1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: March 03, 2019, 06:52:07 AM
The competition is not standing idle. I don't really see Grin as a serious threat to Monero, but I DO see Litecoin as one, since it has a better image, does not have the same issues with ASICS, ...

But it does, it's mined exclusively by ASICs.

Its not an issue if you don't have a pharyngeal reflex

Or you really don't care about the security of the network and are only shilling because your a bag holder. Wink

Snarky bag-holding pharyngeal reflexive ad hominem attacks aside...

The Network Security issue is about who controls capacity, not how it's mined - https://www.crypto51.app/

Monero is now supported on Coinomi. A smartphone (and desktop) multi-currency wallet. https://www.coinomi.com/en/

Wow - they sure took their time with that, but better late than never I guess.

Anyone here know if wallets can be affected by the upcoming hardfork on March 9th?

Affected as in?

As in errors or quit working.

Edit - also wondering how anonymous Monero is coming from a Coinomi wallet?

I don't blame you for being concerned about the fork.
But it's not the wallet software that's at risk.
If something bad happens at the fork, it won't be a glitch with your wallet software.
If something bad happens at the fork, it could be much worse than that.  It could be a 51% attack, with double spends.
Your concern about the wallet not working is misplaced.  If that's all you're worried about, you can put your mind at rest.
By the way, linux CLI 14.0.0 daemon and wallet work great.  I'm using it now.

I still remember the problems I had upgrading my Linux wallet when Monero forked to v.7. Also I find the frequent forks tiresome, since they are only treating symptoms temporarily instead of curing the disease (ASIC vulnerability). The tech behind Monero is still cool, but not an end in itself, and I don't see the price going anywhere long as it remains "eclectic", and mainly useful on the darknet.

I think the Coinomi Monero integration is a mixed bag -
on one hand it's positive since it makes Monero more useful by providing more mainstream access to more people,
on the other hand accessibility is a big minus if the wallet isn't secure (https://www.reddit.com/r/reddCoin/comments/avb43d/crosspost_warning_coinomi_wallet_critical/).

The competition is not standing idle. I don't really see Grin as a serious threat to Monero, but I DO see Litecoin as one, since it has a better image, does not have the same issues with ASICS, and looks soon ready for MimbleWimble protocol integration. XMR still has cheaper fees than LTC (ASICS could change this for LTC..), and XMR may still win if the DEV's manage to maintain tech lead by salvaging Kovri before it's too late.

...

So seems to me maybe 'drama' ramped up kinda when right after Fluffy sort of went off the rails...?  Coincidence?
...

Come again?

Also interested.

I'm not gonna expand on this other than to say, guys... LOOK: for ME at least Fluffy ain't the same FLUFFY he was at the beginning.  "Something" changed.  Not least being his extreme pro-Core alignment stance (and YES this is WHY I ain't gonna "get into this" because I don't want it to trigger yet another god damn divisive shitstorm of BTCvsBCHvsEveryDamnOtherThing in cryptoverse that this shit ALWAYS triggers...)

I just think SOMETHING is GOING ON that we cannot SEE.

And it's because MONERO REALLY IS A THREAT.  Isn't it?

OR am I just delusional imagining shit that ain't really there?  Crypto GHOSTS haunting me???

LOL  Grin

P.S. Maybe to put it another way: the FACT that there has NOT been any clear apparent ATTACK against MONERO yet so far as we can SEE... to me, must MEAN there is some ATTACK happening that we CANNOT SEE!  The alternative concept that there simply has been "no attack" YET seems to me... impossible.

The most important thing fluffy did in retrospect was to disassociate him self “officially” by giving the big middle finger to wanna-be pumpers/investors by presenting his troll ‘MEA’ video at the 2016 NYC meeting. People always were strongly correlating anything that happened in Monero to fluffy as if he actually were a CEO of some scammy ICO company.

This allowed fluffy to have a life the way he wants to live it, and this also allowed Monero to continue it’s altruistic mission of being a private, decentralized and fungible... so imo, this has nothing to do with fluffy. He has every right to be as much of a troll/blockstream fan boy as he wants. We are in this to go away from a central authority.

Well I think this was an interesting read (especially between the lines..) -

https://unhashed.com/cryptocurrency-news/mimblewimble-coins-falter-litecoin-and-monero-remain-enthusiastic/

So maybe we are looking at Kovri going bust and MW on the Tari sidechain?

