561  Economy / Securities / Re: [ANNOUNCE GLBSE] *NEW* PPT.B Pirate Pass Through Bonds on: April 22, 2012, 11:55:19 PM
Wow, someone but some serious BTC into the PPT.A. One person took 500 of the bonds at 1.07, and it looked like a snipe at the end. I think we'll see in future auctions that a few big players (In Bitcoin, at least) will end up with the majority of the bonds. Considering that there are some bonds being sold at the 1.19 point just two days later, that would be a 10% profit (!!!) if that buyer could unload them all. It's Pirate rates with less exposure to default.

Actually, probably the opposite.  The bigger depositors have better change of having their own pirate account, and smaller depositors (especially those with less than pirate's 100 coin minimum have significant chance of getting bonds at reasonable prices, above the 1.07.  If you were bidding 1.19, that's still 9% for the month.  Those selling early have a quick profit, but then still have to do something with their coins.

My opinion is that PPT.B will be even more interesting to watch.

I can guarantee there'll be guys like me(or at least me) who are just rolling weekly mining profits into these bonds. I rolled ~5 days of mining in to PPT.A and plan on rolling 7 days of mining in to PPT.B. This is a damn convenient option for those w/o FS&T accounts. It'll be interesting to see if PPT.A has as much of a frenzy about it during the initial offering.

I use Windows to test new cards. I run my small farm on BAMT.
563  Economy / Securities / Re: [ANNOUNCE GLBSE] 1500 PPT.A Pirate Pass Through Bonds on: April 21, 2012, 06:01:54 AM
I was capturing the order book at one minute intervals up to the trigger (my last scrape about 5 seconds before the issue).  Yes, the 500 bid at 1.07 came in the last two minutes.

With four minutes to go, total bids were around 2850 before going to 3500 and then 4174.  At the close it fell to 3585 and could be due to re-bidding.

Similarly, the cut-off increased from 1.055 to 1.06, 1.07 and then dipped to 1.068.

I squeaked right in at 1.069  Grin Make some money, money!
564  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Building the One ATI 5830 Mining Rig on: April 20, 2012, 11:00:46 PM
Search around for computer assembly guides. Computers these days are pretty simple to assemble. You'll likely waste more time dealing with software issues.

Also, you might want to follow those guides loosely. It would suck to assemble a 1 gpu rig and then realize you want a rig with more gpus in it.

You'll want to make sure to grab an i7 with at least 32GB of ram

You didn't even ask the guy what his plans are for the rig. You trolling?
565  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Why all the interest in 5830s recently? on: April 20, 2012, 05:27:16 PM
exactly why I moved on from them.....simply not enough density possible.

I am with you.   It shows there is no perfect GPU they all have advantages and disadvantages.  I don't regret going with 5970s.  Highest MH/W and awesome density.  I couldn't imagine running a 15 GH/s farm using 5830s.  Thats what 50 GPUs?

Still everyone's needs are different.  If someone is a gamer who wants to mine part-time I would say get a 7970 (or two).  Cooler and quieter than 5970 but I wouldn't want to try and build a farm out of them.

I like a mix of 5970s and 5830s. I use the 5830 to load balance the breakers with my 5970 rigs. 1 5970 rig and 1 5830 rig per 20 amp breaker. Puts me right around 16 amps to keep in line with the 80% load rule.
566  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Why all the interest in 5830s recently? on: April 20, 2012, 04:37:08 PM
uggggg, but they are power hogs.

Anyone has actually verified and can quantify this affirmation?
I have some doubts that they actually consume the same of a 5870.

BTW: I have read somewhere here yesterday that someone has been able to undervolt a Sapphire 5830. I have one, and a Xfx too, and I was not able to undervolt any, both using Trixx and Afterburner. Maybe mines are locked?

