521  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Ripple is Superior to Bitcoin... on: May 10, 2013, 09:40:16 PM
I apologize if someone has pointed this out already, but...OP, you do realize that Bitcoin and Ripple are entirely different virtual transaction utilities, right? Saying one is better than the other is like trying to explain why apples are better than oranges.

Bitcoin, brilliant in design, sidesteps the need for most of this trust.

Correct, for the most part anyway. Bitcoin was designed as an anonymous P2P system. Anything where a real world identity is unknown or otherwise obfuscated has a greater likelihood for a compromise of trust.

Bitcoin's base value comes from fanboys, folks willing to take a stand for their monetary ideology, but most importantly its usefulness in transactions that can't be done online for legal reasons or when a person would prefer not to reveal their identity.  Due to this base value, it has attracted speculators who have driven up its price way beyond its value based on its base uses.

Partially true. Bitcoin (as well as any niche item/product/tool) starts off as entirely "fanboy" based. As the virtual economy grows, and assuming it gathers attention along the way, so does the community around it. Growth in any financial area (whether commodities, currencies, company stock, etc) always attracts speculators...the same applies to Ripple. People are buying and selling XRP for BTC. Not sure if you knew this or not, but this is called speculation.

That said, in every day transactions, is it useful or practical for people to exchange their dollars (or other currency), pay 4% to move it to Bitinstant so they can get it into MTGOX, so that they can buy some Bitcoin (another 1/2 % fee), so that they can buy a pizza at their corner store?    I'm going to go out on a limb and say "no."

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but that scenario isn't intended for Bitcoin. However, if you change [a pizza] to [any non-perishable item] and [at their corner store] to [from anywhere in the world, and all anonymously], then I'd say "yes" it is worth it.

Opencoin, Inc., is smart in that they have printed up the currency in their instance of the pre-open source server almost like a stock issue. They have a certain number of shares that they are banking will increase in value, since xrp is the Bitcoin/gold in the Ripple system. They can hand out these "shares" like an IPO without the usual regulatory rigmorole and without having banks in between each transaction. Ingenious in my opinion. However, as mainly a transaction system, the value of the xrp will only increase and be worth something if Opencoin Inc. gains an early mover advantage in the market with their version of Ripple.

I think I have a better system, though it's along the same lines. Hear me out, I promise it's worth while:

What if we had sort of a paper currency..something we could hold in our hands and see with our own eyes? It would have to be distributed though, so I propose some sort of central agency that has all of the currency on reserve, and then from there they distribute it out to various nodes, which in turn come to us. It's an incredible "trust based" system, since trading the currency requires you to have an in-person interaction. In order to keep the currency flowing, we could do favors for each other (like mowing lawns, fixing cars, building computer systems, etc) and we would use this currency to compensate the person doing the work. If we get enough people to jump on this bandwagon, we could create an enormous economy seemingly overnight!

If they succeed then their xrp will be worth quite a bit, in my opinion.

Could be true. I happen to have a few XRP lying around not being used for anything...interested in buying?

Open-source, closed-source.  Who cares?

I actually cringed when I read this, and I can tell others did as well. I wasn't cringing so much at the statement, but more at the thought of you losing about 90% of any credibility you had  Undecided
522  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: [POLL] Should Butterfly Labs (BFL) get a Scammer tag? on: May 10, 2013, 07:48:51 PM
Did you actually pay in BTC, or just pay through BitPay? Cause if you actually paid with BTC, then yeah, you got fucked.

They're one in the same.

How buying a product from Butterfly Labs works:

Method #1: Paypal
Log on to Paypal >> Pay for the preorder through debit or credit >> BFL gets your cash

Method #2: Wire Transfer
Get bank info from BFL >> Contact your bank and send money to the account >> Wait a week or two >> BFL gets your cash

Method #3: Bitcoins
BFL sends you to BitPay >> BitPay calculates the cost in BTC >> Send BTC to BitPay >> BitPay instantly converts those coins to cash >> BFL gets your cash

The common theme here is that Butterfly labs doesn't deal in Bitcoins...
523  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BBQCoin Pump and Dump announcement on: May 10, 2013, 03:35:14 PM
In about 48-72 hours I will be pumping the hell out of BBQ Coin. I have about 940btc (Thanks to the dude who gave me the loan who will remain anonymous, you're getting an extra tip soon lol) and its ALL going to BBQCoin.

http://bter.com

My projection for BBQCoin should be around BTC.001-BTC.002 in 2-3 days from now. So if you guys wanna make some money go right ahead.

