Sorry for necro-ing this thread.
Wondered if there was any further thoughts or ideas on this decentralised p2p exchange idea.

I've been working on a new peer-to-peer exchange that employs WebRTC for the past few weeks. It's pretty unique because it fully complies with FinCEN's regulations around exchange because all communication in the platform is conducted directly peer-to-peer and subsequent exchanges are conducted physically by the respective exchangers (I'd love to employ an online transfer in further iterations, but don't have a good solution yet). I just went live with an early alpha tonight if others would like to try it out and give feedback. My primary goal with the platform is give as much anonymity as possible, meaning that I self-host all files (no external js). I'm stuck using an external tile-server (which means mapquest logs some data, including IP + timestamp), but I hope to get some capacity soon to bring that in-house as well so no external logging of users occurs (beyond ISPs). The site is elqnt.org (pronounced eloquent). Best, Stephen This is a brilliant step, and congratulations for the person who thought this up! However, as constructive criticsm, I must say that the poster below (Astrohacker) who makes a comment regarding trust has a valid point. This idea of lack of trust is what coagulates the liquidity of trading in any peer-to-peer exchange. I do understand that alot of us are not fans of ripple because they bastardise what the protocol actually stands for, however the concept of having a network (and thus a route) of trust is something that can help with this regard. The problem is that in order for it to be effective, the trust network needs to reach a critical mass for it to be effective. It's a catch 22 but it is the only way I can see exchanges happening properly. This trust could naturaly develop when bitcoiners trade small amounts amongst each other first to build up trust, and then you can have this expressed as a credit line, so as people make small trades with everybody, the more collective trust there is to finance this ripple-like system. This is what I believe would propel the idea of P2P exchange.

Thing is, you will be sinking goods/services, though.

As long as there are markets which we can all have access to, then price discovery will be possible. Markets, especially emerging ones, are incredibly emotional.
At the moment we need exchanges because of the price volatility, so if we ever trade bitcoin, we are, straight away, checking what the latest price on an exchange is.
However, if that spot price on the exchange stayed the same for a while, people eventually won't bother going to the exchange to see how much their bitcoins are worth.

The ship idea would be the best one yet.
Only problems that need to be solved is how to have enough renewable energy to sustainable propulsion and other things.
Or we can do some research and build a city at the bottom of the ocean, and we can call it..... RAPTURE.
Maybe a currency doesn't need a nation, or anything. Bitcoin was started on the internet, so it will inspire from the internet. Bitcoin needs to go viral. The problem is that its so difficult to the layman to understand. I got casascius physical coins delivered to my grandparents house, and they said: "Vat iz this?" and I went: "Bitcoins" and they pulled confused faces and went: "What is a bitcoin?" And there I sighed at the futility of explaining to technophobic grandparents what bitcoin was and how it worked. So I settled for: "It's a currency." Next question was: "Who uses it?" Stumped...
It's people who offer goods and services who help out the bitcoin world.
At the moment, the hysteria is coming from people noticing Bitcoin is a good investment, but this is good because more people become aware, so more people willing to sell goods and services for it. Speculation is the nessecary growing pains, even people who accept bitcoin, but charge their equivilant in local currency. Eventually things will be nice and stable and there will be no need to have these exchange rates, then the bitcoin world will blossom!
But the kid in me would prefer a floating city, or an underwater city. NAY! A submarine city!!!

Why do we even have to have Bitcoin Town on land? All land belongs to somebdy.
Why not buy a cruise ship instead? Or one of those seasteading projects?
Before anything. The main thing an new town requires is food, then maybe shelter, although food is the priority.
Thing is, I find it really interesting to see the contrast of requiring high-speed internet, as well as farms for food.

A peer-to-peer exchange will always have the problem of 'who sends first' so it comes at high risk, no matter how well disguised under the TOR network it is.
I think this was mentioned before, but the best, and truest way to have a true peer-to-peer network would be to implement more of a Ripple protocol and link it with Bitcoin exchanges.

I would suggest looking into what is going on with Open Transactions and its recent integration testing with BitMessage.
If this is packaged well then I think it could well be the "next big thing" (and it doesn't require XRP).
What is Open Transactions, sorry?

Has this gotten anywhere? I just found it now and thought that there truly is a need for an open-source, decentralised implementation of the Ripple protocol.
