1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Something not right. on: October 08, 2019, 03:31:27 AM
When I was a victim it was advised to me to change the hard-disk and when asked they said changing OS is not the permanent fix. Can you explain which one is the right.
Probably because of those "low-level viruses" that can infect at binary level.
High-level format, aka: "format disk" or "delete partition" doesn't actually delete most of the files' traces, that's why it's possible to recover them using deleted file recovering tools.

Low-level format (zero-fill) should work in those cases, but that involves professional software tools.

There are malware which edits the firmware of the disk and then even full formatting will not remove the malware.
Therefore, advice for paranoid people is to replace the disk (perhaps flashing it will solve the problem, but who knows).
For even larger paranoiacs - replace (reflash) the motherboard. But in any case there is no guarantee that everything is taken into account.
One can only hope that such utilities will not be used for the mass user. Or use hardware/cold wallets.

One example:
https://www.wired.com/2015/02/nsa-firmware-hacking/

Quote
When a machine is infected with EquationDrug or GrayFish, the firmware flasher module gets deposited onto the system and reaches out to a command server to obtain payload code that it then flashes to the firmware, replacing the existing firmware with a malicious one.
~
The only solution for victims is to trash their hard drive and start over with a new one.
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to lose your Bitcoins with CTRL-C CTRL-V on: October 08, 2019, 03:09:33 AM
If I can suggest a simple work around to avoid this kind of theft, I can suggest a easy virtual machine installation
I use it for my home banking and Crypto transfers.
An USB, 128gb or more to get acceptable performance
All the address saved in the task bar to avoid fake site found by googling
Linux lubuntu, a lighted and fast version of Linux.
When I need to use home baking or Crypto wallet I use this USB. I called it bank box.
Not sure at 100, but for sure more Than home pc.
If I'm forced to use it from my home pc, I usually check the first and last 3 or for address chars.

I also used a virtual machine for some time and it was with lubuntu too.
But still, this method, although safer, also has drawbacks if a trojan settles on the main computer.
Therefore, over time, I moved to an old dedicated laptop.

I hope did you turn off access to the host clipboard in the guest isolation settings?

I also think that 3+3 characters is not enough. It is possible to do hijacker that will pick up a larger number of characters.
3  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [BEWARE] MasterMana Botnet Malware Attack on Crypto Wallets on: October 07, 2019, 03:57:32 AM
read the full email address of the sender.

That is the wrong advice if I understand you correctly.
How will this help in case of e-mail spoofing, when the sender can change the value of the 'sender' field to one that does not belong to him?

The vulnerability example you gave however effected Chrome, not Chromium.

Nope. You are not right again. If you looked at the link that I gave above, you would go to the original description of the bug:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=913964
So, CVE-2019-5787 (Issue 913964 in the repository) is a Chromium bug.
There are patch for the bug:
https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src.git/+/8cbb211d93b114c2bc348837d787aa5c8e545e40

You can check other Chromium security bugs: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/list?q=type%3Abug-security%20os%3DAndroid%2Cios%2Clinux%2Cmac%2Cwindows&can=1

I do not know by what principle they relate CVE to which vendor.
But as you can see above, the bug is declared and fixed in the chromium.
So brave had this bug too.

By the way, they paid $ 3,000 for this bug.

all my emails need phone verification to open and every Gmail account holders should do the same

It's better to use the something like Google Authenticator than a phone for protection due sim swapping.
I have already met a number of such cases in crypto and in traditional banks sphere.
This is a targeted attack, respectively, if you have significant amounts - you should think about it.

Bare in mind that Chrome has 100+ vulnerabilities per year, Brave hasn't had one yet in 2019. Just saying  Grin

No, you are not right. The brave is based on the chromium and has exactly the same vulnerabilities as a chromium.
For example, CVE-2019-5787.
This vulnerability was fixed in chromium 73.0.3683.75.
And here is the brave update for this version: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/3669

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=1942

If I understand correctly, an additional application is required to operate the bug in the browser.
That is, only using the browser control can not be obtained. Correct if I'm wrong.

8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Paper wallets on: October 04, 2019, 04:40:47 PM
Please make sure that you download locally the scrips from bitaddress.org and run them in a safe environment; you don't want others also get those private keys.