Jeezus - I've been away for awhile too  Roll Eyes

So what's the deal with Grin? They published a comparison to Zcash, but nothing head to head with Monero - https://github.com/mimblewimble/grin/wiki/Grin-and-MimbleWimble-vs-ZCash

Looks like Grin has a long way to go before it can be considered competition for Monero imho. But that being said, I do think the Monero Dev Drama could be some cause for concern  Undecided

8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [POW] [MSR] Masari - private, untraceable, and fungible cryptocurrency on: May 27, 2018, 10:07:42 AM
OMG this looks like yet another Monero kockoff Cry

Skimming through the info. it looks like Masari's main claim to fame is better scalability than Monero,  But before I decide to get eyestrain plowing through all 57 pages of this thread,  can someone tell me about any real world use case for Masari besides being faster than Monero? Also, wouldn't the planned Monero lightning implementation make this a non-issue?
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 27, 2018, 08:34:26 AM
I'm pretty sure he's well aware of that and is saying is the "Buy on the news" already priced in which normally could the be case (would have been in the past) except the word is not out to such a larger audience now and that most new (reddit) speculators don't even understand why fungability is a good thing now days let alone what BP is going to bring to the table.

^ Me when I finally made it to the end of that sentence. ^

But I had a bit of a think about it more and I got to thinking that there is just too much information in this space for people to sort through and absorb. So much fud and so much garbage, so much noise to signal. I mean who here knows what the hell is going on in other projects besides their babies? It seems pretty likely that it is not at all priced in.

I think another side effect of that is people in general are starting to cool off toward thowing money at crypto. It makes a certain amount of sense to wait until the feature becomes real, and see if it actually works, before investing.

11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: April 07, 2018, 07:07:45 PM

Damn! can't even leave for a couple of weeks without all Hell breaking loose  Huh

Just did the walley upgrade and it seems to work ok on the new fork, but now I see we are "blessed" with yet another Monero knock-off (first sumokoin, now "monero classic"). Am I correct in understanding that these two are both copies with own blockchains, and the next lovechild, monerov, will fork off from the present v.7 blockchain?

Also wondering how the drop in hashrate after the fork is going to affect ability to scale and confirmation times going forward?

sumo coin did not started same as "monero classic" or might monerov. It started with genesis block, other two started with as many coins Monero had at time of fork.

Drop in hashrate made first blocks slower. So yesterday after hardfork, Monero was as slow as Bitcoin. Like block every 10 minutes. Now it will ofcourse catch up and blocks will be faster then in 2 minutes until it will get back to normal around 2 minutes a block.

Not sure what should ability to scale have to do with it. Monero block can grow and shrink and is not bottleneck of scaling. It is something else, you should google it.

Well, at this point I'm just waiting for all the fallout to settle. Looks like we are now up to 5 Moneros and counting -

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/monero-just-hard-forked-and-it-resulted-four-new-projects/

I will be watching exchange support for all these coins very closely.

13  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [LIST] Free EU bank accounts that you can be opened directly online on: March 30, 2018, 06:28:28 PM

My Leupay.eu account has just been banned a few days ago. My volume is about under 40K EUR for the past few months but all of the outgoing transaction destined to Bitstamp. Despite not mentioning it in the terms, I can say definitely that they're not bitcoin friendly. Luckily, I already transferred out when the hammer came so there's only about 2 EUR left on that account. The request for higher limit may have something to do with the ban and the support has not been answering since the ban came. Going to try Mistertango next.

Thats too sad mate. Sad
Closing your account without providing any explanation beforehand is really worrying.
Also, were you given the option to withdraw or they just confiscate the funds?
Please clarify, did they you asked to provide more documents to increase the limits and you didn't comply?

There were only 2 EUR left in the account as luckily I've just recently transferred to Bitstamp a few days before the closure. They asked for explanation of the funds and supporting documents, I provided transfer receipt from the bank and stated that it is for investment on Bitstamp. They sent the thread where they communicate with Satabank (their account provider) a few days after the closure  and a staff from there said

"Since the client confirmed that he is trading cryptocurrency, we need to terminate the account. Kindly request disposal instructions.

Thanks.
Kind regards,

Satabank p.l.c.

Considering that Malta aspires to be a major crypto hub it's really strange that Leupay is throwing business away  Huh

Oh I see what you mean now, they have no overheads.

So they are like our version of free/cheap electricity miners, no one else can compete with them then on price to ROI.

Thanks, sometimes just need to engage brain a bit more.

Yes, they're basically just stealing CPU cycles and Memory instead (well, also electricity but indirectly).

15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: October 09, 2017, 06:12:06 PM
OK so if price and volume = market cap and increased market cap = increased price

If this mining fad kicks off will we see an increase in volume and therefor price of Monro's?

Is no news bad news? or will we get some taint from this?

is the only browser based miner so far Monero or are there others?

I can see only lower price because of this- it's free'ish money for the owners of these websites and
will probably sell often at whatever price is.

Unfortunately I have to agree - if coin supply outstrips demand then the Monero price goes down :-(

I think that the high Monero emission rate has probably been too fast - too many coins in too few hands, and not enough merchants and infrastructure to use the coins.

