241  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: ckpool.org ZERO FEE SPLNS no registration mining pool US/DE/CN on: February 10, 2020, 04:55:56 PM
Your source does show that the last block found by CKPool (not solo) was 6 hours ago - if I am reading it correct.  However the btc.com block page shows the last block just shy of a year ago.

Firstly, if you have a miner that mines 50% of the day, you expect at 3 Days for it to show the red line at 50% of the miner hash rate.
If, however you mine random days, on and off all day, then your red line will also be random depending on what you did in the last 3 Days when we find a block.

I'll give a clear description about how PPLNS works, since most people get the wrong idea about it.
Using the term 'ramp' unfortunately is only correct in two cases when mining PPLNS anywhere:

1) When you first start mining, N says how long until your per-block reward will match your start hash rate, if you keep the same hash rate.
2) When you stop mining, N says how long until your per-block reward will drop to zero.

They are 2 specific cases that unfortunately tend to confuse people about how PPLNS actually works.

--

I have a 'tank' description that does correctly match how PPLNS works in all cases:

If you look at the shift graph, there is a green area that runs from 'now' back to N in the past - here N of course has a time value, and is 3 Days.
That green area is your 'tank' of shares.

Thus the sum of the value of all your shares in the green area, when we find a block, decides your proportion of the reward vs the total value of all the shares in the green area for all miners on the pool.

Why I say it is like a 'tank' is that each time a new shift is completed, the old shift falls off the left, and the new shift is added on the right.
If the value of the shift that falls off the left is the same as the value of the shift added on the right, then the red line will be the same.
If the value of the shift that falls off the left is less than the value of the shift added on the right, then the red line will move up.
If the value of the shift that falls off the left is more than the value of the shift added on the right, then the red line will move down.
Like a 'tank' with a hole in it emptying (on the left), and you filling it at the same time (on the right)
If you fill it faster than it empties, it's total value goes up.

PPLNS also means that any single change to your hash rate, up or down, will take N (3 Days) to complete it's effect.

So if you have 50TH of mining full time, and 50TH of mining on and off, and you've been mining both for 3 Days,
then your 100TH tank will be full, and if we find a block then, you'll get twice the reward of someone with a 50TH tank.

If you go to half mining for 3 days, at the end of 3 days you'll have half a 100TH tank, so if we find a block then, you'll get the equivalent of a 50TH tank of mining.

Anywhere during the 3 Days after you switch the extra 50TH on or off, your reward will be whatever level your tank is between 100TH and 50TH - based on what you did in the 3 Days before we found the block.

This is where the higher variance, I mentioned in my post you quoted, comes from.
It's faster for a single miner to get to full speed in the tank, as it is faster for it to get to zero in the tank. 3 Days.

Also be aware, that the pool, since it started: over 65% of the rewards have had an N value of less than 3 Days.
You can see how long the N value is for each Reward you have.

This is probably the most thorough and easy to understand answer I have seen.  Thank you very much, and for explaining the shift graph.  I am in the process of moving my miners over to KanoPool.  Probably about 30 TH when all is said and done.  I have an R4 on the way.

Summer will be interesting - those Alabama summers and mining don't mix too well.  Smiley

I've done an update to KDB and put it live (already)

With this update, I've changed the pool's N in PPLNS to 3 Days rather than 5Nd as it was before.

So, the next block we find, it will ONLY reward all shares in the 3 Days prior to the block.

For new miners or miners considering joining, this means that it will take 3 days for your shares to 'ramp up' to full reward
as opposed to the 5Nd value that was around 148 days on the last block we found.

This also means that if you leave the pool i.e. no longer mining, after 3 days your shares will have 'ramped down'.

Applying the two above Smiley if you have an outage, after 3 days you will have 'ramped down' but also you can then 'ramp back up' within 3 days after you reconnect your miners.

