261  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stable Coins are a Threat for Bitcoin? on: October 20, 2019, 10:32:37 PM
they are all centralized and highly risky, there is no threat in that for a decentralized bitcoin like bitcoin. specially from dozens of them that keep popping up like mushrooms these days.
the only thing that could only cause a short term drama and that only in price of bitcoin is tether and that is only because it is oldest and biggest otherwise they have nothing to do with bitcoin.

Additionally, stablecoin's centralization issue is getting worst by the emergence of new stablecoin competitors saturating the whole market but negating the effects that supposedly makes a "threat" to Bitcoin. Also, if I'm not mistaken, most of these stablecoins has no fix supply as compared to Bitcoin - the reason some of them can just easily release or mint new tokens overnight thus adding more cloud in the "fiat backing" credibility issue.
So it is more than that rental fee.

263  Economy / Economics / Re: Fear of Facebook spurs Federal Reserve to build its own digital currency on: October 20, 2019, 01:08:47 PM
This is an interesting story that would merit the U.S. Government's attention and stance towards cryptocurrency! I understand this is a brilliant idea but I think the U.S. will conduct necessary studies first before pursuing it because I think it could trigger a massive disruption across world economies along with their financial institutions and they also have to consider  the repercussions that might occur resulting from it - not to mention the fact that it could also hurt its own economy by affecting financial sectors and banking industry.

Also, I am thinking that implementing such plan could also trigger a cold war era crypto race as superpower countries in the likes of China and Russia would not want top be left behind in this niche and would ultimately build their own crypto to match that of the U.S. to maintain status quo  and their influences over global affairs and economics.
264  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sports Betting Contest on: October 20, 2019, 12:51:54 PM
I prefer E-Sports and NBA games since these two are one of the most hottest!

I also noticed that editing a post few minutes after it was posted and have minor changes cannot be tracked? Can someone help me with this, please.

I am planning not to allow edits. They can just quote their previous post and then predict again.

I think maybe you could solve this editing issue if each prediction post would be paired with signed message by the participants with their corresponding Ethereum or Bitcoin addresses.

Smiley

266  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hackers targeting Tor on: October 19, 2019, 03:42:05 AM
Though I find this a little bit ironic, this incident only shows the importance of downloading apps from official sites only and not be enticed easily by supposedly trusted fellow netizens with their app recommendations!

I think netizens should also exercise more vigilance and always be cautious to prevent these types of incident from happening again but I think this will never change until there are people who are gullible - the reason why this kind of intrusions will never stop! Imho.

267  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Google's Quantum Computer Destroy Bitcoin? on: October 19, 2019, 02:21:21 AM
According to external sources, Google has already designed a Quantum Computer that's much more powerful than its competitors (like IBM and other mainstream companies working on this). Nonetheless, do you think that Google's Quantum Computer will be able to destroy Bitcoin in the future? Or will the pioneer cryptocurrency adapt itself against this new trend? Huh

There is this pervading fear among many Bitcoin enthusiasts/hodlers/lovers about the threat of supercomputers (quantum) that can possibly decipher the blockchain and destroy Bitcoin at a glance. However, up to now, no one can give us a proof that what Google developed so far can really do this. Maybe this is just akin to spreading FUD and partly marketing the technology that Google has at hand. I am sure that Google stands to make billions with this development and they are in fact withholding information so people will talk about this themselves...getting free promotions along the way. Genius! I am sharing this good article on Google's quantum technology that can possibly clarify this thing and erase our fears.

I guess there is nothing to worry about at least not at the moment because I believe Google won't allocate its resources just to destroy a cryptocurrency and for what?

Also, if ever time will come it would be possible to crack Bitcoin with quantum computers, I guess developers, together with the community would by far already have applied technologies to Bitcoin to make is quantum resistant and since there has been crytpo projects that supposedly claimed to be quantum resistant, maybe the developers could use it or improve upon those technologies to make it applicable to Bitcoin.
268  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin: "Maybe Is a Partial Store of Value" on: October 19, 2019, 01:39:20 AM
This is a little bit funny. While admitting that Bitcoin can be a store of value -- at least partially -- Mr Roubini remains adamant on his old position against Bitcoin, in other words nothing has changed despite his admission which can just be influenced by people he was with in that conference. Well, as they are saying, there will always be two sides to the coin and in any human innovations there will be people whose role is to warn of possible impeding doom if we continue the change we are into. I have a great respect for this man because he is actually making some sense in many areas and I think we should also give space for people like him as their inputs can still be useful. However, don't get me wrong, it does not mean we have to follow what he is saying.

So is it really partial or full?

