1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What about a Bitcoin only "EBAY" ? on: September 07, 2011, 06:37:06 AM

Thanks for the reply, not much there yet, bidbitcoins looks promising. Bitcoin supporters should be actively using and/or developing [a massive] auction site, I know I'm going to start buying things with bitcoins to do my part.

The downside might be we will lose the "anonymous" aspect if we start shipping things to one another, but with general goods (typical ebay stuff) shouldn't be a big issue.

I have not been promoting it very much, because I don't want to troll about, but I will re-post here what I posted in my original thread.

*No Chargebacks unless agreed to by both parties.
*Anonymity from banks in all transactions.
*No banking fees for money transfers to sellers from buyers.
*Every auction or item placed for sale and sold through Bid Bitcoins supports the whole bitcoin community and helps further bitcoins acceptance into the marketplace.
*Much less fraud potential for both parties. Credit cards lend themselves to fraud by their very nature, as card numbers can easily be stolen and used to make purchases, than mailed to themselves at unwitting victims addresses.
*Users/Members accounts with money cannot be frozen due to “suspected” fraud.
*No user credit card data is stored onsite. Anyone who hacks the site will not have  access to accounts of any kind and therefore cannot cause financial damage directly to any user by theft.

What kind of features does Bid Bitcoins have?  Here is the full list:
* Currency of all goods and services denominated in Bitcoin
* All Merchants will be required to accept Bitcoin, although other arrangements can be made offsite.
* All forms of auction including Dutch Buy it Outright, Reserve Price, Reverse Auctions, Wanted Ads.
* 1 Day, 3 Days, 7 Day Days, 14 Days, and 30 Day auction choices.
* Make  Offer  Options.
* First Bidder Auctions
* Select Starting Price
*  Define Offer Acceptance range
* Swap Offers Option
* Upload up to 3 Free images and 6 images total.
* Auto Relist
* Batch Uploads
* Personal Store Options. Basic Store 100% Free
* Block Users
* Postage Calculation Setup
* Reputation / Comments / Feedback
* Preferred Seller Features
* User Enabled Skin Changes
* Combined Purchase Invoices
* Ask Seller a Question / Member Messaging

He lost 10,000 BTC in the MyBitcoin scandal. From now on he's going to use the standard client, and encrypt the wallet.dat with truecrypt, and back it up on Dropbox. And he's looking into deterministic private keys. That might be the safest way to save his horde.

It would be great to see the Onion do this one

If you signed up and had problems starting an auction, the bug is fixed now.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I think people should write Bruce encouraging letters. Send him good vibes, some love and maybe a few bitcoins. Tell him how much he has done for the community and how we all appreciate him. What else can we do?
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [UABCI] September 27, 2011 U.S.Department of the Treasury might regulate BitCoin on: August 04, 2011, 02:27:31 AM
I understood the main reason for this legislation was to close the anonymous pre-paid phone accounts... that is they are not happy that you can use a phone without it being tied to your name/address. The whole thing is silly, however, as those with criminal intent will just use others credentials to purchase.

I don't think that's what it is. Anyone can get a Metro PCS phone without ID. I think it's the fact that stored value cards are used to launder drug money. The Treasury issued a Memorandum about this a few years back. They claimed it was the number one way people were avoiding taxes and laundering drug money.

OMG, Bruce, i'm so sorry for you. That's so messed up. I extend my condolences.  Cry

Hey Gilgamesh, I removed the Trufina verification. You can set up shop on the site if you like.

I just wanted to add to this thread the fact that I have decided to stop the Trufina Verification process for users who sign up. Several people have mentioned they felt is was too much to deal with and they did not want to use it. We can try it out, and see if it works without it. Hopefully, feedback will be enough to help people stay safe.  Smiley
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / BidBitcoins.com is dropping the Trufina Verification on: August 02, 2011, 09:52:35 PM
I've decided to drop the Trufina Verification since people seem to think it's an impediment to signup.
I'm going to allow the site to be Wild Wild West and Buyer Beware I guess. Hopefully, people will not use it as a means to cheat others, and the feedback process will take care of the majority of concerns.

If you signed up, and have yet to be approved, i'll be approving accounts manually, this afternoon.

What do people think of this?
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing BidBitcoins.com. NEW Auction Site like E-Bay - All Sales in Bitcoins on: August 02, 2011, 06:50:17 PM
A suggestion for those who want to make a few extra bitcoins.

If people are inclined, and since fees are free for the first 3 months, for starting fees and closing fees, anyone who wants to make a few extra bucks can take items they know of locally, take pictures of them and list them on the site. If you know of some good products, just choose a value in bitcoins just slightly higher than the cost in dollars. That way you won't lose any money on the auctions. If the prices are started at your minimum, one never knows and you may make some sales.

For instance, if you have some cash lying around that you can cover, go ahead and list some software or product on the site. If it sells, you'll be paid in bitcoins first. Then you can just make the purchase for the person and send it to them, and pocket the difference. I might end up doing that myself to help get the ball rolling.

BTW, I have not gotten much response yet about the trufina signup process. 10 people have signed up so far, but none have gone through the process yet. Is this a problem for people? If so, what can I do to make it better?

Thanks everyone,
BidBitcoins Admin

SSL is now active. This should help secure things even more.

