281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Questions about pay transaction fee. on: April 02, 2011, 03:03:35 AM
So all the network confirms the transaction, transaction fee only makes you to the top of the queue and even if at that time the miner is offline it will receive the transaction. Is it correct?

The act of the "network" confirming the transaction is actually the act of a single miner finding a block.  A "block" is really just the confirmation of the transactions contained inside.  Thus, if you as a normal user include a transaction fee in your payment to Random Service A, in approximately ten minutes or less, some other online hard-working miner will confirm that transaction in the block he/she solves.  That person will receive the transaction fee that you paid, and Random Service A will receive the remainder of the balance you sent.

You are correct in that including a fee does improve your chances that your transaction will be included in the next block.  This is because it is entirely up the miner itself whether or not to accept transactions that don't include a fee.  At the current moment, I'd say that most miners (and pools) are willing to accept any transactions regardless of whether there's a fee or not, though already we are starting to see some very minor delays.  In the future, it is expected that because the reward-per-block diminishes over time, that eventually it will be the transaction fees that will motivate miners to continue mining, rather than the actual reward.

Isn't the limit already 40 BTC per week, not per day?
283  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [SOLD] Used Seagate 7200.4 320gb 7200rpm SATA Laptop Hard Drive 50 BTC on: March 31, 2011, 11:35:22 AM
To be honest, this is a great price for double my current capacity at that RPM.  The only reason I haven't commented on it until now is that my laptop's screws are, well, screwed up.  ONE of the 18+ screws is stripped which means I can't take apart the bottom part.  Friggin sucks.
284  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Earn 34BTC or 20-21BTC for getting shops/organisations to accept Bitcoin on: March 31, 2011, 10:40:42 AM
I had a number of agendas in this post (the primary one being the ability to filter posts within the app), and thus I don't expect to receive anything for it.  Just wanted to post it as more of a public record, more than anything.

EDIT:  for the record, I have absolutely no idea how closely he watches his email, if he even monitors it at all.
285  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Earn 34BTC or 20-21BTC for getting shops/organisations to accept Bitcoin on: March 31, 2011, 10:22:51 AM
This is mostly indirect, so it's probably stupid for me to post it here, but it's a feedback email I just sent to the creators of a Twitter client for the iPhone.  Given that I just sent it now, I have not yet received a response, but we'll see what happens.  Relevant bit is in the final paragraph (bolded).

Quote
Forewarning: this is a long email, relatively speaking.  I understand you must get tons of emails every day, and thus it's easy to simply discard mail from the common user, but I plead you to read this.  I mean heck, I'm sending the email because Twitter's 140-character limit cannot possibly contain all that I wish to convey.  You've been highly responsive on Twitter, for which I praise you, and I can only hope that you're as responsive to email.  That said, here we go.

Hey guys, just wanted to first congratulate you on the amazing work you've done with SimplyTweet.  I've been a loyal follower after I randomly found your app on some "free app for a day" thing celebrating your first birthday, which was actually only a few days after I joined Twitter.  It was a timing coincidence, but I couldn't be happier.  I upgraded to ST 3 without question, and have (somewhat unsuccessfully) attempted to convince my iPhone-bearing friends to consider it as a good app to purchase, especially back in the time when the official Twitter app didn't have push notifications and Echofone only supported push between users of the same app.  Sadly I don't think any of them actually switched, but oh well, their loss.

Regarding Twitter's latest announcement that they essentially don't like 3rd-party apps, AKA they don't like anyone who doesn't show the "awesomebar" panel of ads, well screw them.  I truly hope that their announcement doesn't discourage you from continuing to work on SimplyTweet.  They made an API, and now they want Emperor-level control of how that API is used?  Bulls**t.

