"Australia's anti-money laundering watchdog AUSTRAC believes that money laundering using digital currencies such as Bitcoin and virtual worlds (such as MMOs) are possible 'emerging threats'. The organisation's latest 'typologies' report earmarked virtual worlds and Bitcoin as two areas that the agency would be monitoring, although at this stage no-one seems sure to what extent they are being used (and some of the issues with Bitcoin, such as the fluctuating exchange rate and limited options for transferring value to real-world currencies through conversion to non-digital currencies or using it to pay for goods or services, mean that it's unlikely it's being used for money laundering on a significant scale)."

Trust in bitcoin has taken some serious knocks recently. As its use has increased it has drawn the attention of cyber criminals. Apart from the two direct hacks against Bitcoinica (which involved the theft of 43,554 bitcoins in March and 18,547 bitcoins in May), this monthís Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) release will include removal for the Win32/Bafruz trojan.

In many ways, Bitcoin is one of the best known and best-remaining and most popular forms of alternative currency on the market. It may still suffer from being relatively unknown in circles outside of particular modes of thought, but itís constantly resurfaces in the popular media, itís appeared in some forms on TV shows, and even appears in the news. It has all the hallmarks of a project that may just reach the goal of becoming a widespread technology.

Ajankohtainen kakkonen is a Finnish current affairs television series broadcast in Finland on TV2 since 1969.

This is in Finnish - so I don't know what they're saying, but it shows various well-known bitcoin services such as bitpay, easywallet etc - and snippets of English bitcoin videos.

Financial watchdog AUSTRAC says that money laundering using virtual worlds, such as MMOs, and digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, are emerging threats

...
Bitcoin is by far the best known purely digital currency.

...
"AUSTRAC is aware that digital currencies, such as those offered by Bitcoin, may become more attractive to criminal groups, particularly in response to tighter regulation and monitoring of established or traditional financial channels by both government and the traditional financial service providers themselves," Schmidt says.

As a result, AUSTRAC and other law enforcement organisations "actively monitor developments across the range of digital currencies currently available in Australia".

...
Existing money laundering legislation can generally be used to prosecute the use of virtual worlds and digital currencies for financial crimes, Dyson says. "We have legislation in relation to the offences being committed online; of course the proceeds that theyíre after is the reward at the end... Current anti-laundering legislation could cover it if the objective is to gain legitimate forms of currency at the end."
...

That's an interesting 'if'.  In future, the objective may be to spend directly in BTC.
The implication that bitcoin might not be a 'legitimate form of currency' sounds premature too. It may not be considered a 'currency' - but what is illegitimate about it?

915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / US Computer Emergency Readiness Team / nist.gov publish 2year old bitcoin vulns on: August 14, 2012, 12:03:26 AM

http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2010-5139

which references the discussion thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=822.0

Why now?  Is it standard practice to release such old warnings?

With wording like:
"allows remote attackers to bypass intended economic restrictions and create many bitcoins via a crafted Bitcoin transaction."
and
"Impact Type:Allows unauthorized disclosure of information; Allows unauthorized modification; Allows disruption of service"

It's potentially damaging If people don't notice how old it is I would have thought.

Not exactly a 'press hit' - but given the wording "allows remote attackers to bypass intended economic restrictions and create many bitcoins via a crafted Bitcoin transaction" - I wouldn't be surprised if this generates some press.

bitcoin -- bitcoind
Integer overflow in wxBitcoin and bitcoind before 0.3.11 allows remote attackers to bypass intended economic restrictions and create many bitcoins via a crafted Bitcoin transaction.    2012-08-06   7.5   CVE-2010-5139

bitcoin -- bitcoind
wxBitcoin and bitcoind before 0.3.5 do not properly handle script opcodes in Bitcoin transactions, which allows remote attackers to spend bitcoins owned by other users via unspecified vectors.    2012-08-06   7.5   CVE-2010-5141

bitcoin -- bitcoin-qt
Bitcoin-Qt 0.5.0.x before 0.5.0.5; 0.5.1.x, 0.5.2.x, and 0.5.3.x before 0.5.3.1; and 0.6.x before 0.6.0rc4 on Windows does not use MinGW multithread-safe exception handling, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted Bitcoin protocol messages.    2012-08-06   7.5   CVE-2012-1910

919  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Jim Cramer - "I endorsed Bitcoin in The Good Wife, what more can you ask!?" on: August 11, 2012, 01:06:16 AM
A recent tweet from Jim Cramer of 'mad money' fame (and now famous in Bitcoin circles for his cameo on 'The Good Wife' - 'Finding Mr Bitcoin' episode):

"I endorsed Bitcoin in The Good Wife, what more can you ask!?"

Well.. in the show, I recall him basically just saying it wasn't a currency, which didn't sound quite like an endorsement  - but good to hear him say he 'endorsed' it.