It's pretty hard to trust all of these generators. Even if you run it offline, there is no guarantee that a vulnerability is added to the random number generator.
Everything rests on the credibility of the developer and the hope that someone reviewed code. Therefore, only electrum or core.
Something like this: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/aug/15/google-android-bitcoin-securerandom-vulnerability
This situation looks like an accident, but also someone can bring vulnerability intentionally.
9  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Can I recover my account on blockchain.com -2FA, password lost, email accessible on: October 03, 2019, 03:56:20 AM
Hi all,

Can I recover my account on blockchain.com if I lost my password and 2FA code, just have access to my email used to register that account months ago?

Thank you all very much for any guide to recover my account.

As I know you can't. You should have a password or recovery phrase.

This link for old recovery phrase:
https://login.blockchain.com/wallet/forgot-password

For new HD:
https://login.blockchain.com/#/recover

Reset 2FA:
https://login.blockchain.com/#/reset-2fa

And wallet ID reminder (but you can get it from old emails):
https://login.blockchain.com/#/reminder

So, I don't see any option for you.
And you can contact Support.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What applications do you need to download to your smartphone? on: October 03, 2019, 02:37:49 AM
Just check what you want to download very carefully. The Poloniex exchange for example for a long time didn't have an official application and people often downloaded the application from scammers.
First, choose the exchange on which you will trade. Then read the general security basics related to the phone and the security of working on the exchange (protection of the mailing address, 2fa, etc.). There are various topics in this section - check out. And never put unnecessary applications - all sorts of trading bots, market monitors and the like - all this is unnecessary and can lead to losses. You need an application from the exchange for trading and an application for 2fa. Or sometimes you can trade through the web browser interface.
11  Economy / Economics / Re: Bakkt released September 23 Is it going to pump or dump the price? on: October 02, 2019, 02:41:52 AM
Right now, there is not a big wall between $8k and $10k, so if whales wanted to get it back up it would be super easy for them.

It is impossible to take into account the order books of all exchanges, hidden orders, bots, OTC-orders as well as strong psychological resistance at the 'over 9000' level.
Not to mention that crypto spoofing is still common. In general, looking at the walls is bad idea.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: The performance of staking coins vs non-staking coins on: October 01, 2019, 07:08:57 AM
I often reflect on this question: is staking a positive factor. I think rather yes, if inflation is not very big.
On the one hand, in any case, there will be pressure of new coins on the price. But on the other hand, I know that many people like to save and they like that their number of coins is increasing.
I remember in an interview a representative of either coinbase or another large similar trading platform said that they now have an increased demand for staking coins. Also, some exchanges began to develop this direction: polo (atom), huobi (there are generally a lot of coins - see huobi pool or wallet), binance (a lot), etc.
Therefore, I think staking is promising.
13  Economy / Economics / Re: Investments with Compound interest. on: October 01, 2019, 06:56:35 AM
that compound interest is such a great thing

Conpound interest is one of the most greatest invention of economist.

Compound interest is probably one of the best ways to make money

I don't understand. Isn't that just reinvesting?
You can either take the income, or invest it in whole or in part. What is so special about this?

I check the definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compound_interest
Quote
Compound interest is the addition of interest to the principal sum of a loan or deposit, or in other words, interest on interest. It is the result of reinvesting interest, rather than paying it out, so that interest in the next period is then earned on the principal sum plus previously accumulated interest. Compound interest is standard in finance and economics.

But you describe everything as if you discovered some kind of grail.

14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Need a help on: September 30, 2019, 04:17:12 AM
I don't know about the current price. But in general, Ethereum is a reliable purchase. The likelihood of problems is minimal unlike many other coins and tokens. Especially taking into account the fact that in January it is expected to launch the Phase 1 of Ethereum 2.0 (Casper POS).
Another factor is that over such a long period the vast majority of the ICOs have sold their ethereum funds and will not be able to influence the price.
15  Economy / Economics / Re: Regulation of Cryptocurrency Around the World on: September 27, 2019, 03:37:16 AM
Right now, we are already approaching the regulation of cryptocurrency at the international level. On June 21, the Intergovernmental Organization for Financial Action (FATF) issued its recommendations to more than 200 states and obliged them to adopt their national laws within a year, which should stipulate that any person sending a transaction worth more than one thousand dollars will have to pass a KYC check, and if the transaction is worth more than $ 15,000, exchanges will be required to report the transaction to the appropriate government authorities.

