1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: March 10, 2021, 10:13:45 PM
hi !  Smiley

i am new to monero, but i have some experience with bitcoin core and bitcoin cash. Grin

i have found a list of app wallets on the official website ( getmonero.org/downloads/ ), ok good !

i plan to generate an address / viewkey / spendkey, with moneroaddress.org.

then i plan to store the address / viewkey / spendkey in a txt file, compressed in a password protected 7z archive (AES-256)

then i plan to use the mymonero app wallet (android) to manage the address (to receive / send xmr)

( i  do a similar approach for my btc addresses / coins, and for my bch addresses / coins, and no problem until now (fingers crossed Tongue) )

a few questions, please :

Q1) is the generator on moneroaddress.org trustworthy / reliable ?
answer : apparently yes because recommended on the official website...

Q2) is the mymonero app wallet (android) trustworthy / reliable ?
answer : apparently yes because recommended on the official website...

Q3) who funds the developments of the monero protocol ? are the developpers / contributors only working for the "cause" ?
answer : apparently by donations and crowfunding...

any others advices you may have for a beginner ?

thanks !

thanks for the answers / suggestions, i am going to test electron cash wallet !
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / is electron cash a trustworthy / safe / reliable bch wallet ? on: August 24, 2020, 08:25:46 PM
hi ! Smiley

i already own a few btc, i store them partly on coinbase and partly on the electrum wallet (static address/key)

(thanks for the previous advices of some of you btw)

i am also interested in bch, i want to partly store them on coinbase and partly on a wallet which allows the use of a static address/key, and i wonder if electron cash (apparently a clone of electrum but for bch) is trustworthy / safe / reliable ?
electroncash.org

i have seen that there is an apk (android version) on the official website, but also a version on the google app store (by "jonald fyookball" )

can some of you confirm that this wallet is trustworthy / safe / reliable ? (like electrum seems to be...)

thanks!

you say electrum is no good, since it took you 1000€ to send 10.000€, while coinbase only costed 2€ to send 10.000€... What you don't realise is that it wasn't electrum's fault, the cost was so high because you collected 1.000.000 copper coins.
what Huh why are you talking about 2 different money kinds ? i just tried to send btc in both cases same amount (0.001btc), to the same address, at same day / time

Quote
i'm 99% sure that electrum was used to collect very small unspent outputs. When you try to spend those unspent outputs, each unspent output will make the transaction bigger, and so it'll increase your fee.
On the other hand, coinbase will probably work with one unspent output, resulting in a very small transaction and a very small fee.
no idea what this means... i just want to transfer btc from one address to another address...

I strongly believe that you don't modify options in your Electrum wallet and you sent your bitcoin out with default option and automatically suggested fee that is higher than what you can do to save fees (if what you care about are fees, not speed and waiting time for your transactions).
i have used the ETA option lowest priority, but i see the STATIC option where i can set a specific sat/byte
i will test this, thanks !

@lucius :

There is nothing problematic in the fees we pay to transfer BTC, the problem is the fact that some users use something they do not fully understand.
well i have read all the answers and will try to understand how to set a more appropriate sat/byte depending on network condition, but be sure that most people won't do that, if they have a similar issue they will just complain and not use btc anymore...

Quote
not to solve problems that exist with the speed of confirmations or the amount of fees. If that were the case then everyone would use BCH, and we wouldn’t call it shitcoin today.
it is not popular because newcomers go to bitcoin core first, and don't try to understand why btc and bch are separate versions of bitcoin. and many are here to invest money to gain more, they don't care about the usefulness / greater cause. (personally i like both, but i don't fully trust any, but i don't trust my bank or the central bank, so here i am...  Undecided Grin )

anyway, i just did an experiment  to transfer the same amount (0.001btc) to the same address, at the same day / time (right now!)
0.001btc = 80eur (assuming 1btc = 8000eur)

with coinbase :
fee = 0.00002404btc = 0.19eur

with electrum wallet (android) :
EPA, lowest priority, fee = 0.00023188btc = 1.85eur (yesterday evening, for same amount sent the fee was 0.00339709btc = 27.17EUR...)
STATIC, 10sat/byte, fee = 0.0000374btc = 0.29eur

with bitcoincore wallet (android) :
fee = 0.000956btc = 7.64eur (yesterday evening, for same amount sent the fee was 0.000056btc = 0.44eur...)

well this is annoying... i forsee how mass people won't use btc with such variable (sometimes high!) fees...

anyway i will take a look at the threads you suggested, thanks!

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: high fees to send with electrum wallet (compared to on coinbase) on: July 16, 2020, 07:57:10 PM
i have set the transaction to low priority...

what i don't understand is that i have sent the same amount to another wallet a few days ago and the minimum sat per byte was 1.4 but in this case the minimum sate per byte was much higher (for the exact same amount!) (right now the minimum sat per byte is 34.6)

Quote
centralized wallets might cover part of the fee for you out of their own pocket, others might overcharge you (fee-wise) depending on how their income model is...
yes i wondered about that, some wallet apps may give priority to their miners friends, so that they can charge more in fees. (only a supposition)

anyway, that's not good and usable (27eur to send 8eur...), i better understand why bitcoin cash was created !