The 'expected' result is still the same as before, however, since the pool is currently small, and the average block time is quite a bit more than 3 days, the variance, due to this change, of your rewards while 'ramping up' or 'ramping down' is much higher.
What this basically means is: that during that 'ramp' (up or down) the expected chance of a reward is 1 in X/3 where X is the average expected days per block based on the current pool hash rate - which is currently about 5 weeks.

Hopefully this will attact more miners, and help us get that average block time much more regular!

Hello.  How does the 3 days impact miners with some running 24/7 and others running off and on?  Here is my situation.  I have an Antminer S9i running 24/7 in the garage.  I supplement my heat with an S5 and 2 S7-LN's.  While the S9i will be mining constantly, the S5 and S7-LN will run as needed for heat.

Will the S5 and S7-LN need to ramp up each time they are turned or, or will the constant mining of the S9i take care of that?

Thank you.

244  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] NiceHash.com - sell & buy hash rate cloud mining service / multipool on: February 08, 2020, 12:07:45 AM
I have been having a problem on and off today with Nicehash having a Dead status on my Antminer S7-LN and S5.  I know the information is correct as they have been working for weeks with no changes to the pool or address information.  Starting today both moved to my second pool option automatically and are working just fine there.

No issues with my Z11 on Nicehash.  For now.

Any ideas what may be happening?
245  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain New Miner S7-LN 2.7T @697W discussion (Not official) on: February 06, 2020, 04:47:06 PM
My S7-LN has 2 boards.  PSU is a Cougar GX 1,000 Gold.  The PSU itself pulls just shy of 100 watts.

Frequency is currently set at 500 - 2.2 TH/s - Pulling 990 watts.  So the miner itself is using 890 and the PSU 100.

When I turn the frequency up to 600 I get - 2.8 TH/s - Pulling 1,200 watts.  So the miner itself is using 1,100 and the PSU 100.

I am getting very similar results on my other S7-LN.  I thought it may have been the PSU so I put an old APW3++ PSU on this unit.  Although the PSU uses more wattage, the miner is pulling similar power.
246  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain New Miner S7-LN 2.7T @697W discussion (Not official) on: February 06, 2020, 12:31:01 AM
I just purchased two of these.  I like that they run on 110v and my house uses electric heat.  My wife lets me use them since they are quiet.  Smiley

Question on power.  I understand the default frequency is 600 and powered via a 1,000 watt PSU.  However, when plugged into a Kill-A-Watt, in order to get it under 1,000 watts, I need to set the frequency to 450 which keeps it around 900 watts (for some safety).

How can the default be 600 when it pulls in excesses of 1,000 watts when using the default frequency?
247  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: ckpool.org ZERO FEE SPLNS no registration mining pool US/DE/CN on: February 05, 2020, 02:52:51 PM
That's my question.  I read through every post of this thread and the glory days of finding 2 blocks in a day.  Why would so many people leave this pool for another when they are losing money with them?

I think this unit is defective.  I received another one and the IP address was found right away.  thanks for the help everyone.

[...]

I was able to do everything except change the DNS setting.  "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is grayed out.

When I power up the miner, the fans kick on and it is very quiet.  The red and green lights are both on constantly as well as the yellow ethernet light.  The green ethernet light flickers.  I know from the S9 that the red and green miner status lights should not be solid as these are.  Could that be the problem?

Yes, we have electric heat and I wanted to use this quiet miner for a heat source this winter.

[...]

Thank you.  Yes, I tried 2 different PSU's.  I even used the PSU from my S9 (only 4 cables) in 110v and I know that works.

Ill admit my network skills are not that vast.  I will certainly read up on the thread you posted, thank you.  I had no issues whatsoever on my 2 S9's and 1 V9.
250  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hooking up Antminer S3 to 750 watt power supply on: January 04, 2020, 04:07:48 PM
Did you own it previously or someone else did? Maybe it's configured for static IP allocation, not uncommon specially if someone owned many and wanted to keep track of each.
Keep trying the factory reset so you can start from scratch. I believe that's what i did with the ones i bought online.
It's also quite possible your miner is bad. This is how one of mine died.

