43  Bitcoin / Hardware / Standardized Mining Case Design (Open Source; DIY) on: October 24, 2013, 02:11:14 AM
It has been amazing the amount of engineering talent that has surfaced over the last
several months to produce Bitcoin mining hardware. Personally, it's been a little
frustrating to see things move so fast that most part-time/hobbyist engineers like myself
are forced to the sidelines. Still very anxious to contribute something that doesn't
become meaningless before it is finished. I'm convinced that an "open source Hardware
enclosure standard" could be a first great step in creating synergy between the efforts
of the many engineers that frequent this forum and be useful for the many years to
come.

Background:
At this point there appears to be emerging two main mining hardware approaches:
        1) A few large expensive packages that milks the silicon die for every last hash
it's worth. (e.g. KNC, BFL, Cointerra, etc.)
        2) Many small and cheap packages that run the silicon die near peak energy
efficiency. (e.g Bitfury, Coincraft, Avalon, etc.)

The first approach requires alot more consideration for heat dissipation which may add
additional cost. A GPU form factor makes much since on many levels IMO because of all
the supporting hardware and enclosures readily available. See Mr Teal's example:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=304250.0

The large array of efficient ASICs has the potential of becoming the long term winning
solution IMO especially for those that live in hotter climates with expensive electricity.
https://bitmine.ch summed it up perfectly:
"Do you think that fitting the highest possible number of hashing units into a single,
500+ GH/s silicon die is the best solution? We don’t. Real life experience have shown
that the highest performance, lowest total system cost and greatest scalability are
achieved by large arrays of small and cool ASICs...
"
https://bitmine.ch/?page_id=863

This case enclosure standard will cater more to the "large arrays of small and cool ASICs".

Proposal/Thoughts:
4U 19" Wide x 19" to 24" Depth. What is a good depth?
ATX12V PSU over a server PSU. Thoughts?
Port holes for a RPi and/or a Black Beagle Bone
3 fans in the front.

Please help make this a success. I'll be glad to work with anyone interested. For This
project, I plan to just help coordinate the efforts of those willing to get involved.
Thanks.

Some Case Examples:

Very interesting!

Any news about the project! Huh

need a few more chips.
Been a little overwhelmed how fast everything is happening in the bitcoin world.

Does anyone have a few chips I could purchase from them?

Thanks.
45  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Gauging interest for a modular 3U server case for BitFury miners on: September 07, 2013, 03:29:14 AM
This is great. I've been thinking about something similar the last few days.

What if there was a back plane PCB engineered that had mounting holes? Could
you stand the miner up and fit three of them together without fans in between? At least
that is what I was envisioning.

thanks.

Huh  Sorry, but I don't understand.  Please post a sketch.

Just goggled 3u Server case and realized that you would probably not be able to stand it up.
Laying the miner sideways doesn't seem to provide good airflow.

I am interested in a case where you can fit 3 Bitfurry Miners though. 3u server chases wouldn't be suitable.

I'm also working on an open-air tray with a width to fit a 19-inch rack and a depth to hold 3 rigs (and a PSU).

Awesome! Can't wait.

48  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Selling ButteryFly Single (60GH/s) Ordered mid-July'12 on: August 17, 2013, 02:36:30 AM
100 BTC?  I'll sell one in hand for 95 BTC.   Grin

/threadjack

I'll do 94 BTC.....Jacking Threads is fun.

Any Starting bids out there?
49  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] - BFL BitForce 53+ GH/s - Failing Action: 95BTC on: July 15, 2013, 10:03:11 PM
OK, So bitmit is down at a very critical time for me; so,
back to selling a few miners directly here in the forums.

If escrow is desired, buyer pays for escrow service. I would like to start my own escrow so if anyone
wants to chance it with me it would be greatly appreciated to start building a
more well known reputation.

As previously mentioned, I would really like to find out what the market rate is for
these; so, back to failing action style. I'll update the thread daily with new lower
prices when there is no market (PM messaging) activity going on.

Currently up for sale: 53+ GH/s BFL BitForce miner

Willing to Ship World Wide.
Buyer pays for shipping for anything over $100.
No returns accepted.
Willing to help with any reasonable situation.

Thanks,
      Allten

Well, it sure seams the first one I sold was a steal for the buyer
Potentially another good deal on the this one:

Bid Starts at 90BTC

Ships Tuesday Morning!

Had several inquiries through email. Didn't expect so much demand.

Posted a listing on bitmit starting at $7K.
https://www.bitmit.net/en/item/45333-59-gh-s-bitforce-single-shipping-now

I think people are overbidding on bitmit to jack the market and then they never pay.

If you make a bid and are outbid, I will do second chance offers 'till someone takes it.

