821  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Crypto X Change - No More Wire Costs - Deposit & Withdraw any Currency $5 Now! on: May 23, 2012, 07:06:49 AM

e) Sent 20 BTC to them awhile ago. 8 confirmations, but their web site doesn't show balance.

I routinely wait for confirmations - most recently 9-12 - it's not a big deal to me, but it might be to others.  Not sure if it a set number or if there is manual intervention, but I've not lost a transaction yet.

As per this thread here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82772.0, here is my current offer.

It looks like I used a different calculation to determine rate per month. I've just listed compounded for 4 weeks, rather than allow for different length months.

Can you provide a link to the Nov2011 taking of deposits?
Ah, whoops. I misread that as age of deposit with Pirate for some reason.

I've been taking deposits since yesterday, so May 2012.

No problem, I added it as May so should be correct - if not, let me know.

I want to fully believe in this so bad. After reading this thread I am one step closer. I am so torn. So torn.

825  Economy / Lending / Re: Bitcoin Savings and Trust is probably a Ponzi Scheme: A Petition on: May 22, 2012, 03:56:31 AM

I honestly can't conceive of anything simpler than a Ponzi scheme.

So therefore, we are limited by your myopia?

That was the point I was trying to make in a couple of places, but that sums it up nice and bluntly.

And if you want an example of how to make money pushing it around in circles, why don't you try shifting money back and forward between two (or more) trading companies that wish to save on the transfer fees that the banks charge for currency exchange.  I've done that and benefited by several hundred dollars (probably less than a grand) just for personal use.  If I was still running cross border businesses, it would be worth a lot more to me.

Another idea that works is to pick on jurisdictions where purchase power parity is out of alignment and move currency/goods to take advantage of the arbitrage.
826  Economy / Services / Re: Gigamining / Teramining on: May 22, 2012, 03:47:45 AM
Looks like gigamining is getting some bitcoin press coverage...

http://www.bitcoinmoney.com/post/23499116232/glbse-stock-market

Interesting article, although I thought it a bit harsh to summarise at the bottom as
These investments are either donations that come with benefits (à la Kickstarter) or they are speculative gambling at the cheapo casino.   There is nothing in between.

I certainly don't see Gigamining at those extreme ends of the spectrum.
827  Economy / Lending / Re: Bitcoin Savings and Trust is probably a Ponzi Scheme: A Petition on: May 22, 2012, 12:28:53 AM
What I'm saying is that the amount of effort he'd have to put in to be running a ponzi like this would be insane.  Ever for the short period he's been running BS&T, it'd be too much for most to be running a ponzi.
The only alternatives to a Ponzi are a legitimate business or some other illegitimate business. Of those three possibilities, a Ponzi probably takes the least effort and provides him the highest potential reward. I would love to hear what you think would be an alternative explanation to a Ponzi scheme that takes less effort.

I can think of several, and it just takes a bit of effort for the book-keeping.  But I'm not going to disclose what I'm thinking of or doing, because that's not how the world works.  You want to get rich, use your resources effectively, and don't give them away.

Edit, while sitting and thinking of some variations, there are systems that might not work in all jurisdictions, and some places will have better results than others.

It's probably just counting down to the end of the month in your time zone

Hrm, I specified the time zone in the javascript code, so it should show the same countdown regardless of timezone.

Interested and watching.

830  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: PirateAt40's Money Laundering Operations: GPUMAX and BST on: May 21, 2012, 10:26:58 PM
I think the last few threads started with this reasoning:
"I have no factual basis for my beliefs, therefore I argue that someone else is a criminal."
Except this one.  How do you make 7% a week legally?  You don't even have to answer, since he even claimed himself the operation "may be illegal in his country" or something similar.  (For the illiterate: This is illegal everywhere, no doubt about that, so I'm not going to reveal any specifics.) There can't be any doubt about the [il]legality.  The only remaining question is exactly how it is done.  And you don't need to know all the details, not even to get someone convicted.

Actually there are places you can make 7% per week legally.  It's not something I chose to do, and the total dollar returns are not great for me because of market size.  I'll stick to providing 7%/month returns for people (legally), and wait for someone to come trolling that my offering 200+% per year returns "must" be some kind of illegal ponzi shit.  Sure it's not as good as Pirate, nor as such a scale, but it's nicely sustainable.