What else he can do, despite the volatility of bitcoin it should be clear now that bitcoin is not going to disappear and when we add that in the countries in which the fiat currency has crashed bitcoin has been used by a small minority to save their wealth, then it is obvious that bitcoin is a store of value.

I have no problems admitting that the volatility of bitcoin does not make it a very effective store of value compared to gold but it can still perform that function in the case of an emergency.

Quote
A store of value is the function of an asset that can be saved, retrieved and exchanged at a later time, and be predictably useful when retrieved. More generally, a store of value is anything that retains purchasing power into the future.
As per above definition from Wikipedia, I believe Bitcoin satisfies those requirements thus making it an absolute store of value and not "partial" as what he stated.

I guess we will see this assertion more clearly defined once Bitcoin reached its max supply which by that time, its worth would have surpassed Gold and other precious metals value!
269  Economy / Economics / Re: Millennial generation are screwed! on: October 18, 2019, 10:18:54 PM
@OP, Do you think anyone cares about what millenials do? I guess we cannot blame what has  become of them for it has been influenced by older generations and its a part of human evolution! Might as well blame older generations for producing millenials based on your description.

After all, no generation has even been perfect and always had its shortcomings! I guess most people wouldn't spend their time contemplating all about millenials when they have other important things to attend to -"every man himself". Smiley
270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Half of the airport’s workstations infected with a crypto mining software on: October 18, 2019, 06:08:23 AM
This is a lesson for I.T personnels - to ensure that optimal defenses of their mission critical systems are always in place! Had that malware not been discovered earlier or otherwise it had another nasty malicious payload to wreak havoc on those systems, the damage could stop airport operations because such a security breach could halt flight schedules worldwide thereby causing a ripple effect on international flights schedules.

I guess its the job of the system administrator to maintain the security of those workstations and I think he/she should take the blame for it. Moreover, this also shows the importance of having regular security audits to endure these types of malware cannot breach computer systems.
271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and kiddie porn on: October 17, 2019, 11:22:01 PM
This is what I'm trying to say, that media outlets failed to emphasize the key role of Bitcoin in identifying those perpetrators yet none has ever surfaced discussing its importance!

well, they did report that transaction from exchanges were used to trace the money? I see what you mean, they could've made that an explicit positive aspect, but that's little different to if paypal or the banking   system was used. Arguably, they could have focused on people that were not caught, but maybe the FBI didn't release the full details. Not sure.

Well,  I think we'll just hope some content writers from the crypto-community would make a positive note about it and write some positive stuff about Bitcoin, at least to balance the public's perception about it.

I was thinking of a good title like this - "How Bitcoin help caught hundreds of pedophiles and disabled a child sexual abuse website!" or maybe you could suggest something more catchy?  Grin
272  Economy / Economics / Re: Millennial generation are screwed! on: October 17, 2019, 10:58:08 PM

If we base our data on the above chart which shows that millennials account for about 2.4 billion out of 7.7 billion total world population, I think most of your assumptions about them may not hold true! A classic case of stereotyping.

273  Economy / Economics / Re: Cryptocurrency and Remittences on: October 17, 2019, 10:15:20 PM
But you'd be really surprised to learn that Bitcoin remittance is already a thing. It's how I send money home (not directly, but selling my bitcoin instead, for example, is soooo much cheaper than sending dollars home). In fact, choosing to accept Bitcoin as payment and using that to send money home? It's not just saved me on fees, the sell rate is so good I end up sending home a bit more that I sold.

Indeed! Bitcoin is now a very viable tool for remittance purposes because it has an  increasing number of local merchants or remittance partners willing to accept it in exchange for local currency whereas Libra has yet to establish its major partners and don't even have grassroots local adoption and localized infrastructure and partners to support it, that is why I doubt they will be serious in conquering the remittance industry.

I really agree with idea of Libra tapping into remittance market.

For Libra to achieve presence in the remittance industry, they must do partnership first on local brick and mortar remittance centers that will enable it to be exchanged for fiat money or local currency but I'm afraid this hasn't been done, not  to mention that they didn't even bother to get a major partnership with a well known international remittance company which could hasten their plans to conquer the industry if ever they have plans about it.

274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and kiddie porn on: October 17, 2019, 09:42:01 PM
Honestly this is one of the most neutral news I have seen related to the crypto industry more specifically towards Bitcoin. I've read the whole article hoping for some silent jabs against Bitcoin being the main tool for this crime to happen but I was surprised there was none found in the whole article.

this is the sort of subtle editorial-based slant that corporate media like The Guardian use.

they could have covered any number of positive stories about Bitcoin, especially in their technology section. But instead, they choose articles with a negative connotation, then report on it in a dry and dispassionate way. Readers are left to draw their own conclusion, but when they've heard another 20 crime based Bitcoin stories already in the last 5 years, they will come to the conclusion that The Guardian's financial firm clients (who buy advertising in The Guardian) want: Bitcoin bad ...

