1  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Migrating Ledger Live to new laptop on: March 29, 2023, 12:59:49 PM
I have Ledger Live (Nano X) installed on my old laptop. Yesterday I received a new laptop and installed Live on that laptop. When I connected Nano X to the new laptop, after some configuration all my accounts came to the new laptop. I can see all my accounts and balances there. I even withdraw some funds from CEX to the new Live app on the new laptop. Is it safe to delete Live app from the old laptop now? Or how to make sure that I am safe and can get rid of the old laptop?

Please take an hour of your time and learn the basic mechanics of how seeds, private and public keys work on a blockchain especially in relation to Software interfaces like Ledger Live.
This lack of knowledge might make you lose your coins later down the road.

Quick digest:

You have a 12 or 24 word seed. This seed generates public and private keys.
Your ledger device connects to your PC and to your Ledger Live software.
Your ledger device provides public key upon request by Ledger Live software.
Your Ledger Live software checks the blockchain data against your public key and loads that data from the blockchain to populate your account history.

Your wallet data & history on your PC / Ledger live is only a copy from the blockchain. You can delete it at any time it doesn't have any impact on the data stored in the actual Blockchain.

Ledger Live is asking for transactions to be signed. Your Ledger device signs transactions (it never gives out your seed, it never gives out your private key).

Any time you want to restore Ledger Live on any PC/Laptop (even if for example your Laptop breaks), you can simply connect your Ledger device and it will repopulate the data from the blockchain.

Ultimately the most important part is to have your SEED WORDS SECURED.
As long as you have your 12 or 24 Seed words, your devices (Ledger, PC, Laptop) can be stolen, broken, destroyed, bricked, deleted, whatever and you will always be able to restore your access just from your seed words.

I suggest to watch the first 5 videos on that playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqyc7vcDEEqgQuKeN4F1j3thUckevmg8d
They cover the basics of how seeds words and keys work in greater detail.

On a side note. If you have only your Hardware Wallet Ledger device, without proper backups. All your coins will be lost if the Ledger device itself ever breaks or if you lose that flimsy paper that comes with it to write down your seed words.

Make 3 seed backups in steel washers (or titanium). And ideally encrypt them with a simple cipher (easiest and fastest youtube link with timestamp here
) or use a passphrase and store that separately.

Earthquake proof, Low cost, affordable, easily scalable, indestructible, fireproof 1400°C (a house fire is around 1100°C), waterproof, corrosion proof, shock proof, offline cold wallet, seed or passphrase backup.

2  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Metal Seed Storage Safe in an Earthquake? on: March 29, 2023, 12:32:00 PM
What happened in Turkey made me think carefully about how to keep my cold storage wallet seeds.

I keep them in a waterproof and fireproof notebook, but is there any proof of the efficiency of this Metal Seeds and/or notebooks with earthquakes? Does it bear the violent shocks?
What are the solutions, in your opinion, if an earthquake occurs? Or in other words, the best solution if you are in an area active in earthquakes and tsunamis.

Yes, Metal can survive a house toppling down (see stresstest links below), but you shouldn't rely on it. You should have redundancy backups.

Make 3 seed backups in steel washers (or titanium). And ideally encrypt them with a simple cipher (easiest and fastest) or use a passphrase and store that separately.

Earthquake proof, Low cost, affordable, easily scalable, indestructible, fireproof 1400°C (a house fire is around 1100°C), waterproof, corrosion proof, shock proof, offline cold wallet, seed or passphrase backup.

like a natural disaster.
The problem of creating more than one wallet seed with earthquakes is in distributing them, you will be forced to keep one of them away from you or your home and perhaps your geographical area, which increases the risk that someone else will be able to know it.

There are multiple ways to encrypt/secure your seed backups so they are not readable even if someone finds them in the open at a different location from yours.
There are ways to encrypt a seed in a way that you could show it to people, they would think it's a real seed, but they wouldn't be able to get to your coins.
There are also ways to encrypt a seed in a way that you could show it to people and they wouldn't even recognise it as a seed, so they wouldn't be able to get to your coins.

For example: Simple cipher (Youtube link with timestamp), Passphrase, XOR, Shamir secret sharing, Multisig, and more.

4  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers on: March 28, 2023, 11:06:29 PM
I do not own a 3d printer can I buy your jig from any where or will I have to buy the cryptocloak jig? I want to use bigger washers and not 25mm which are the only one that cryptocloak support. Only $10 for the jig is a good price and I do not think I can make one cheaper then that because I would need to use a company to print the jig.

I can make you a Seed Backup Jig in any size. Visit my shop here and message me your exact specifications that you want:

Not your key not your coins.

Get all coins off exchange. Take self custody.

Get a Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet (This way you can access them anytime). There are a bunch of youtube videos on how they work.

Then make 3 seed backups in steel washers (or titanium). And ideally encrypt them with a simple cipher (or use a passphrase and store that separately)

Low cost, affordable, easily scalable, indestructible, fireproof 1400°C (a house fire is around 1100°C), waterproof, corrosion proof, shock proof, earthquake proof, offline cold wallet, seed or passphrase backup.

6  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Thinking of separating my holdings into two physical locations. on: March 28, 2023, 10:45:57 PM
I wasn't quite sure how to summarize it in the title just as I'm not quite sure if this is the exact place where the thread should go. Let me explain and you tell me.

So far I have been managing my Bitcoin holdings using a HW in a location and in the same location I have had the seeds well hidden and written down on a piece of paper.

As I accumulate, I have been thinking of buying another HW and storing it in a vacation home, just like the seeds, in the same way, written down and hidden. It would be about handling half of my holdings at each site.

What do you think? I don't think it would make sense, for example to have copies of the seeds of both HW's at both sites because in a $5 wrench attack I could lose everything.

One drawback I see is that if the house burns down I would lose everything I manage with one HW, but well, that risk I also had now, having 100% of the management of my holdings in one site.

Paper storage is horrible. And you should have at least 3 backups.

Let me introduce you to our lord and savior: Crypto Seed backup in steel washers.

Low cost, affordable, easily scalable, indestructible, fireproof 1400°C (a house fire is around 1100°C), waterproof, corrosion proof, shock proof, earthquake proof, offline cold wallet, seed or passphrase backup.

7  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: March 28, 2023, 10:39:00 PM
Phones are a really bad choice for cold storage.

They are always connected to cell network/tower and internet. Ever noticed how you can do an emergency call without a sim card? That connection potentially works backwards via backdoors as well.
Police can access your phone and listen in without you knowing. If they can, so can potentially other unwanted parties. Doing anything crypto related on your phone open you up for attack.

There is also risk of chip/battery failure. Even USB devices need to be reactivated every 1-2 years, otherwise they won't hold enough charge to keep the memory alive, which leads to data loss.
You mentioned cold storage, i assume that will be long term, so anything electrial is a no.

For cold storage you want to store your seed words (ideally encrypted) in something

- indestructible
- fireproof 1400°C (a house fire is around 1100°C)
- waterproof
- corrosion proof
- shock proof
- earthquake proof

Basically you want this:
