1  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is there a Max number of Standard units you can run off one Full Unit? on: October 15, 2021, 12:27:08 AM
I have a Full Unit that I'm running one Standard unit off of right now.  I'm planning on adding one more but if I use a USB hub can I add more then TWO Standard units to the Full Unit?

dWiGhT

Yes you can.

Is that 7 Standards on one Full unit? We have not event tested that many internally  Cheesy

Yes jstefanop, that is 7 standard units running through a USB hub to 1 Full unit.  Grin

Any opinion on the USB hub to use?

This is the one I used from amazon thats in the picture link above. *iDsonix USB 3.0 Hub, 7-Port 12V / 2A Powered USB Hub with Individual Switches 5Gbps High Speed Transfer BC1.2 (5V2.4A) Fast Charge USB Splitter

I did find that even if I unplugged the power for the USB hub it did not effect the communication or hash rate of the units.

FYI

After having units running from Batch 1 and units from batch 2 I have found a difference in temps and fans speeds from the two batches.
Although I was concerned I'm not to concerned now, just for fan longevity of batch 1 fans.

It all started when I added a batch one unit to my batch 2 setup
Batch 1 Setup https://imgur.com/a/A0KMm1H
Batch 2 Setup not as fancy, https://ibb.co/s9S5NVc

All batch 2 unit temps were 68c-69c and fan speeds 2800-2900rpm constant across the 7 units from batch 2
When I added a batch 1 unit to the other 7 units one unit was 62c-63c and fan speed 3000-3100rpm (so lower temp with faster rpm)

The question to myself was why is one unit so far apart from the others (originally didnt know it was the batch 1 unit yet)

Through process of trouble shooting I isolated the lower temp unit and swapped the fan for one of the others of the consistent temps and fan speed like the others. I found out that it was not the unit but the fan itself as the lower temp and faster rpm followed the fan from unit to unit.

I further looked at the fans closer and notice a distinctive difference.
Batch 1 (4 units) I got had these fans with smaller gauge wires and a different wiring pattern.

Blue yellow red black
https://ibb.co/GTGwJkH

Batch 2 units had larger gauge wires
Black red yellow blue
https://ibb.co/NZkKXWB

Both fans do have the same order at the plug to the board just different going into the fan. (different brand of fan I take it)

In conclusion the difference between the fans from Batches is quite noticeable so if your seeing this too, here is what I found.

Hey everyone, support question.
Loving my miners, and they have generally been reliable, but recently had an issue.

Overnight, my miners seemingly went "offline" in that they were no longer accessible by the web-ui, and stopped sending hashes to my pool (0 reported speed).

However, the physical units themselves were still purring away, red LED and yellow LED's flashing, as well as the network port.
My router showed the device as online and identifiable as well.

I tried setting up with HDMI and keyboard but that seems to only work if they are already plugged in on boot.
So in this instance I got a black screen with no signal.

What should I do to safely shut these two units down other than pull the plug, knowing that the node seems to still be running?
Also, what in gods' name are those things 'hashing' if they are offline and sending out no data?

Thanks!

I too have had the same issue happen multiple times with the some units randomly going inactive on dashboard and monitor giving a black screen with no signal after some period of time running. Reboot fixes both when one or both happens. Have flashed SD card no change. Happens on both old and new update version.

Has anyone tried adding 3 stand alone units to one controller?

https://imgur.com/a/A0KMm1H

Yes no problems
Nice setup. Would you mind sharing build details? Parts used?

Thanks, Here is the parts I used:

Parts list:
*LIAN LI O11 Dynamic XL ROG Certificated - White Color - Tempered Glass on the Front, and Left Side - E-ATX, ATX Full Tower Gaming Computer Case
*2x CORSAIR HX Series HX750 CP-9020137-NA 750W ATX12V v2.4 / EPS12V 2.92 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply
*Ethernet Extension Cable,RJ45 Male to Female Screw Panel Mount CAT6/5e/5 Shielded Network LAN Extender Cord Connector
*iDsonix USB 3.0 Hub, 7-Port 12V / 2A Powered USB Hub with Individual Switches 5Gbps High Speed Transfer BC1.2 (5V2.4A) Fast Charge USB Splitter
*2x GIM KB-24 RGB Case Fans, 5 Pack 120mm Quiet Computer Cooling PC Fans, Music Rhythm 5V ARGB Addressable Motherboard SYNC/RC Controller, Colorful Cooler Speed Adjustable with Fan Control Hub
*HDMI Cable Right Angle 90 Degree Elbow HDMI Cord
*ESCAM T10 10 inch TFT LCD 1024x600 Monitor with VGA HDMI AV BNC USB for PC (Apollo BTC HDMI output is not compatible with this monitor, Hoping for a video output fix as this is a known problem that the HDMI output does not work on all monitors)
*USB wireless keyboard and mouse.
* The case has a few mods to fit and run cables and I fabricated a custom mounting bracket to suspend the Apollo units with in the case.