That said (aka now that I've buttered you up), there is a single feature found in other apps (like Tweetdeck) that I would like to request, and it's enough of a gamebreaker that I'm seriously considering switching apps, though I *really* don't want to.  Granted this is more of a fault of the people I follow, but still.  I would really like the ability to filter out certain phrases and hashtags and never see them ever again.  I swear, if I see yet another 4Square checkin or Formspring "ASK ME ANYTHING LOL" message or "Daily Twitter Horoscope" thing... Well, let's just say that filtering out those posts is easier than directly confronting these people and asking them to stop spamming my timeline with their uselessness (trust me I have tried on all accounts and it hasn't worked).  If I can ignore them, I will be a very happy man.

This is just a simple[1] use of regular expression, right? </pointlesssarcasm>
[1] OH GOD REGEXPS.  Useful yet PAINFUL AS HELL, dear God.  My sympathies for my request.

On a similar note, I follow a group off people who regularly attend various events nationwide. For some of these events, I can become somewhat jealous that I am unable to attend, and because they are usually rather diligent about using hashtags for these events, being able to filter them out would be beneficial overall, at least in preventing my own jealousy.

It's just something to think about, at least.  Like I said, I love SimplyTweet (especially the conversation view, which I am highly intrigued how you managed to code up, coming from an Electrical Engineering / CS background).  I can only hope that you continue releasing updates to iOS 3.x+ devices, and that you take my request to heart.  If not, well then at least I still have a fully functioning Twitter app that I'm happy with, so I guess I can't complain.  It still amazes me that people don't understand that running a push server actually costs time and *gasp* MONEY to maintain, and the fact remains that you've been one of the most reliable people to provide push functionality in this regard, minus your PUBLICLY ANNOUNCED outages, and for that I congratulate you.

And finally, I would like to donate some money to your cause, whether or not you implement my feature requests.  I honestly don't care, and you've done enough to earn it.  Do you have a Bitcoin address I can donate to?  If so, I will pledge 10 bitcoins, which at the current MtGox value of ~$0.80 USD per bitcoin, is worth $8.  Not much more than the standard cost of the app, sure, but I would hope that you can't give up free money, right?  Note that CoinPal and CoinCard are currently the easiest ways to convert between USD and Bitcoin, and yes, I am not-so-subtly attempting to promote this alternative currency here.  That said, I *do* pledge 10 bitcoins, and whether or not you choose to accept them is entirely your call.  You introduced me to the world of Twitter (for which I thank you greatly), so I feel slightly less shameful in my attempts to introduce you to the world of Bitcoin, though I do understand how divided your attention may be so I will not push it.  You've given enough to me as a user already.

Thanks again,

Ricochet
286  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Hiding the command window on: March 30, 2011, 05:17:16 AM
I've always been a fan of the "PowerMenu" app for minimizing programs to the tray.  It's a *really* small and simple file (less than 150 KB) and it does what it's supposed to do.  I use the version that doesn't require installation, though I'm guessing the installer version would have an option to start at bootup if you'd like.

287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 4chan discussing bitcoin on: March 30, 2011, 05:08:34 AM
"First person to get triples gains x.xx BTC" is a bad idea.  People are apparently fascinated with getting those types of numbers, and so lots of people use scripts or programs that predict exactly when a specific post number will come up and submit at the appropriate time.  Thus, for someone actively trying to get the number, the chance is much higher than 1/1000.  Probably closer to 1/4 or 1/5, depending on how accurate the predicting script is.
288  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Pay Less. Pay BitCoin" - marketing idea for small businesses? on: March 29, 2011, 03:56:23 AM
My local booze store charges less for cash transactions than credit/debit, which always struck me as somewhat odd since I thought that sort of thing was very much against the TOS of the various credit card agencies.  Much like the "minimum of $xxx.xx total for card transactions" signs which I know are against the TOS.

Nevertheless, I could easily see the same thing happening here, unless of course we get to the point that transaction fees become required to be accepted into a block in any reasonable amount of time.  Sadly I think we're already headed that way, with fee-less transactions already experiencing delays.

