121  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] Monero Community FAQ on: December 28, 2014, 12:19:40 PM
Q: How to use a remote node?
A: if you don't have the 6-8 Gb of RAM presently needed to comfortably use your computer whilst synchronising the blockchain with bitmonerod, you can use a remote node, like hegemoon's node. This means you don't have to run bitmonerod anymore (this does negatively affect decentralisation, but not much)
For Linux:
Code:
./simplewallet --wallet-file=wallet.bin --daemon-host 88.151.101.22 --daemon-port 5012
Change wallet.bin accordingly. The code above assumes your working directory (use pwd or ls to check) is the one where both your wallet and your simplewallet binary are located.
The daemon host and port are hegemoon's, but you can use another one.

Tip1
You can install then use rlwrap to cycle through commands on the Linux version (no need for this in the Windows version)
Code:
sudo apt-get rlwrap
Code:
rlwrap ./simplewallet --wallet-file=wallet.bin --daemon-host 88.151.101.22 --daemon-port 5012

Tip2
To be sure to always be on the right directory for launching simplewallet, just add a command to go to the right directory
Code:
cd /bitmonero/build/release/bin/ && ./simplewallet --wallet-file=wallet.bin --daemon-host 88.151.101.22 --daemon-port 5012

Tip3
You can combine both:
Code:
cd /bitmonero/build/release/bin/ && rlwrap ./simplewallet --wallet-file=wallet.bin --daemon-host 88.151.101.22 --daemon-port 5012

Im the admin of this server, so its better right now to use the fqdn name : xmr1.coolmining.club, instead of the IP 88.151.101.22 as far as i can switch ip if server has problem Smiley

and also
Code:
./simplewallet --daemon-address xmr1.coolmining.club:5012 --wallet-file ./test1.bin
as shorter command line argument Smiley

Please, be aware that using a remote daemon compromises your privacy, as it leaks your transactions data. Someone in the middle sniffing your connection would be able to take a look at it, as well as the people operating the remote daemon. So basically you are trusting the person running the daemon and that no one is snooping your connection .

Quoting smooth from https://forum.monero.cc/4/academic-and-technical/10/remote-monero-deamon :

I think it is possible to mostly fix this model of light wallet by connecting to two nodes getting mixins from both. Then randomly choose have the mixins from each. Neither will be able to tell which is your coin source.

Snooping of transactions doesn't really matter -- they are public anyway --although snooping of the mixins could matter, and snooping of your IP could matter. Both issue can be largely fixed (granted not NSA-proof) by connecting to the nodes over Tor. A simple proxy setup should work.

Even over Tor, wouldn't it leak destination addresses and transactions amounts?

EDIT: Oh, OK, if the node is running as an .onion service then the channel would be secure, but would the node be able to get addresses and amounts?

No, the node sees the same transaction everyone else sees (e.g. by looking on chainexplorer.com, or the blockchain itself). That by itself doesn't include anything particularly useful (and can't).

With Tor the node could not correlate this with an IP address, which would be the only extra information it has if the mixins are blinded using multiple nodes as I described. The nodes would have to collude to identify the real source of the transaction.

Im the operator of public open node on which jwinterm based the wallet.

Also known as HegemoOn on irc.

For the moment there is only one instance running publicly, but if the wallet is widely adopted, i must run a reliable multiple instances service.

For the moment also, this service is sponsored only by my own pocket, and cost me more than what my pool generate.

So basically, new feature, better security, and more reliability is also an economical problem.
There is a donation button in this wallet, i really encourage peoples to use it, jwinterm and I need it to improve the code, and the service.

Note also that i don't trust TOR, as far as it is backed by US agency Smiley

SSD installed.

Just under 30 seconds to write the blockchain to disk.
It was just under 45 seconds on the same machine with a HDD.

And even faster if you have ramfs !
124  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha release of (Windows) unofficial lightweight GUI wrapper for simplewallet on: December 14, 2014, 04:49:06 PM
I'd like to announce the first alpha release of my unofficial lightweight GUI simplewallet wrapper, lightWallet. Using this program, you don't need to run the bitmonerod daemon on your own computer or do anything on the command line. By default it uses hegemoOn's (a long time Monero supporter) open node, although you can change it to use a different node (Atrides recently announced another one, for instance), or you can set it up to use a local daemon.

The release binary ( https://github.com/jwinterm/lightWallet/releases/download/v0.0.1-alpha/lightWallet.exe ) is a single file that has simplewallet.exe wrapped up inside of it, so you do still still need a 64 bit machine. Please check out the README.md file here as well:
https://github.com/jwinterm/lightWallet

I'm still working on the tx history part, and I'd like to add an address book, but since simplewallet itself doesn't really have either one of these features, I figured I'd go ahead and release it, since we have (at least) two open nodes to choose from now Smiley

The program should work to create new wallets or import non-deprecated wallets from their keys file (wallets with an electrum seed). There is an issue with simplewallet itself that prevents importing deprecated wallets at the moment, but this should be fixed in the next simplewallet release. The created/imported wallets will be stored in your My Documents folder in the lightWallet folder.

Here are a couple screenshots of the first two tabs:

Let me know what you think. I hope some people find it useful.

Superb Jwinterm and peoples don't forget the donate button for jwinterm and hegemoOn Smiley
