1  Bitcoin / Mining / Solar Energy Bitcoin Mining on: May 13, 2021, 01:29:15 AM
Has anyone had success using Solar energy for bitcoin mining? I’m wondering if it’s even a viable option using the s19 Pro mining equipment. I’ve done research and maybe someone can come up with better results. I spoke with a solar salesman and he says to run 1 s19 pro, I’d need $25k worth of equipment for a 24/7/365 usage. Any other thoughts or options that someone else may have thought of?

Are you sure that you are checking your wallet.dat file? Just so you know, that part you copied has the information of the genesis block. Your wallet should be encrypted anyway, you can open the backed up file with any wallet executable. Electrum is mostly the preferred one other than Bitcoin Core. You shouldn't really dig into encrypted files with Atom or any text editor.

Yes I'm checking the the wallet.dat file. Should the file be readable or use a bunch of blank white boxes? I didn't want to post my wallet. I was using the Genesis block as an example. Both the backed up wallet and the genesis block read similar. (Instead of question marks it's boxes) Good to know about not using atom or test editors for encrypted files. Thanks

I backed my wallet up from Bitcoin Core. When I open the file all I see is a bunch of square boxes.

When I try to open blocks it's all screwed up too. This is what it looks like if I open it with Atom. How can I resolve this? Is there a certain program I need to use to open these files?

Thank you guys for all the information. The reason the logo is copy written, is due to me grabbing a logo off of google images. The Image apparently falls back to Bitcoin.org/en. It's not that they believe the bitcoin logo is patented or anything. It's the particular design of the logo.

This was their response via email about the shirt.
Option A:
To move forward with your order, we need written permission from the company who owns the protected material. Here is a reference to reach out to obtain permission:

If you have permission to use the  image, please submit it to us at service@customink.com. If you happen to have a vector version of the artwork, please send that on to us as well.

I’ve tweeted @bitcoin for permission to use their bitcoin logo on a t-shirt. Waiting on a reply. If perhaps it was missed or something. Is there any other way to request permission from bitcoin.org?

Okay so I've gotten into my router. It's a regular AT&T router. I'm at the option for ports.
Service Name: Assuming I can write whatever I want for that?
Global Port Range: [port]-[Port]
Base Host Port. [port]
Protocol: TCP/UDP, TCP, Or UDP

I don't understand how all this works. What should be in the boxes?

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin Freezing and Closing on: November 03, 2019, 04:09:56 PM
Hello, I am using a Mac Book Pro (2015). I am connected to an external hard drive running Bitcoin Core. Everything runs fine until I click or even hover mouse over file. Any idea why it's freezing. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

I'm also trying to run a full bitcoin node. Right now the software is opened and it's downloaded all the blocks the I know of. When I go to peers it says I have 8 connections. The memory pool is keeping track of transactions and memory usage. When I go to bitnodes and use my ip address it says i'm not connected. I've checked and the peers i'm connected to do show up on bitcodes as connect. What do I need to do so mine is considered connected?

Are there markings on the cable? They ship with a 30V cable normally (afaik - that'll affect baud if it's lower) also how far are you through the sync?

I think my old laptop (running a pentium processor lol) manages to get 0.4%/hr but I put the harddrive in it and ran a linux os from it. It's possible the seagate drives are slower now (espeically if it's not slimtype) have you tried opening it (if not don't do it it'll void the warrenty) but if you have it might give us more info.

The markings on the cable is ss with a usb symbol on both sides of the cable. My current progress is 62.88%. Earlier today My progress increase per hour went to 1.79%. It's currently running 0.04%/hr.

I Have backed up up my computer to this same hard drive once before. To back up 210 gb it took several hours with time machine. I don't remember how many. might have been 4 could have been 8. I'd rather not open the hard drive. I just hope this isn't a problem after i've synced to the network.

Edit: Looking at my activity monitor. It seems to run Bitcoin Core about 5%-10%

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
memory 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3

Progress increase per hour right now is 0.14%

Actually for some reason the download is super slow! I tested my internet speed. It was about 120mbps down and upload. here are the specs on my hard drive. Here are the specs. SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port (required for USB 3.0 transfer speeds or backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports at USB 2.0 transfer speeds)2
Seagate Game Drive for Xbox portable HDD 18-inch (45.72cm) USB 3.0 cable.