And where does the information about 15,000 come from? I searched the original document and found nothing on this topic. It’s just very strict requirements. And I don't remember that in the same banking environment there were similar ones.

16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Stock Market vs Crypto Market on: September 26, 2019, 05:58:52 AM
Hi all, I'm new to crypto market. Would like to ask is Crypto market correlated to Stock market ? And can we apply Stock investment strategy & technique  in Crypto market Huh

Yeah, the same strategy here - buy low sell high.
Seriously, the crypt reminded me of an early stock market. But the farther, the less inefficiencies.
17  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Crypto volatile again, Whats stopping you from trying Options Trading? on: September 26, 2019, 05:49:49 AM
Too often I see that 95-99% of traders empty their deposits for a long period of time. Here the other day there was again some kind of report from the stock exchange, there it was either daytrading futures or/and options and the same info - over the period of 3 years 98% were empty.
Actually, I don’t have any abilities to predict price movement, so I hodl mostly.
18  Economy / Economics / Re: The Latest Crypto Price Dip Is Fueled By Fake News Relating to Quantum Computers on: September 25, 2019, 08:11:04 AM
#1  Encryption functions on the basis it would take too long to brute force. Google's claim they can solve problems in "200 seconds" that would normally take "10,000 years" directly implies they are poised to break the encryption standards that technologies like bitcoin are built upon.

#2  Where was it "explained" that this news is "not connected" with crypto?

#3  "This has nothing to do with the fall." Based on what? I have seen nothing credible to suggest otherwise.

1. Google:

Quote
that certain computational tasks might be executed exponentially faster on a quantum processor than on a classical processor
...
takes about 200 seconds to sample one instance of the quantum circuit 1 million times
...
The benchmark task we demonstrate has an immediate application in generating certi able random numbers[9]; other initial uses for this new computational capability may include optimization optimization [10{12], machine learning[13{ 15], materials science and chemistry [16{18]. However, realizing the full promise of quantum computing (e.g. Shor’s algorithm for factoring) still requires technical leaps to engineer fault-tolerant logical qubits[19{23]
...
To demonstrate quantum supremacy, we compare our quantum processor against state-of-the-art classical com- puters in the task of sampling the output of a pseudo- random quantum circuit

Google claims that they can execute "certain task" faster. Everything else is speculation.

2. From reddit:

Google and NASA have reached quantum supremacy in a year collaboration. What does it mean for future blockchain security?
Google’s Quantum 'Breakthrough' Won't Destroy Bitcoin. Not Yet
Quantum supremacy and the case for quantum security today in blockchain.
Google reportedly attains 'quantum supremacy'

No panic, no fud, calm discussion.

Here on the forum I saw only a couple of posts on this topic and one explanation. No panic too.

3. Based on the fact that there is no panic, that the news is old (4 days) and did not arouse much interest. The Bakkt, for example, create much more movement.
19  Economy / Economics / Re: The Latest Crypto Price Dip Is Fueled By Fake News Relating to Quantum Computers on: September 25, 2019, 04:25:27 AM
Google claims they achieved "landmark success" with quantum computers which could break the encryption protecting crypto currencies like bitcoin within the near future.

Google did not say anything like that in the second part of your phrase. All the news that I saw correctly indicated that they were solving only a task divorced from practice.
Even in the quote that you bring everything correctly.
No fake news and speculation. And nowhere in the crypto-forums this news was presented so much, but to those singles asked about effect on crypto, they clearly explained that this was not connected with crypto. At least not in the coming years. I did not see any significant interest in this news. Talked a bit and forgot.

And this has nothing to do with the fall.
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC cashback scam? Need your opinion and advice on: September 25, 2019, 04:09:38 AM
I see only one way to get cashback from miners. You need to give them a signed transaction and they will include it in their block, and part of the fee will be returned as a reward.
Theoretically, in practice, I have not seen this.
But I do not know if these few cents are of interest to anyone now with such low fee.
On the other hand when the fee is high, then the blocks are respectively completely filled without any cashbacks.
And the confirmation time grows because you need to wait for the block from this miner.
