81  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 29, 2021, 08:45:32 AM
I'm a bit late to the party, but is that DOGE stuff actually connected to WSB (Reddit)?

I've seen nothing about it in https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/ (I guess that's their sub-Reddit, /wsb/ is in private mode), or on https://twitter.com/wsbmod (according to the side bar, the official Mod Twitter account).

Yeah some people are commenting on it but there are so many comments that DOGE comments seem few and sparse. However the discord server of WSB is being spammed with people telling others to buy DOGE

Can someone explain why that is so though? Can't exchanges similarly just "stop" people from buying bitcoin? I get that people can still do P2P transactions, but what happens if the "big" exchanges treat bitcoin similarly as RH did, restricting the buying...what happens then?
83  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 29, 2021, 03:57:15 AM
My moron son just traded $20 of his satoshis for dogecoin. I tried to warn him but I guess you just need to learn.....

Idk how much bad of an idea it actually is? Because the wsb discord guys seem to be trying to hold dogecoin until it's $1. Thats a substantial increase but pretty unlikely all things considered.

Ah well. Could be worse, could have been Ether.

Can I ask why do you consider Ether so bad?

Google Deletes RH Negative Reviews

Quote
Google is actively removing negative reviews of the Robinhood app from the Google Play Store, the company confirmed to The Verge. After some disgruntled Robinhood users organized campaigns to give the app a one-star review on Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store — and succeeded in review-bombing it all the way down to a one-star rating — the company has now deleted enough reviews to bring it back up to nearly four stars.

Oh well. Everyone's in cahoots now I guess but also that was probably expected somewhat of Google. But this kind of behaviour is pretty darn illegal from what I have been reading.

This being done by congress seems somewhat promising but idk what, if anything will come out of this.
85  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: {WARNING} FAKE Trezor website - Phishing Attempt! on: January 29, 2021, 03:32:26 AM
Anyway, who are capable to use a hardware wallet means at least he/she have a few basic knowledge such as scam (IMO). So, I don't think any existing user will handover their seed phrase there.

I've seen many inexperienced and new users come to this forum and ask about hardware wallets the first thing when it is clear that they are pretty new crypto, so yeah, there's still a decent chance someone could fall for something like this, although this is by no means a well-done attempt.

NYSE closed GME trading?
That didn't age well. Stockfuckheads trying to scam Wallstreetbets.  Sad
Why does Bloomberg and Google show GME at $132 and $208 suddenly now? Just a few hours ago it was ~$380-400...what happened? Just curious

It's called a sell-off.

You think stonks only go up? Esp without a 'buy' button? Lol  Cheesy

Nah lol but I thought that there were still some apps that allowed buying GME? Is this due to the fact that most of the trades were done through RH and since that has closed buying, the sell-off is happening by the hedge funds?

As far as I understand, people on the RH can only either HOLD or sell, and most or r/wallstreetbets are holding.

NVM: Its back at $298 on Google right now, rising slowly back up.

The brokers have been opening for seconds at a time, just enough to allow the hedgefunds to drive the price down (probably just selling to each other), then immediately closing, thereby removing any opportunity for retail investors to buy.  Then 20 mins later the same thing happens again. The manipulation is happening in plain view but it can't go on forever. Sooner or later the market wil have to reopen properly and as long as the retail investors HODL, or keep buying, the price will have to go up.

How is that even remotely legal? From when is it the broker's responsibility to monitor how markets should work/not work? It seems that RH was just selling off data to these hedge funds and making money off of it.

88  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: {WARNING} FAKE Trezor website - Phishing Attempt! on: January 28, 2021, 03:48:02 PM
Pretty classical. As soon as you start moving around the site, you’ll find that not much occurs until you click the "I already own Trezor" link. From there on, it states that your device’s data is corrupt (seemingly determined through clairvoyance), and proceeds to ask for your 12 or 24 mnemonic word seed. I chose the former to leave a light hearted message to the scammers (12 slang words seem easier than coming up with 24).

Yes, this seems like a half-assed attempt at best, but still that is enough to fool some less tech-savvy users, if they see enough of this link, some might think its legit and put their actual seed into this. The website on its own is pretty shoddily designed, but I guess they don't see much point in that as if someone can be fooled by these websites, most probably they do not have enough technical know-how to find these flaws.
89  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 28, 2021, 03:10:53 PM
If it is about naked short selling, I hope this little farce will bring the much deserved scrutiny on the practice of mass naked short selling.

Absolutely, and all for it. Melvin apparently shorted 140% Gamestop stock. What's even better is the Gamestop slogan is perfect for sticking it to the man: Power to the Players
90  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 28, 2021, 01:15:14 PM
I'm not trading stonks, but I applaud the guys over at r/wallstreetbets. They have my full support, I hope Melvin Capital goes bankrupt.

