161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: October 29, 2014, 02:20:19 PM
I think the issue is that the network hashrate is calculated from the diff, which is I think is based on blocks in the last 24 hours, I believe it's just (diff/(60*1024^2)), while I think the pools calculate their hashrate based on average diff of blocks in the last 10 or 30 minutes, so they are basing the two numbers on a different starting point. With that being said, it does seem strange how it always seems like the sum of the pools is greater than the reported network hashrate, but maybe that just has to do with the fact that I usually check it in the morning time of the USA.

If you look at the pie chart here: http://minexmr.com/pools.html
It says the network rate is 18.6 Mh/s while the sum of the known pools hashrate is 22 Mh/s, and that's not including solo miners as well as private/unknown pools Huh

In any event, if you want to support the network, you probably shouldn't mine at moneropool.com, I think this much is obvious...

Let's write a recommendation "do not mine on moneropool.com" at the first 'intro' ('sticky') page of this thread!
162  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: October 29, 2014, 09:09:06 AM
What's going on in the Monero network?

Network Hash Rate: 13.75 MH/sec

There is literally no way to directly measure the network hash rate. I think the pool display uses an estimate based on difficulty but I'm not sure. The difficulty is calculated based on an estimate over the past 12 hours. The hash rate for each pool is based on 10 minutes. So when the hash rate fluctuates or moves between pools you can get some very inconsistent estimates.

Whatever the measure, it is too high for a pool to have more than 50% of total hash rate. I am comfortable for any pool to have less than 25%.

Rather saying, http://monero.crypto-pool.fr/ has 3.31 MH/sec of Network Hash Rate: 14.25 MH/sec - join it with
https://moneropool.com/ that has 9.95 MH/sec of Network Hash Rate: 14.27 MH/sec. => we obtain nearly 100% +- 30% total network power depending on network hash rate computation accuracy.

Even if they compute hash rate with some errors, till +-30% or 50% accuracy, ***this is ABNORMAL!!!***

Furthermore, if we look at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.0 (this thread first page),
there are NO moneropool.com LISTED in recommended pools at all!!!!!

Who can explain, WTF happen with Monero?!!

Excellent Monero missive & weekly job, devs!

Quote
3. Excellent progress has been made with an initial blockchain database implementation. The first implementation is using the Lightning Memory-Mapped Database, or LMDB, which is the same high-performance database used by OpenLDAP. We are hopeful that this initial release will be ready for limited testing by next week. You can read more about LMDB here: http://symas.com/mdb/ (it would appear they're in a competition with us for the best looking website of 1995). We are quite confident that this will be the most performant embedded database option for our workloads, but we will be adding additional implementations and comparing their performance going forward.

I am very glad you've selected LMDB because I was studying this db for some my projects and found it's perfect and conceptually right. Also this is right in light of future total 64-bit virtual address space replacement for 32-bit one. Really, mmap & forget! For example, enterprise users can easily upgrade computer's RAM up to 32-64GB to achieve nearly RAM-speed performance for their Monero blockchains. As we know, RAM upgrade is quite cheap novadays.

Also I hope you will use compression inside of LMDB to reduce HDD usage for monero blockchain.

Best wishes and till next week!

Fluffypony & team, respect you!

Good new missive, brand new forum with modern & laconic design, dns checkpoint feature builtin in Monero executables.

Just little confusing, Firefox shows correct https lock icon on https://forum.monero.cc, but broken /!\ alert icon on https://monero.cc, while http://monero.cc redirects to https://monero.cc. Hope you fix that soon.

Respect!

Hello! I'm new here. I'm thinking what the altcoins are worth dealing with. what are the arguments for Monero?

There is a niche on the altcoin market for totally anonymous coin, and a niche for Litecoin replacement, as a back-up coin to Bitcoin.
Monero is the most conceptually right solution for both of that niches.

Really, all other altcoins on the market are just baby toys, except some of Cryptonote family. Monero is now leading coin of Cryptonote family.

Hello to all!

Not been here for a summer vacations time. Does anybody knows why last monero missive @ Aug 16, so two weeks have been passed without a missive? Something wrong?
167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: August 05, 2014, 08:24:08 AM
I'm using latest daemon for 50 days already. And thats 3rd time when blockchain is corrupted. Always after restart of PC and/or after daemon was offline for some hours.

PS: Wish I knew what is the common thing between dota and monero :S

Probably daemon crashing when you shutting down PC, try to run "exit" in a daemon CLI before restart.
Well, last night the PC has crashed... nothing I can do about it once a month its crashing. Probably running daemon which uses 3GB ram is the reason Sad

Don't you say you use 32-bit executables?!

