1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: will Bitcoin still have value if banks adopt the underlying technology? on: May 30, 2016, 08:48:33 PM
Bitcoin might become irrelevant in the distant future but it's far from that stage now. Even if the banks make similar technology, the amount of control the banks would want could put most people off. A lot of people use Bitcoin, simply because it's not controlled by the banks.
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I benefit from btc? on: May 30, 2016, 08:41:22 PM
The fact that it's not created from debt like fiat currency, makes it very different from just standard electronic money.

So you can benefit from the fact that it's not apart of our current corrupted financial system.

kodeon.CEO, please check your "MY MESSAGES" tab at the top of the page.

Thank's for the help, now when running the walletapp after running the factomd program, the CLI outputs the following "ERROR Reading config file!" I've tried doing a search on my drives, seems the file does not exist.

Is there something I need to do that I'm missing?

Anyone else having issues with the GUI? Won't install on my system (Win 7 64bit).

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor"

Looking into this for you...

Hi AlanX thanks for looking into it, do you have any news on the issue? Tried re-downloading the software but still seem to be having the same problem.

Yeah I show no balance either. "21603 Confirmations Balance = 0.000000"

I logged in several weeks ago and my balance was there.  Since it isn't just you I wouldnt be too worried.

Ah ok I see, just thought I'd ask. Guess we will have to wait for a response from Koinify, I've emailed them as well.

It seems my koinify wallet has a balance of 0.00 for some reason with no transactions out, I brought a fair amount of factoids so I'm a little worried. Anyone else have the same issue?
8  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Kraken Accepting MtGox Bankruptcy Claims on: May 01, 2015, 09:58:09 PM
If you have a Kraken account (or create one), you can submit a ticket for this issue (a screenshot helps). There does seem to be some kind of issue with the MtGox claims site where certain users are finding that buttons aren't clickable. We are working with the trustee on the behalf of our clients to get this resolved.

Thanks for the advice and letting me know. I have made an account and sent a message to customer support. They sent me an email back and informed me that they have had a large number of tickets regarding gox so I guess I just need to wait and see.

Hi, is any one having problems with the log in system at MtGox?

Here is what happened to me. I started the claiming process, went through the enter password and changing the password and got to the fill out form. Unfortunately I wasn't sure what amount I had to put in the claim, so I got this information a couple hours later when I got back home.

Unfortunately I was logged out automatically (due to being in active for longer period of time) and can now no longer log in, neither with my old password, nor with the new one.

Am I the only one? Any suggestions here what I could do about it?

May I ask what browser you are using? I cannot seem to get past the changing password step, the button "Change Password" seems to have no functionality for me. I have tried chrome and internet explorer.
10  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt. Gox online claim filing system on: April 26, 2015, 04:32:45 PM
Is anyone else having issues getting passed the change password prompt on the gox online filing system?

I'm trying to use the system but the initial change password that it prompts you for first does not work, the button at the bottom of the page "Change Password" has no functionality. I have tried with several browsers, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

If this happens for everyone, this will effectively render the system useless.

why are you not using kraken out of interest?

going to be submitting my claim today if i get time!

Thanks for letting me know, just went to kraken and created and account to try it. Seems like their button just takes me to the same site to log in and change the password which still does not work even though I know the old password. The button at the bottom just has no functionality, also it says with the new password that its not strong enough, not matter what you put in the box.

I've been using Bitstamp ever since the gox went down, I just got an email from gox the other day, they provided a link to their claiming site "claims.mtgox.com" so this is why I went straight to there.

Is anybody else having issues changing the directory where the blockchain is stored? I'm trying to save space on my SSD but the command -datadir=d:\ with a directory does not seem to have any effect on where the wallet looks for and saves the blocks.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Exchanges: their way of using a fractional-reserve and generate inflation on: February 17, 2015, 03:55:15 PM
I guess fundamental thing with the original post is that exchanges just make money from fee's for providing a service. Banks make money with other peoples money, they have different business models, although banks do have fees as a revenue stream also. Bitstamp probably just holds peoples Bitcoins in cold storage and makes backups. If Bitstamp was to start using other peoples Bitcoins to do things, then that could be illegal potentially (I'm not a legal expert but that's an educated guess). Which in turn would hold them liable.

Then again coinbase might be a different story as they are not just any exchange according to them, as it does function slightly more like a bank account and who knows what they are up to.
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Black Arrow 28nm 100Ghash Bitcoin ASIC from $0.49/GH/s on: January 18, 2015, 12:00:31 AM
Just managed to get 2 x new back plane and 20 x new hash boards from BA and after a a days work of taking all the heat sinks off the hash boards and then put the two back planes in and managed to make 5 hash boards to test.

The 2 new back planes both don't work, they just turn on and then the fans spin at max RPM.

I tested the 5 other new hash boards I made with one of my other X3's with the back plane it came with and ended up 2 of the 5 hash boards did not work.

Thanks BA.

Open them up at the top.  Remove the fans.  Lift the metal tab slightly and pull the hash boards out one at a time (Obviously unplugged from the wall).  Insert one hash board at a time and power up each time.  See if one of the hash boards cause the problem.  You can then RMA the hash board that causes the miner to stop working.  And mine with the others in the meantime.

Thanks man, will definitely give it a try.
16  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Black Arrow 28nm 100Ghash Bitcoin ASIC from $0.49/GH/s on: November 10, 2014, 05:00:16 PM
Just thought I'd let everyone know, I have received two X3's. One unit has a fault as I turned it on with power supply so that's me 1 T/h down already before I even begin. I did not receive any compensation they said they were going to give me. I just hope the others don't catch fire.

1 more miner failed after 24 hours and another one dropped 50% hash rate. Think I'm going to have to RMA 3 of the 4 miners. But considering the price of shipping back and the price I'm going to have to pay for VAT again, I don't even know if it is going to be worth it.

Welcome to the forums fabiola! thought I'd just take my time to give you the low down on the industry at the moment and some general information, plus other new people might want to take a read.

Bitcoin Mining

Don't bother invest any money into mining at the moment. The big players have taken over the situation at the moment, I'm talking mines that are worth hundreds of thousands if not millions. With the difficultly that has risen to a massive number you will never make a return on investment at the current Bitcoin price. Unless you would like just to do it as a hobby and learn how it works then go for it.

If you do want to try mining I would stay away from these companies:

BlackArrow
Butterfly Labs

I'm sure there are lots of others but these two are in the lime light at the moment. So make sure you do your research before investing. Right now though I would suggest buying and holding or trading. The reason I say hold is because I would wait until the industry has matured a bit, there are a lot of start-up companies bringing out products with hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of venture capital so it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table within the next couple years.

Bitcoin Infrastructure

There are a lot of new Bitcoin companies out there that are making Bitcoin easier to obtain and easier to use. For example coinbase which allows you to buy Bitcoins right away into an account. Around some of these new companies such as Circle who are trying to introduce things like Bitcoin banking. Which I think is absolutely ridiculous, Bitcoin was never meant to be banked.

You need to remember that most of these companies have been started by ex PayPal or ex Visa/MasterCard employee's etc. and they want their hands on your Bitcoins. So do yourself a favour and BE YOUR OWN BANK. Use your Bitcoins with companies that you really think are giving you a good service/benefit.

Bitcoin Security

I'm not going to go to in depth here as I'm not sure of your technical knowledge but I thought it would be a good idea to give you a base idea about Bitcoin security. What you need to know about is how to secure your wallet. I suggest if you have a wallet from Bitcoin Core wallet then you can encrypt your wallet. I suggest using a strong password, I'm talking at least 10 characters minimum, with special characters, capital, lower case letters and numbers. Write it down on a bit of paper to secure it offline so you won’t forget it.

If you want even more security in your wallet I suggest using Bitcoin Armoury wallet which will give you even more security options. If you wanted to go even further I would buy two USB sticks, use the Truecrypt (or VeraCrypt) software to create encrypted file containers on both the USB sticks, I would advise using three different types of encryption with again strong passwords, then back up a copy of your encrypted wallet to each USB stick and then store them somewhere safe. If you don’t know how to use the software there are plenty of guides out there, I’ll give you one for TrueCrpyt:

Link: http://www.howtogeek.com/108501/the-how-to-geek-guide-to-getting-started-with-truecrypt/

I've heard of other possible attacks of people attacking your RAM while your wallet is open and is stored unencrypted but I can assure you that is a fairly sophisticated attack and I doubt you will have to worry about that. Just make sure you have decent anti-virus/malware software. I think on the forums some where there is a thread that explains how to 100% secure you’re Bitcoins. Here’s the link:

Link: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=17240.0
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this gives you a bit more understanding on what’s happening in the Bitcoin world and a bit of information. If you want to help Bitcoin grow just try and introduce it to your friends, if you let your friends know about the benefits of using Bitcoin they are more likely to try it!

After writing this I’ve realised that it might actually be a good idea to create a new thread and just chuck this all in there for anyone to read. If you have any other questions just PM me and I will try and help.

Thanks for all the info kodeon, you legend.
Unfortunately I already have miners (close to turning them off very soon if BTC doesn't go up) , and already have a pre order with BFL Sad
But I'm sure things will pick up, everyone on here says it's only the beginning in a way Smiley

It's cool no worries. If I was you I would try and get a refund from BFL and then spend the money on Bitcoins, I'm not too sure if they are refunding but I know they used to. I think at the moment is a good time to start buying. The price I personally think is low. Also I'm not sure how much mining power you have but I would try and get every last bit of Bitcoins that you can as we all know Bitcoin is finite so who knows what will happen in two years, I guess only time will tell.

I don't think TOR is as slow as it used to be, if your really concerned about privacy when doing any sort of transactions or what ever you want to do, I would just deal with the wait times. They are not that bad any more, TOR gets a thumbs up from me. I think there are some free VPN services out there, never tried them but I know they exist.