Thanks.  Yes, it was purchased from eBay.  Ill keep trying.  Thank you.

I see the first miner in the work tab is scheduled to receive over 3.31 BTC when we find a block.  That is awesome!
252  Bitcoin / Mining support / Hooking up Antminer S3 to 750 watt power supply on: January 02, 2020, 09:36:58 PM
Hello.  I am trying to hook up my Antminer S3 to an HP 750 watt power supply but something is wrong....

Here is the power supply:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/112855411482

I may not be hooking it up correctly...  There are only 4 power slots but the PSU has 8....  They are numbered P1-P8.

The Antminer powers on and the fan is running very slowly.

Ethernet lights are blinking and both the red and green lights are illuminated.

When I try to go to the 192.168.1.99 it says page cannot be displayed.  I didn't have any problems with the S9.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Here are some images:

I am thinking I may have a larger issue... I tried another PSU and same thing.  And the Antminer is not showing up on the ip search, and 192.168.1.99 is not found....

Any ideas?  I reset it, but even though when I depress the button is does not seem to do anything except turn off the ethernet lights.  Red and Green remain illuminated.

Just pointed my S9 to the pool.  Helped me jump to number 11 in Active Miners.  Smiley  Sad to see the overall pool hash rate dropping.  Right now I am splitting my miners between Nicehash (to bring in some steady money) and CKPool.

254  Economy / Digital goods / eBay Gift Cards and Mining Equipment on: December 26, 2019, 08:31:30 PM
I received a few eBay gift cards for Christmas and wanted to use them to purchase some mining equipment.  Apparently you cannot due to eBay terms and conditions regarding currency...

"This code can't be applied to some of your items."

I am guessing these terms are being triggered by mining equipment:

The Gift Card may not be used to pay eBay service fees. The Gift Card also may not be used to buy eBay Gift Cards, third party gift cards, gift certificates, coupons, coins, paper money, virtual currency, or items generally considered to be "bullion" (for example, gold, silver, and other precious metals in the form of coins, bars, or ingots).

Hello Everyone,

I currently mine with 2 - S9's and 1 - V9 on Nicehash.  It was a good place to learn and get my feet wet.  I am thinking of moving to a pool and am interested in CKPool - It appears to be the most open and transparent one.

Question though...  I get paid out at least twice a week with Nicehash to coinbase for zero fees.  Looking here, it appears payouts are much less frequent.  Also, with the top 50 and top 100 miners, would I push people down, or would my miners help the entire pool?

Sorry for the noob questions - learning as I go.  Thanks everyone.

Currently? You'll have to wait about a year. If you have other means of income, go ahead. Sorry to not sugar coat it, but this is the best pool there is with zero fees, and yet the Chinese whale miners don't seem to care.

If the hash rate increased, payments would be more frequent.

Appreciate the honesty.  I have a D3 coming and once it is up and running on NiceHash Ill move an S9 here also.  I enjoy tracking my status.  I was reading through the highs of this pool where PH/s was huge.  I also like see me climbing the ranks.  Smiley

I just spent 3 days going through the 161 pages and learning as much as I can from this community.  I have my 1 V9 pointed here and will be moving an S9 within the next week or so.

I am using Nicehash for my 2 - S9's and 1 - V9.  It was easy to get started and my feet wet.  I know they are not a traditional mining pool, but I have also read reviews that highlight how Nicehash pays more.  Thoughts?  Was looking at Slushpool or CKPool as other alternatives.

Thank you.

Question about setting up directly in Antminer configuration.  From the example on the webpage, it shows this:

Set your username to your btcaddress with any or even no worker extension, and any password.
eg: cgminer -o stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333 -u 1PKN98VN2z5gwSGZvGKS2bj8aADZBkyhkZ.0 -p x

If doing directly in the antminer configuration would I just use:

URL:  solo.ckpool.org:3333
Worker:  (my btc address)
Password:  x

Is the example above if using cgminer for GPU mining?

Thank you.