With 64-bit exe, all seems nice. Although I always type "exit" at daemon prompt.

Devs are working on embedded database such as leveldb, with somewhat durability support against your monthly crashes.

Hi, I have a question. I downloaded the wallet zip file. I started up simplewallet and created a wallet.bin file. If I mine to this address can I later put a transaction of my mined coins to an exchange without synchronizing with the network? I don't have much spare disk space to download the entire blockchain (not to mention it's time consuming).

Currently no. To do this, you need Electrum-like app for Monero, storing blockchain on a remote server, *not owned* by you. As I know, there is no such an app for Monero.

Nevertheless, you can mine to Monero address you've just created without downloading blockchain. But exchanges do not typically allow you to mine directly onto their deposit addresses.
169  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XC][OFFICIAL] PoS/Privacy on: July 15, 2014, 12:39:25 PM
I don't understand why PoS coins are more of a concern than PoW?  Doesn't Ghash.io have more than 51% of the hash power on Bitcoin, or very close? If it's possible for a pool to gain 51% or very close to 51% on BITCOIN, then I don't see how any PoW can be safe in the near future.  So far, it seems much easier to attack a PoW than PoS.  Heh?

A couple of years down the road there will be many competing exchanges and most will only hold a small percentage of the outstanding issuance of any coin.  I see this as a problem that corrects itself over time.

Does XC has that tricks to resist 51% staking attack, still being PoS?

His name is Dan.

Seriously if XC did have any problems with POS code, then i'm quite confident that that Dan would fix it in no time.

I'm pretty sure when he sleeps, he dreams lines of code Grin

It is very interesting here, to listen to Dan's authorized opinion Wink Or may be other devs to say a word on this problem?

You are right, pools are the problem of PoW.

But I mentioned, PoS can be attacked even easier, there is no need to possess 51% of all coins, just 51% staking ones. And it makes PoS to be attacked by hidden way.

As with PoW & Ghash.io - there is no possibility to hide such an electricity power, so the problem is 'bright shining', not 'accurately hidden' as in PoS coins.

So, generally speaking, PoS are much more vulnerable, but some tricks may fix it...

Does XC has that tricks to resist 51% staking attack, still being PoS?
171  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XC][OFFICIAL] PoS/Privacy on: July 15, 2014, 11:34:35 AM
POS 51% attack doesn't necessarily acquire 51% coins.

it is possible to initiate such attack by owning 51% STAKING coins.

so if all the coins are in wallet and stake, the network will be secured.

the attack happened to C2 and NAVAJO is same.

the attacker owns a large amount of COINS, but not 51% of ALL COINS. most "investors" deposited on exchanges, cuz ppl do not have much faith in P&D coins. and exchanges do not stake.

so attacker can easily initiate double spend!

i don't think XC has such problem. and XC adopt POS like PPC, that is what i know best.

So as one can conclude, PoW coins are much more resistant, than PoS ones, in general, because 51% PoW attack needs 51% hash power, itself leads to expensive mining equipment & large pools.

But what about XC itself, being PoS coin, situation remains unclear to me... So, it will be very useful if somebody explains how XC behaves in that situation.
172  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XC][OFFICIAL] PoS/Privacy on: July 15, 2014, 10:45:19 AM
I notice someone launched a double spend attack on NAV. I don't want to be alarmist , but just want to check if that is possible with all POS coins?
Might as well clear it up and move on.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=679791.msg7848512#msg7848512

Please let me know if this is not appropriate and I'll delete it   Smiley

I join to the question.

As I predict by intuition (may be wrong), in PoS coin, 51% atack is still available, but one have to possess 51% of coins, not hash power.
So, if total PoS coin's volume has a tendency to be accumulated in few hands, 51% attack is even more dangerous, than for PoW coins,
because PoW requires real money to buy mining equipment. PoS coins do not, just exchange speculations.

Also I heard, 51% PoS holder may do 'stealth' fork, without entire blockchain corruption, and may 'stick' all other holders to his forked blockchain by hidden way.

Correct me, please, and explain, how things are going in XC.
173  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XC][OFFICIAL] PoS/Privacy on: July 15, 2014, 08:52:46 AM
I'm afraid that everyone is waiting for REV2 to have it's final tweaks, it's still running a little late at the moment, be patient, i'm sure Dan is beavering away at the code as we speak, it shouldn't be much longer, watch the price go crazy when it's out. Remember we hit 300k on the 6th when everyone though it was going to be out the next day.

