I hate to say it, but this thread has slipped off the topic. (Ahem, Nefario) Perhaps the last few posts could be moved to their own thread specific to the GLBSE?

Also, Nefario, the GLBSE charts page says "Out of Coins".

Out of coins again?

Thats bitcoincharts standard server error, been getting a lot of that, I'll get it sorted.

Also will clear up off topic posts.

Anonymity might help him to avoid criminal prosecution (if anonymity is breached and if there were indeed any crimes commited), however it does not help at all with keeping Limited Liability protection. That's what I mean.

BTW. Most people do not have any clue on how difficult it is to stay anonymous on the net, particularly when there are allegations of crime thrown around.

I suspect that this is the reason for his very minimal contact with the community. The more he talks and communicates with the community the higher the risk of his ID being discovered.

There is also how he has paid for his hosting, unless he is paying for his hosting with bitcoin (which is very possible) and he has not bought  the coins off an exchange then the credit card can be traced back to him if it's a personal one. There is no such thing as anonymous banking in this world, so that if the credit card is registered with his company he will still have to provide an identity.

It may be difficult and even costly to track him down but it can be done...unless he's a government agent in which case all bets are off as the state (whichever one) would provide protection.

A court order can be obtained in to reveal his identity in the region that his LLC is incorporated.

Quote
If he's not incorporated, he can be sued for his personal assets and cash by anyone and everyone who lost bitcoins from this.  I encourage people to take this route once more of his information is revealed, and if he does not fully reimburse every single person who used the service.
MyBitcoin is Limited Liability Company, i.e. owners don't take any liability for company's debts. In this case maximum you can get suing them is corporation's assets.

Not really true in all cases. Limited liability does not protect in cases when some kind of crime is proven. Whether it is fraud, operating a depositary institution without appropriate license or something else. By hiding identity, operator of mybitcoin does not help himself much in this regard too.

His anonymity is the strongest protection for him to avoid criminal prosecution, enough funds are at stake with mybitcoin.com to warrant the harmed parties to chase him to wherever he happens to be. Once we discover who he is he has no protection, having a disclaimer on the bottom of your site doesn't protect you from criminal charges if you're guilty.
1484  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 on: August 07, 2011, 07:18:14 AM
(although they are watching these forums).

Are they? How are you so sure about that?

Why wouldn't they?
1485  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 on: August 07, 2011, 03:00:11 AM
mybitcoin is stalling for time.

They have no contact information available and are not communicating (although they are watching these forums).

They have said there will be a claims process but they've not done anything.

From the information provided, on the technical side their story doesn't add up.

I vote for continuing to attempt to uncover the real identity of Tom Williams. It seems this is the only reason he made a statement at all.

I think what you mean is: How can you buy shares OF GLBSE.

I will be listing GLBSE shares on the exchange later today, I'm going over the terms and conditions for the last time.

I would like to point out that Peter has not informed me of this newly created asset, nor am I personally affiliated with it in any way.

I would like to add that Peter has been an honest and active member of the bitcoin community and forums, and also on the GLBSE forums, and therefor has my full support for this project.

1488  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 on: August 06, 2011, 12:50:17 PM
I said this before, and it only applies if MyBitcoin's losses are at the "thousands" scale: I wonder if we can buy him out.

Let's say 10000 BTC got stolen. A trusted intermediary (the new administrative board + jury) could create a new asset on GLBSE with 10000 shares, each worth 1 BTC, so that the new company would be 100% publicly owned.

This way, everyone gets their money back AND we save MyBitcoin, which is IMO a valuable asset for the community. Otherwise, both will be lost. Plus, Tom Williams can stay anonymous. Win-Win-Win.

Hmmmm, this...looks like a bailout.

I don't think we'd be buying him out, we should offer him 1btc for all of mybitcoin.com, all it's assets and liabilities, end result being we take over responsibility and Mr. Williams can walk away from this mess. There is no reason to actually pay him more than a token amount for mybitcoin and everything with it, it's already broke and worth nothing to him, if anything it's a major headache for him.

That's only if some conditions are met:
1) The amount of btc lost is less (perhaps a lot less) than the share capital we raise to "recapitalise" mybitcoin (oh God this sounds familiar).
2) mybitcoin.com could generate enough profit to eventually repay these capital costs.

IF those conditions are met then yeah, we can bail ou.... I mean buy out mybitcoin.com

Interested parties should pm or email me doctor.nefario@gmail.com, I'll handle everything with regards GLBSE, someone else needs to get in contact with Mr. Williams and get a response from him on this as I don't know the guy.

1489  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Total exchange transparency - linking virtual trades to bitcoin transactions! on: August 06, 2011, 02:07:58 AM
Any centralized method will have major flaws. There really is no substitute for distributed transaction ledgers. We're unfortunately seeing the results of bad planning and human error when it comes to how some exchanges function. Can't completely engineer that out.