I achieve 1.94 MH/w with my HD 5830s. 10 cards, 3 GH/s, 1550w from the wall. They aren't as efficient as my watercooled HD 5970 rigs which are running 2800 MH/s and pulling 1100w from the wall but they are cheaper per MH. I paid $105 per 5830 and they run right around 300 MH/s for 2.86 MH/$. The 5970s were roughly $425 with waterblocks and they run around 700 MH/s, so roughly 1.65 MH/$. This doesn't include the ~$400 in radiators and pumps that cool my 8 5970s.. The beauty of the 5970 rigs though are that once I got them setup they just chug along and I haven't had to worry about them. The 5830s however.. I have two with fans that will likely fail before the summer is out and I'm sure I'll have a few more fans fail that currently sound fine.

5830s will quickly get you MH/s for cheap. You'll pay through the nose in power but they sure do make nice heaters in the winter.
567  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT version 0.5 - Easy USB based mining Linux with farm wide management tools on: April 20, 2012, 03:19:28 AM
Has anyone yet been able to get 8 gpus going in BAMT?

LittleDuke said he had 8 GPUs working on the 64-bit version.

Is this 64-bit version publicly available? I've got a pair of quad 5970 rigs that I'd like to get on BAMT. I like the stat tracking in BAMT and I really don't want to have to roll my own Ubuntu iso.
568  Economy / Lending / Re: Looking for a Loan, + build my credibility on: April 19, 2012, 10:12:26 PM
Something I have found to establish confidence is to show that you're actually doing something productive with your loans. Loans to buy consumer goods to float you between paychecks aren't in the same caliber as loans to purchase mining equipment. Perhaps it'll help your case to mention your plans for the loan and provide some supporting information if this is a mining venture.

Beautiful! Ten bucks says this will be "successful", and he will start borrowing more and more until he defaults.

It's a shame that is the attitude within this sub-forum. Can't blame you guys though.
569  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Another POS 5970 off Ebay - alternatives to sending back? on: April 19, 2012, 05:12:46 AM
3.3v is the supply voltage and signaling voltage on the VRM controllers for these cards. Without 3.3v your VRM controller will not power on and switch the fets. Good luck running your GPUs then  Cheesy
570  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: mining with 6870 X2 on: April 19, 2012, 05:11:32 AM
Tried flashing the BIOS to set the memory to 500 MHz since I can't get Trixx or AfterBurner to drop the memory below 1000 MHz. That  didn't end well, Windows BSOD and Ubuntu refuses to display video. That being said I was able to drop the voltage with both AfterBurner and CGMiner. Dropping from 1.176 to 1.1v let the card mine at 950 MHz with no problems. Dropped the temps a bit and dropped power consumption at the wall by 40 watts(Corsair AX750 is feeding it). Going to flash back to the stock BIOS and worry about downclocking the ram later.

571  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: mining with 6870 X2 on: April 19, 2012, 03:19:22 AM
Just started playing with my 6870x2(one deal fell through). Right now at stock clocks(950 core, 1050 memory) the thing is blistering hot. GPU-Z is reporting some component around 95 Celsius, scary hot. At 100% fanspeed the cores are in the 70s with ambient temps around 20C. Going to run the card a bit and then work on dropping the memory clocks. Before I take power numbers I need to move it to a different rig.. it is sitting in my desktop with a high strung 2600K and 16GB of ram  Roll Eyes Just thought I'd update.

Can anyone report how hot (as reported by cgminer) their Rev3 units run? Curious to see how they compare to the Rev2 units.

About 63 to 64 degrees C. But that's in a 90+ degrees Fahrenheit room, i.e. my $215 p.M. mining office.
In fact, the [Nvidia] graphics card of the Toshiba laptop that runs CGMINER and the ZTEX miner seems to be on the fritz due to the heat and I just ordered a 17" HP laptop as a replacement - it's on sale for $699 today.
How the heck do you live in there without getting heatstroke? Huh

I don't "live" there - that's an office I rent (utilities included) in an office building for $215, and when I work there for more than 20 minutes, I take off my shirt and work in my undershirt, like a redneck.  Grin
I had an office even before I started mining, and got into Bitcoin mining less than a year ago as an afterthought, as a way for the office to pay its own rent.

Does that make sense, so far?

But now I've been infected by the Bitcoin fever and am trying to get a cash flow in the low-to-mid 4 figures going, with a Largecoin miner on order, a mini-rig box on order and 12 Singles on order, 4 of which have been delivered so far.
Utilities included, eh?  Hmmmm....  I might have to search for something similar in my area!