Just one note

If BTC drops below say 90$ within 24-48 hours, I will not be doing this.

Enjoy! I shall be the next fontas (Shoutout trollox).

May 10th 9:35pm EST.

Soo..uhh...how'd it go this morning? I see soooooo much has changed...
524  Economy / Auctions / Re: [3 days]: [BFL ASIC 60 GH/s Miner order] for low price with escrow on: May 10, 2013, 12:15:08 PM
Order 45847
#100024627

Also, looking at all this mistrust, I want to rise discount to 104 BTC:

Now bids must start from 34 BTC with 2 BTC increment.
Also I will rise escrow up to 55-75% (45-25% of price payed to me directly, and another part - after shipping, by escrow) - depends on winning price = (Price-34)/((138-34)/(75-55)) + 55 %
Or pay directly with 10% discount - 90% from winning price.

I'm not sure you know this..though I trust you're slowly figuring it out...but an order placed a month ago isn't worth nearly as much as you think it does. That said, what makes your Single so special that you value its starting bid at $4000? And don't say anything about your place in the queue because, frankly, you're pretty much at the end of it.

People want early orders...hell even ones placed near the end of 2012...not necessarily ones from March 21st, 2013.
525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoin and MoneyMakergroup.com Crowd ? - MLMs/HYIPs/Paid to Reads on: May 09, 2013, 11:58:46 PM
Ponzi schemes?  There are many legitimate MLM's out there, many which are multi million dollar companies.

Want to try and name some?

Other than that, I can't tell if you legitimately don't know what MLMs and HYIPs are..or if you're just trying to get a baseline before launching your own scheme...
526  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoin and MoneyMakergroup.com Crowd ? - MLMs/HYIPs/Paid to Reads on: May 09, 2013, 10:41:15 PM
Why hasn't this happened yet?

There's a lot of smart people in this community. Newbies looking to start Ponzi Schemes are generally quickly discovered and aren't well received...
527  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BBQCoin Pump and Dump announcement on: May 09, 2013, 07:01:55 PM
sound like he wishes to dump into any pump that 'we' actually create...

Ah, seems someone is finally catching on...
528  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Satoshi Dice -- Statistical Analysis on: May 08, 2013, 06:11:01 PM
I don't think so because the source of compulsive smoking and gambling is unhappiness, and the source of unhappiness is being abused in child raising. Since today an astonishing 90% of mothers in the West still spank their children, I think compulsive smoking and gambling is here to stay.

Bwhahahaha, I love random statistics! Did you know that 95% of all people who have "rational" in their username aren't really rational at all? I like to visit the Bureau of Made Up Statistics to get my credible information as well....

Euhm... so you debunk a statistic I quote with what exactly?

I will give you a source where I get this from:
http://fatherhood.hhs.gov/charting02/Parenting.htm

I'm not debunking your statistics, those seem fine. What I'm actually finding immense humor in is your "logical" process:
  • Compulsive smoking and gambling is caused by unhappiness.
  • Abuse is a source of unhappiness.
  • Spanking can be considered abuse.
  • Therefore: Spanking = unhappiness = compulsive smoking and gambling.

To compare:
  • Large ships are made of metal.
  • The hammer in my toolbox is also made of metal.
  • Therefore: Hammer = Large ship

Good god this is off topic...

531  Economy / Securities / Re: S.DICE - SatoshiDICE 100% Dividend-Paying Asset on MPEx on: May 04, 2013, 02:18:24 PM
Practically, any LTC, TRC, NMC, FTC, etc. earnings could either be used to cover costs or be converted to BTC at market rates at BTC-e, and soon MtGox for LTC, for dividends. Really seems like a pretty simple decision depending on what the cost of implementation and maintenance would be.

To me, Bitcoins are like paper bills and Litecoins are the cents. I'm more willing to gamble with Litecoins because I know they don't hold nearly the same value as Bitcoin.