This has been a wild ride and I'm all for it. u/DeepFuckingValue has a ~1000x profit now, as he had invested around $53K into GME and held onto it and its almost ~$50M now.

91  Economy / Scam Accusations / {WARNING} FAKE Trezor website - Phishing Attempt! on: January 28, 2021, 01:05:47 PM
A fake website is trying to lure people in with phishing attempts, pretending to be the website of the crypto wallet, Trezor. Their URL looks just like the original one, except for the accent at the bottom of the letter "e", which many users might not notice. Please try staying away from this website, and check the URL and always check for HTTPS encryption (this website is not encrypted and thus shows up as "Not Secure" in most browsers).

Please see the difference here:

The first one (FAKE) doesn't have the padlock, which indicates HTTPS encryption, which means that the first site is not secure. Also, when pasting that fake link into a notepad, the plaintext comes out to be:
Code:
http://xn--trzor-k0a.io/

This is actually the URL of the website. This is a kind of attack where unicode characters are used to disguise the real letters. This is also common with Russian characters, a lot of them look similar but are actually different from the English characters that are used in URLs. Another common thing its used is in spoofing "l" with "I", as they look similar in a lot of fonts (actually, most of the sans serif fonts). You can read more about this attack on here : IDN Homograph Attack Wikipedia

I thought of warning the community, as any beginner wanting to purchase a Trezor hardware wallet might get scammed and phished if they are redirected to this URL by clicking on a link on any website. Stay vigilant, people.

Reddit post that brought the issue to my notice: https://www.reddit.com/r/hacking/comments/l6snf7/url_manipulation_on_phishing_site_never_seen_this/
92  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 28, 2021, 12:34:04 PM
I mean the shorters haven't exited their postions yet. Which means a short squeeze hasn't happened yet.

Shorters can only exit their position by buying the same number of shares they have shorted. When this happens it will add to the buying demand even more. I'm shocked that there has been no covering yet, these shorters are sitting on billions of dollars of losses.

Exiting their position is gonna be quite difficult isn't it, seeing as they shorted it by 140%, so if they want to try to cover their losses and buy back now (for reducing losses), there are literally not enough stocks available for everyone to buy back. That's gonna cause even more demand, and the guys over at r/wallstreetbets ain't selling. SEC has supposedly "started monitoring the sub". Not sure why, because as of my understanding, none of this is illegal yet and this is how the hedge funds who are crying now have been screwing people over in the past.

~snip~

Okay, so yeah that's what I figured. You are basically just exporting the private keys into Electrum for that method. You aren't downloading the blockchain in any mode. For that you can just be offline and do that stuff without any problems. But you still need to remember your passphrase/seed and the address for that to work, if I understand that correctly. What errors are you getting currently?
94  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 28, 2021, 11:52:32 AM
Robinhood has announced that no further positions for GME/AMC can be opened for Friday. See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/l6plv0/robinhood_announces_you_can_no_longer_open_gmeamc/

Meanwhile, u/DeepFuckingValue is now at ~ $47M in profits, and seems like he aint selling, and neither are the rest of the guys on there, the sub just crossed 4.4M people. Amazing to see this kind of thing going on, GME, BB, AMC all probably gonna get a pretty hefty boost over the weekend. What boggles my mind is how u/DeepFuckingValue held his position firm a year ago and predicted Jan 2021?

Holy. Shit. And all of the guys over there seem to be holding there ground and probably won't sell until the Squeeze is over and Melvin is probably gonna go crashing down, atleast thats what it looks like. I can see something like this happening to crypto soon, its pretty likely imo
95  Local / India / Re: How do YOU convert your Bitcoins to INR ? on: January 28, 2021, 09:42:46 AM
~snip~

Every one of your posts is about PCEX Member exchange. This doesn't really bring anything useful to the community, all of your posts state more or less the same thing and you aren't contributing to the community except just promoting PCEX Member exchange. Just a suggestion: try to participate in constructive and meaningful discussion in this board, it will both help you and this Indian board.

As for how I convert my BTC to INR, I have previously used bitrefill before, when bitcoin was pretty low compared to today, around 2017. It was useful for making micro payments. I have also used localbitcoins once, to convert a small amount of BTC to fiat, it allows P2P exchange and thus its better imho than the centralized exchanges that require loads of KYC, especially now looking at the BuyUcoin hack.
96  Local / India / Re: Brainstorming various ideas for Reshaping the Indian Board on: January 27, 2021, 08:48:31 AM
Okay this thread has been inactive for a while, but I have some thoughts on how the board can be revived, so I thought of posting here itself without starting a new thread about the same topic when it already exists. I've been scouring this local board in the last month in which I joined, and I think I might have some ideas that might be helpful.

1. Firstly, I completely agree with the others that a mod needs to be assigned to this local board. This needs to be someone who is a merit source ideally, as that would help with new users getting recognition and they will be rewarded for making actually constructive posts.

