1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to search wallet balance? on: December 17, 2022, 12:14:57 AM
xpub is exactly what I was looking for. This shows my entire balance. I remember reading about xpubs but it didn't click until now. Thank you all!

Thank you. I'm familiar with the fact that new addresses are generated each time but I thought they were all underneath a single umbrella address (same private key) and would therefore show as a single balance.

After my original post, I searched for the wallets that I received funds to and the sum of them all add up to what I expected.

Rookie question... When Glassnode says there's x number of wallets with at least 1 bitcoin, is that analytic only accounting for wallets that made a whole BTC transfer into them? Or is it grouping all wallets together that are underneath one seed phrase?

Thank you that was helpful. Instead of going to "Receive" and copying that address, I went to a past transaction and pulled that address like you said. A balance DOES show up now but it's around half the balance in my wallet. Very confused.

When I search for any of my wallet balances on CoinTracker or Blockstream, it says there's zero bitcoin and zero transactions have occurred on this wallet. Why is that? I'm copying the address from my Ledger app and Coldcard so I know it's correct, yet no balance according to Blockstream and Cointracker. What am I missing?
5  Other / Beginners & Help / Where do you store your cold wallet?? on: January 11, 2021, 07:39:13 PM
Where do you store your cold wallet? A safe in your house? Also, where do you store your backup recovery phrase? Seems risky to store them both in the same place right? Fire could take both out.
6  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are you buying right now ? on: January 06, 2021, 03:14:12 PM
Buying? I guess that's not the right thing to do.

Bitcoin is in bull run, we should not be buying, instead we should be selling and don't be greedy.
It's okay to aim more, but we should set some target to sell, avoid being greedy so we will not regret.

Actually it's still possible that the price will continue to rise, but there's more possibility that it will fall down again.

I thought there was consensus that BTC is likely to surpass $100k soon and $500k+ within 5 years due to all the institutional buyers coming in. Are you selling due to expecting SHORT TERM dips and then plan to buy back in after the dips? I have trouble justifying selling (even with expected corrections) bc where else can I stick my money that will give me even 10% the return BTC is likely to put off?

Thank you all for the thorough replies! I’m sold on cold storage now. I just purchased the Ledger Nano S.

Cold storage is not prone to attacks online, the only risk of security for cold wallets is that it is physically stolen from you. Unlike Coinbase which locks some users accounts, you can access your funds anytime. You have to watchful because cold wallet are far more inconvenient when you are trading.

I understand that the online platforms are prone to cyber attacks but doesn’t the FDIC insurance make that a non issue? The frozen accounts thing is concerning. I wonder the reason?
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why is cold storage better than coinbase? on: December 31, 2020, 05:10:32 AM
It seems most bitcoiners prefer cold hardware wallets over online platforms but why is that? Considering platforms like coinbase are FDIC insured and have the best security in the business, it seems much riskier to try to secure my bitcoins on my own. I feel my house burning down or some other accident destroying my wallet is much more likely than losing it on Coinbase. And if there is a breach in coinbase, I get it back... so what am I missing?? While I’m not new to owning bitcoin, I am new to learning about it. So I apologize if this is an annoying newb question.