EDIT:  for clarification, I am in the US and am talking of the policies within the country
289  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Remove "generate bitcoins" from standard client? on: March 29, 2011, 03:30:28 AM
I'd normally be in favor of a large warning, but we are talking about preparing for an onslaught of average clueless users here.  The average user is not going to read a warning of the length that would be required to sufficiently describe why it's a bad idea, so they'll click OK and still get angry when they don't generate anything.  Thus, keep the text of the menu option but make it pop up a very short message.  Something like "You are unlikely to generate a block in any realistic amount of time on a standard CPU.  If you do still wish to enable generation, download the separate mining client at www.example.com"

Personally I've mostly stopped mining entirely.  The difficulty is so high that even with a pool, using my GPU and both CPU cores, it would take multiple days to earn 0.20 BTC.  Even when my electricity is free, that's not worth the additional strain on my computer's components.

Thanks again for these posts!  I've been out of the loop for just over a week and this was a great way to get caught up on recent happenings.
291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 4chan discussing bitcoin on: March 29, 2011, 02:46:16 AM
Yeah, threads on /b/ last for either mere minutes up to a max of a few hours.  Perhaps a screenshot should have been taken (I use the Screengrab Firefox addon).
292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is very bad... on: March 29, 2011, 02:45:05 AM
HTTPS isn't the default. No one should be ending up there unless they already know what they're doing.
I've seen multiple people link to the HTTPS versions, so whenever I happen to click on that I get the Firefox warning.

TOR as well, saw it on a wiki page and investigated out of curiosity.
294  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Too pool or not to pool? That is the question..+ a poll & poolings effect on BTC on: March 18, 2011, 08:52:27 PM
Except that the early adopters here are more likely to be highly attentive of what's happening with their clients, and if Slush's pool were to suddenly go down for more than a day or two, I suspect the networking power would return in the form of the growth of other pools fairly quickly.  A temporary loss of 120 Ghash/s yes, but not for a very long time before people manually switch to another solution.

...who exactly are you expecting to say "no" to this?
296  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Instant-Payout Mining - BitPenny.com on: March 18, 2011, 03:05:20 AM
The per-share rate will change when the difficulty changes, which should happen approximately every two weeks in theory.  The difficulty is currently predicted to actually decrease for the first time in sometime less than a week.

In theory, over an extended period of time you will get the same number of shares no matter which pool you're using or which distribution method being used, and the overall payment should be the same.  At that point it's a matter of how much the pool itself is taking as its cut.  Here it's 10%, while other pools may charge less.  For BitPenny the advantage is that you get a fixed amount of money per share contributed, so the amount received is more predictable.  With other systems, the payout per person is only determined at the moment the block is actually solved, and then it's divided based on how many shares each person contributed vs the total number of contributed shares.

Slush's pool takes it one step further and weighs shares found just before solving the block higher than shares found early in the round.  This is an anti-cheating effort, and again in the long-run the final payout should remain the same as with any other system.

Try putting a forward slash at the end of the URL (after :8332), and make sure your username is in the format LoginName.WorkerName, noting that everything for the username and password is case-specific.

299  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoins catch on, will people get used to having so few? on: March 07, 2011, 10:13:05 PM
I'll just chime in here and say I too have worried about this issue.  Part of the issue is simply conventional notation, where digits left of the decimal point tend to be separated every 3 digits (whether it's by a comma or period or whatever the local convention is), while for digits right of the decimal point, all you've really got is scientific notation to give you a quick feel for how far out the number extends.
300  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - A Movement? on: March 05, 2011, 03:24:09 AM
I think at the moment it's mostly a fad among tech-savvy participants.  However, as more instances occur where people are unable to make the transactions they want (in other words, the more Wikileaks-type incidents that happen), the more publicity it will get, and the more legitimate it will become.

My long-term prediction, without any real backing to speak of, is that Bitcoin will eventually become an equal player alongside such entities as PayPal and the major credit card agencies.  I don't realistically expect it to surpass them or become the "one currency to rule them all" or anything.