2. I see that @Heisenberg_Hunter organizes monthly raffles to incentivize activity within this board. Instead of this being a "lucky number raffle", you can try to incentivize constructive posting within this community (and maybe even in the global topics, but atleast X posts mandatory in the local board) somehow. It could be by posting useful news, writing constructive help posts for beginners and troubleshooting information, basically to stop shitposting and reduce people's dependence on bounties. You could reward the most "helpful user of the month"/"best new member" with a few merits for their best posts, and also a small amount of bitcoin. This would be for maybe Newbies - Members, and would take place bi-monthly, and the normal lucky raffles can take place in the alternate months. I think this would greatly improve post quality and activity here.

Basically, what I find that, as signature campaigns do not count local board posts, that just seems like a waste to most people, who think that this is a money making machine kind of a place. This mindset needs to be stopped, so that's why I think organizing bi-monthly contests like these will help and encourage new users.
97  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: mining with laptop bad idea?? on: January 27, 2021, 07:24:40 AM
It is a bad idea. First off, you probably wont profit for the risk to be worth it, due to electricity costs due to the power requirement. Secondly, a lot of heat is generated while mining and its just a bad idea to try that with a laptop CPU/GPU which is pretty close to the red line in terms of cooling. You have an RTX 2060, so it can be anywhere from the 90W-115W variant. The yields on a laptop are significantly low compared to ASICs which are made for this use specifically, and you will generate a lot of heat which will cause your laptop to fail. How fast, you might ask? Well it all depends on your specific model, how much airflow, cooling capacity is there in your laptop, its all model-specific so its not possible to give estimates, but be rest assured that your device's lifespan, battery life, and thermal performance will significantly reduce over time.

As for a cooling pad, they generally do not help as much, but since your laptop's bottom is off, I guess that helps a bit. But you have to know that long term operation like that and mining via laptop GPUs for ETH/BTC isn't really beneficial now, maybe some altcoins, if even that. But generally, no, not recommended, just not worth the risk.

TLDR: No
98  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: RTX 3080 or RTX 3090 ? on: January 27, 2021, 05:48:09 AM
No card comes with as much expectation as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090. Being the sole replacement for two heavy hitters from the last generation, Nvidia Titan RTX and the RTX 2080 Ti, is no easy feat as those are some big shoes to fill.

The good news is the “BFGPU” hiding behind the enormous heatsink is more than capable of doing heavy 3D rendering and gaming, due to its 24GB of GDDR6X memory. It’s also powerful enough to run 8K gaming at 60 fps, although the performance there still comes with some mixed results. As this generation’s flagship card, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 reigns supreme over everything else available in the market.

Who said that the RTX 3090 is meant to replace the Titan RTX? It has been expressly said that the RTX 3090 is not meant to be the Titan replacement, its not "the same as Titan". A Titan has a lot more driver optimizations for specific use cases, and those haven't been enabled on RTX 3090, and probably will never be, as there for sure will be another Titan 30 series card. The 3090 is meant to be the ultimate prosumer card, not a workstation RTX Titan replacement. I think it has been stated in the tech press and by some Nvidia officials too, multiple times.
99  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: If i send someone btc, can they see what kind of wallet i use? on: January 27, 2021, 04:35:35 AM
Where did is say that?
I gave you an theoretical example where any 3rd person can do that?

And if you are using a VPN, yes.. obviously the VPN provider knows everything about you (and they do make money off your data).

Not always true about VPNs though. Some VPNs have a no-log policy, and many of them have been shown to actually maintain it and this has also been tested in court multiple times. These are the VPNs that do not store your data, so neither do they make money off of your data, nor can they provide info to law enforcement even if their hand is forced, as they simply cannot. How do they earn money? By taking a monthly fee from you and making sure that they are true to their word so they do not lose customers. One example for this has been PIA (their claims have held up in court pretty well), but idk if that will be the case anymore since Kape Technologies has bought them out.

Source: PIA No-log claims held up in court

My point is, not every VPN sells your data off to make money, its mostly the ones that aren't vetted and generally have poor privacy practices. The free ones all DO sell your data, thats how they are free and they shouldn't be used anyways if privacy is your concern.

I'm pretty new to this forum myself, so yeah I'm pretty new to these kinds of shitposting and shill behaviour and trying to get paid for writing false reviews in single paragraphs that obviously don't count for shit.

I at first thought it was some kind of a referral Pyramid scheme, seeing the commissions and how users were promoting their usernames, but then realised it was some kind of gambling website? But how the 'reviewers' expect any of the reviews to be believable when they basically brand it as a "money making machine" is beyond me.

It looks like the promotion is ended. We havent seen any new positive newbie feedback for almost one

Umm...no I don't think it has ended tbh. I just saw one of these newbies making a thread about this website on the Bitcoin Discussion forum, and reported it, and followed it back here to find this monstrosity of a spam thread. This is the new thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5312446.0