My download for Bitcoin Core has been running for over 50 hours. Do you know how I could speed that up? I have turned off automatic sleep.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: "Cannot write to data directory '/Volumes/Blockchain'; check permissions." on: October 29, 2019, 11:48:50 PM
I think I figured it out. bitcoin core is starting. "verifying blocks press q to shut down 16%" I was going to the permissions on bitcoin core. I needed to be going to my external hard drive permissions. Which is super obvious but I wasn't thinking very well...

Thanks for the help!

Assuming it worked before and you didn't uninstall the drivers you need for the seagate drives on mac, can you tell your drive is connected and can you access that folder in your file explorer?

It was downloading and was at 50%. I downloaded bitcoin core from bitcoin.org to my external hard drive. As of my knowledge I did not uninstall anything. I started the download and left it. I've used my computer since the download started but I didn't mess with bitcoin core or my hard drive. I've opened the hard drive. The only thing on it is bitcoin core and the files that came with it. When you say file explorer do you mean like the finder on my mac? I can access the drive to click on where it has the option to move bitcoin core to applications.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / "Cannot write to data directory '/Volumes/Blockchain'; check permissions." on: October 29, 2019, 11:10:49 PM
I was downloading bitcoin core onto my external hard drive.  My external hard drive was ejected. When I tried to open bitcoin core back up from my hard drive I get this error "Cannot write to data directory '/Volumes/Blockchain'; check permissions." I'm assuming somehow I need to give permission to open it with some type of administration password or something? I'm not sure how to do that or even if that's what I need to be looking for. I'm using a mac book pro. External hard drive is an Xbox seagate 4tb hard drive.

Please help thanks!
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Downloading Bitcoin Network Software on: October 29, 2019, 04:07:46 AM
Pooya explained it best Thank you!

"well in order to do anything on your computer you first need a computer program that can do that thing for you."
Those websites that offer a downloadable version of the bitcoin network are just simplified process? Basically built around to easily onboard the bitcoin network? For me to access the network without using others simplified version. I would have to write the code myself and access the network manually? Which would I'm assuming be very difficult?

I think I get what you guys mean. The more I think I know about the bitcoin network the more I realize I know very little. It's like a show. It starts off simple. Then by the end of it it's just chaotic with so many strings attached to everything that is happening.
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Downloading Bitcoin Network Software on: October 29, 2019, 03:41:25 AM
You can always use GitHub. No need for Bitcoin.org

https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/releases

I want to know how to connect to the bitcoin network without using someones website. Not that I don't trust websites. Websites can be tampered with. I want to know how to go straight to the source.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Downloading Bitcoin Network Software on: October 29, 2019, 03:33:33 AM
you are pointed to a website like bitcoin.org because it is a good source for reading all the basic information you need as a beginner in one place and it is "correct" information unlike many of other sites that contain misleading stuff. and you do NOT download the blockchain there, you only find links to different software that are open source and are created to let you connect to the network.

what is this "network"? it is every computer anywhere in the world that has the blockchain and is connecting to others and communicating with them. this computer is called a node. you connect to these nodes and download the blockchain, transactions in the mempool, new blocks, broadcast your new transactions to them which they propagate by sending to others,...

How can I connect to the nodes and download the blockchain without going through something like bitcoin.org?
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Downloading Bitcoin Network Software on: October 29, 2019, 03:23:30 AM
This may be weird because I don't understand how everything works. Ill try to explain the best I can.

I've heard that you can't just shut the bitcoin network down. So many connections to the network from around the world constantly keeping up with he same data and every 10 minutes a new block occurs. If I were to go download the blockchain. Everything seems to point toward Bitcoin.org. Let's say for some off the wall reason the websites that have a place to download the bitcoin blockchain were not there. How Would I go about downloading the software onto my computer and running a full node?
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Downloading Bitcoin Core onto Mac Book Pro External Hard Drive on: October 27, 2019, 08:12:35 PM
This may not be helpful to most people that have already been running bitcoin core. I erased my external hard drive. Deleted everything I could find that involved bitcoin core. I restarted the whole process. It's currently downloading onto the external hard drive.

Thank you guys for responding. I'm very newbie when it comes to stuff like this. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your day or night.
