Few questions as I'm doing some heavy work with a custom stratum pool.
First off, is mining.set_extranonce being officially supported? If so, is cgminer going to be officially implementing this? I know bfgminer does currently support it.
cgminer doesn't support most things, just the minimum necessity for specific use cases. Generally, you shouldn't need mining.set_extranonce, though. I do, however, require support for set_extranonce. I'll do my own build of cgminer then. Just a pain to get users to use it rather than what they already have. Thanks for the reply. Could just tell them to upgrade to BFGMiner... |

Will this compile on cygwin?
I don't regularly test it, but it did at one point. Very recently, git has some changes that could interfere with that, so if you have any issues, please let me know. |

Sounds about right. Falls under the consistent mining portion of my previous explanation. Consistent being 24/7 for multiple months, IMO.
does cgminer restart every hour affect profit on Eligius apart from apparent 10-15 seconds no hashing time it takes for a restart? i.e. is it considered a pool hop, do I get less reward than if I would not restart? I ask this because this is only way I seem to be able to keep my 12 hour AVG up on my lemon S3. Eligius does not penalise pool hoppers, so no. |

Brainwallets are dangerous if using simple passwords, but using a more complex password, for example: enfjakn/(&/gfjhbafnmjknHGV7&456DED$··"·%!!!/())/OJNDJKNJDKǨ+`P should be secure enough.
Not likely. Humans are a terrible source of entropy. Anything you come up with that you think seems random, a computer can guess easier than actually trying to find it randomly. |

I did use extremely simple passwords. I guess he just brute forced the private keys, generated the Multisig address and if it contained UTXO sent them to his account.
It's pretty easy, and he can attack all multisigs at once. This is why brainwallets are the dumbest idea ever... |

My Red BitFurys are not recognized by MuM 3.3.4 BFGMiner 4.7.0. I've tried MuM's Scan Hardware but they don't get picked up. Win7 Device Manager sees all of them, e.g. Bitfury BF1 USB Miner (COM100). Anything I can try? TIA
These units tend to crash if they're probed for anything else, so you need to make sure you don't use -S all (or any other -S <driver> :all), and do use -S bigpic:allTo un-crash them, a power cycle is needed first. |

If the amount I simply will never get back in shelved shares exceeds 5% then it would have made more logical sense to mine straight pps at 5%. This is true, if you trust the PPS pool to take on that risk and not run off with the bitcoins... Are there any PPS pools left? Of course luck is simply that, luck. However given that bitcon is a true no house edge system then there must be 50% of the people as "winners" to offset the 50% as "losers". Not quite. Stale blocks (which are the only reason shelved shares won't reach 0%) are wasted hashing on the network. So nobody "wins" there. Actually I never thought about this but: Do shelved shares "depreciate" in value as difficulty goes up, or are they paid at the value they had in terms of finding a solution when they were mined? They're counted as a percentage of block subsidy. So they're paid based on the original difficulty, but once the block subsidy halves, they lose half their apparent value also. |

can anyone explain why i have a coinbase address showing up on BFgminer for a pool that is not in the conf file or bat file?  BFGMiner automatically configures itself to failover to solomining if your specified pool(s) go down. You'll find the coinbase address in question in your Bitcoin Core wallet. If you really don't want this (why?), you can disable it with --no-local-bitcoin |

The following will be posted on the Eligius, BTCGuild and P2pool threads. How willing are the pool operators to implement this? Is it hard? Any downsides? Please discuss My position is that every periodic payment should be done using deterministic key pair generation. Of course this includes all mining payouts. The way this would work is that instead of generating a normal private/public key pair and giving the Bitcoin address of the public key to your mining pool for payout you would generate an extended private/public key pair and give the extended public key to the mining pool.
An extended public key contains within it the first public key and information on how to generate an entire sequence of public keys that correspond to the same key pair sequence that is generated by the extended private key. So the mining pool would send your first payment to the first public key, your second payment to your second public key, your third payment to your third public key, etc.
Meanwhile your client can generate the first private key that corresponds to the first public key, the second private key that corresponds to the second public key, etc. so you can claim/spend the BTC when you are ready.
This way every single periodic payment can be sent to a unique public address. Cool, right?
However, I do not know of a single pool that supports this payment mechanism. I do not keep up with all the various mining pools having given up mining at the end of the GPU mining era myself. So, if there is a pool that supports this please let me know.
All miners should demand this from every pool they use and only use pools that support this mechanism. This has been planned for Eligius for a while. Things are just slow moving lately. |