We'll get there. Grin

But I heard REV2's decentralized mixer is already working on the main net. The only feature we are waiting is encrypted messaging, it's on the test net.

Nevertheless, both price & volume are gradually dropping... What we have to wait, if main feature, decentralized mixer, does work already?
174  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - Now on Hitbtc.com on: July 14, 2014, 09:04:32 AM
the best is this:
 - buy 51%
 - sell 51%
 - change your client to not accept new blocks and only build your own chain beginning at the time where you had 51%
 - wait...

obviously its simplyfied (also depends on the implementation)...but as always with basic logic flaws: you cant solve it buy building on top of it...

but i guess you get the point... need a beer now... germany WON!!!! Cheesy

It's very strong assertion. But I am not technical specialist. Can somebody confirm this on all PoS coins?

I did not know this fundamental fact - PoS coins are more vulnerable than PoW ones. Althoug PoSes are brandished as 51% attack-resistant despite!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/324283889/potato-salad?ref=nav_search

(since kickstarter's politics had been changed indeed, that's why potato salad became possible at kickstarter)

what about Monero @ kickstarter?

Work is progressing quite rapidly on a funding system where everyone will be able to fund specific features / tasks. The main reason for donations at present is to enable us and some of the other devs to allocate much larger blocks of time to Monero on an ongoing basis until that system is ready to go:)

I consider kickstarter not as donate source, but as PR's one. Very strong source, see 'salad' link mentioned above - you can google it and discover ***explosive*** WWW effect for FREE.

How many time did Salad Man spend to post kickstarter request? Compare it with much more time you spend to develop your funding system.
Compare audience involved!

Note, FUNDAMENTAL & open source anonymity is the trend novadays. Only you as dev team leader can initiate Monero's kickstarter PR company. Just think about... Wink

Is their politics compatible with Monero goals particulary and crypto-currencies in general?

Could anyone tell me how to check my monero address on the blockchain explorer?
I sent 1xmr to poloniex, how do I check it? I checked the xmr address at minergate.com, it says hash not found.
How long does it take to transfer xmr?

Possibly you forgot payment id. Check our new FAQ thread, whether answer is there, if not, post the question.

Everyone still has a chance to buy XC very cheap (~180k) !! Take your chance, because after few days you wont have this chance, and price never back to this level! Next rise to 350-400, and then price will be stable ~300 for some time. You will mark my words in few days.

I am afraid not about price, but for daily volume. XC was one of the most trading coins on poloniex for a week or more. Today I see:

24-hour Volume: 3.26619118 BTC

https://poloniex.com/exchange/btc_xc

Daily volume fallen down more than 10x times! What happens with XC? Even fucken DRK has:

24-hour Volume: 4.30158745 BTC

https://poloniex.com/exchange/btc_drk

Sad

Polo is like a ghost town these days. OVer 100 BTC traded on MP

But still less, than DRK. Sure, Dan Metcalf indeed has more develop skill than Evan Duffield has. I remember the time both DRK & XC volumes were some 1000-3000 BTC...

Now:

XC: 24 Hr Volume 101.853 BTC

https://www.mintpal.com/market/XC/BTC

DRK: 24 Hr Volume 191.446 BTC

https://www.mintpal.com/market/DRK/BTC

P.S. I am not a troll or a one-coin-holder. I look at market without predilection. What fucking I do think, if XC is flourishing on the market?! I just in some doubt...

Thus far we have received well under 1 BTC in donations, a trivial amount. That means that all of our time and energy and effort is completely self-funded.

We are not sitting on mountains of XMR, this is a cryptocurrency that had an absolutely 100% fair launch. Given the current size of the cryptocurrency market I would argue that it had an even fairer launch than Bitcoin, because tons of people jumped on and mined it from day 1. We had no opportunity to amass any sizeable amount of XMR. Thus, our entire effort is a labour of love and completely because we want to see XMR become useful. If we get no donations, we are unable to spend large amounts of time on it, and we will have to peck away at it in our spare time. If you want to see less "sluggishness" (i.e. more time allocated), then donate. If you haven't donated you have absolutely no room to manoeuvre in this discussion.

fluffypony, I wait to attract to Monero, a friend of mine, person of consequence in info business. The one bit keeping me waiting is your unsociability to our society. But now I see this is just psychologic issue, not political one. So I will resume actions I planned.

***
Meanwhile, all the monero nation! Let us donate to Monero dev team! Call to do that all the pool operators, exchange owners, etc.!!!
It's our shame, that Monero's daily volume is the biggest among exchanges, but dev team received just under 1 BTC!
