1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: LN annoyances on: January 24, 2019, 05:08:13 AM
I don't intend on routing public tx when I move to mainnet though, I planned on routing through TOR with a private address. So, my use-case might not be the best because if everyone did it this way, it would defeat the purpose of LN.

The thing is that even when i'm not an expert in the subject, Tor could solve many security issues and not only DDoS. It's a somewhat simple solution for what could potentially be bigger problems specially today when DDoSing or hacking security systems is becoming increasingly easy.

The point of view of the administration to improve security couldn't come in a better time.

if only everyone ran a TOR Relay and an LN Node ... imagine the private, trustless, open utopia we could live in.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: newb- Lightning node questions on: January 23, 2019, 02:54:14 PM

it seems the Daemon is running...but anyone know what the #'s mean or can tell me how much longer I can expect this to take I'd be grateful. Also I assume I cannot run "$ lightningd" command until this thing is done?

I think it just needs time to sync. Sometimes it can take a LONG time.

Also, there is no "lightningd", there is LND though, as well as c-lightning libraries. I havent used c-lightning, but getting LND up and running with bitcoind on raspbian wasn't that difficult. Other than the LONG times for the initial sync.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How about a bitcoin coinstar? on: January 23, 2019, 04:04:57 AM
The only issue is you can only change cash into BTC, not coins.
This is from their website :
https://www.coinstar.com/bitcoin
"Only cash is accepted. Coins cannot be used for Bitcoin transactions."

So you'd have to change your coins into bills and then use those to buy BTC... which means more fees.

but what if the machine had a LN node? The user would have to download an app (ln wallet) to their phone obviously, but then the UX could just be:

- walks up to machine
- taps phone onto machine to create channel
- dump physical coins into "coinstar" machine
- machine counts money, sends tx to user
- user walks away with BTC in a LN wallet.

Then you could handle tx as low as a few dollars. Still taking the 10%, you could even just program that  10% right into the fees since these would also be private LN nodes (for security reasons).

I just got my node up and running on testnet today.

AFAIK, you don't have to route public payments. Its just a setting in lnd.conf (specifically nat=true needs to be deleted/commented out).

Also, I am running LND with bitcoind (not btcd) and so far, everything is working just fine (after a very very long time to sync everything).

I don't intend on routing public tx when I move to mainnet though, I planned on routing through TOR with a private address. So, my use-case might not be the best because if everyone did it this way, it would defeat the purpose of LN.

Anyway, enjoy your time here lass!  (assuming you're really a woman)

lmao! last time I checked I was! verifiable(?) on twitter @satoshiswife Wink

maybe I will write BIP that can authenticate gender with a PGGP key (the extra g stands for gender)? haha

Interesting choice of username by the way.

I'm married to the blockchain! Smiley <3

Also, I want it to be known that I'm a woman in this space (fully expecting trolls though). I think we need more women in bitcoin!

I've been following bitcoin since 2009,
Welcome at last i could say.
Its great that by beign involved you not only registered on this forum but also managed to learn about and setup lighting node.
You are way ahead than most people after many years of people beign interested in Bitcoin.

haha, thanks! I feel like an absolute noob, even after following for so long!

With design and UI/UX being my specialty (dev is just a hobby!), once my LND is up and routing payments, I am going to turn the tutorial I loosely followed into a super easy to understand graphical tutorial.

I've been following bitcoin since 2009, always wanted to get involved but life had other plans as well as it seemed too technically advanced for me.

Got really interested in the price/trading aspect of $BTC around 2014/2015, bought my first (fractional) bitcoins in 2016. 2017 was exciting! 2018, not as much. Thats when I really started to learn about the fundamentals and the progress it's made re: tech and especially the lightning network.

A couple weeks ago I've decided to get more involved on the tech side, and over the past couple days have been setting up a raspberry pi to run a lightning node. It's been really exciting and I've already learned SO MUCH about PGP, sha256 encryption, and using the command line.

I was actually laid off last year and I have no intention of entering the world of traditional advertising ever again. I have an idea that might fix the problems with restaurant reviews and I think I can incorporate lightning nodes with NFC readers to allow REAL people to leave REAL reviews and get some satoshis in the process. What forum would be good for me to discuss that in?

I'm excited to finally post here! I remember first learning of bitcoin through the old Something Awful forums like 10 years ago! I can't believe that crazy experiment I tried to convince my partner at the time was the future actually made it this far. Now, if only I bought BTC in 2009 instead of going on that trip to Europe... oh well!

Cheers to the next 100 years my dudes!
