No matter which drugs our government and Federal Reserve offer the financial system, business cycles just happen. Recessions act to clear the financial system of the excesses and lead to reallocation of capital.

Sure, we saved Bank of America and Citibank, but Dwolla, Square, Angellist, Strype, Bitcoin and many thousands of startups in the financial sector were created by entrepreneurs and investors fed up with a broken system.

While some are harkening to gold as a hedge against the breakdown of banknotes, another currency alternative, Bitcoin, just received a big leg up this week when a major software vendor started accepting payment using decentralized digital coins.

WordPress.com, the company that leads development of the world's most popular blogging system on the internet, announced on Thursday that it is now accepting payments with Bitcoins, probably the largest company to do so.

For the last year, Bitcoin has been kind of like the kid who moves to a new town right in the middle of high school. Sitting alone at lunch. Quiet, but proud. Widely suspected of dealing drugs. He doesn't have any friends and he's not sure he wants them.
Well, that's all over, because this week Bitcoin started hanging out with one of the most popular kids in school.

WordPress, the most widely used blogging platform on the Internet, announced last night that it now accepts Bitcoin payments.

...

Alas, it must be said that while it's getting easier to get rid of your Bitcoins, it's still not getting any easier to buy into the currency. It's the cryptocurrency catch-22.

Bitcoin: Because the internet needed a currency.

I like this.

I feel the time will soon come where I'll just say Bitcoin is 'backed' by the Internet when I come across someone who insists a currency has to be 'backed' by something/someone.

“Hard power” -- military and economic might -- is dispersed across more countries than at any period since 1815, curbing the dominance of the U.S. and China and throwing up challenges for economic stability, according to a study by SLJ Macro Partners LLP, a London-based hedge fund.

As if central banks don’t have enough to worry about, along come “virtual currencies.”
Technological developments and the increased use of the Internet have spawned digital communities in which consumers can transact using money peculiar to those worlds. Examples include Bitcoin, which can be used to trade goods and services on some websites, and Linden Dollars, which feature in the online game Second Life.
While these currencies provide no unit of account or physical manifestation with legal tender status, the European Central Bank says the increased use of them bears monitoring by policy makers.

As such, Automattic has decided to accept the online currency through Bitpay.com, although it has opted to forgo the "confirmations" process. This traditional manner of establishing a reputation for trustworthiness among other Bitcoin users relies on other users recording transactions and sharing the news with other users.

...
In June 2011, the currency attracted the attention of Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, highlighting the role Bitcoin plays in an online marketplace known as "Silk Road," which allows customers to buy illegal drugs.

The platform has also been the target of frequent thefts, hacks, and scams, with more than 290,000 BTC lost in 10 heists since June 2011, according to tallies on the BitcoinTalk forum. Users of Bitcoin exchange Bitcoinica filed a complaint in August against the trading platform in a San Francisco court, alleging the loss of $460,000 due to poor security and deceitful practices.

Someone else on that site responds with an interesting counteropinion:
Quote
Simon Palombi overstates the threat from terrorist's use of Bitcoin. First, a key aspect of Bitcoin is that every single transaction made using the currency is held by every single user of the currency in what is known as the block chain. While the user and the unique address are disassociated if the correct precautions are taken, network maps based on transactions can be developed. Even if people are careful, their associates and the people they transfer money to may not be. This network map will be a big intelligence boost and large Bitcoin transfers will attract attention.

Second, for Bitcoin to have real world effects, it must cross into the physical somewhere and this is where traditional intelligence gathering, law enforcement and customs will continue to play a key role. Just as drugs are seized where some other currency is used, so too will drugs and weapons be seized if Bitcoin is used. Australian police have already made arrests where Bitcoin was used and the market place was on the anonymous TOR network.

Bitcoin poses challenges that need to be addressed but it may not be the game changer that the author implies.

If/when amazon accepts Bitcoin Paypal is finished.

And it wouldn't surprise me to see Amazon stand up to legal challenges either over accepting Bitcoin. I gained a lot of respect for Amazon after they boycotted states that instituted an online sales tax. California even backed down after they did that. It was awesome!

I doubt it will happen any time soon. Amazon was very quick to deny wikileaks any service on dubious 'terms of service' claims.

The European Central Bank recently published an official study into digital online currencies, the first by a major financial institution.

Alarmingly, the report tends to play down the suitability of these currencies to terrorist groups. In particular, the report passes off legitimate concerns, such as those raised two years ago by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), as 'negative press'. Indeed, the report fails to account for the development and increasing market for the digital online currency known as Bitcoin, and not only its potential for use to launder money (raised by FATF), but the access it provides to weapons available via online black markets.
...

However, while governments, such the US and Australia are aware of Bitcoin's potential to circumvent counter-terrorist financing measures, they have not moved fast enough to amend legislation and develop a solution. Australian counter-terrorist legislation is currently ineffective against Bitcoin because it defines electronic money as digitally stored money, either electronically or magnetically, that is backed by precious metals, or gold bullion.

WordPress, the popular blogging platform / content management system is expanding its payment options for upgrades like going ad-free. Beginning today, users around the world will be able to pay with Bitcoin — the unregulated, decentralized digital currency built on cryptography. Explaining its decision, the company noted that PayPal currently blocks access from over 60 countries, and that many credit card companies have similar restrictions, whether because of politics, fraud, or other reasons.

WordPress says that its Bitcoin payments will be handled by BitPay.com and that there is no need to wait for confirmation since the transaction risk is “already acceptably low.” And while Bitcoin famously doesn’t permit refunds (because of the possibility for fraud), WordPress says it will still honor its refund policy, working with BitPay to get unhappy customers their money back.