I would really like to find out where an honest price for these are at.
I'll will post the final sell price here for everyone's information.

thanks,
   Allten

Hey Alten,

How is the box for heat? Any issues? Uptime etc?

No Issues. It's been really good to me. It is a solid product.
Wish I had my kilowatt meter, but the exhaust air is not much
warmer than the air going in. i think that is a good sign.

Finally put it back up for sale like I said I would other than its a week later:

I reported that auction a couple days ago.. I'm sure others did as well..  Wink

Thanks! You did me a big favor. You really did.
55  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Recieved 50GH BFL Single Today! on: June 20, 2013, 09:35:46 PM
I think it should be Very Well Noted, that the First BFL Single, Is being put up for sale Immediatley.
Showing what I believe to be Doubt in the product, my bet is that the seller is worried about the lifetime of the product
I have yet to see a running BFL asic that doesnt put out HW errors

Here, let me help cure the speculation.

The hardware is really nice. BFL took a long time to ensure we get a good high quality product.
I do admit though that I would have happily taken any POS months ago that worked vs. a solid product today.
I do understand that wasn't an option for them and is part of the reason I'm glad they are selling their chips.

My rationale behind selling: Getting my long awaited miner didn't help with the frustration and anxiety dealing with
the over promising and under delivering from BFL as a customer.
I would rather see the reminder of that pain gone at the moment. Also, I will be over my power budget of a 1000 Watts
after the others come so a few will have to go eventually. It's currently summer where I live with 110+F weather and increased electricity for
the summer rates. Don't forget the house cooling costs. And most importantly, I believe it will sell for more
than its potential ROI at this point because there are those that gotta have the hardware at any cost RIGHT NOW.
I don't want to deny them the opportunity. Oh yeah, and I'm curious what is the market rate for one of these ATM.
Aren't you?

Sorry for rubbing anyone the wrong way. All the negative feelings of being a BFL customer kind of culminated at the birth of this
thread and the ebay listing. Just couldn't keep my cool I guess. As I've said before. Can't wait 'till all the ASIC drama is over with.
It will be the day anyone can order top of the line mining hardware at marginal cost and have it delivered within days IMO.

Just noticed that the auction is no longer on ebay. I wonder if the OP got his 25k or decided to mine with it.

Yeah, I just noticed that too but the item isn't available to view like with closed auctions. It's completely removed without a trace. That usually happens when someone complains to eBay about the listing or eBay decides to remove it on their own. I saw that a few times with big actual fireworks listed on eBay.

Ebay canceled the listing not me. They want me to "verify" my account with ID because the price is much higher than anything I've ever sold to protect the buyers which is something they are good at. They also want me to prove I own the device by having the manufacture send them a receipt. They also asked why shipping would be delayed if 25K wasn't met. They couldn't understand that. This is a good thing. It gives me a chance to make a listing that doesn't rub anyone the wrong way and using Bitmit which is what I should have used in the first place.

Now, do I trust that much money sitting in escrow on Bitmit?

Mentioned in one of the answers to the questions posed on ebay, I plan to use these funds to fuel development of a 3rd party BFL chip miner.

Thanks,
      Allten

57  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is Avalon mining with customer hardware? Answer is here. on: June 18, 2013, 06:30:58 PM
This sucks!

I've had no problem telling people that I'm greedy. Not something I'm proud of but I do try to
control it and diminish its influence on my outlook.

It's when greed turns to dishonesty, deception, and outright theft that really pisses me off.

Hope Avalon makes a quick turn around on this mess with no more justifications on this
poor behavior.
58  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Recieved 50GH BFL Single Today! on: June 17, 2013, 11:11:19 PM

From the auction:

Quote
For every 1K under 25K on the final sales price will cause a delay in shipping by one week. Please do not bid if you have a problem with this!

Creative, but really?

I'm not sure you can actually do that and not violate EBAY ToS...

Yeah, really! ebay charges a fortune for "reserve". If they give me any problems then I say good by to ebay for good.

If you're willing to do that aren't you just as willing to screw over the buyer? You have already said several things that would keep me from ever buying it from you.

I see your point; just don't buy. screwing over a buyer vs. leaving ebay for being inflexible on their TOS that I don't even know what it says is not the same in my view. But to each his own. I've been on the edge of never selling on ebay again and I have a perfect rating. If they [ebay] give me problems, it won't be a problem for the buyer. I'll just move over to bitmit where i also have a good rating.

Like I said in the listing, if you don't like how it is then just don't bid. Pretty simple really.

That's awesome! get it up and running and let us know how she runs  Shocked

It's been running for over an hour now. Seems to be averaging out around 56+ GH/s.
Just wish I had not lent out my killowatt meter. I really need it right now.

Thanks! that was a close one. Glad no one had bid yet. I changed it to new other. I didn't put any details because the target audience shouldn't have a problem understanding the situation.
