1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AIRcoin - 19th Largest Cryptocoin by Marketcap on: March 21, 2014, 08:49:13 AM
Unless you live in a minorty of suburbs the best domestic connection you get in Australia is 24/1 (and thats if you live next door to an exchange) 1Mbps upload isn't going to be stable no matter what size pool you run. A bussiness grade VDSL connection is several thousand a month for a symetrical 10/10 connections (still not ideal for running multiple pools).

Try finding me an Australian VPS under a few hundred a month. Then add to that DDOS protection and the cost of a domain (very mininmal I know but it adds up).

Add to this the time spent maintaining the pool (I work 2 jobs) and you'll find it's pretty easy to start running at a deficit. The pool has been running 30MH/s since I started it with an average of about 1 air per day in fee's. So My air pool earns me about 0.05 BTC a month. The server costs $250 a month with ddos protection adding a substantial amount ontop of that. I'm sorry but I'm not going to continue to work a second night shift job just so that I can do a largely thankless job.

If you believe its as easy as you think I challenge you to run your own server for a month and see if you aren't pulling your hair out at the end of it. I'm sorry you seem to feel that I owe you something but that's just not the case.

Everyone can just mine right to my wallet, I will split everything equally. Easy, see! No shares needed! Tongue

Yea, many do not know what it actually takes to run a full service. I watched a few people try to do this from home, with "high speed" internet, and they all just fail miserably. (Even just trying to run a simple web-server. They don't realize downloading is fast, uploading is buffered to hell and limited. Not to mention the limited constant connections that are required.)

That is why I didn't hesitate to offer you coins. (I run web-hosting, so I know that game. Not from my house.)

Yep. You would be lucky to even run something like a VOIP server on most home connection's without experiencing major upload bandwidth issues, let alone serveral stratum ports and MPOS frontend's that are constantly under attack from DDOS'ers

Hey guys I've been mining at air.ctrlaltdefeated and this message just popped up so i figured i would let every one know about it. "Probably going to shut this pool down today instead of upgrading to the new wallet. If you guys would please start withdrawing your coins so that I don't need to manually pay everyone out it would be appreciated."

ffs seriously @ctrlaltdefeated ?

you suck!

Just signed up and started mining on Carbonshark and Cryptopool no problems and they have a lower hashrate so are good choices to spread the hash out more evenly.

I won't be using any ctrlaltdefeated pools again, it sounded like a hissy fit.

Wow thats a bit unwarranted. Both you guys have had 0 fee's for as long as the pool has been around. I've just started a second job and don't have time to maintain pools any longer. If one of the miners hadn't brought the wallet update to my attention I likely wouldn't have even known and we probably would have forked. Would you have preffered that happen instead? Air is the only one of my pools that has any hashrate at all and taking a look at my server cost it was fast becoming an expensive hobby. It should be noted that out of the 9 miners left on my pool only 5 of them are paying fee's and its been that way for weeks now. I'm not a bussiness and I cannot afford to run at a cost.

As far as a "mature" response goes, There's not a whole lot I can fit into that small message box that gets the point across and doesn't make me sound like an asshole.

Thanks for the appreciation though.

how is it expensive?.. firstly, i would have been happy to go 1% fee (which FYI i was donating for a while)

secondly, a pool this size being really expensive? i could run it off my spare laptop, let alone one of my PC's or rigs, easily....

and do you seriously not know you can put a full post on 'home' and say 'we're shutting down, read the post'Huh

sad to hear you're having troubles though, i was really enjoying the general stability.. and you WERE a lot more active previously haha

Truth of it is that alot of pool owners would barely be breaking even and they get virtually no thanks at all but when the shit hits the fan they have a mob of angry people after them.

wow you guys are awesome. Server is paid up until the 27th (26th for the guys over in the States) so I'll keep it running until then. Please keep your donations guys I'm not asking for handouts and I now feel terrible.

I'll set pool fee's at 0% for the rest of the week. Much love guys  Kiss

Just paying honor where honor is due...

I probably can't keep the miner there that long anyway (couple interesting coin launches coming up)

Hey no worries dude. I appreciate the thought Cheesy

Well my mistake. Apologies. At any rate I'm limited to how many characters I can use for that message and rather than waste it explaining why I was shutting the pool down I thought it a better idea to let users know that it was shutting down and that they should withdraw their coins. I'm sorry that this offended you.

I only left the AIR pool running (all my other pools were shut down a week ago) to support the coin as I believe that AIR has potential. During the entire time I only collected the pool bounty twice and that amounted to a grand total of about 11 AIR. I feel I've done my part to support this community and to be called out on not being able to do it any longer is not a nice feeling.

I've been mining on pools that have just dissapeared into thin air and have taken my coins with them which might be worth your consideration. I don't want this degrading into a flame war so with that I'll say So Long and thanks for all the fish (there wasn't really any fish though Smiley )

Hey guys,

I must apologize for pulling the stratum down last night. I was asked to open an auroracoin pool due to the current pool list being under heavy strain. Within about 2 hours of putting it up I had reached 350 workers and a hashrate of 800MH/s which put my server under some strain. I only started hosting servers looking to support some of the smaller coins and didn't anticipate the explosion that happened (Now know how Blizzard and EA feel).

At any rate I have contacted my host and upgrade is on the cards. Stratum is now back up and everything looks to be running well.

Again I apologise and have set fee's back to 0 for everyone. I would like to mention that cron's were running and you should have been able to withdraw your coins at any point should you have wished to do so.

wow the pools really need to remove the 0.1AUR fee to cash out, that is just plain robbery.

Agreed, which is why we've had 0.001TX fee for both manual and auto payouts since pool launch.

at 0.1 thats $1.60ish USD just to withdraw your earnings...
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR][MANDATORY UPDATE] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: March 01, 2014, 04:07:49 AM
Wow...I am really jazzed about this Aurora Coin thing but mining it sucks really bad.

There doesn't seem to be enough work which reduces my hash-rate significantly.

I can make a lite-coin in roughly 1.5days but the way Aurora Coin is looking it will be more like 3 days.

I don't thinking mining has matured for this coin yet.

Well Aurora is currently worth more than litecoin so there's that to consider.

It would be nice if we had a little more information about the Aurora Coin Network.

Is a shortage of transactions a known issue right now causing shortage of work for miners?

Or, is it a pool thing?

Lots of pools were essentially being ddos'd by miners alone...Popularity exploded and many weren't ready for the surge.

We've held up reasonably well during the saga so give us a go and see if its any better.

Who Are We?
CharityMiningPools was created to allow miners the ability to mine coins while still knowing that their hashing power is going towards something good.  Our goal is to provide a positive and reliable service while delivering a small portion of the proceeds to a deserving recipient.  Plans are in the works to allow individual miners to choose where they would like to donate to based on a pool of available recipients.

How Does This Work?
All coins minded at CharityMiningPools will require a mandatory 0.5% Donation fee.  This donation fee will be collected and donated to the designated charitable recipient for that given month.  Though we only require a minimum 0.5% Donation fee, we welcome and encourage our miners to raise the stakes and donate more to a good cause.

All of those complaining that all the pools are shit, well, why don't you set one up and see what it's like.

Couldn't agree more. We pour time, effort and money into hosting these pools only to get shit on the moment something goes wrong. You think the pools are crap? That's fine....Go and solo mine while the difficulty is at 2k or better yet go pay for your own server and lets see how you do!