Are you referring to payday loans?

No I wasn't, but that is certainly an area where it occurs.

Strikes me that people are too occupied with what they see right in front of them, and not what else happens in the world.  Might be that they have not been exposed to the ideas, or not seen what else can be done.

As an aside, when the project I was on was seeking capital a few years ago, most people were looking at 30% to 50% returns per year across several years.  The result was people purchased at 0.32 and sold at 1.40 - made a nice return for them.  Much more conventional, but it was a highly regulated and competitive industry.

Thank you Mr P for a nicely considered reply to some of the other threads.

It still amazes me that there are basically two groups of people, people who believe stuff can not be done (normally stupid), and those who go out and do it (a mix of smart and stupid people).  Mr P is in the second category and probably smart - and I have a friend  in the second category who is stupid and has $2M in the bank.

834  Economy / Securities / Re: Announcing PPT.DIV - Pirate Pass Through Dividend Bonds on: May 21, 2012, 08:32:08 PM
I cant believe these are selling at 1.4-1.5. That will basically mean the return is 1% a week.

Actually, the first dividend that has gone out gives that 1% return for that week.  If you look at the future dividends you will see that they are higher.  By your reasoning the return will be 2% for the next two weeks and then closer to 3% when PPT.D dividends are paid in three weeks time.  Apart from the following week where it will be higher again, with a 1.5BTC price, it looks like 3% to 4% per week return.
835  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MORE Pirate Pass Through Bonds! on: May 21, 2012, 05:35:32 AM
Boom. Just saw the results today. I snagged some at the very bottom for 1.0851 Grin This was my first time to actually use GLBSE, really cool. I love the new interface.
I got in right at the very very bottom for 1.085001. My order was only partly filled.

My brain hurts trying to work out how little a difference that is.    0.000999

So one tenth of a percent over a month - "score!"

Worth having - well done being on the cusp Smiley maybe we should have a prize.
836  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Nvidia + ATI? on: May 21, 2012, 01:38:01 AM

1.) Can I have both a NVidia card and an ATI card installed with NVidia drivers and ATI drivers running at the same time?
2.) Can I use both cards for mining at the same time? (if 1 is yes, I'd image yes for 2?)
3.) Can I run my 5970 mining and game on my 560 Ti (1) is it possible (2) would it be laggy?

Yes - easy.

I have run nvidia and ATI mixed cards in various two and three card combos for several years.  Mainly under W7, but also XP.
837  Economy / Securities / Re: Announcing PPT.DIV - Pirate Pass Through Dividend Bonds on: May 20, 2012, 09:02:44 PM
There have been a few sales of PPT.DIV shares since they have been available to trade, and with the first bond redemption (PPT.A), the first dividend is scheduled for tomorrow at a modest 0.0159.
838  Economy / Securities / Re: [ANN] GLBSE will be slow for the next few days. on: May 19, 2012, 04:16:39 AM
It is back up and running, try going to the site rather than a simple refresh - that worked for me.

Also, with some quick work and cooperation things worked pretty well when faced with the problem today.  It was good to see the help Nefario was able to provide and while taking the exchange down was a big step, it was probably the right one at the time.  I'd just like to take this opportunity to say "thank you".
839  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MORE Pirate Pass Through Bonds! on: May 19, 2012, 02:48:43 AM

For anyone that's interested, I saw executions all the way down to around 1.085 (these don't all appear on the GLBSE twitter feed), then two asks of 300-400 shares around 1.18 go up, then some executions around 1.18 (twitter confirms these). Then GLBSE went down.

That's pretty much what I saw too - we think it's almost sorted.
840  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MORE Pirate Pass Through Bonds! on: May 19, 2012, 02:40:31 AM

At least GLBSE performed flawlessly (for me) through the whole release this week Cheesy

EDIT: Oooh, spiffy cloudflare site offline page now. Much prettier than the old one.

EDIT2: Hello "nginx/0.7.67" my old friend...

Actually, we think we broke it again, and are working with Nefario right now to find out what went on.

We were running a redundant sell to make sure it all happened on time this week after last week's problem  (me in New Zealand and Burt in the USA).  We are going to honour all the sales that went through and we're not quite sure how many that is at the moment.