Well the whole point of an exchange is centralisation, thats exactly what a market is, a central place for people to trade.
1490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Show on OnlyOneTV.com on: August 05, 2011, 07:40:23 AM
Would be interesting to find out just how much was stolen, and then how.
1491  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Total exchange transparency - linking virtual trades to bitcoin transactions! on: August 04, 2011, 06:04:40 AM
Total wallet transparency is only possible IF bitcoind also keeps track of which account is transfering what bitcoin to another account, it means that any system hooking in with bitcoind (like mtgox's trading system) must have exactly matching records. It also means that it's not possible to have offsite wallet storage.

Currently this is how GLBSE works, we use our accounting system AND bitcoind to keep track, and we could trivially provide said transparency, however there is a cost.

1)It would require us to have 100% bitcoin on system, i.e. in one wallet.
2)It removes privacy of users, meaning it would be possible not just for users to track where their bitcoin comes and goes from, but everyone else too.

We're in the process of moving away from the above system because it causes needless complications, is a major security risk, and removes our users privacy.

There are other methods to achieve the result you are looking for, and that's auditing, having bitcoin audits by trusted members of the community.

1492  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So since no Bitcoin service can be trusted anymore ... on: August 03, 2011, 06:09:48 AM

Show me a list of services or websites that provide only an e-mail address and no phone number and you will have your list of untrusted sites.   Pretty simple rule I have always used with online transactions.

Not exactly, I've got all my contact details for the net on glbse.com, I COULD give a phone number but it would only be for a mobile in China (do you guys really want that? should I add it?).

Essentially only have trading bitcoin on sites, that is whatever the amount you intend to trade soon. Don't use them as wallets or for long term savings. I would say the same is true for GLBSE.

These sites are run by humans, who do make mistakes (accidents) and who also decide to do bad things (mybitcoin.com???).

Spread your risk as Gavin said, and remember bitcoin itself is a very risky investment.
1493  Economy / Services / Looking for someone to set up L2TP/IPSEC vpn for android/iPhone on a vps on: August 03, 2011, 02:18:18 AM
As the title says,

Someone to set up L2TP/IPSec on a vps (probably one of the newer version of Debian) for iphone/android clients (possibly with a web interface for manging accounts if there's one around).

The purpose being to allow andoid and ios clients to connect and make use of the set up vpn.

If you're able give me a price.

1495  Other / Meta / Re: don't let people change usernames on: August 02, 2011, 07:33:55 AM
+1 has my vote, on the other hand I'd still be known as anonygas if I couldn't change my username, and that would suck.

1496  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE's latest updates (an early Christmas present for non-techies) on: August 01, 2011, 04:54:46 AM
Using nginx
1497  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE's latest updates (an early Christmas present for non-techies) on: August 01, 2011, 03:26:30 AM
With regards the Chrome warning, thats because we've got links to non-ssl resources on the home page (the feedback form for example, possibly even the twitter feed stuff).
as I mentioned earlier in the thread I'm certain it is just the twitter feed, at least with respect to firefox. it's pretty low priority in any case. having a redirect for the www sub-domain to primary domain would be a smidgeon higher on the list for trivial issues.

Yeah the www. redirect is a pain in the ASS.

My http server redirects all http traffic to https first, need to add www. to be redirected to non www before it does a https redirect.

I tried just doing the redirect as a cname in dns but hasn't worked.
1498  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE's latest updates (an early Christmas present for non-techies) on: July 31, 2011, 11:50:31 PM
I'm using nginx as a ssl frontend and have different servers behind(none of them doing ssl). The main purpose of having ssl is to protect peoples glbse forums passwords (please if you have a forum account have a unique password, don' reuse passwords).

GLBSE clients (both web and command line) send no useful or itentiffying information so there is no need for ssl for that, actually the entire server database could be stolen and it would still provide no more information than a bunch of transaction records, some bitcoin addresses and a big list of public keys. OK I'd like for all that information to stay private but still, thats your limit of personal data exposure when using GLBSE.

We dont keep emails or anything else. Oh we do keep access logs, i.e. so we can debug any problems and normal http logs.

With regards the Chrome warning, thats because we've got links to non-ssl resources on the home page (the feedback form for example, possibly even the twitter feed stuff).

Ben, you can go ahead and not worry about verification of the ssl cert for development ATM, I'll get that fixed by Friday (god I hate ssl certs).
1499  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Ubitex: In-person Bitcoin exchange [EARLY BETA!] [STOCK AVAILABLE] on: July 31, 2011, 11:33:03 PM
My sole computer recently failed. I'm writing this from my phone, waiting for the replacement to arrive. Should be here in 1-2 weeks.

Until then, I can't talk much on forums or IRC, nor can I work on the site.

Sincere apologies.

Dude go to an internet Cafe.