does somebody know if this btc wallet is trustworthy / reliable : https://bitcoin.org/en/wallets/mobile/android/bitcoinwallet/?step=5&platform=android&user=experienced&important=control,transparency,fees&features=legacy_addresses

thanks,
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / high fees to send with electrum wallet (compared to on coinbase) on: July 16, 2020, 07:38:16 PM
hi ! Smiley

i don't understand something, and i find it quite bad for bitcoin reputation... or for the electrum wallet reputation...

the same day, the same hour, if i try to send the same amount (0.001btc) to the same btc address, using the electrum wallet or using the coinbase exchange, the fees are quite low with the coinbase exchange, but really high with the electrum wallet !

see :

to send 0.001btc to 19ZJTcMRvwd8LzFSebV22bBz57NNTsC22V

with electrum wallet, with min cost per byte, fee = 0.00339709btc = 27.17EUR

with coinbase exchange, fee = 0.00002066btc = 0.16EUR

why ?

what can i do to decrease the sending fee  ? this is not good !

alternatively, can you recommend another wallet (for android) where i can set the address+privatekey (like with electrum wallet) and also choose the fee (less than with electrum wallet)

thanks,
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: some questions about bitcoin address and private key and wallets on: May 14, 2020, 08:02:00 PM
so, tuesday i updated my coinbase exchange app, and guess what ? i can't send money anymore (so i will have to find/reinstall the previous version that worked well)

this is exactly why i prefer to know and keep the address/privatekey myself and not rely on any third party app !

imagine if there is an economic crisis (coming!) and some of these companies are in difficulties (financialy because of taxes or legaly because of governements facism) well not the best idea to have to rely on one specific app isn't it ?

anyway !

Wow, hold up. What third-party app asked your private key?
none so far, but i suppose that i will have to type it somewhere in order to send coins to another address ? (to prove that i am the "owner" of this address) (with electrum, for example), i have not tried yet, but i will do it with a test address with small amounts, don't worry...
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: some questions about bitcoin address and private key and wallets on: May 13, 2020, 09:39:06 PM
no, it is ok, all your explanations reassured me. Smiley

i did not understand how an account (address) could stay mine/private, if i had to give my privatekey to a third party (app) in order to send coins to another address, but the open source and several (many) developpers aspects, reassured me.

and i also don't want to rely on complicated stuff like several steps authenfication or on devices or third party apps which may disappear in the future, but electrum seems old and robust, so i like it so far...

Quote
then save them on a very-strong password protected rar and then keep that rar on several devices (like your pc, your laptop, your phone, your usb)
i do a similar approach, except instead of encryption i use a combination of obfuscation (of the address+privatekey) and hiding (in files Wink )

thanks !

The number of available private keys is slightly less than 2^256 while the number of addresses is 2^160
ok i see Grin

a good video about that : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZloHVKk7DHk&t=4m27s

but still, with luck somebody could generate an address/privatekey already used by somebody else ?  Undecided if yes it would be safer to store small amounts in several addresses rather than a big amount in only one address....

Quote
Don't you any website to generate private keys.
Use a proper wallet (desktop-, mobile- or hardware wallet) to generate keys / store your funds.
i don't want to rely on an hardware wallet because of long term reliability and to stay discreet, but i like the idea of only saving the address/privatekey on several usb disks (in an obfuscated way, of course Wink ), and being able to receive/send coins using a smartphone app or laptop app on another address (with low amount)...
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: some questions about bitcoin address and private key and wallets on: May 13, 2020, 10:05:19 AM
hi!  Smiley

thanks for your explanations.

i have installed electrum on android and windows, it seems to work well.  Cheesy

a few more questions (please) :

Q2)when i generate a new address/privatekey on bitaddress.org, how do i know that it is not an already a used address ?

Q3)if i use electrum to send some (fractions of) bitcoins to another address, how do i know that my privatekey will not be stolen and used by somebody else ? (i suppose that i have to trust the developers of electrum and the open source aspect ?)

Q4)so a safe approach would be to have several addresses with small amounts rather than only one address with a big amount ? what do you think ? (in case a privatekey is stolen)

thanks!
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / some questions about bitcoin address and private key and wallets on: May 12, 2020, 10:01:03 PM
hi, Smiley

i am new to bitcoin, but i have some understanding about computers and programming...
for now i have an account on coinbase exchange to buy bitcoins
and i have a bitcoin address + privatekey generated on bitaddress.org

since january 2020 i have bought small amounts of bitcoins and transfered a little on my bitcoin address.

and nothing has been stolen so far, good Grin

no i realize that the bitcoins on the coinbase exchange account are not really mine, in the sense that i don't own the private key for this address.

so my idea was to transfer most of the bitcoins on my own address (generated on bitaddress) (i store the address + privatekey offline)

however, if i do that, then how will i be able to then send bitcoins to others addresses ?

from what i understand :
i could use an hardware wallet, but if it breaks, or if i lose the device, then i lose the bitcoins ?
or
i could use a wallet app (on a smartphone), but if the app bugs or if i lose the smartphone, then i lose the bitcoins ?
or
i could use a wallet software (on a laptop), but if the app bugs or if i lose the laptop, then i lose the bitcoins ?^

hence why i have chosen to simply use a paper wallet (or rather just keep the address number and privatekey number, offline)

but then, how can i send some bitcoins to others addresses ? without having my privatekey stolen ? i don't understand that...

what i am interested in is how to securely store bitcoins, offline, but also be able to send some of these bitcoins, when needed...

(please don't warn me about the necessity to generate a bitcoin address / privatekey offline on a newly installed os, i already understand the issue)

thanks for the advices / tips