15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing bitgem.org, buy and speculate on precious stones (Pegged to BTC!) on: August 01, 2011, 11:56:03 PM
I have a rather large sapphire I was considering testing out for promotional purposes on your site, but I'm not willing to give up personal information so that's kind of a deal breaker for me. I was trying to find a good use for that thing in promotions though, so I'll need to come up with some new ideas.

Understood.

Best of luck in your venture.  Wink

17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing bitgem.org, buy and speculate on precious stones (Pegged to BTC!) on: August 01, 2011, 11:37:52 PM
Today I would like to unveil a new project which will be online one month from today. BitGem.org has been a while in the making, between finding and working with investors, purchasing inventory, and deciding how the company was going to be run. I am unveiling it now because the product has been received, and I will post pictures in a couple of days of our initial offerings.

What is BitGem?
BitGem is two things. The first is a storefront for anyone wishing to purchase precious stones using nothing but bitcoins. This storefront will differentiate itself from many other bitcoin stores by pegging our products to Bitcoins. The rate of currency to bitcoin might fluctuate rapidly, but once a stone has been listed it's price will not change no matter where the exchange markets are. I am willing to take a loss on this, but I believe personally that the biggest issue with Bitcoin today is that with very little exceptions everything is pegged to the dollar. I and my investors have faith in the Bitcoin market, and we'll see where that leads us.

The second feature of BitGem is as a speculative side. When you purchase a gem, you will have two choices, either I can ship it to you immediately, or you can pay a fee to have me re-list the gem as for sale at a price you define. This will combine with the fact that I won't list similar stones within a set period means that if you purchase a stone, I sell them all, and people still want them, then you will have the option to sell at a profit. Considering the rate of bitcoin to dollars could fluctuate, as could the cost of gemstones themselves, there is some interesting potential for profit here.

When you purchase a stone you will know exactly how many are remaining in my stock. At any point you may request the stone be sent out to you, and this will be done as soon as possible.

What kind of stock will BitGem have?
As it currently stands, we have a stock of Peridot, Garnets, and Sapphires available. There are talks right now of emeralds, but these haven't been purchased yet. Requests for future product absolutely will be taken into consideration, and we will expand as demand dictates.

What kind of prices are these going for?
Prices will be reasonable, with most semi-precious stones falling between 1-2 bitcoins. The price will obviously be effected by things like the kind of stone, the carat weight, desirability, etc. Obviously stones like the sapphires will be more.

What condition are these stones in?
All are in brand new condition and faceted. Should you choose to mount one of these stones, you would likely have no problems doing so.

What about business practices?
BitGem will work in two ways. The first is that we as a company will be completely above the table. Income will be reported to the proper authorities and taxed respectively. We will not suddenly vanish due to a failure to disclose.

Secondly, we care greatly about privacy. This includes both our own and yours. I understand there is recent mistrust recently due to some wallet stealing, and it is for this reason we will not be hosting anything more than a storefront online. Both for the sake of keeping track of an exchange, and as a precaution against having our data compromised, we have decided to take the unusual step of doing as much as possible in hardcopies.

One of the downsides to this obviously is that I will not have a real name or phone number listed for either myself or my investors. It is for this reason that we will start with the smaller inventory until trust is gained. We know you have no reason to trust us initially, so we would rather a good track record speak for itself. Considering a majority of this business would be small transactions, that should establish some level of security for buyers right there.

When will you open for business?
The site will go fully live very early in September. This allows us some time to work out any remaining logistics, secure some extra inventory, and --most importantly, hear feedback from the community.

As far as we know, this is the first time a commodity has been pegged to Bitcoins at a fixed exchange rate. We're incredibly excited to see this happening finally and as it stands there isn't much that can go wrong as long as the demand is there. I understand the only reputation I have at this point is from my posts on the forum, but I would ask that anyone interested please at least try our service when it goes online.

In the meantime, I would very much like to hear questions, comments and concerns you might have.

-Gilgamesh

Hey Gilgamesh, you're welcome to test things out on my new system at BidBitcoins and maybe even gain some good reputation in the meantime.

When AI is finally born, it'll only spend and accept bitcoins.

But on a serious note, the reason computers can never take over the world is because someone can always unplug them. Game over.

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing BidBitcoins.com. NEW Auction Site like E-Bay - All Sales in Bitcoins on: August 01, 2011, 06:49:46 PM
Now that's very nice. And nothing lifted. I like it a lot. Will probably go with this. Would love to hear what some others think about it, too. This is definitely #1 right now. Thanks!

Thanks,  if you choose it I'll send over the PSD file as well... Some type is rasterized, but it can be easily re-done to be fully type/path based (with the exception of the coin image which was taken from skull88 here on the forum: http://bitcointalk.org/?topic=687.0.)

In all fairness, if you select this image, I will split the proceeds with skull88.  His BTC address is in the quote below if you'd like to send his share directly to him.
You can use them freely for whatever you want, ofcourse if you use them or like them, a donation is always welcome (1MifMqtqqwMMAbb6zr8u6qEzWqq3CQeGUr)
I would double check with him via PM to ensure that wallet address wasn't with one of the recent casualties of greed though...

Thanks Intervex, i'm seriously considering it. It has everything i'm looking for and it looks very nice. I'll probably decide by the end of today. I need to get the site branded asap.

Is nice.. But I will accept half of whatever you were going to pay him! Grin

Hi TheBitMan,
   Let competition empower you to try harder not to sell yourself short.
Let's see some more! When the going get's tough, the tough step up!
It's not too late to bring it to the table.
Good luck!