16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: 💥💥💥🚀[ANN][PRE-SALE][ICO] BitIndia - Freedom is better - Exchange & Wallet🚀 💥💥💥 on: October 08, 2017, 11:28:52 AM
Everybody who thinks about investing in this project, please bear in mind my observations during the last weeks:

- I was very interested in the project (esp. because McAfee) and signed up for the newsletter on 25 September. Besides some news about "Meet our Founders in Dubai", I quickly received two e-mails stating that "BitIndia ICO is Live" with an Ethereum address in the e-mail - in contrast to that "only 200 ETH Minimum investments, please first register on our website"-mentality. I do not know whether BitIndia was hacked during that time, all I know is that all e-mails came from the same e-mail address ico@bitindia.co. --> E-Mails and Newsletter are either not aligned with overall strategy, or it is fraud and they hope to get some more tokens besides that "minimum 200 ETH" thing, or they are just incompetent to identify hacks and to clarify the danger in public

- In the e-mails, always a minimum of 200 ETH is stated, on the website it is 150 ETH --> incompetency

- When I first read into the project (must be 25. September) there were links to a Slack channel everywhere: bitindiaofficial.slack.com As I see Slack as the best communication tool I registered to find out, that it seems to be the second slack channel (as "BitIndia Official" stated that due to spam they opened a new one). However, it was completely empty, and only a few questions (the easiest ones) were answered by "Bitcoin Official". I asked them on Telegram whether they have a Slack channel and they said "No". I sent them the address and asked them to clarify whether this slack channel is official or not - they never did that. They also did not answer my questions about BitIndia on Telegram

- While Telegram is only a one-way communication channel with the developer alone (well, it was apparently, now they changed it and have 30 members) and the before-mentioned Slack channel is either official and empty or fake (and empty), they have a very big Facebook and Twitter community... think about that what you want.

Last but not least a list of questions of a Slack user, which I found quite interesting. I also sent these questions to BitIndia in their telegram channel, but they never answered:

Quote
1) What is the USP of BitIndia? What can BitIndia do better than other exchanges? At least, Poloniex, Bittrex etc. already have their exchanges built up and it is easier for them to „do marketing“ in India with what they already have and they do not have to start from scratch on
(2) How does it come that every news article on the webpage is the same? Is it paid advertisement?
(3) What is your explanation for this really, really low user involvement, more specifically how does it come that nobody is participating in bitcointalk or Slack channels? Only on Facebook you have a lot of followers (but we all know you could have also bought them). It is just very surprising, that, given this promising ICO, nobody really talks about it (and if they do, only negatively).
(4) What is your plan to prevent a huge dump between token distribution and start of the exchange? Will the coins be available on other exchanges (unlike BNB)? There are many ICOs, e.g. Primalbase, that saw a huge decrease in value as necessary infrastructure were not built up until months after the ICO. I fear that could be the same here, but maybe you can prove me wrong.
(5) Are you involved in governmental discussions about cryptocurrency or must you fear a change in regulation that might destroy your use case after all?
(6) How exactly do you plan to „reach 20%“ of all Indians? Marketing (if yes, paid with what)? Why couldn’t e.g. Poloniex just use its capital (and I am sure it has something) to make marketing in India and get all the customers?

I do not want to believe this is fraud (esp. with McAfee involved in it). However, the inconsistencies in communication, the lack of any fanbase on Slack / Telegram / Bitcointalk and the intransparent ICO details make me think that it is indeed either fraud (and McAfee fell for it) or a very, very incompetent team - both is very bad for any investments.

Has John McAfee actually endorsed the project or verified his involvement anywhere outside of the BitIndia website?

I have a Linux CLI. If I download Linux GUI, will it use the existing blockchain or start sync from scratch?

I am running the GUI wallet on Gnome 3 with external blockhain sync...

It works very well, and I am saving +30GB disk space because I don't need to host a local blockchain DB  Smiley

Since no exchange or wallet is available yet, then I guess that any tokens I might buy would be registered and held locally on Bitindia.co ?
19  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [LIST] Free EU bank accounts that you can be opened directly online on: September 24, 2017, 08:24:14 AM
I guess there should be no difference between both?
There is no difference. Fidor recently opened for most of Europe.

Hmmm....  Huh
As far as I can see the fidor.de website says that you need permanent residency in Gerrmany to open an account -

Quote from: Fidor Bank link=www.fidor.de/help

Where can I find information about them opening for most of Europe?

I'm not satisfied with the Monero clients. I would like to have something similar to Electrum

You can use the GUI with a remote node, which kind of results in the GUI acting as a light wallet. See:

https://moneroworld.com/#nodes

Thanks for the helpful post - I could definitely use the extra 30+GB Monero Blockchain space on my laptop for other things.

Would there be any security issues using the Moneroworld node with my wallet (I'm running Linux...)?