This is what I'm trying to say, that media outlets failed to emphasize the key role of Bitcoin in identifying those perpetrators yet none has ever surfaced discussing its importance!

Could it be there is a grand conspiracy to discredit Bitcoin and portray it as the ultimate villain and the cause of all evil? Or either they are just sensationalizing news that has Bitcoin involvement to sold their stories? Or this may be a product of subjective reporting which are often biased against Bitcoin! Imho. Sad
275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Republican Congressman, Warren Davidson repels Libra and favors Bitcoin on: October 17, 2019, 03:14:29 PM
Now that there has been an exodus of Facebook's Libra major partners in the likes Paypal, Visa and Mastercard, I guess most U.S. lawmakers would find it very encouraging to sustain its clampdown on the social media giant's proposed cryptocurrency that has stirred a lot of controversy!

Moreover, this exodus would even make it more harder for Facebook and its existing partners to convince the U.S. Government to give them the go ahead signal and approval so that I guess this is a losing battle for Libra that could have a negative effects on all its proponents once the dust settles. Imho. Undecided
276  Economy / Economics / Re: Millennial generation are screwed! on: October 17, 2019, 02:50:23 PM
First they spend more time on video games than any other generation, an average gen millennial spend 8 hours on games everyday! Ridiculous!
Of course! Most see it as a form of recreation and technological advancements makes those games more enjoyable and entertaining than ever!

They basement dwellers
Most are now in residential suites. Smiley

They deep on student loan
Most of them likely have car loans.

They have no job security
Correct! But they are now more empowered than ever!

Now they spend more money on bitcoin than all generation!
Not true! Most likely they've saved more money on Bitcoin than all generations especially on 2017 bull run. Smiley

It never get bored millennial has been on the headlines since the god know when it all began.
Millennials are the stars of the century!

Can crypto make millennial more screwed or otherwise?
Seems like a double barreled question. I guess it depends on your perspective but my answer is no. Smiley

But come to think of it, most millenials are the driving force of today's economy example of which is Facebook's founder - Mark Zuckerberg and others who have contributed on today's technological revolution. So in essence, stereotyping millenials isn't a good idea.
277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and kiddie porn on: October 17, 2019, 02:09:08 PM
Well, we should be thankful for Bitcoin and blockchain technology because if it wasn't conceived, the world will be overwhelmed by these sick bastards who prey on  children's innocence! I think they thought that BTC would be safe to use  and could give them absolute privacy thus were encouraged by it to do their evil deeds thinking that by using this technology, it could make them anonymous and unstoppable!

But in fact,  if they have not been careful enough, they could be traced through their Bitcoin transactions and their identities could also be revealed - that could connect them to that monster website, which I think will give a strong evidence to guarantee an indictment!
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Day Trading or Long-term Hodl? on: October 17, 2019, 01:19:24 PM
Take a look at this, you must think that the OP is doing a promotion. Quite a lot of discussion about DX on the thread made.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;threads;u=2161267;sa=showPosts

Seems this is a trending style of those who want to allegedly shill their coins  but it doesn't matter now because most members of the community are well aware of that! Might as well make a thread to compare his favorite coin (for shilling) and a close competitor and let the community engage in a discussion of both project's merits and features and see which is best among them.

Anyways, I think its best to day trade if you have enough time and want short term gains otherwise you could hold provided that the token/coin your hodling is very promising that it has a high probability of gaining huge ROI's in mid to long term period.
279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Brexit became the reason of Bitcoin’s downfall? on: October 17, 2019, 10:11:12 AM
I cannot think of any possible explanation that would support what OP is suggesting! I guess the thread title is a little bit overactive and it seems to suggest Brexit would create a Bitcoin apocalypse which sounds horrifying and at the same time ridiculous!  Grin

On the contrary, I think Brexit would rather contribute to Bitcoin's dominance in the crypto scene as an alternative to Euro especially on the remittance industry.
280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Legality effect on: October 17, 2019, 06:20:11 AM
my mind always asks, if one day bitcoin gets legal regulation, and is recognized all over the world. will fiat currencies continue to work?

Assuming Bitcoin achieved global adoption and acceptance, I think fiat currencies will still exist because there will always be a demand for it as a medium of exchange! Hypothetically, as long as there is one person in this world willing to accept or prefer fiat as a payment or a medium of exchange, then I guess fiat will never go extinct because there is  still a demand for it.
