I think the PIC & Digital Pot are at the moment in place to allow a Factory adjustment to the Core Voltage to be made either to cope with batch variations in the BM1385 and / or to optimise each hash board for it's default frequency?

What does not quite make sense if this was the only objective is why they did not just use an EE as opposed to a RAM based Digital Pot and not bother with the PIC?

My best answer to this is that there is connection from the Controller to the PIC to allow at some future date a version of firmware to be released that allows setting of the Core voltage or even an automatic selection of core voltage with a frequency change?

When someone gets a chance tracing the connections to the PIC will reveal what is or could be possible?

I have traced what I can from the pictures and everything makes sense around the PIC & the Digital Pot as regards the PIC being factory programmed from the row of contacts on the board edge.

What would be worth investigating is where if anywhere the I2C data & Clock connections go to on the rest of the board,?

The red traces show the Data & Clock connections from the PIC to the Digital Pot, however there is also through R21 & R22 additional connections that connect to the inner layer on the PCB, or are these just termination resistors. Question is do they pick up the main I2C bus used by the LM75 Temperature IC or go to separate connections on the Controller connector?

Rich

these resistors as you shown are i2c standart 4.7k serial data-clock pullup resistors on 3.3 Vcc line.

Any chance the Batch8 is software controllable? digging around vi SSH (root/admin), found these references:
etc/config/cgminer.conf:    "bitmain-voltage" : "0706"
etc/cgminer.conf.factory:   "bitmain-voltage" : "0725"

seems strange that they are different, yet still necessary to reference. Anyone know what voltage the B8 actually runs at?

currenty playing with the values to see if they do something

It would be great if they do something.... but my gut feeling is that those numbers look very familiar from all sorts of conf files in other miners that do nothing?

They don't seem to do anything, but why put a digital pot adjustable over I2C with a PIC just to control it if you just set a fixed value?
Some people with better Antminer firmware knowledge may be able to unlock it if it's locked somehow.

First of all congratulations J4bberwock for the found that messy MCP4017T-503E and 12F1572.
i can explain that setup with simple way :
this specific pic has 10bit ADC and 5bit DAC. so, it reads a voltage and calculate a proper value of resistor then compare a setted one then send a Power good signal to Controller and also communicate with Digital pot for adjusting. if setted value can be handle with Dpot sobiet, if not pic immidiately handle the control for voltage raise/fall safety. Finally this is closed loop voltage controller circuit for safety not for adjusting. Wink

Now, you will ask that to me or yourself, why they make another closed loop cycle like that (1.lm27402 has that). i think when some bm1385 chips fall(O to X) then inner voltage will raise, also think opposite, if some chips are greedy they decrease a inner voltage. This point is says to us, bm1385 is not working stable with alone.

anyone need S7 hashboard connector pin info description, i can provide it.
also you can use hashboards only 4 data cable Smiley (tx-rx-3.3V-Gnd)

Interesting, please share the pin out. Are you sure that it's only 4 connections? If the same as an S5 I would have thought there would also be a Reset plus Data & Clock for the LM75A Temp Sensor?

Rich

if you use 3 boards with 1 controller i think 1 lm75 connection is fine.
i prefer to use center board lm75 i2c connections.
for others you can use only 4 cable.
but this is meanless if you use 3 board and 1 controller. this pin info for more than 6 hashboards like s5+, also for short wires.

Not sure why you are messing with the connectors? But I disagree, as far as I know the firmware looks at all 3 LM75 and takes the highest temperature to set the fan speed, so you are chancing that the centre board has the highest temperature, which it may have but why chance it?

Rich

Smiley i know Rich, i can share this for nothing. this is for only knowledge if you want Wink
i inspect that for misterious pins like command-reset-test pins.

Edited: Also i share Fan connector info and modify, and you can use any PWM controlled fan with that. but be patient please.

Bitmain has been down a long time. I hope the Chinese government hasn't shut them down. Anybody heard any news about why they're down?

Perhaps they are about to release S9 with the Full Custom 14nm 0.1J/GH BM1386 ASIC  Smiley ?

I believe I'm doing what you are doing to inspect the rigs from now on with future batches.  Especially, after reading the WARNING here in the photo you provided.

Thanks for sharing...

Interesting for sure.  I like that they gave customer permission to open it and check.   That is much better then the don't touch policy.

Maybe they are changing for the better on warranty... or maybe to many were falling off.  Makes me wonder on number for them to send that letter with it.

Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy dont touch to my ass  Grin  Grin  Grin

i removed cleaned polished inspected and resoldered...
Note: i am serious, dont try this @ home
also i am thinking what is 1385+BIN2 label on v2.0 boards.  Huh 1385Gh binary v2  Huh if chips have any eeprom we fucked up folks. this means hash count is true. if 1385 not hash number or freq, meaning bm1385, so why labeled 1385 ? all S7's have not bm1385 ??

could you please advise on how to safely remove all the heatsinks from antminer S7. Did you use heat gun?
What did you use to clean the chips?

first rule     : You cannot remove white alu heatsinks with black bonding adhesive from like B2 4,66th machine.
second rule : You cannot remove otherside of pcb brown chromium plated heatsinks, these are soldered.
(i replated these with Boron Nitride because they have different voltages and high conductive,
when white heatsinks dropped on these BOOOM SHORT CIRCUIT !)

third rule    : Do NOT USE BRUTE FORCE

now, 3 main rules for happy faces Smiley
-inspect pcb and be sure its a white glue between heatsink and chip
-set your "smd heat gun" (not heatgun) to 220 C
-cover thin flat watchmaker screw driver with kapton tape (for nice force)
-put screwdriver between heatsink and pcb and dont push
-put smdhg to top of the heatsink and wait 15sec.
-slowly push and check heatsink and make a little angle difference
finally some ones easyly drops...
-find a metal bath, fill with cellulosic thinner
-immerse pcb in it and use brush for remove white al2o3 particles
-you can use plastic thing to remove hardest epoxy on center of chip. (center is very hard to remove)
finally you can use F800 sandpaper for polish heatsinks
i said again, if you dont have electronic skills DONT DO THAT. because maybe you can broke chip solderings...

DEAR BITMAIN, I WANT TO ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION:
all these S7 chips are same (pure bm1385) or not (revised versions) ?

369  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Hacking KNC Neptune miners back to life. Why not? on: December 11, 2015, 12:34:22 AM
i repaired my knc neptune controller,
i bought full demaged 5cube and 1 controller
i repaired 3cube+controller. now it hash 2TH at 1200W
syptoms:
all boards not hashing
nothing shown on lcd

solution:
buy a new FPGA from digikey (75$)
and remove-replace a new one with bga station.

i try to repair 2 cubes but i cant because 1.2V feed line connected to big KNC asic. this line is shortcircuit.
i decided to not fight because i cant waste my time.

Did you have to open it to see that? I can't really see it just by looking inside

Cheesy i removed all of them. close device and use flashlight if you cant see.

So, for the people less "in", are you saying black is bad, so don't touch Batch 2? This could be why some people report heatsink falling off and the unit burning down?

yes indeed, black is strong glue then white but this has really bad thermal conductivity.
white is 1,2 w/mK
black is 0,4 w/mK

Yeah, very weird. I wonder what Bitmain has to say about that.

I'm sure because although I received both miners at the same time, I had only the left one turned on until I get my 2nd PSU for the right one, and it has been always running with these RPM.

this is bonding glue problem. look at large alu heatsink between chips, you will see one miner has black glue others is white,
white ones epoxy + al2o3 adhesive, this is thermal glue.
black ones standard chip bonding glue(cyanoacylilat), this is not thermal glue. this ones comes with B2 4.66Th
regards.

if voltage controller be in new boards. i think we can not control them Smiley because pic12f1822 job is simple; adjust voltage at boot and set working voltage to buck controller ic. this is chip protection for them.

If there is voltage control.... a way will be found to adjust it.  Smiley

Rich

There's a voltage listing in /config/cgminer.conf on S7's. As someone mentioned earlier, the "factory defaults" are not the ones all miners come with though. Factory listing with 700 mhz is 0725, the one in some config files you'll see at receipt is 0706.

It looks like this:

"bitmain-voltage" : "0725"

thats very good. we know its adjustable now. thanx

if you have any falled or bumped heatsink you can use this

i think you are right , new boards with coils have a buck converter, because i seen ICSP like 6 pin socket on bitmains picture. this means have a microchip pic for voltage controller like s4. another side of pcb must to have 2 or 4 big mosfet + buck controller ic + microchip pic.

Yes could be ICSP connections, did not realise the S4 used a Pic to control the voltage, assumed it had a programmable VRM?

On the 1385+BIN2 that could imply that they are speed / voltage selecting the BM1385 chips and these were from Bin 2?

Final observation  Smiley from a much better picture of the chip side of the board is that they have fitted an oscillator to every node on the Board. The S5 originally had a single oscillator, then on the V1.91 they fitted an oscillator for every 4 Nodes on the board (I still suspect this is one of the changes that enabled the S5 to be successfully undervolted), however the board layout actually had provision for an oscillator on every node.

It would be great if the 135 chip boards turn out to have a programmable voltage Buck Controller...

Rich

i seen bin2 from this picture :
https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FkrFSsnV.jpg&t=559&c=Dovh_zqjP3lwJw

bm1384 chips voltages at own corners, bm1385 feeding left and right, my picture is 4.86 S7 (i dont know which batch is probably B3) but boards version is 1.8 pcb version is 1.6

after a hour of looking  at what could be wrong I may have found the problem.  may be my error.

my psu's volts dropped from 12.01 to 11.80   and I know that is an issue.  Iplayed with psu and it is now doing 12.01 volts.

I think the psu did not get enough space for cooling off and dropped it volts a bit.  I will need to keep a closer eye on it for a day or two.

so my good one does 4890gh with .0001 errors

and this troubled one  is now back to 4730 at freq 581  with 0.0111 errors

they owe me on time with the good one as it was a few days late.  but it runs so well I am more forgiving.

Happy to hear that.  It sounded rather unusual