That said, what would happen if Litecoin was added to SD? EV would have thousands of Litecoins [profit] by the end of the month...and although that sounds nice, it's not if he only wants Bitcoin in the end. Converting mass quantities of LTC or any of the smaller alt-coins could pose two problems: A) People could bid up the exchange rate when they suspect EV is trying to convert to BTC, which cuts in on the final profit obviously, or B) constantly converting thousands of coins at once to BTC would kill the alt-coins value.

Either way, it's a pain in the ass. It's much easier, and vastly more financially stable, to stick with one coin. Obviously if EV intended to hold and spend LTC as we do with BTC, then this may be different...but as far as I can tell most people use LTC as a means to convert to BTC.
532  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Satoshi Dice -- Statistical Analysis on: May 03, 2013, 07:24:13 PM
Stop the madness!

Technically we're still well above the expected 1.9% edge, and not to mention December through February were fantastic months financially. At some point math will win and we'll dip down to match what's expected.
533  Economy / Securities / Re: S.DICE - SatoshiDICE 100% Dividend-Paying Asset on MPEx on: May 03, 2013, 04:40:36 PM
No, for THIS month, we don't know if the expenses are contracted in USD terms or BTC. If for example BTC rise to $1000, then monthly profit will probably fall to 500 BTC or less range, how would you like half of shareholder profits are eaten up in "expense"? Being a S.Dice shareholder was not particularly rewarding recently, wouldn't you agree? your S.Dice share price is 50% of 2 month ago.

Some expenses are based on USD value. Others could be a fixed rate, or a percentage of profit (couldn't find any details on them, but then again I didn't look too hard). That's up to Erik to decide and fill us in on (not disagreeing with you on that).

And I know it hasn't been rewarding (at least long term), and as the price in BTC increased I figured that may be the case in the end. I sold near the peak and bought again when it was quite low...and then sold again recently. Profit-wise, I'm fine...and I'm thankful I didn't buy and hold (even though, in a financial sense, I'd very much like to).
534  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: [POLL] Should Butterfly Labs (BFL) get a Scammer tag? on: May 03, 2013, 04:21:05 PM
I voted yes after receiving a refund of about 6BTC when I wrote them a mail asking back the 70BTC i paid back in September based on their lies at that time (I was stupid enough to provide a btc address in this mail).

So, I missed the opportunity to sell my 70BTC with good profit during the bubble and I dont have an order anymore. They refuse to reinstate the order now as well.

Soooo...let me get this straight...you paid BTC70 in September (valued at, what, $700-840 or so..assuming $10-12 a coin)...and you hate BFL because they didn't give you $17,000+ back during the bubble?

Are you retarded?
535  Economy / Securities / Re: S.DICE - SatoshiDICE 100% Dividend-Paying Asset on MPEx on: May 03, 2013, 04:07:09 PM
Disclosure: Just a joke, but we need more transparency and detail about these "expenses" and they seem to be pretty high. I own more than 30k shares in S.Dice

Disclosure: Those expenses account for less than 5% of gross profit for the month...though transparency would be nice, EV has no obligation to provide such information. I owned more than 20k shares in S.Dice...if you don't like the way the company is run, sell your shares.

536  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs just sent me an update e-mail! on: May 01, 2013, 09:36:51 PM
Got my email! Ah, the news I've (and thousands of others) have waited ages for..

537  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Estimated hashrate of the NSA? on: April 29, 2013, 12:58:57 AM
gosh, the NSA? They have so many computers and secret algorithms, I bet they could do like a billion hashes a second!

You mean..1 GH/s?
538  Economy / Securities / Re: S.DICE - SatoshiDICE 100% Dividend-Paying Asset on MPEx on: April 26, 2013, 09:48:25 PM
What frustrates me, is that as a BUSINESS, evorhees ought to know by know that transparency, or some semblance of transparency is really great, particularly for shareholders.

EV has been here long enough, so I presume this is something he understand well.

With that in mind, my guess is that there's something going on that a) consumes 100% of his time, b) could be detrimental to the business if brought to the public's attention without first being resolved, c) received advice to temporarily cease communication (such as what happened with Nefario and GLBSE), or d) a mix of any or all of these situations (as well as others I may have missed).
