1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks are fundamentally unnecessary and actually dangerous for bitcoin on: August 02, 2011, 03:18:03 AM

To store money in someone elses wallet if you did not need those services is/was a mistake.

Agreed, 110%. I'm still a "noob" in the BTC world, but the idea of handing over my meager wallet to a 3rd party immediately seemed stupid to me. It's a shame the wiki and some respectable people in the community recommended such a service. I would feel horrible....

I'm not sure what all the services were that mybitcoin offered, but they definitely can't change the fundamental characteristics of bitcoin. There is no way they can guarantee instant transfers from external accounts without simultaneously losing the guarantee that your funds are actually 100% available at any moment. They can "guarantee" instant transfers internally from mybitcoin->mybitcoin, but these transactions are reversible, unlike real bitcoin transactions.

I totally agree with your OP. I was just pointing out the potential benefits of a REPUTABLE bitcoin banking service.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks are fundamentally unnecessary and actually dangerous for bitcoin on: August 02, 2011, 02:50:00 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some bank services, like the infamous mybitcoin.com, offer an instant payment service for it's members? This actually increases the oppurtunity value of your BTC since there's no need to wait for block confirmations.

Having said that, I think what Joel was trying to say (despite the strange wording of the last sentence), is that if a bank gives no benefits (ie. interest, instant transfers/payments to other bank members, etc.), there is no reason to use the service.
3  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [~2400 GH/sec] BTC Guild - 0% Fees, LP, SSL, API, 8 Decimal Payouts and more! on: August 02, 2011, 02:35:27 AM
I am glad that some people see their income has gone up (previous post a while ago on this page)...but in my case,
while my speeds are pretty consistent on two of my miners at 385 Mh/s and 285 Mh/s, respectively, btcguild often records them much much lower...my income has actually gone DOWN today...from average 0.0214 for 1.183 Gh/s (both 96 hr averages) to 0.0173 for 1.183 Gh/s today.

Why?

Difficulty increased today, maybe that's why?

4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: GnuPG versus TrueCrypt on: August 01, 2011, 04:05:29 PM
Hi,
I found this discussion very interesting as I asked the question myself.
Maybe anyone has already mentioned it, but how do you protect /tmp files or what so ever?

You need to decrypt your wallet to the .bitcoin directory, or any other place where the blockchain is.
After that you encrypt your wallet again and delete the unencrypted wallet.

Do you use an eraser tool for that? Otherwise it would not be safe enough for me;)

For me I figured out to use a truecrypt container holding my .bitcoin directory.
To backup the wallet only I use pgp and ssh (rsnapshot) to put it on a remote computer.

On linux use the shred command and then delete it:

Code:
shred wallet.dat
rm wallet.dat

EDIT: According to this thread, shred may not do it's job properly...
5  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT - Easy persistent USB key based linux for dedicated miners/mining farms on: August 01, 2011, 01:59:34 AM
My hats off to you lodcrappo!

Very easy install and configuration. On the first boot I edited the config and pools, then rebooted to test persistence. The wife distracted me for a bit and when I came back my miners were already working at BTCGuild!

I like it, much better than the current logo!
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing BidBitcoins.com. NEW Auction Site like E-Bay - All Sales in Bitcoins on: August 01, 2011, 01:42:28 AM

Hi jayfitt,
I am working on getting the https in place at this time.
Trufina is not one of those "credit check" type websites. I don't think you have to pay for anything additionally. It's up to them to confirm you. I'm pretty sure of this. Their process is not too difficult to get through. They use your credit card data to first confirm you, initially, then they ask you a series of questions that, based on their web search using their customized algorithm, they grab your data, and if you don't match the questions right, you get a new set of questions. Im pretty sure they have some database access, but the companies that have real good database access charge the host site a large fee to verify customers. Trufina also uses Phone confirmation
The point is not for me to scrutinize everyone and make sure you have an A+ credit rating, it's to make sure that people do not sign up for the site, create some positive feedback, then scam people for something relatively expensive, only to sign up again and do the same thing. That's the main reason for this, is fraud prevention for the buyers. It does not have to be too complicated. Feedback is the first step, then ID verification comes in right behind it. If anyone has any better solutions that are less expensive and less intrusive, by all means, please share them, and i'll consider it. So far, Trufina seems workable.
If you sign up, and cannot get verified for some reason, then I will make allowances, but you'll have to send scans of personal info like credit card and drivers license and a current bill that matches the address on both.
I figured people would appreciate good security without too much infringement, so I opted for Trufina instead of this method, but either one can solve the problem. This way I can avoid holding everyone's personal info until or unless I become a full fledged registered business.

Hope that helps.

I agree with you, security and accountability are important. I appreciate (and I'm sure the community does too) that you want to create a safe environment for us to buy and sell. My only concern was giving access to my personal/financial information to another 3rd party that I can't find much info about.

8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing BidBitcoins.com. NEW Auction Site like E-Bay - All Sales in Bitcoins on: August 01, 2011, 12:55:31 AM
From what I've seen, the site looks good (my account isn't verified, can't login). My two concerns are https (already mentioned) and according to the privacy policy at trufina.com I may have to provide "other financial" information since I've changed addresses in the last year. Do you get a report from them and then activate accts?
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin.com - hosting provider: leaseweb.com on: August 01, 2011, 12:34:13 AM

2) Businesses need to provide faxed copies of their operating licenses/business certificates. If they are not a registered business but a home-business, they need to provide multiple proofs of identity including a physical address for product return claims to be associated with, and a phone number to be connected with technical support.

In the spirit of trust and transparency, it would benefit the community if we had some of this information from you as well.

The domain names uabb.org and uabci.org have been registered anonymously. And the email m_wright@hanmail.com, which is associated with baok.or.kr, has bounced back as undeliverable.

I love this idea and it could really benefit the community, but with everything that's been happening lately we need more. Are we supposed to trust one anonymous person on the internet because another anonymous person says they are legit?

For trust, we need total transparency in the organization that is handing out these accredations.

EDIT: don't take this post the wrong way. It's not meant to be accusatory. These are valid concerns!

Have you OC'd at all?

I just setup a 5830 and got about 280MH at first. I'm averaging 302MH now after a slight OC and underclocking memory. I'm using atitweak

Congrats!

Got my first BTC yesterday also!
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it worth it? on: July 31, 2011, 01:21:28 AM
IMHO, it's not worth it.

You need to include the difficulty increases in your calculations. Your 8 months could easily stretch into 20 with the current rate of difficulty increases. Most people are making the assumption that BTC will increase in price with difficulty, but so far the price has remained the same.

The only way I see mining being profitable in the long run is having low/no electricity costs and/or BTC value to increase. alot.