This setup is overkill but it makes for a great focal piece and conversation starter in the house. Its compact, clean, organized, quiet unit to display the hard work that has been put in to building of the Futurebit Apollo BTC from jstefanop and his team, and support the project. Have had a few friends and coworkers place orders in batch 2 and 3 from this. Still waiting to receive a shipping order fulfillment to be shipped from batch 2 to start another project.

Wow Gorgeous setup  Shocked
Kudos to you and thanks!

Wow, that looks awesome. What is your operating temperature?

Thanks,
Ambient temp kept in the house is 20-22c and the units can run in Turbo mode from 59-67c mostly sitting at 65c. and less in balanced or eco.

Damn is that a nice looking setup! I really like the idea of using a computer case for a bunch of miners, wouldn't have thought of that myself. But it looks good and keeps dust out! What are you displaying on that screen except a FutureBit logo?

Thanks,
Yes the case has fan intake filters and helps keep the dust out. The monitor is meant to display the GUi dashboard but as mentioned above not working as intended with this screen option.

Not sure the right way to get pictures up but this worked  Wink

https://imgur.com/a/A0KMm1H

Im REALLY in need of a fix to get the HDMI out put to work on the screen in the case, I know there is an issue that the video will not work on all screens
and low and behold the one I need to work for my custom setup is one of those. HDMI is working on a computer monitor beside my setup but again is there a future fix coming or a work around ideas? driver to install,update....?

At least I can display a FUTUREBIT image on a USB plugged into the screen. Makes for a great conversation starter. (2 co-workers bought units now)

The planing started back in February batch 1, Its been a fun project lots of hours researching varies parts, and cases that could fit the units in, welded up a custom designed stand to hold the units and some case mods to make it all work. Powered by 2 Corsair 750 watt Platinum ATX power supplies. 10 fans, 6 intake and 4 exhaust to make a positive pressure enclosed case. Planning has already stared for Batch 2 units and now batch 3 units.

Really looking forward to a fix! Grin

Is there a way to turn off the flashing red status LED? I find it constantly flashing on my desk really irritating. Could it not be updated so that it only flashes during start up, or if there is a problem, and turns off entirely when everything is functioning normally?   (i.e. node + miner both running okay)

It`s good to be able to see the status of the units from the led with out login into it, but I get it I have a hard time with the led light on a smoke detector on the ceiling  Grin . You could cut a small piece of black electrical tape and cover it for the time being.

A little FYI,

I have 4 units running and 1 unit was always running 10 degrees hotter and fan spinning 1800-2000 rpm faster than the others right out of the box.
Solution that I found was the hotter unit had a loose heat sink. If you turn the unit over there is a metal plate with 5 screws. This one unit the 5 screws were loose. I tightened them up obviously not to tight but tight enough. Turned unit back on and now all have close to matching temps and fans speeds.

Just did update and reboot and miners show inactive ?
1. stopped node
2. stopped miners
3. verified both where not active
4. started update on Web dashboard
5. updated in 2 min all went good.
6. started miners all going good as you can hear the fans spool up.
7. PROBLEM dashboard shows NO hashrate, NO Watts, status showing all 4 units inactive with no info, pool status inactive
-front red led slow flashing on all units, orange/yellow lights on bottom of all units flashing, all units green light flashing and also the other solid green,
- login into Slushpool account and it shows active hashrates no issues on that end
8. stopped miner and node and confimed it stopped
9. clicked on reboot, system rebooted everything the same as above miners workings confirmed in slushpool but all in showing inactive on web dashboard.

Any suggestions and anyone else with this issue?
And no issues with internet connection

Update should have taken way longer than two minutes. Sounds like it did not complete all the way. Try re-flashing SD card and re-doing the update and see if you have the same issue.
*UPDATE*
Re-flashed SD card using (balenaEtcher) and removed SSD so not to lose my synced blocks. Rebooted just the full node unit on its own. Unit booted up but lost HDMI output signal to monitor (has happen before).  Work around to shut down unit nicely is to grab my laptop and login in thru router IP address dashboard and shut down unit. To get the HDMI working again it seem that you have to not only shut down the unit in the dashboard but ALSO (at least for me) have turn off the power supply too. HDMI output working again, shutdown miner and unit. Reinstalled SSD. Powered up all 4 units. Verified miners and node dashboard info working and correct, all good. Turned off miners and node, tried the update again (updated completed in 3min 17sec) reset pool info and all is back to normal.
Thanks Jstefanop

Cool, yea must have been a bad/corrupted build on the UI during the update. Will probably switch to pre-built releases in the future instead of doing updates this way since it’s more prone to random errors.

FYI getting hdmi to work if your monitor loses signal usually works if you just power on/off the monitor.

Yea I tried that to but no luck with powering on off the monitor, could be something with my monitor when looking for signal.
Will be picking peoples brains soon to get a solution on HDMI output for other monitor setups, project photos to follow soon to help understand why I really need a fix Wink