Be careful though. Sometimes, if the landlord traces it back to you, they might have the right to terminate your lease with very little warning.

Wasn't there a post going around of a college kid who suffered brain damage due to all his mining GPUs in his cramped dorm room? Be careful, you should probably just send all those GPUs to me.
575  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Why all the interest in 5830s recently? on: April 18, 2012, 11:22:27 PM
My Sapphire 5830s are some of the coolest and most reliable GPUs in my farm. I have 10 of them running on a pair of 890FX-GD70s and those two rigs have run for about a month now without any intervention necessary. Not the best for MH/w but if I could bulk buy another 10 I'd happily do so.
576  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Anyone have a 5970 with one REALLY hot VRM phase? on: April 18, 2012, 11:15:05 PM
Try and sell it on eBay as a gaming card Roll Eyes

On another note : this kind of abuse is why I stay away from used GPUs.

I'm not going to add to that issue on eBay. It won't even play TF2 though as the VRM phase overheats at the loading screen.

I imagine there are a number of us sitting by waiting to see the number of shares to be released. This is a great opportunity for those of us that don't have BS&T accounts.
578  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Anyone have a 5970 with one REALLY hot VRM phase? on: April 18, 2012, 02:59:10 PM
This happens when the VRM has -no- contact with whatever is meant to cool it. I know this because I had the same thing too when my 5870 fan died and tried a heatsink/fan without VRM cooling, was impossible to put any load at any decent frequency without frying it instantly, could only run really low frequency at like 100c.

Double check that ALL your VRMS have cooling. Get thermal pads if you have to.

Contact isn't the issue. I've mounted a few too many 5970 HSF to screw it up three times in a row. Each time the pads had imprints from the VRM ICs also. I wish it was a contact issue.
579  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Anyone have a 5970 with one REALLY hot VRM phase? on: April 18, 2012, 04:20:03 AM
Has anyone had a 5970 where one of the vddc phases for a core hits thermal shutdown at less than stock clocks? I'm talking, one phase at 115-120C and all the other phases on the card in the 50s. I remounted the stock HSF twice with new pads each time and I then mounted one of my spare EK waterblocks to the card.

Bottom GPU-Z, VDDC #2 is sitting at 72 Celsius with the core clocked down to 300MHz @ 0.95v just to keep it cool. At 375MHz and 0.95v it hovers around 95 Celsius. This card is at the end of a 6 card serially linked GPU waterblock chain so the incoming water is a bit warm at ~33-34C but compare the top GPU-Z. All my other 5970s look like that, cores in the 40s, VRMs in the low to mid 50s depending on where in the waterloop it sits.

The previous owner sent me a screenshot of the card running 800MHz on the core with an uptime of around 20 days right before he shipped this and another card to me. I trust that the owner didn't do a bait and switch. Just curious if anyone has seen this and if it is a sign that the phase is about to pop or if they've recovered it with something like a bake in the oven.
580  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5 pci-e mobo rig / 5870 mining on: April 17, 2012, 10:58:34 PM
Depending on your electricity costs undervolting the cards might generate higher profits even tho you generate less MH/s, especially if you are going to AC cool them Oo? Also 5x 5870s undervolted to 0,95V can be run from a single 750 PSU without any problems so would save on your initial costs as well. Overcklocking hasn't really been a good option since back of the 10$/btc days unless you got cheap/free electricity.

I would use 1x flexible PCI-e extension cables in all slots and you might have to short the A1-B17 pins in some of the slots if they don't detect that cards.

Any idea of how cheap the electricity needs to be in order for overclocking to be efficient? To rephrase the question: how many kWh does mining one bitcoin take on average and at what $/kWh cost does the electricity fees need to be in order to make that worthwhile (using 1 BTC = $5)?

Also, is having PCI-E extenders in all the slots for GPU cooling reasons or does it actually make things run smoother?

Cooling reasons. On my 890FX-GD70s I run 2 cards on the board and 3 cards on risers. That way all the cards are spaced out nicely.
