or the one on the website.

11  Economy / Marketplace / Re: privacyshark on: June 30, 2011, 04:21:55 PM
Most of the bitcoin-related sites/shops are one-man operations.
As such, delays are to be expected.

I am not defending privacyshark, nor the lack of communication.

Since I haven't seen any complaints, I can only assume that the site owner is simply temporarily 'afk'.

14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tips for CPU-only miners? (hopefully I haven't double-posted this!) on: June 17, 2011, 06:12:35 PM
On one of my cabinet shelves sits three CPU-only miners who, have brought in 0.2 bitcoins after mining 24/7 for (somewhere in the region of) 2 weeks.
While this isn't much at all and my electricity costs are far higher than the bitcoin worth, I would have these systems powered-on regardless of whether they are mining or not.
[When not mining, they form part of my beowulf]

Having said this, users need to be aware that CPU miners will not deliver them a fortune. However, if they are looking for a place to start (until they buy decent hardware) then CPU mining is fine to bring in the 0.001 (and smaller) bitcoins.

Quite frankly, I'd rather see more patient CPU miners than beggars on the forums.

By immediately shooting down all thoughts (even remote ones) over the use of CPU miners, we are simply left with non-GPU users that feel obligated to beg (or make a nuisance of themselves) on the bitcoin forums.
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I am mining 1 BitCoin every 3 days approx... on: June 17, 2011, 05:13:24 PM
When browsing in firefox, there is a (slight) noticeable lag when viewing a website hosting the JS miner.
I believe this lag however is simply due to the firefox architecture where a single process is used for rendering + scripts etc.

I have not tested it out in other browsers but, I too, would dislike visiting a website that (quite frankly) is stealing my processing power.  Undecided

17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what does the official client use by default for mining (cpu or gpu) ? on: June 17, 2011, 05:01:22 PM
Also, new users will get frustrated when no coins arrive in their wallet after X days of mining (through the client).
18  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: With newbie restrictions this forum is turning to shit on: June 17, 2011, 04:52:48 PM
Completely agree that being restricted to the newbie forum is annoying however, I just have another hour left before I get released into the greater bitcoin forum.
**can't wait**
 Cool
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin mining on old Windows 98 machines on: June 17, 2011, 07:30:32 AM
Like the saying goes, "One man's junk is another man's treasure".

There is always someone who will buy it, the trick is locating that person.

Anyways, @minebitcoin is not gonna get rich off the old hardware, but at least the spare cash can be put towards something he can use.
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin mining on old Windows 98 machines on: June 17, 2011, 06:52:13 AM
I have a centrino-based laptop which only gets about 500KHash/s but, since i also use it for research, I'm not in a position to sell it.

Since you are still using Win98, I assume those systems are pretty ancient and may not even get 150KHash/s.

My suggestion is that, if you no longer require the Win98 systems, then consider selling them for upgrades to your primary system.

That's at least what I would do.  Cool
