Hopefully we will see more competition in that arena.  Centralization can lead to vulnerability.  Disasters happen.
7842  Economy / Speculation / Re: The coming chinese mining boom on: August 01, 2011, 06:03:24 PM
I have to wonder if electricity costs will ruin your calculations. A common report coming from China
is an electricity shortage. The prices, while low compared to us right now, are only going to go up.
So unless your hypothetical students get free electricity I can only imagine that many countries
which are cheap now will go up and perhaps be more expensive then the US based on average
household earnings in the next few years.

So cheap hardware, while an advantage, might not be a big enough offset compared to power and cooling?

Most students in the US have free electricity in the dorms.  I have no idea about China though.

You allowed me to deposit 8 decimal places, but you do not allow me to withdraw 8 decimal places.  Can you guarantee my bitdust remains mine?  I ask because I can't verify myself.  I'm not sure if I'll ever use your exchange again, but if I do, I want to be able to round up my bitdust to an amount you'll allow me to work with.  I am concerned for my satoshis.
7845  Economy / Economics / Re: When will the federal government collapse in the US? on: July 29, 2011, 05:22:41 PM
Fascinating no contest on that the system is coming to an end...

Of course that's the result, there is no "it's not" option.
7846  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is the rally train leaving the station at $14? on: July 29, 2011, 05:20:41 PM
Don't forget that right now Mt Gox is allowing certain privileged traders to exchange with no fees. IMHO they are holding the price down by squeezing micro profits out of trades. This will end in a week or so. Don't forget, there are a lot of new products being released and new announcements of products expected in the next few weeks.

Not true. Us zero fee traders are back up to 0.3% fees as of a few days ago.
Mea Culpa. Privileged traders are trading at 0.3% until August 9 and able to squeeze profits the non privileged traders, thus possibly driving prices down.

First, with 0.3% on both sides, you need close to an eight cent spread to break even.  Second, regardless of fees, if you hold the price against the view of the market, you will lose money.  Quit looking for a conspiracy and you just might see things more clearly.
7847  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Golden Retracement on: July 29, 2011, 06:38:23 AM
It probably doesnt have anything to do with a "Fibonacci retracement" or something like that.

The price is affected by the fact that Dwolla is gone as a payment method, and how much is written about bitcoin in the media.

Its probably going to fall for a little while before recovering.

If the market is uncertain about Dwolla, it matches with the OP's observation:
It's the sign of an uncertain market when there is no breakout, and price continues sideways past the apex.  That seems to be the current circumstance.  The apex of the triangle starting from July 5-6 was reached in the past  few days, and price is continuing sideways right around the starting median ($13.75).

My beginner's study of technical analysis.  Comments and speculation welcome.

Reading charts can tell you what's going on without having to care why.  Of course, if someone manipulates the charts all bets are off.
7848  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Technical Analysis on: July 29, 2011, 06:32:57 AM
Too bad there isn't an exchange where people like S3052 could compete for followers.  People could choose who to follow, and part of their commission would be split evenly among those they follow.  It could integrate charting, publishing analyses, and of course trading.  Too bad I don't have the time or capital to build it.
7849  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is the btc stuck between 13 and 14 USD? on: July 29, 2011, 05:52:22 AM
consolidating and going down again Wink

Depends on where you think the support is Wink

However there are some hefty sell orders on the books at mtgox right now....

The wall at 13.5 has been removed.
7850  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Technical Analysis on: July 29, 2011, 01:11:29 AM
Let's let this go... We don't need to get nasty.  S3052 has offered to share the results of his analysis.  I will vote, but if you don't deliver I probably won't again.  Not much loss to you in the big scheme, and no loss for me since I didn't get anything out of sharing my analysis of all the time I've spent studying bitcoin.  That time and effort gives my sentiment value.
7851  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Technical Analysis on: July 28, 2011, 07:30:40 PM
I have reset the poll again.

Vote now. Thanks for your opinion.

Up?
Same?
Down?

