The rise from $100 to $1000 was supported by two things

1. People unable to withdraw USD from MtGox were bidding up the BTC price to withdraw in BTC
2. Growth of BTC use in China

I think people underestimate the factor #1...

Why would they need to convert to local currencies of international customers?

Is there fiat withdrawal delays? Then the risk is probably priced on the StampUSD. If the delays get bad, the rats start leaving the ship through BTC while bidding its price up.

Usually the most simple explanation is right. Gox is missing both fiat (~$30m) and BTC (~$400m).

Chances are:
a) robbed by hackers/scammers (not possible according to most experts)
b) robbed by insiders (possible, but must have been going on for a long time)
c) were running a ponzi scheme to begin with (the fact that so much fiat is lost would point to this option)