Sorry, I'm not going to participate in your polls anymore.  You have stopped providing updates to the public, so I see no reason to provide you with my sentiment.  It probably won't be missed, but I'm disappointed by your greed.
7852  Economy / Speculation / Re: Number of users connected to MtGox Live on: July 28, 2011, 07:11:09 PM
What does the number of users connected to MtGox Live mean exactly? Is this number good or bad?

It indicates how many people are watching the market via one of many sites.... So, not much.
7853  Economy / Speculation / Re: No more free trades on: July 28, 2011, 07:09:12 PM
Yeah because sellers don't have the option to increase their price to compensate for the fees Roll Eyes

You should stick to qualifying absolutes, that usually always works out well for you.

But the buyers will lower their prices to compensate for the fees, so who wins?

Whoever has the stronger desire.  Fees just lower liquidity so people can't put up a spread unless it is fairly large. Without fees, I could buy 2 cents bellow my sell and walk away happy.
7854  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Add2PSU: More power for your mining rigs on: July 27, 2011, 11:22:33 PM
you can just connect the green+one black wire from the atx connector to all the other supplies, and it will also work

Indeed.
7855  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla just called my cellphone... on: July 27, 2011, 10:10:22 PM
They called to verify my name, mailing address and email.

They say they're being proactive about preventing fraud.

I asked if transactions are reversible.

He wouldn't give me details but he told me they're working hard on the TradeHill situation.

Cool stuff eh?

I really hate that they do that.  They are training their customers to give out that info to whoever calls and claims to be Dwolla.  If someone calls and asks for personal information, always ask to call them back and verify the number they give you before you do.
7856  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: On the viability of Dwolla... on: July 27, 2011, 08:37:56 PM
I suspect, however, Dwolla is going to learn that their chosen business model is simply impossible. You cannot make ACH like cash for $0.25 per transaction. One fraudulent transaction in 5,000 will bankrupt you. And if you force your customers to deal with cases where you are defrauded, you're not at all like cash.

This, or they will lower the transaction limits until it is feasible.
7857  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [PROPOSAL] The Second Bitcoin Whitepaper on: July 26, 2011, 11:38:47 PM
Our blockchain will in no way need to be verified by bitcoin, except when bitcoin enters or leaves.  That can happen much less frequently and carry a much larger transaction fee as incentive.
7858  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [PROPOSAL] The Second Bitcoin Whitepaper on: July 26, 2011, 11:36:27 PM
Our client would still ignore invalid blocks even if they are bitcoin-stamped.

So now every client needs to validate every single block just to be able to ensure that transaction that occurred sometime after that block does not rely on something that is invalidated?

Now you're back into the 'validating transactions is so impractical as to be impossible' scenario.

Validation is orders of magnitude easier than discovering proof of work.  Only our client would do it, and it is something every bitcoin client does.  I don't see a problem.
7859  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [PROPOSAL] The Second Bitcoin Whitepaper on: July 26, 2011, 11:29:19 PM
In order for the above to work though, our blocks can't have a reward, otherwise people will have incentive to overpower it.  In fact, the block finder should pay the transaction fee to lock the chain to bitcoin.  Then, only those who value the security of the block chain have incentive to mine.

I think we could give the miner a transaction fee that is only valid if the rest of the nodes running the new protocol accept the hash in the block. That would give the miner a good incentive to get the exchange rates right.

But do we need another hash race?  Why compete with bitcoiners for hardware?  You're just driving up costs for everyone.
7860  Economy / Speculation / Re: Price rise after the 25 day MtGox 0% trade fee is lifted on: July 26, 2011, 11:23:37 PM
I have been watching http://bitcoin.clarkmoody.com/order-book/# today and it appears that the typical spread between bid and ask orders is greater than $0.04. Is it possible that Mt Gox commissions are now 0.3 percent for all traders?

This was supposed to be tomorrow, wasn't it?

It is tomorrow... It's just risky right now.  Regardless, tomorrow starts in like 40 minutes in bitcoinland.
